Chapter 11

Gulaal entered her room and shut the door forcefully. She was so mad at Kesar. "Talliji kahan hai?",she imitates Kesar making a face "kyun Talliji ko maine apne pallu mein baandh ke rakha hai kya?mujhe kaise pata hoga?aur itni bhi kya urgent baat hai ki office se aate hi uske baare mein poochne laga?Chai aur nashta main banaao aur haal-chaal pooche jaa rahe hain Talliji ke.Gulaal,yeh sab lakde na ek hi type ke hote hain.jahan achi si ladki dikh jaaye bas usi ke peeche peeche'.",Gulaal is now pacing up and down the room continuously "lekin tu kyun itna soch rahi hai,woh uski life hai,jo chaahe kare.tujhe kyun problem ho rahi hai?ab yeh sab baatein sochna bandh kar aur shaant ho jaa.",she takes a deep breath and tries to calm herself. After some time when she feels completely fine she goes down with a smile on her face. But all thoughts of calm and peace fly right out of the window and a frown replaces the smile when she sees Kesar laughing and talking to Talii. Kesar looks at Gulaal coming down the stairs and is surprised when she turns her face away from him. Talli calls out "Gulaal,acha hua tum aa gayi. aaona baitho yahan hamaare saath.Kesar kitni interesting stories suna raha hai.tum bhi suno na,bahut mazaa aayega." Gulaal forces a tight smile and says "nahi mujhe kitchen mein thoda kaam hai aur waise bhi main yeh sab sun chuki hoon tho tum log baatein karo". Gulaal walks off and Kesar thinks "kya hua ise?kuch tho gadbad hai'.",before he could think of a reason Talli continues on with her questions and he smiles at her curiosity. Actually Talli had not been listening to his stories instead she had been grilling him about Dushyant bha's past. She wanted to know everything about him. He soon guessed that Talli had a huge crush on his brother and the thought of the talkative, boisterous Talli with his sensitive, introvert older brother somehow brought a smile to his face.

Kesar keeps trying to speak to Gulaal through out the evening but each time she successfully avoids talking to him. By dinnertime Kesar is totally frustrated "yeh aaj kya ho gaya hai ise?pehle tho kabhi isne aise behave nahi kiya.phir aaj achanak se kya ho gaya?". She had not talked to him even once since evening and it made him restless. He tries talking to her as she is going to her room to rest for the night but once again she doesn't give him any clear answers. Instead she bids a nonchalant goodnight and shuts the door on his face. Kesar is utterly confused and dejected. The same state of affairs continues the next morning too. Finally Kesar gets angry and thinks to himself "bas bahut ho gaya.ab main nahi jaaunga uske peeche.use baat nahi karni tho theek hai.main bhi usse baat nahi karunga.kya samjhthi hai apne aap ko?use kya lagta hai ki main usse baat kiye bina nahi reh paaunga.ab jab tak woh khud mere paas nahi aati main uski taraf dekhunga bhi nahi". Kesar comes to the breakfast table and when Gulaal serves him paratha, he says to Panba who was sitting nearby "Baa,main aaj naashta nahi kar paaunga.main bhool gaya.meri aaj ek urgent meeting hai aur uske liye mujhe thodi tayyari karni hai.isliye chalta hoon", and he walks off without even sparing a glance at Gulaal. Gulaal is hurt and though she realizes that his indifference is the result of her rude behaviour towards him she still feels the pain.

Kesar had not lied when he said that he had an urgent meeting. He was supposed to meet the guy Motaba had told him about. He was a private investigator called Akhilendra Sharma who was supposed to be very discreet and quite good at what he did. Kesar meets him and gives him all the details and also makes him understand the sensitivity of the issue. " Kesar ji main aapke pitaji ki bahut izzat karta hoon aur unke mere upar bahut se ehsaan hain.isliye aap bilkul chinta mat kijiye.aap mujhe saare details de dijiye aur main poori koshish karoonga ki jald se jald aapke bhai ko doondh nikaaloon. Don't worry kisiko kaano kaan khabar nahi hogi aur main sirf aap ko contact karunga",Sharma replies. Kesar provides him with all the details of his brother and Jenny and leaves the PI's office.

Back in his own office Kesar remains disturbed. He had a huge workload for the day yet he is not able to concentrate. He knows that he behaved rudely to Gulaal in the morning "lekin main bhi kya karta, kitna try kiya ki usse baat karoon par usne meri taraf dekha bhi nahi isliye mujhe gussa aagaya.yeh ladki bhi na mujhe paagal karke hi chodegi.par uska mujhse yoon naaraz rehna mujhe bilkul acha nahi lag raha.itna saara kaam pada hai lekin main bilkul concentrate nahi kar paa raha hoon.aisa kab tak chalega?main aaj sham ko kisi na kisi tarah se usse baath karne ki koshish karunga aur usse jaankar rahunga ki aakhir problem hai kya",with this thought settled in his mind,he decides to work without any further distractions.

Meanwhile at home Talli is in her room looking at the family albums and she is amazed to see Dushyant so cheerful and happy in the photos. "Dushyantji kitne alag lag rahe hain inme aur ab tho bahut kam hanste hain aur zyaada baat bhi nahi karte.maine kal kitni koshish ki unse baatcheeth karne ki par woh sirf haan yaa na mein jawab de rahe the", and as she is thinking about Dushyant,Sudha enters her room. "Talli,tu hamesha Dushyantji ke peeche kyun lagi hui hai.Tu Kesar ke saath waqt kyun nahi bithaathi.woh tere liye bilkul sahi hai.Tu uske saath khush rahegi".

Talli: "lekin Sudhadi mujhe tho Dushyant ji pasand hain".

Sudha: "Talli,bachon jaisi baatein mat kar.Tu jaanti bhi hai tu kya keh rahi hai?Dushyantji tumse umr mein kaafi bade hain aur unse shaadi ki baat tho tu bhool hi jaa kyunki woh kabhi shaadi nahi karne waale".

Talli "kyun Sudhadi,aisa kyun keh rahi hain aap?"

Sudha: "pata nahi unke jeevan mein koi ladki thi jo'..mujhe theek se nahi pata aur hum unke baare mein kyun baat kar rahe hain.tu tho bas yeh soch ki Kesar ke dil mein tu apne liye kaise jagah banayegi aur mujhe poora yakeen hai ki tu aur Kesar ek doosre ke liye bilkul sahi hain". She smiles fondly at Talli and leaves the room. Talli remains lost in thought about Dushyant's past.

Kesar comes back home with a renewed determination to talk to Gulaal and get to the root of the problem. He looks for her everywhere but he doesn't see her so finally he asks Rewa, "Gulaal kahaan hai?dikhaayi nahi de rahi". Rewa looks at him mischeviously and says in a very serious tone "woh tho chali gayi apne ghar". A sudden panic grips Kesar and he screams "chali gayi matlab! aise kaise chali gayi, kisi ne roka nahi use aur usne mujhse ek baar bhi nahi bola ki woh ghar chodke jaa rahi hai'..". before he could continue with his complaints Rewa laughs out aloud "arre buddhu woh ghar chodke nahi gayi.uski behen Roopa ko dekhne ladkewaale aa rahe the isliye Gulaal apne ghar gayi hai.raat tak waapis aajaayegi.waise tu itna kyun bechain ho raha hai?kal se dekh rahi hoon tum dono ke beech kuch jhagda hua hai kya?dono ek doosre se baat hi nahi kar rahe ho". Kesar is embarrassed by his outburst and tries to cover up "nahi kuch nahi hua", and he walks away.

Dushyant had finished his dinner and had gone to the backyard where there is a beautiful garden. This was his most favourite place in the entire house. This was his sanctuary. He came here to collect his thoughts and think about his past, about Gauri. Suddenly he hears a cough and he looks back "arre Talliji aap yhaan kya rahi hain?"

Talli: "yeh sawaal main bhi tho aapse pooch sakti hoon".

Dushyant: with a small smile "haan yeh bhi sahi hai.mujhe yeh jagah bahut pasand hai".

Talli: "mujhe bhi yeh jagah kaafi pasand hai.yeh ped, paudhe, inse baat karne mein kitna mazaa aata haina.insaano se baat karna kitna boring hai".

Dushyant: "sorry Talliji mujhe pata hai ki main aapse zyaada baat nahi karta.please bura math maaniye aur mujhe yeh jagah isliye achi lagti hai kyunki yahaan sukoon milta hai, shaanti milti hai".

Talli: "baap re tab tho mujhe yahaan se jaana chahiye kyunki main jahaan jaati hoon na wahaan phir sukoon aur shaanti ka atha-patha nahi hota". Dushyant laughs out loud at this and Talli is surprised too "Dushyantji, aapko hanste rehna chahiye.aap kitne ache lagte hain hanste hue", she gives him a wide smile and leaves the place. Dushyant keeps looking at her walking away with the smile frozen on his face.

By the time Gulaal came back it was late. Her brother had come to drop her. She was happy that Roopa's alliance was fixed. The marriage may even take place as soon as next month. But though she was happy to meet her family she still thought about her fight with Kesar. She had acted so childish and she didn't even know why. Everyone had noticed her unhappiness back at her place and thought she was missing Vasant. If only they knew the truth, she thought. She takes a deep breath and enters her room. "Gulaal tum waapis aa gayi main kabse wait kar raha hoon!", Kesar's voice startles her and she sees him sitting in a chair near the study table. Gulaal remembers his attitude in the morning and her face hardens "tum kya rahe ho yahan pe? jaao apne kamre mein.mujhe tumse baat nahi karni".

Kesar: "nahi, main nahi jaaunga,tab tak nahi jaaunga jab tak yeh na jaan loon ki aakhir tumhaari naarazgi ki wajah kya hai?"

Gulaal: "theek hai tum nahi jaooge tho main chali jaati hoon". Gulaal tries to leave the room but Kesar is faster and he gets hold of her arms and pulls her close "nahi Gulaal main tumhe bhi jaane nahi doonga.ab bataao baath kya hai?" Gulaal avoids looking at him and her eyes are welling up with tears.Kesar sees this and he lowers his voice "Gulaal,bataao na baat kya hai?agar tum mujhse nahi kahogi tho sach keh raha hoon paagal ho jaaunga. Dekho mujhe gussa math dilao aur jaldi apni naraazgi ki wajah bathao". Gulaal in a very sulky tone "kyun Talliji se baat karke mann bhar gaya kya? Tum uske saath kitne khush the tho jaaona uske paas,apni nayi dost ke paas". Kesar looks lost for a second, then realization strikes and he smirks "acha tho yeh baat hai.tum jealous thi.hahahaha'..tum mere aur Talli ko lekar jealous feel kar rahi thi.I can't believe it",Kesar starts laughing and steps away from her. Gulaal looks at him accusingly "tum hans rahe ho haan hanso.bahut mazaa aa raha hoga na. main bhi kitni paagal hoon.mujhe laga ki main tumhari sabse achi dost hoon lekin tumhaare liye tho main koi maayne nahi rakhti na",Gulaal goes towards the door and tries to open it. Kesar immediately stops laughing and stops her,turning her around placing his hands on either side of her on the door "Gulaal phir kabhi yeh math kehna ki tum mere liye koi maayne nahi rakhti.tum shaayad yeh nahi jaanti yaa phir samjhana nahi chahti ki tum mere liye kitni important ho.Talli bahut achi ladki hai lekin woh mujhme nahi Dushyant bha mein interested hai aur woh mujhse sirf unke baare mein pooch rahi thi". Gulaal is mesmerized by the intensity of his gaze and his words. She is unable to say anything and cries silently. Kesar looks at her tears and is amused "ab tum ro kyun rahi ho?kitna roti ho. Aur ab koi filmy dialogue mat jhaadna ki yeh khushi ke aansoon hain and all,ok". Both of them smile and Kesar brings his hands towards her face to wipe away her tears. As soon as he touches her face Gulaal stops smiling and looks in to his eyes intently. Kesar wipes away her tears with his thumb but doesn't move away. A shivery excitement gripped them both. Kesar forgets everything for a moment looking deeply in to her eyes. It is as if the world did not exist, there was no Vasant, no family, no society only Gulaal and this moment. He wanted to stop himself. She wanted to stop him. but both found it impossible to do so. They were both spell-bound and Kesar had no other choice but to come closer to her. Her breathing quickened. Gulaal closes her eyes in surrender when she feels his breath on her face.

Suddenly Kesar's phone rings and he stops. Gulaal opens her eyes in confusion. They both look at each other and realize how close they were. Kesar instantly moves away and his hands leave her face immediately. Gulaal is still in a daze. The phone ring continues and Kesar quickly looks away from Gulaal and takes the call. Kesar's voice shakes her up and she realizes "hey bhagwaan,agar yeh phone call nahi aata tho.mujhe kya ho gaya tha?lekin Kesar bhi tho'.mujhe kuch samajh nahi aa raha", she covers her face with her hands and groans. Kesar picked up the call which was from the PI "Kesarji, mujhe kuch suraag mile hain.kya aap mere saath chalenge shaayad aapke aane se thodi madad mil jaaye". Kesar replies enthusiastically "haan main zaroor chaloonga aap ke saath.kab chalna hai?" Sharma replies "kal subah nikal jaayenge aur saath mein thode kapde rakh lijiyega kyunki safar thoda lamba hai.aur aate aate shaayad teen chaar din lag jaaye", and he gives Kesar the travel details. "theek hai main kal subah pahunch jaaunga". He looks at the phone for a second and turns around to see Gulaal in the same spot with her face hidden in her hands. He calls her name hesitantly "Gulaal". She looks up,trying hard to control her emotions and he speaks "mujhe kal business ke silsile mein baahar jaana hoga.shaayad teen,char din lag jaayenge waapis aane mein".Gulaal nods at him silently and he continues "bahut raat ho gayi hai mujhe chalna chahiye". She nods once again but doesn't move. Kesar comes closer to open the door trying hard to avoid looking at her. She suddenly realizes that she is standing in his way and moves aside. Kesar says "apna khayaal rakhna Gulaal", and he walks away.

Kesar tells Motaba about the real reason for the journey and then gets ready to leave quite early in the morning. He thinks of going to Gulaal's room to say goodbye but somehow he doesn't get the courage. Something had changed between them last night and now he did not know what to say to her. Kesar is just about to step outside and he looks up to Gulaal's room to see if he could catch a glimpse of her one last time before going. And there she was standing in a beautiful orange saree, hair still wet and a small red bindi adorning her face. He looks at her transfixed for a moment.and then he sees her give him a small smile and a thumbs up signal wishing him luck. He smiles back at her and gives her a wave. He turns around and steps out of the house feeling cheerful.

The next three days were the worst for Gulaal. She had never felt this lonely and unsettled before. She had wanted to call up Kesar and talk to him, know how he is doing? but did not have the courage to speak to him. That night, that moment had changed everything between them. She still couldn't believe it. She thought about that moment all the time. It made her restless and confused but at the same time her hearbeat quickened and a faint blush appeared on her cheeks when she thought about the intimacy of the moment."yeh kya hogaya hai mujhe?har pal sirf Kesar ke baare mein soch rahi hoon.woh yahaan nahi hai phir bhi mujhe aisa kyun lagta hai ki woh mere aas paas hai, mere saath hai.maine hamesha use apna sabse acha dost maana hai lekin kya woh mere liye sirf ek dost hai yaa usse badhkar kuch aur?kya main usse pyaar karne lagi hoon?", she smiles unknowingly but soon the smile slips "nahi ,yeh main kya soch rahi hoon?main usse pyaar nahi kar sakti.kaise kar sakti hoon? Meri life itni complicated hai aur ab yeh sab''", she was standing in the kitchen,deep in her thoughts and doesn't realize that she had put salt in the tea and not sugar. Rewa comes near and sees this "Gulaal kya kar rahi ho?chai mein koi namak daalta hai kya?" Gulaal comes back to reality and blushes "woh main'", Rewa cuts in "Kesar ke bare mein soch rahi thi?".

Gulaal: "tumhe kaise pata chala?"

Rewa: " main andhi nahi hoon Gulaal mujhe pata hai. tum use miss kar rahi ho isliye kyunki tum usse pyaar karti ho". Gulaal looks at her shocked for a moment unable to say anything. She tries to deny "nahin Rewa, yeh tum kya keh rahi ho? aisa kuch nahi''", Rewa once again jumps in "Gulaal apne aap se jhoot bolna bandh kardo,tumhaare chehre par tumhaare dil ka haal saaf saaf likha hai". Gulaal remains quiet for a moment and then she hugs Rewa "main kya karoon Rewa?,mujhe kuch samajh nahi aa raha.yeh sab theek nahi haina. duniya ki nazar mein Vasant mera pati hai chaahe is rishte ke maayne ho ya na ho.aur agar parivaar waalon ko pata chalega tho kya hoga?Rewa,main kya karoon?main yeh sab jaanti hoon par phir bhi apne aapko nahi rok sakti.main Kesar se pyaar karti hoon". She moves back with a smile on her face and shyly says "haan Rewa main usse pyaar karti hoon".

Rewa: "Gulaal tumhaare mann mein koi paap nahi hai.main jaanti hoon.tum Kesar se sacha pyaar karti ho aur jab waqt aayega tho poora parivaar bhi samajh jaayega. Aur phir samaaj, uske baare mein tho sochna hi bandh kardo. Woh jis rishte ko maante hain woh tho kabhi tha hi nahi.jo insaan apni patni ko pehle din chod kar bhaag jaaye woh pati kehlaane laayak nahi. Main Vasant bha se bahut pyaar karti hoon lekin yeh main bhi samajhti hoon ki unhone jo tumhaare saath kiya hai woh bikul galat hai. aur tum ghabraao mat,main hamesha tumhaara saath doongi.aur main jaanti hoon ki Kesar ke hote hue tumhe kisi aur ki zaroorat kabhi mehsoos nahi hogi ". Gulaal is over whelmed by Rewa's support and clings to her, "lekin Rewa mujhe tho yeh bhi nahi pata ki Kesar ke dil mein kya hai? aur main abhi se ''", Rewa laughs out loud "arre Gulaal,us buddhu ka bhi yehi haal hoga wahan pe.dekhlena aate hi tumhaare paas dauda chala aayega aur tumse apni dil ki baat kehdega".

Gulaal had been feeling a lot better after this talk with Rewa. She realized her love for Kesar and it made her truly happy. She knew now why she felt so jealous, why she acted so childish, why she felt so content and secure when he was near her. Her chest felt constricted but at the same time her joy was struggling to break free. She finally understood "yehi tho hai pyaar ka ehsaas jo chubtha tho hai par saath hi saath itni khushi bhi deta hai ki dil karta hai cheekh cheekh kar sabko bataa doon". She went to his room and twirled around like a little girl. Gulaal goes to the bedside table and looks at his photo and smiles shyly. She takes the frame in her hand and caresses it lovingly.

Gulaal wakes up early in the morning with a smile "aaj tho Kesar waapis aane waala hai.kitna miss kiya tumhe maine Kesar.mujhe poora yakeen hai ki tumne bhi mujhe miss kiya hoga.aaj main sirf tumhari pasand ki sab cheezein banaaungi.dekhna aate hi tum khush ho jaaoge aur tumhari khushi se badhkar mujhe aur kya chahiye.main tumse apne rookhepan ke liye bhi maafi maang loongi, Kesar bas tum jaldi se aajaoo". She goes down for the usual morning arti and Rewa teases "arre kya baat hai aaj tho kuch zyada hi sundar lag rahi ho. Aaj kuch special hai kya?" Gulaal tries to glare at her but she fails and starts blushing. Today she was in her own happy world waiting for Kesar to come back. But he doesn't show for lunch. She gets upset and tries asking Motaba but he doesn't know when Kesar will be back "usne kal kaha tha ki shaayad ek,do din aur lag jaaye.usne tumse baat nahi ki beta", she nods her head silently indicating no. Yet she waits for him and doesn't even have lunch or dinner. It's almost midnight and Kesar has not yet returned.She tries calling him but his phone is switched off. Finally she decides to go to her room, "shaayad woh aaj nahi aa raha.lekin ek phone tho karna chayiye na use.use pata hona chahiye ki uske peeche gharwaale kitne pareshaan honge.main kitni pareshaan ho jaaungi.aane do use..".

Gulaal takes off her bindi and puts it on the side of the mirror and looks into the mirror. Disappointment was written all over her face. She sighs deeply and is about to go to the washroom to change when she hears a knock on the door. She quickly goes to open it and is surprised to find Kesar standing there with his head hung down. She smiles happily "Kesar tum aagaye.maine tumhara kitna intezaar kiya pata hai aur tumhara phone kyun switched off aa raha tha?...", she senses something wrong when Kesar doesn't respond. She hesitantly touches his shoulder "Kesar,Kesar kya hua'..kuch bolo'..",she is shocked silent when Kesar hugs her tightly and she could hear sobs racking his body. Gulaal gets scared and comforts him patting his back "Kesar,kya hua.tum ro kyun rahe ho?bataoo Kesar,kuch tho bolo, Kesar tumhaari yeh haalat mujhe daraa rahi hai". Kesar remains quiet for a moment sobbing silently and hugging her tightly as if that was his only salvation. Gulaal pushes him back little bit and tries looking at his face. His eyes were bloodshot indicating his utter despair and his face crumpled up in grief. She had never seen him like this before. She wipes away his tears and coaxes him to tell her what happened "Kesar,please mujhse kaho kya hua hai? shaayad hum milkar iska koi upaay soch sakte hain.bataoo Kesar". Gulaal's sweet voice breaks him and he tries talking "Gulaal'..woh''Vasant bha ''.Gulaal'..",and once again he starts crying. Gulaal is gripped by a very terrible feeling and asks in a small voice "Kesar, kya hua Vasant ko?" Kesar finally speaks "Vasant bha hamein sach mein chod kar chale gaye Gulaal.woh ab is duniya mein nahi rahe".
