Ron Weasley and Luna Lovegood:
Unstoppable Snack Ship
Ron Weasley and Luna Lovegood are two very different people. Both can see the differences in the other, but can they see the intense similarities? Compatibility, even? Because they are compatible, and it's beginning to show...
Ron is a very unique person. His red Weasley hair is the physical indication of that. He's quick to anger, incredibly loyal and nervous about what other people think of him. He tries really hard, and he's a great guy, but he has his problems.
Luna Lovegood is one of the oddest people Ron's ever met. Her long, wavy blonde hair physically shows her differences from everyone's favorite sidekick, but it goes way beyond that. Luna wears a necklace made of butterbeer corks, she believes in things that can't be seen and she is more secure with herself than anyone else in any of the books.
On the surface, these two seem like they shouldn't even interact, that they have little in common, but that is not true at all.
In a girl, Ron needs someone who won't freak out every time he does, because he tends to do that often, for no apparent (or good) reason. This is one reason Hermione probably isn't the best choice for Ron. However, Luna has a certain air of unalterable calm about her. There's almost nothing that could rile her up, make her angry enough to say anything she doesn't mean.
When Ron gets angry, he has a tendency to yell and rage about something that isn't actually the cause of his anger. In Goblet of Fire, Ron and Hermione argue about Hermione going with Krum after the Yule Ball. Ron accuses her of 'fraternizing with the enemy', and Hermione tells him shortly that he should've asked her first. This is the only time in the series when Hermione calls Ron on something in that manner, and the next day, everything's almost back to normal. When Ron and Hermione fight, they usually end up not speaking for days, sometimes even months, but this argument didn't last overnight. Now, if someone who often spoke such uncomfortable truths were to be with Ron, he would have to learn to face his anger and his problems head-on - Luna would never let him be angry for the wrong reason. She has a knack for knowing what's really going on, seeing what other people don't, and letting Ron know what she thinks in those situations, she can help him to better understand himself.
Another thing is that Luna is a bit...well, for lack of a better word, odd. At the beginning of Order of the Phoenix, Harry didn't want to sit in her compartment because she's odd, and Harry wished he weren't in that compartment when Cho Chang sees him, because he wants to come off cool. Luna wears radish earrings and butterbeer cork necklaces. She wears a lion head hat to Gryffindor matches we've seen, and when she announced she talked about Loser's Lurgy and the clouds instead of the score of the game.
You know all that. Now, anyone who would be coupled up with her when she's doing these absurdly odd things, reading the Quibbler, talking about Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and such, would blush and probably sink into their seats to make it look like they weren't with her, like Harry wanted to in that first encounter with her. OR they would do like Hermione and try to convince Luna she's wrong about her beliefs.
Ron, however, has been learning throughout the books that what other people think of you is much less important than what you know about yourself. Ron made the Gryffindor Quidditch team in his fifth year (Order of the Phoenix), but had an awful time playing whenever his nerves got the best of him, which happened a lot. Malfoy's version of "Weasley is Our King" didn't help that. However, Ron (especially after the Felix Felicis incident) has begun to realize that it doesn't matter what other people think of you, and once he gets into that attitude, he always plays exceedingly well.
SO, through Quidditch Ron is slowly (but surely) learning that, yes, he can do it, and no, it doesn't matter what stupid song the Slytherins are singing about how much he sucks, because he doesn't.
And if he can get over 'Weasley is Our King' ringing throughout the Quidditch Stadium, I think he can get over the Luna wearing a butterbeer cork necklace and believing in Crumple-Horned Snorkacks.
Once he gets over the initial shock of her quirks and personality, he'll be able to sit back and appreciate her genuine authenticity, her stunning individuality, and her incredible security, and it will help him become more secure with himself.
However, the benefits of this ship are not completely in Ron's favor.
Luna has never had many friends, she's never been popular by any standards, and she's got the not-so-affectionate nickname 'Loony Lovegood' from her classmates, who periodically steal her things, just for the heck of it.
If she were to really befriend Ron, even date him, he would be able to protect her from this sort of mockery and ridicule, even if (though) it doesn't bother her. It should - it's mean, cruel and completely unnecessary. Ginny's already begun correcting people shortly whenever they call Luna "Loony", and I'm sure that, as a tall, lanky, Quidditch playing older guy, Ron could really help her get the point across that Luna isn't that bad, and there is no reason under the sun to be mean to her.
With Ron she would find acceptance, friends, and protection from everything external. She may be secure and happy with herself and her beliefs, but that doesn't mean she doesn't need friends. That girl is as sweet as they come and deserves so much more than what she's been given.
One of Luna's best traits is her undyingly loyal nature. To her family, her friends, her beliefs, and above all herself. Nothing in the whole world could sway her otherwise. Nothing.
Ron's undyingly loyal, too, but he has a harder time at it. He gets angry, he gets worried, he gets insecure. That's the uncanny part about Luna - it isn't her oddities, her quirks or her beliefs, really, it's her stability and security in them and herself. Ron could use a good dose of that. It would make him one of the strongest pillars in his life, and to be your own pillar is a real achievement, something to strive for. With Luna by his side, Ron could learn to be just as secure in himself as she is in herself, just as apathetic about what other people think as she is.
Security's a funny thing. A crazy thing. One that very few people ever really have alone. Luna's got it, and Ron needs a dose of it. Especially with all the trials coming up ahead.
And, of course, there's the canonical evidence of him being incapacitated and listening to (and loving) her commentary about the clouds, and Loser's Lurgy. She's growing on him. And he's her. And love that's supported by friendship and a genuine adoration of the other person's personality is the best and most lasting kind there is.
Frankly, those two not only need each other, they deserve each other. They're both wonderful, kind, caring people, who just need a bit of the other to be complete. Like S'mores. Separately, they're good. But together they're - unstoppable!
