What happened was the FD wanted this confrontation to happen. We all wanted Sai to give it back to Pakhi, for Pakhi to face this. We also felt that Virat has to answer now and can't run away, so let it be. Hence we couldn't think as how Virat would have felt when he came to know what was being dicussed. Infact, the first statement itself was a continuation of their previous night conversation. He didn't like that she blamed him for Samrat to not return home and even though things became a little alright after she gave him the massage near his neck, he realised that it has turned worse in the living room. He felt that Sai has assumed something and is talking or being angry and was accusing of something. His main worry is if she thinks that they have an affair, if she thinks both have a relationship, not like a physical one, but if the feelings were mutual.

Even if it is true that Pakhi has feelings for him, it is one sided and as long as he is beig strict with Pakhi, she won't be able to cross the line, their relationship will not get tarnished if it is just one sided. But if Virat also reciprocated Pakhi's feelings, there are chances that all of Virat's actions towards Pakhi can get misunderstood or can be seen with a wrong notion and that is exactly what he doesn't want Sai to have.

It makes a huge difference if she thinks Virat reciprocates Pakhi's feelings because that would mean that Sai won't be able to understand his feelings for her, even if she has understood that he should keep the promise given to Pakhi, it would mean that Sai would want to move away and not give a chance to their relationship, it would mean that Sai will stop him from making their relationship a real one.

Also, all of these would also mean that Virat is okay and enjoying Pakhi's love for him, enjoying her attention or care towards him. It would become wrong in many levels and he doesn't want that kind of a misunderstanding between them. He has right now put Pakhi in a place but if Sai thinks their feelings are mutual, Pakhi will have no chance with anyone in her life, no one will accept her as a partner, spouse or Bahu. Tjat seemed more a bigger issue to him than defending Sai when his family members spoke because he knows how they are, also because Sai is already his wife. She has got a husband who loves her and he had himself said that he won't even question Sai or shame Sai if she never develops any feelings for him. But it would become impossible to help Pakhi if people think they both are having an affair.

Anyway, he do need to stand up for his wife, none of these should stop him from standing up for Sai whenever needed.
