Snape is intriguing as a character in the first place but Alan Rickman's portrayal just makes me think that he IS Snape. No one else could have portrayed Snape like him, in my view. Although I did like the look of Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow, with the dark hair and pale skin. Reminded me of Snape when it came on TV a few days ago. 😆

Thats my favourite topic 😃 😛 I love discussing about Snape and Alan Rickman ⭐️ The only man I can imagine as Snape ever !! 👏👏

Well, when I think of Snape, the first thought that comes to my mind is the famous saying - "Love makes us a better human being". 😊 According to me, Snape was never a very good human being. He was boast-ful, proud of himself and considered himself different from the rest (which was true to some extent 😆). On top of that, the constant bullyings by James and Sirius surely made him even more hash by nature. His family background was also responsible for making him what he was. The hard hearted young guy! He always tried to keep himself in a shell, which added to his "hiding himself from the world" nature!

However, the only good thing that ever happened to him was meeting Lily.. and falling in love with her. It was an instant and a lifetime feeling for him ! Calling Lily a "mudblood" was a mistake, one cant always keep calm when he is angry and upset. I dont defend him, but thats how many people would behave when he or she is angry and upset to a level like that! His hatred for James was very well justifed. The bulleyings and on top of that James and Lily's relationship was enough to make him HATE James more than anyone on this planet !

Now coming to his feelings for Harry. Obviously, he would have hated Harry if Lily and James were both alive. However, the fact that Lily died in order to save Harry made him feel protective about Harry. After all, he cannot let Lily's death go in vain. And above all, he was guilty of Lily's death as well, Because after all it was he who had informed Voldemort about the prophecy ! He could never forgive himself for the mistake .. and this made him loyal to Dumbledore and his army, instead of Voldemort !! His sense of loyalty didnt just come out of love but also for his guilt feeling ! That made it stronger ...😊

The way he treated Harry.. I feel it was very obvious. He could see James in front of his eyes.. someone whom he hated more than anyone else on this earth( for valid reasons of course) ! On top of it, he was helpless as he had an unwanted responsibility towards Harry !! It was his weakness which he never wanted to portray in front of anyone, not even to himself i guess! ... And also that he had to act to be the Bad Guy in front of the DE world !

He was partial towards the Slytherins, that goes with two reasons : One was that he was himself a Slytherin and was indeed a True Slytherin ! Also, he had to show to the people that he was a true Dark Lord's servant ! His bullying nature towards Neville, Hermoine, were all very natural ! He had a general hatred towards mudbloods, we all know that! After all, he was of such nature since his childhood. His beliefs and thoughts were still the same about the "mudbloods" and he was a harsh teacher as well. That explains the character of Snape well.

As i said, Dumbledore knew it perfectly well how to use Snape's weaknesses against Voldemort and for the world's benefit. Snape was a brave man... one of the bravest we have ever known. If he hadnt have loved Lily, we could easily imagine him to be the strongest player from Voldemort's army !! However, Love surely made him a better human being...

Just 2 lines describe all about Snape ...

"After all this time...?" ... "ALWAYS"..😊

Awesome Topic! Just what i was looking for!
I watched HP DH2 for the 4th time again and today i actually payed attention to all the other characters except for the trio & i just couldn't help but appreciate Snape's character . Like How cool and noble was he! All the time I was wishing i cud save him.. and when harry is holding Snape's face, and snape is like You have ur mother s eyes. OMG. i was like all over my seat watching that. IT WAS SO POWERFUL! n that memory too when Snape sends his patronus to help Harry. awww... Snape. Even tho i love all the Harry potter characters to bitz (whether good or bad) & for me all of them have their own significane but Snape is definately one the most interesting individual!
For me he is Nothing But Good! Hez the most magnanimous, noble and herioc character and i couldn't stress that enough! He was a true lover, He didn't stop loving lilly even after she got married and protected Harry just because he was lily's son disregarding the fact tht he had james's blood in him too. That shows how greathearted he was!
He risked his life and pretended to be a death eater ,knowing if he gets caught , he cud be tortured to death that still didn't keep him from looking out for Harry!
He was truely a great soul! totallyy totallyy love his character!

Snape is obviously good, even after all the stuff he did. I know some of the things he did was bad, like attempting to throw some creatures/insects on him, I think it was in OoP? He missed obviously but u can't blame him, he sees James in Harry. That doesn't mean his actions were justified but he also did some of the bad things coz he had to keep up his image as the bad guy, lets not forget he was undercover.

Even If I don't agree with you on any of this, how did him bullying Neville (a pureblood that would be welcomed in Voldemorts cause) keep up his image. That my dear was not an image, that was simply Snape. All I have to say here is he bullied Neville to the point that he became the kid's Boggart. That just shows what a disgusting vile person he is. Snape is not 'obviously a good man' but he is neither an evil man.

'You can't blame him', this might surprise you but I can do that easily. Does Harry go around bullying other kids because he was bullied as a child aswell but no he doesn't. Snape could never grow up and see the difference b/w Harry and James and that entirely is his fault. I wish Snape just bullied Harry because while that is not justifiable, I could have overlooked it, but the biggest problem is that he bullied just about everyone he could except his precious Slytherins. The worst of his bullying behaviour was dealt to Neville, atleast Harry fought.

I hate this 'Snape just had to keep up an image' argument because Snape was a highly accomplished in Occlumency, he even surpassed Voldemort in that field so why did he need to bully children to 'keep up an image'.

Snape was bullied but in the end he turned into a bully as well. He basically bullied Harry coz his father bullied him. That is wrong, but then again what else would u do when the boy reminds u so much of the man she preferred to him.

Did Snape also love Alice Longbottom? And did she choose Frank Longbottom? If yes then I'll ignore his bullying behaviour towards Neville.

Did Snape also love Hermione's Mother? And did she choose Hermione's father over him? If yes then am also willing to overlook the bullying behavior towards Hermione

Do you see the problem with that argument you made?
And since you have asked 'What else would you do?', Here's what I would do, I would grow up, I would not bully people because I more than anyone understands what being bullied feels like and I would never in a thousand years want to inflinct that kind of pain on anyone else.

Other than the constant bullying of Harry, I think Snape's actions were justified. I think Snape's biggest mistake was obviously being interested in the dark arts(joining the DE's) and the comment he made on her in the heat of the moment.

Yes, you are right! Snape had every right to threaten Neville with the death of his beloved pet, Snape also had every right to humiliate Hermione infront of her peers time and time again. Snape was justified in making them both cry or nearly cry and fear him (Neville).

Well we all know why Dumbledore defended Snape, coz he was his spy and knew that he was good.

Others didn't have the same view of him. Although, I blame Dumbledore for Snape's death, he asked him to kill Dumbledore so then Malfoy is saved but that cost Snape his life.😭 Also the fact that Arthur Weasley managed to survive Nagini's attack but Snape couldn't.😭

In the end, Snape dying as a hero was a good point and Harry naming his son after him (its a middle name, but better than nothing). However it just makes me think and wish that he survived to live a new life being free, without responsibilities. Hopefully find love again.(that's probably wishing too much but I'm hopeless, in regards to SS😆)

So, yes I think Snape's actions were justified. He basically had to pay with the rest of his life with the choice he made at a young age. 😭😭

I know, I know its a big post but I'm just a big fan of SS 😃 and Alan Rickman!

Bad of course... Nothing he did will ever redeem him for what he was and the things he did.. He was a Death Eater.. He killed people.. he tortured them and did Voldemort's bidding... He is not some sort of a hero he was selfish and cruel... Just because he loved Lily doesn't make him a good person in any context.. Extending that argument one can also say Voldemort was justified because he was an orphan and didn't have any love... Strictly speaking of course...

Snape is by far the most interesting HP character but he is also the character i hate the most... As Dumbledore said "It our choices that make us who we are." And he made the worst choices in the world. He chose to tell Voldemort about the prophesy on Harry...

Oh my after such a long time, i'm talking Harry Potter...!!! This is so awesome.. especially since it's about Snape... This is like a mini party for me!😆
