For those who don't know Bou Kotha Kou is a show that used to air on Star Jalsa produced by Ravi Ojha Productions which ran from 2009-2012. Gustak Dil is remake of BKK. Below is synopsis of the Bengali show (it's not complete story though).
Storyline: Nikhil, who has just celebrated his twenty first birthday, is very excited. He will be going to his ancestral home at PALASHDANGA with his friends and girl friend Neera to celebrate his birthday with his aunt and grand father.
Birthdays has never been a good time for Nikhil, at home his mother has never wished him in this twenty years. Nalini, Nikhil's mother has always blamed Nikhil for the death of her elder son Akash. Nikhil also suffers from extreme guilt and blames himself and cannot treat it as a bad accident. Nikhil and Nilima's relation has always been very strained. Nikhil has tried many a times to win his mother's heart but has failed.
Nikhil along with his friends start his journey to Palashdanga. But Neera unfortunately cannot go along. Mouri (the heroine) an eighteen year old girl is the life and soul of Palashdanga, She is more at home perched on a tree top than she is in a drawing room. Her laughter is infectious as the complications and superficiality of life has not yet touched her. She is a wild and free bird and hates being tied down either by norms or by rules. Her innocence and naivet are intertwined with a strange worldliness. It is a delightful and heady mixture which does not fail to make an impression on even the most cynical person.
Nikhil and Mouri meet for the first time at palashdanga. Nikhil comes to know that Mouri is dearly loved by his aunt and grandfather also how she is the blue eyed girl of the village. They are surprised to know that this young girls' marriage has already been fixed! The group of friends and Nikhil all go to attend Mouri's marriage. But the marriage does not happen - Mouri refuses to marry the boy because of his unjustified demands of dowry. The villagers start saying now she will never get married again - Mouri's parents are at a loss. Mouri realizes that she has brought unhappiness to everyone and decides to leave. She swims the village river which is at a high tide- Nikhil sees her and saves her. The villagers start talking about them.
Nikhil's grandfather tells him to keep the girls' honor he should marry Mouri. Nikhil is completely taken aback - but he is in love with Neera! Nikhil also as an honorable man agrees and gets Mouri to Kolkata. Everyone in the family is shocked. Nikhil openly tells Mouri that he cannot lover her ever but he will take care of her. Nilima is dead against this marriage and tries to figure out ways to throw Mouri out of the house. But Nikhil makes it very clear that she will stay with him in his house.
Thus starts Mouri's journey to be accepted in this house. She comes out a winner in all adverse situations and makes her place in the hearts of the family members. But Nilima does not stop planning - she even instigates Neera to influence Nikhil against Mouri. Neera refuses to participate as she also realizes that Mouri is at no fault. Mouri gradually starts realizing what love is and that she is gradually falling for Nikhil.
On the other hand she also realizes Nikhil's dilemma and the constant pressure he is in. She decides to leave his house and go back to Palashdanga. She goes and tells Neera that she understands their plight also and wishes them all the best for the future. At Mouri's house in Palashdanga her parents are completely unaware that Mouri has left her in-laws house for good. Mouri starts over working herself to forget Nikhil and starts spending her days and nights at the local dispensary.
Meanwhile an epidemic breaks out in the village and Mouri also contaminates the disease. Nikhil comes to know of the epidemic and rushes to Palashdanga with medicines. Mouri tells him that he has done his bit now he is free to live his life - Nikhil and Neera were getting engaged soon.
Mouri tells her parents the whole story though completely heart broken but they support Mouri in her decision - they would not want her to live where she did not get her due respect. Mouri starts studying again to be able to stand on her own feet.
As the day of the engagement nears Nikhil realizes that some where he has also started loving Mouri in this scenario he cannot get engaged to Neera. He breaks the news to Neera. The whole family turns against him. But Neera realizes that Nikhil's happiness was only with Mouri. She asks Nikhil to go and get Mouri back. Neera leaves for London for further studies.
Nikhil goes to Palashdanga, he confesses his love for Mouri for the first time. For the first time they are together as husband and wife.
Nilima is still not convinced of the idea and reaches Palashdanga. Mouri asks Nikhil to go back to Kolkata and tells Nilima she will come into their house only when they will give her the due respect and love that a daughter -in-law deserved. She makes Nikhil promise that they will not be in touch till she had achieved what she wanted.
Thus starts Nikhil and Mouri's journey as individuals. Nikhil stops taking money from his parents and starts working to support himself. His relationship with his mother becomes even colder. Nilima tries to get closer to him but Nikhil has put up a wall around him. Nikhil for the first time realizes what living on his/her means. He struggles to become independent and waits for the day when he and Mouri will be together again.
Meanwhile Mouri's college in the village shuts down and she travels to Kolkata to continue her studies and become equal and apt for the Nikhil's society. Nikhil is not aware that Mouri is in Kolkata.
Mouri starts taking tutions to support herself. She starts teaching a small child named MILI - the daughter of SAGAR SEN; known as a star maker in his days but now he has lost everything. There is a lot of rumor around him, some say he had killed his wife and after that he had lost his touch, some say he still had the spark in him. Though not interested in all the gossip, the little that Mouri saw of him she realized that though he wore the mask of a bad guy he was actually very hard working and committed.
One of these days SAGAR gets an offer of a show- if he was successful he could revive his lost name and respect in the industry. SAGAR becomes a changed man and starts training a new girl to launch her in his show. MILI is very happy to see her otherwise brooding and angry father happy and MOURI is happy for MILI. But in the turn of fate a few days before the show the girl leaves SAGAR.
SAGAR had mortgaged till his last penny in the show, broken he again gives himself up to alcohol. MILI is very scared to see her father like this. Slowly they start losing their assets. SAGAR's old time rival comes and tells him that he is launching a show with the girl he trained so many days. SAGAR says that only he could make a star and everyone cheated! The rival challenges him "could he make an ordinary girl like MOURI a star also?" SAGAR takes up the challenge but Mouri refuses.
MOURI meanwhile has grown an attachment towards MILI and she knew that SAGAR was at no fault. MOURI knew what it was like to live for a dream and how it hurts when it shatters. MOURI agrees and challenges SAGAR to make her a star if he could!
