Harry and Hermione
Our post-OotP thoughts: If there's something going on between the two of them, JKR does an awfully good job covering it up, because we can't see any canon proof hinting at it. "Canon proof? There's plenty!" Harry/Hermione fans say. You all wrote in with the things that happened in OotP that would suggest Harry and Hermione will be together. Harry pulled her back when Grawp tried to grab her, Harry pulled her down when the centaurs attacked Umbridge, Harry pulled her out of the way when the centaurs attacked Grawp, Harry felt horrible when he thought she was dead... The list goes on. Harry and Hermione are best friends. If you thought your best friend was dead, wouldn't you feel horrible too? If a 16-foot-tall giant with hands the size of trash-can lids was reaching out to grab your best friend, wouldn't you pull her back too? All of this "proof" concedes that Harry does care for Hermione, as he should, but it does not add any weight to the argument behind the possibility of them being anything more than just friends.
That said, here are two well-written cases for a Harry/Hermione pairing:
- Partners and Friends: The Evolving Relationship Between Harry and Hermione by Penny Linsenmayer
- Who Does Hermione Love? by Turambar
Harry and Cho
JKR made it clear at the end of Book 5 that this relationship is over:
"Hey, Harry," said Ron softly, nodding towards the glass window on to the corridor.
Harry looked around. Cho was passing, accompanied by Marietta Edgecombe, who was wearing a balaclava. His and Cho's eyes met for a moment. Cho blushed and kept walking.
"What's -- her -- going on with you and her, anyway?" Ron asked quietly.
"Nothing," said Harry truthfully.
"I -- er -- heard she's going out with someone else now," said Hermione tentatively.
Harry was surprised to find that this information did not hurt at all. Wanting to impress Cho seemed to belong to a past that was no longer quite connnected with him.
Additional proof from the World Book Day chat:
eastbrook4: why did Harry have to split up with Cho Chang? JK Rowling replies -> That's life, I'm afraid. They were never going to be happy, it was better that it ended early!
Harry and Ginny
What we said before Book 5:
"Ginny is infatuated with Harry, but so far Harry hasn't shown any signs of interest in her. Maybe Harry hasn't really noticed her yet because she is Ron's little sister. Ginny will mature, and maybe Harry will begin to notice her more in Book 5. JKR did say that Ginny Weasley would play more of a role in Book 5."
Many people seem to think that because of the new Book 5 revelations about Ginny being over her crush on Harry, the relationship is over, but most Harry/Ginny fans are celebrating. Just like we predicted, Ginny matured in OotP. Ginny had to get over her girlish crush before Harry could possibly notice her for the girl she really is.
JKR layed a great Harry/Ginny clue at the end of the fifth book:
"Who's Cho going out with now anyway?" Ron asked Hermione, but it was Ginny who answered.
"Michael Corner," she said.
"Michael -- but --" said Ron, craning around in his seat to stare at her. "But you were going out with him!"
"Not any more," said Ginny resolutely. "He didn't like Gryffindor beating Ravenclaw at Quidditch, and got really sulky, so I ditched him and he ran off to comfort Cho instead."
Ron looked highly delighted.
"Well, I always thought he was a bit of an idiot," he said. "Good for you. Just choose someone -- better -- next time."
He cast Harry an oddly furtive look as he said it.
This creates a whole new aura of approval. The biggest obstacle a Harry/Ginny relationship would face is getting approval from the Weasley family, and from this excerpt we can see that Ron is not only "OK" with it, he's actually supportive of it.
Another Book 5 excerpt we need to mention:
"Ginny used to fancy Harry, but she gave up on him months ago."
It doesn't say she's over him, it just says she's given up on him.
Here is a good point submitted by iBrooklyBabei:
There is no real canon proof of this, but people can compare Ginny to Lily looks-wise. Both have red hair, and even the actors from the movies look similar. Harry looks exactly like his father. Ginny looks like his mother. Maybe it's history repeating itself.
Here's another subtle clue brought to attention by Sweet Pea:
"Now, the ball will be open only to fourth years and above -- although, you may invite a younger student if you wish --"
Lavender Brown let out a shrill giggle. Parvati Patil nudged her hard in the ribs, her face working furiously as she too fought not to giggle. They both looked around at Harry. -Page 386 of the American version of Goblet of Fire
Every Gryffindor knows that Ginny likes Harry, do they glance at Harry because they think he should ask her? So Ginny has matured and they now have approval from the over-protective older brother. Things are looking good for Harry/Ginny fans.
Ron and Luna
At least half a dozen times throughout OotP Luna is described as looking at Ron "dreamily"; she even called him by his full name, Ronald. When Luna, Hermione and Rita Skeeter are in The Three Broomsticks, after Hermione says, "That's exactly what Little Miss Perfect does want," everybody is silent except for Luna, who is singing "Weasley is Our King" under her breath and sipping her cocktail. While this could be explained away by Luna's eccentricity, this is one ship that's gaining in popularity all the time.
Harry and Luna
When Harry and Luna are in the Room of Requirement, Luna "dreamily" notices that Harry is standing under mistletoe, but Harry jumps out from under it, and she turns very businesslike and tells Harry that was a good idea because it was probably infested with nargles. And thanks to Azyne for pointing out this happy little Harry/Luna moment from OotP:
An odd feeling rose in Harry; an emotion quite different from the anger and grief that had filled him since Sirius's death. It was a few moments before he realised that he was feeling sorry for Luna. Harry looked at her and the new feeling of pity intensified rather painfully.
Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she, too, could see Thestrals. They looked at each other. Luna was smiling slightly. Harry did not know what to say, or to think; Luna believed in so many extraordinary things, yet he had been sure he had heard voices behind the veil, too.
"Are you sure you don't want me to help you look for your stuff?"
She walked away from him and, as he watched her go, he found that the terrible weight in his stomache seemed to have lessened slightly.
Harry, Ron and Hermione Love Triangle
Had to mention this due to the sheer number of times it's been brought up. We're sure Ron likes Hermione, but so far she hasn't shown that much interest in him. Ron likes Hermione but Hermione likes Harry -- could that be possible? Anything is possible, but this isn't a soap opera.
Hermione and Krum
Krum obviously cares for Hermione. She was probably flattered when he asked her to the ball. She might even have gone with Krum to make Ron a little jealous. However, Krum needs to step aside and make way for another guy for Hermione because he is not her type, especially with him being four years older than her.
Hermione and Draco
Not a very good possibility, but here are two good points submitted by Yuliya:
1) The most obvious theory is the love-hate thing they have going on. Draco seems to love to torture Hermione more than the rest of the wonder-trio. The Mudblood thing only works with her and is probably the worst insult any of the Trio get. Draco is like that little boy in elementary school who pulled your pig-tails; Draco does like Hermione.
2) In the second movie there were extremely subtle clues, such as when McGonagall was explaining the legend of the Chamber of Secrets to the class, the camera showed specific glances between the two. JKR said that there were clues that were so subtle you wouldn't even think of them as a clue. Although, those glances could be because of the hatred they have for each other.
Draco warns the Trio several times to keep Hermione away from the Death Eaters at the World Cup, albeit in an insulting way. He also had nothing bad to say about Hermione at the Yule Ball, which is unlike him. Does that mean he cares for her? -Submitted by Rainbowvalley103
NOT HAPPENIN': In the World Book Day chat, JK Rowling essentially squashed this pairing.
Ginny and Draco
Not a likely couple, but it could be a Romeo and Juliet sort of thing. Two families that hate each other and a forbidden romance.
Draco and Pansy
They went to the Yule Ball together, and they are both in Slytherin. Pansy also has a tendency to fawn over Draco when he gets injured.
Ginny and Colin
The two are in the same year and share a common bond -- Harry. Maybe they'll set up a Harry Potter fan club together and start to notice each other. Bit of a stretch, yes.
Ginny and Neville
Maybe Ginny will discover Neville's "inner-beauty." They did go to the Yule Ball together, even if it was a last resort for Ginny.
Bill Weasley and Fleur
Our pre-OOTP predictions were spot on with this one. Bill is now giving Fleur lots of private lessons to help her learn the gift of... tongues. Rumor has it she's giving him "French" lessons on the side.
Percy and Penelope
"Ginny -- What did you see Percy doing, that he didn't want you to tell anyone?"
"Oh that," Ginny giggling, "Well -- Percy's got a girlfriend."
Fred dropped a stack of books on George's head. "What?"
"It's that Ravenclaw prefect, Penelope Clearwater," said Ginny. "That's who he was writing to all summer. He's been meeting her all over the school in secret. I walked in on them kissing in an empty classroom one day." -Chamber of Secrets
Hagrid and Madam Maxime
This is an obvious couple that played an important role in Book 5 and will be interesting to watch in Book 6.
Harry and Susan Bones
"Susan Bones, who had an uncle, aunt, and cousins who had all died at the hands of one of the ten, said miserably during Herbology that she now had a good idea what if felt like to be Harry." -Page 550, of the American Edition of Order of the Phoenix
It might be a stretch, but she could be somebody Harry could relate to (and that could lead to something more.
