Bus, yaar: Buffaloes run amok on the sets of Ghar Ek Sapna

Director Ajai Sinha, who has just returned after a shooting stint in Bihar for his serial Ghar Ek Sapna, has an interesting story to narrate. The director recalls an incident that could have actually resulted into a fatal accident.

Darshan Dave
Ajai says, "We were shooting a chase sequence, where Darshan, who plays Sujit in the serial, was supposed to chase a bus with his jeep. There were three other co-actors with him in the jeep. We had hired six buffaloes for the scene to make the backdrop look real. The buffalos were tied up in one corner when we were shooting the sequence. Darshan was driving the jeep, chasing the bus. Suddenly he saw the buffaloes on the road, one of them charged at him in a fury while the other jumped right into the jeep. A scared Darshan hopped out just in time. Thankfully, he didn't get hurt."

When contacted, Darshan said, "It was a horrible experience and I am still in shock. One of the buffaloes almost climbed on to the jeep while the other one charged at me with its horns. If I had not jumped out of the jeep, I would probably have been dead by now."

Darshan Dave has done a few commercials and telly films.
He makes his debut in a serial with Ghar-Ek Sapna...

A little about your character in Ghar-Ek Sapna …
Sujeet is a newly married, good-looking don from Bihar. He's enraged when he sees a Mumbaiite flirting with his sister-in-law at a wedding in Bihar. He forces the guy to marry her at gun point. For some he is a hero but he is a villain for the rest.

Isn't this too far-fetched?
It is not like Mumbai. These things happen in small towns of Bihar. They also do this if they don't find a suitable match for a girl.

Do you feel this was the right role to debut with on television?
I found this character very positive. I'd a choice between playing Sujeet and the hero. However, I felt that it was better to be strongly negative than being cheaply negative. Anyway, it has always been my childhood fantasy to play a strong, larger than life character.

What have you done before this?
I've done a few commercials besides telly films with Ajai Sinha and Ravi Chopra.

How about films?
I would love to do films but only main leads for me. Otherwise, I am happy doing central characters on television.

Don't you feel that it's difficult to get good film offers once you become a recognisable face on television?
I don't think there are rules like that. You never know. Here singers become actors and film actors become TV actors. The first person who breaks out of the mould becomes a sort of trendsetter. I've never planned my career. I've realised that it doesn't work for me. Today I believe in taking each step at a time and giving off my best. You keep moving ahead if you keep proving yourself at every step. Call it destiny, hard work, or luck but I think that is the way to move in this industry.

Jatin Grewal is a popular model who is making his debut on the small screen with Zaara-Pyaar Ki Saugat.

What attracted you to the show?
There have been a few offers before but I turned them down. I decided only recently that I should do television. I got a call asking me if I was interested in doing this show. I liked the concept and decided to go ahead with it. There has been no show with a Muslim backdrop since almost four years. It has more mass appeal, as 45% of the television viewing audience is Muslims. But at the same time it's not typically Muslim. It is very contemporary.

Rahul happened many years ago. Are you disappointed that your film career hasn't happened?
Not at all! I see it as just the beginning for me. I am still young and kicking. I'm glad that whatever I've achieved so far has been on my own steam.

Are you still modelling?
Yes, I will continue to do fashion shows. Just recently, I did the 'Lakme Fashion Week', Manish Malhotra, and Shahid Aamir's shows. I want to do a blend of both, acting and modelling.

Would you do another television serial as well?
I don't think I'd have the time for that. I would rather concentrate on this show and my modelling assignments.

Any dream role?
I want to play Bond. That is because I just saw the Bond film (laughs). My dream role keeps changing every time I watch a good film.

How about a woman in your life?
I'm single ready to mingle. I am looking for a serious relationship. I don't know if I want to get married or not but I surely want to have babies (smiles).

After playing diametrically opposite characters in Palkhi, Abhay Vakil is relieved at the thought of playing a lady charmer in Zaara-Pyaar Ki Saugat...

A little about your character in Zaara-Pyaar Ki Saugat...
Samar is a lady charmer and is mesmerised by Zaara. He is obsessed with her. He's a positive character but can turn negative if someone tries to take away his love from him. He is justified in his action from his perspective, as he's just being protective and possessive about his girl.

What attracted you to the show?
The fact that it was a Muslim-based show. Most of the shows on television now are Hindu based. There is an overdose of 'karva chaut' happening on television now.

Does it worry you that the show is female-oriented?
Not at all! It does not worry me as long as my role is good. My character has different shades to his personality and is well moulded into the storyline. I also like the way I am dressed on the show. It's good to make a fashion statement on the show. Personally, I love dressing up. One has to face the fact that television is female-oriented unlike films that are male-dominated. This is because there is more female viewer ship on television.

How do you want to see yourself a few years from now?
I want to concentrate on one good show on television at a time. I believe in competing with myself and bettering my previous performance. I have also written a script for a film and am in the process of meeting people from various production houses. Besides, I would also like to act in films. I want to see a positive growth in my career graph

On a wedding shot

Women have no say in choosing their partner in marriage. Allegedly, that's the norm. Here's a jolt — they do! Incidentally, at gunpoint

NIMISHA TIWARI Times News Network

Fathom this: Samman, an educated guy from Mumbai visits a friend in Bihar at a wedding. There, he meets Kakul, a pretty daughter from a politico-business magnate from Patna and charms her with his flirtatious ways. So far, so good. But soon realises that he is a consenting, yet mute spectator, at his own wedding with Kakul… at gunpoint!
Bizarre, yet true! This phenomenon of 'marriage at gunpoint' has found its roots many years ago in northern Bihar, which originated in retaliation to the dowry system. Often called the pakarva bibah (marriage by abduction) in the rustic lingo, over the past two decades, this system has become an accepted norm, rather ruthlessly though.
Ajai Sinha, director of Ghar… ek sapnaa, the forthcoming soap on SaharaOne Television which promises to capture this phenomenon with a punch, says, "Since it's an unknown ritual, I decided to delve into it. What's further interesting is that the bride comes to her husband's house thinking it's 'love' that has brought them together, oblivious of the forced route."
Actor Manoj Bajpai who hails from Bihar, says, "An increasing number of multiplexes are no sign of progress. I would believe that the society has truly evolved if it would get rid of the dowry system. 16 years ago, during my Delhi University days, my friend faced the brunt of this reality. He could not visit his parents (in Bihar) for four years because of the fear of being abducted and forced into marriage. His parents just asked him to stay put there. Honestly, I feel life is worse for a woman in this case since a forced marriage is a soul torturing process."
Bengali actor, Sayantani Ghosh, the female lead of Kakul, affirms that this concept was a revelation to her. Gung-ho about acting in a real life saga, she says, "My role has many an emotion. When I realise the truth, I instinctively express — 'Kaash mere saath aisa na hota', which is also the punch of the story."
In this scenario, it is indeed ironical that a woman 'chooses' her husband, but real happiness is a chanced moment… Premiering tonight, watch the rigmarole of a happy-yet-not-satisfying wedded life in an urban set-up in Ghar…ek sapnaa at 10 pm. Catch this soap Monday-Friday on SaharaOne Television.

Small screen, big dreams
Sitting pretty: Sayantani Ghosh

Look who's dancing to Beedi, Kajra re and Khallas on screen this year — our very own Sayantani Ghosh! The girl who entered drawing rooms across the country with STAR Plus's Kumkum Ek Pyaara Sa Bandhan will be playing the lead in Sahara One's new venture for the weekday 10 pm slot, Ghar — Ek Sapna.

"Ajaiji (Sinha, the director) has given the serial a very filmi look. So there is a lot of dancing in the opening sequence," says Sayantani, set to be introduced as Kakul on December 15. Kakul comes from a political strongman's family in Bihar. The story takes off with her friend's wedding. So all the singing and dancing. "I am dancing to as many as six songs myself," the Bharatanatyam student says. "And by the seventh episode, I get married."

That is, in fact, the violent twist in the tale. A man from Mumbai who flirted with Kakul during the wedding and offended the men in her family is forced to marry her at gunpoint. "Such things happen, don't they?" stresses Sayantani, back in home in between a hectic schedule. "We are putting in mad hours — 16 to 17 a day. In Calcutta, 10-11 hours are maximum."

But Sayantani is hardly complaining. A second runner-up at Sananda Tilottama 2003, Sayantani has always dreamt big. Which is why she took part in Zee TV's Item Bomb contest even when she was set to debut in Tollywood, opposite Prosenjit, no less. After sealing her place here with lead roles in Raju Uncle and Nayak, she decided to go west, and fast. "I do not want to struggle in Mumbai at Rituparna's (Sengupta) age," remarks the 22-year-old.

The wait for Ghar — Ek Sapna has been worth it. "The three-four months before that were trying. I had walked out of Kumkum as my role did not shape up the way I was promised. I suppose they have their TRP-related compulsions but it did not make sense to leave lead roles in Bengal to play second fiddle on television. The offers after that were not satisfactory, but I decided to stick on in Mumbai."

Sayantani was selected for the role of "a dusky girl" by Ajai Sinha, the man behind Astitva and Hasratein whom she had contacted with her profile. This time, Hindi dialogues are no longer a problem for the girl from Behala. "When I started with Kumkum, I needed training but there was no time. My grammar was all over the place. So I used to mug up my lines as best as I could. Today, I am confident enough to improvise and add a word or two!"

What about Tollywood? "I am still shooting for Sujitda's (Guha) film with Bumbada (Prosenjit) and Swastika. It's called Sangharsha."

This is one Bengali babe not afraid to battle it out, at home or away.

PRO-FILE: Harsh Chaya

Express Features Service

Extremely talented and gifted, Harsh Chaya has been around a long time and has been doing real quality work on television as well as films. You first saw him on Doordarshan way back in a show called Khaali Haath where he made his presence felt as the blind music teacher. Ever since he's been seen in memorable performances. Now he is back again with Ajai Sinha's Sahara daily Ghar Ek Sapna which premiered last week. Nitin Joshi in a brief chat with Harsh Chaya.

Tell us about your character in Ghar Ek Sapna.
I play this character called Rishabh—he is one of six brothers and sisters whose parents are Alok Nath and Himani Shivpuri. As with any joint family there are a lot of tensions and small squabbles and Rishabh is the guy who plays the calm mediator. He sorts out things with balanced views for both the warring sides and helps keep the family peace. I play the second child.

What do you like about Rishabh?
The fact that he has a very different perspective from the rest, he is very practical and unbiased. He is very stable.

You are back with Ajai Sinha again...
I have been working with Ajai Sinha for about eight or nine years now and the comfort levels are such that our working relationship has almost became a personal one. What I like about him is he gives each actor the respect he or she deserves. And he lets you be. His creative concepts are brilliant and one feels the role you do is worth making an extra effort for.

Tell us about your film with Ajai Sinha.
It's called STOP. I play a creepy, shady boss who troubles his employees.

By now, you have acted in quite a few films—Company, Janasheen, Dev, Ramji Londonwaley, Corporate. How was it working in big films?
I really enjoyed each one of them. In Dev I shared the screen with Mr Bachchan, Company with Ram Gopal Verma was a great experience too. too. So too. So was Corporate with Madhu Bhandarkar.

Which new films have you got in hand?
I am doing Mithya directed by Fayat Kapoor whose last film was Mixed Doubles in which I played a gangster. Am also doing Marathi films which is quite an experience.

Do you have any dream role?
One where my character is well-etched and not given to me because of some stereotype I conform to. It has to be fulfilling.

Ujjawal Rana
Ujjawal Rana

Ghar Ek Sapna is the talk of the town today. Everyone is curious about who is playing the lead character Samman. This popular serial is directed by Astitva-Ek Prem Kahani fame Ajai Sinha. Viewers of recently launched Sahara One Television new soap Ghar Ek Sapna will identify him as Ujjawal Rana, the young handsome actor from Delhi. Few would know that before this actor found fame, he got recognition in Ravi Rai's popular serial Aaj Bhi Ateet in 2001. It was Ujjawal Rana's debut serial. Born in Tehri Garhwal (Uttaranchal) Ujjawal Rana has been a regular face on Television. Currently this young actor is enjoying his stint on small screen with a bang. If he has been seen in Aaj Bhi Ateet, Kahin To Milenge and Kabhi Sautan Kabhi Saheli, he has also been seen as Samman in Ghar Ek Sapna. About Samman, Ujjawal said, "It is a very interesting role which offers a lot of scope for performance and on television you see a lot of these characters. I had love to play one someday". Ujjawal Rana says he is glad that his character in Ghar Ek Sapna is being appreciated. "For an actor there is nothing more than appreciation. I am happy that the show Ghar Ek Sapna is being watched and most importantly my character is being noticed", said Ujjawal. Talking about Ghar Ek Sapna, Ujjawaj said, "this serial is very close to me. I can easily say this is not like the usual soaps of today. It is for the modern generation with glossy look. One can explore each character to the hilt." Ujjawal further told that, "Today television is so big that as an actor you are satisfied. I have always enjoyed working on television simply because it makes you a household name. A lot of people are watching your show and they shower you with all the love". Commenting upon his journey Ujjawal said, "An actor is raw material mouldable in other's hand. I have continued to grow as an actor and Ghar Ek Sapna is a good start in a way. I am very excited about shouldering the entire responsibility as a lead star. So, it is a challenging responsibility." At the end of the day an actor is only a cog in the wheel. But experience helps. I have done three soaps. This is meager output. Now I have learnt a lot." On his co-stars, Ujjawal said, "Everyone else in the team is so committed to 'Ghar Ek Sapna". This is the only way to make a good serial.

"I am happy concentrating on 'Ghar Ek Sapna" now I am on five days a week. I will proceed to doing something even more good, Ujjawal

A kisstory!

Engrossed in a romantic scene, a cameraman of Ghar Ek Sapna forgets to monitor the camera, which goes off track and is damaged

The scene that caused the mini uproar: Ujjwal Rana and Sayantani aka Kakul
A kissing scene cost the production house of Ghar Ek Sapna, a loss of Rs 1 lakh. It so happened that the cameraman got distracted reeling the sequence and forgot to monitor the camera, which fell off the track and was damaged.

According to director Ajai Sinha, "We were shooting on a terrace at around 3 am. It was a romantic sequence between Ujjwal Rana and Sayantani aka Kakul with firecrackers bursting in the background. There was a problem managing the sequence because during the intense moments the crackers were supposed to light up the whole scene. So, we installed two cameras — one electronically-operated and another from a fixed block. One person monitored the electronically-operated camera for the scene. But, the scene proved to be a curse. The person monitoring the camera was so immersed in the actors getting cosy that he forgot to keep an eye on the camera. The camera went off track and fell off the terrace. The camera got damaged in the process, costing us more than one lakh rupees."

* I think the person monitoring the camera got aroused on seeing Ujjwal trying to kiss Sayantani in the scene — Ajai Sinha

So, did he get sacked? "I think the person monitoring the camera got aroused on seeing Ujjwal trying to kiss Sayantani in the scene. I got miffed initially and wanted to slap the guy right away. But the other unit members intervened and stopped me. On second thoughts, I realised that even he is a human being and can err. But, the damage had already been done," he added.

Is the small screen being inundated by too many romantic-cum-erotic scenes? "Yes, that's true. But, this is the need of the script and today's viewers too. But after this incident, I will have to be careful," he laughed.

The actress in question, Sayantani Ghosh aka Kakul, said, "I know our director got peeved by the incident. The scene was quite beautifully shot and I think the guy just got carried away."

Actress Sayantani Ghosh aka Kakul of Ghar Ek Sapna is very excited after gifting herself a new car recently.

But I desperately needed my own car. I was also wondering which car to buy and I ultimately settled for a small car in a congested city like Mumbai. I initially wanted to buy a big car; but I am staying alone in Mumbai and it makes no sense if I get a big car."

Sayantani also went to her neighbourhood temple to perform a puja for her car. "I wanted to go to Siddhivinayak; but did not have enough time as I am busy shooting. So, I went to the nearby temple instead," she adds.

So, who was the lucky person to accompany her on her first drive? Sayantani says, "Unfortunately, I am single and have nobody to accompany me on the drive. I had to be happy with myself only."

The actress is a music buff has installed a hi-tech music system in the car. "As I am the one who will be driving, I need music that will take my mind off the traffic," she says.

Slow local...

A still from Ghar Ek Sapna
Besides being forced to stay in a spooky palace, the cast and crew of Ghar Ek Sapna are going through a tough time shooting in Pipla, Gujarat. When contacted, director Ajai Sinha said, "While going to Pipla, we took around 150 junior artistes to shoot the wedding sequence. But, while shooting the sequence, we realised that we were falling short of people. So, we decided to hire locals. But then the junior artistes created a big ruckus and shooting came to a standstill. Finally, we had to call more people from Mumbai, which cost both our time and money."

Ajay added, "The locals assured us of big generators for the shoot. So, we did not take the pain of taking generators from Mumbai. But, while shooting, we realised that the generators were not working."

The production house also had trouble with fire crackers required for the scene. Ajay said, "We had ordered crackers worth Rs 2 lakh from Ahmedabad that just wouldn't burn. We were compelled to order more crackers from Mumbai, which cost us a few more lakhs."
