Chapter 10

Gulaal opened her eyes. She sat straight on her bed. She was feeling very sleepy and weak. She checked her watch. She was shocked- it was 9:00AM. She had to catch the bus at 9:15AM. She woke up hurriedly, she felt a bit dizzy. She held her head with her hands. Just then, Poonam Ba entered and said, "Teri Naani ki tabiyat bohot kharab ho gayi hai. Mujhe unhe dekhne jaana padega", worried. "Naani ko kya hua? Main bhi chalti hun aapke saath", said Gulaal surprised. "Tere kaka aur kaki ji ke saath jaa rahi hun, tera ticket confirm nahi ho paaya hai. Tu jaldi taiyyar ho ja, office nahi jaana hai kya?", said Poonam Ba hurriedly. "Haan, main jaldi taiyyar ho jaati hun", replied Gulaal.

Gulaal came down hurriedly, she was still feeling weak but she tried to brush it aside. At the gate she saw, Kesar loading Poonam Ba's luggage into his car and trying to pacify Poonam Ba who has a habit of getting tensed up very easily. "Aap chinta mat ki jiye, Baa. Aapki train miss nahi ho gi aur Naani ji bhi jaldi theek ho jayengi", said Kesar resting his hands on Poonam Baa's shoulders trying to calm her down. Gulaal smiled at this.Poonam Baa said holding Kesar's hand, "Mujhe chinta toh Gulaal ki bhi hai. Tu uska khayaal rakhega naa?". Kesar turned and looked at Gulaal, he became quiet. Poonam Baa looked at Gulaal and said, "Woh Kesar ne zidd ki woh mujhe station tak chhodh dega. Main toh keh rahi thi ki tu office ke liye late ho jaayega par tu toh iski zidd jaanti hai na". Gulaal smiled and nodded. Kesar opened the car's door for Poonam Baa to seat and said, "Chaliye Baa, samay se pohonchna zaroori hai". Poonam Baa sat into the car and gestured Gulaal to get in too. Gulaal looked at Kesar who was holding the car's door and standing near her. Kesar did not look at her and said, "Tujhpe koi zor nahi dega, tujhe nahi aana toh mat aa" and shut the car's door. Gulaal was again stung by his words. As Kesar sat on the driver's seat, Gulaal simultaneously sat in the front seat. Kesar looked at her and Gulaal looked back at him. Kesar broke the eyelock and started driving.

After bidding Poonam Baa bye at the station. Kesar drove Gulaal towards office but they stopped just a bit far from the office. Gulaal looked at him surprised as to why he stopped the car. "Yanhi se chali jaa, tujhe koi mere saath dekh lega toh phir tujhe bohot problem ho jayegi". Gulaal looked at him, she couldn't take his cold behaviour anymore, "Uss din se naraaz hai na mujhse. Meri galati kya hai?", asked Gulaal. Kesar looked away from her and replied, "Teri koi galaati nahi hai, Gulaal. Saari galtiyaan toh maine ki hain, bas unhe sudhaar raha hun", in a stern voice. Gulaal placed a hand on his shoulder, Kesar's attention immediately turned towards her touch. She asked, "Itna ukhda ukhda sa kyun hai? Kal raat bhi tune jis tarah se baat ki...", "Derr ho rahi hai Gulaal", said Kesar cutting her off. Gulaal stopped, she was very hurt and angered. "Theek hai", she said and swallowed her anger. She tried to unfasten her seat belt, but it was not opening. Kesar's attention drew towards her struggle. He came close to her, took his hands close to her waist and started unfastening the seat belt. Gulaal glared at him, Kesar looked at her and felt his heartbeat rising with her breath blowin on his face, he then realised that they had come very close. He unfastened the seat belt and drew back. Gulaal opened the car's door and walked off. Kesar sat in the car, trying to calm himself down.

Gulaal was feeling weak and drowsy again as she was standing in Dushyant's cabin. Dushyant looked at her and asked, "Aap theek toh hai na, Nirja". "Haan. Main theek hun", Gulaal replied promptly. Gulaal gathered the required files and took her leave. As she came out of the cabin, she saw Kesar talking to someone nearby. Kesar looked at her, he frowned and continued talking to the person. Gulaal vision grew hazy, she felt dizzy and started breathing heavily. Kesar's attention moved towards her, he tried hard to focus on the other person. Gulaal black out and as she was about to fall unconscious, Kesar caught hold of her. She could only see hazy image of Kesar frantically trying to wake her up. Kesar patted Gulaal's cheeks frantically and urged, "Gulaal! Gulaal! Uth. Koi paani lao". One of the employees brought a glass of water. Kesar sprinkled water on Gulaal's face and urged her to wake up. Dushyant had come out of his cabin, he immediately said, "Koi faayeda nahi. Inhe hospital le jaana hoga, main inhein le jaata hoon". As soon as he completed his sentence, Kesar lifted Gulaal in his arms and rushed towards his car.

At the hospital,

The doctor checked Gulaal, she was still unconscious. Kesar was tensed, he asked the doctor, 'Yeh theek toh ho jaayengi na?". The doctor looked at Kesar and said, "Inhe bohot kamzori aa gayi hai, maine glucose ka bottle chaddha diya hai, unhe jaldi hosh aa jayega". Kesar breath a sigh of relief. "Waise aap patient ke kya lagte hain?", asked the doctor. Kesar looked at Gulaal and answered, 'Main inka pati hun". The doctor said, "Aapko toh inka poora dhyaan rakhna chahiye, she's anaemic. Shayad kucch dino se acchi tarah se khaya peeya nahi hai, kucch zyaada stress le liya. Aainda se dhyaan rakhiyega apni patni ka". "Ji", nodded Kesar. The doctor left and Kesar sat near Gulaal. The nurse who was in charge of Gulaal asked, "Kitne saal ho gaye hain shaadi ko". Kesar looked at her bewildered. "Aisa kya dekhta hai, man! Kitna waqt hua shaadi ko", shot back the chirpy nurse. Kesar looked down and replied, "Do saal"."Tab toh bohot saara fights kiya hoga pehle. Iss baar itna serious kya karta hai, ki ladki ne apni tabiyat kharab kar li",asked the nurse. Kesar looked at Gulaal, she moved a bit, Kesar became animated and took his hand near her forehead. She became still, Kesar was apprehensive to touch her and withdrew his hand. The nurse remarked, "Itna jaan chhidakta hai apni wife par toh jhagda itna lamba kyun khinchna? Tumhara toh jaan aatka hua hai apni wife par". Kesar squeezed out a smile. The nurse left. Kesar looked at Gulaal lovingly, he took his hand near her forehead and caressed her forehead. Gulaal stirred and slowly opened her eyes. She looked at Kesar curiously, Kesar withdrew his hand. "Main...", but before Gulaal could complete Kesar said, "Tu behosh ho gayi thi toh main tujhe hospital le aaya. Doctor ne kaha tu jaldi theek ho jayegi". Gulaal looked away from Kesar. Kesar asked concerned, "Kya hua?Ab bhi chakkar aa rahe hain?". Gulaal looked at him and said, "Tu jaanta hai na mujhe hospital mein jo medication ki smell aati hai bilkul bardassht nahi hoti". "Tu abhi bhi bohot weak hai, tujhe aaram karna chahiye", replied Kesar. Gulaal twisted her face and looked away. Kesar sighed.

Talli was sitting on the terrace.The whole family had gone for a Jagrata, they had been invited for. Talli had made some excuse to stay as she wanted to spend quality time with Kesar. She saw Kesar's car come. She jumped up excitedly, "Aarey Kesar aa gaya". She rushed down towards the gate. She saw Kesar holding Gulaal in his arms and entering Gulaal's house. Talli was shocked out of her wits.

As Kesar was going to place Gulaal on her bed, his one foot fell on Gulaal's slippers in her room and he fell over Gulaal landing on her bed. Kesar had maintained some distance from completely falling on her resting his hands on the bed. Gulaal looked at Kesar shocked. Kesar looked into Gulaal's eyes and he was a goner. His heartbeat accelerated, his breathing became a tad bit difficult. Gulaal looked away breaking the eye contact. Kesar got up on his feet. An awkward silence was there. Kesar tried to ease the situation and remarked, "Chappal yahan wahan rakha hua hai aur mujhse kehti hai ki main apne kamra idhar udhar kar deta hoon". Gulaal pouted and said, "Tujhe dekhke chalna chahiye tha, ismein meri kya galti hai". "Haan saari galatiyaan toh humesha meri hoti hain", said Kesar frowning a bit. Gulaal became quiet. Kesar came towards her and asked, "Yeh kya halaat bana rakhi hai apni? Tujhe pata hai tujhe anaemia hai toh khaane peene main itni gair zimmedaari kyun?". Gulaal answered feebly, "Woh...main samajhti hun lekin...". "Tu nahi samjhti ,Gulaal", shot back Kesar. Gulaal looked at him a bit surprised. "Tu nahi samajhti, kitna darr gaya tha main tujhe iss halaat main dekh ke. Tu nahi samajhti ki meri zindagi main teri kya ahemiyat...", Kesar stopped as he saw Gulaal looking at him trying to grasp what he was saying. "Tu aaram kar", he completed and he was about to leave when Gulaal caught his hand, "Tu mujh par gussa hai toh mujhe kucch bhi kehle par aise ukhda ukhda mat reh". Kesar squeezed her hand and said, "Galatiyaan hum dono se hui, shayyad mujhse thodi zyaada. Par main samajh gaya hun, Gulaal. Uss baat ko lekar maine over react kiya, pata nahin mujhe kya ho jata hai jab...", Kesar stopped realising what he was about to blurt out. "Jab", urged Gulaal. "Tune kucch khaya nahi, main khaane ke liye kucch le kar aata hun", said Kesar and left the room leaving Gulaal contemplating on what Kesar was about to say.
