He was leaving, to go abroad for further studies. Her childhood friend that he was, also the love of her life. She could never confess, but always wanted to for many many many years. The night before his departure, she saw a facebook post that said "If you want to say something, say it". She knew he would return after 10 years. She took a sip of her juice and walked towards him confidently. He was with his family and hugging them. She took him towards the Christmas tree the airport had set up for Christmas and under the sparkling lights, she confessed.
He was shocked, he had never seen her as anything besides his bestfriend. He took her hands in his and told her "Let's meet again, not 10 years later, could be earlier or later" "If it's meant to be, it's meant to be". He left her hands and walked towards his gate and took her heart with him.
Her heart broke that fateful day. But nonetheless, she looked forward to the day she would meet him again. She kept in contact with him, as a friend..only a friend. She saw how he became a boyfriend for different girls.
Slowly he lost contact with her. As desperately as she tried to keep it, she eventually couldn't. She could never date anyone, every time she felt guilty for an unknown reason. Her family tried to get her married but she refused.
In the meantime she worked on her career and what a career it became. She got offered a 6figure job that required traveling and took it.
8 years had passed since that fateful day, when she met him again.
She had an overlay flight that was delayed. Since she always travelled days in advance before her international meetings to explore the cities, she offered the airline her seat as she decided to travel the country that her 1st flight of the trip had settled. As she explored she realized it was the same one her love of her life had settled in according to his family. She hoped to see him again but quickly lost hope. She decided to go back to her hotel and leave hours early for her flight to her destination.
In the parking lot, just as she was about to leave the hotel, she saw him.
"Hey" he said
"Hey, long time no see" she replied, hope blossoming in her heart as she thought if this was the moment that she was waiting all this time.
" Haha yeah, I'm actually going inside, the party lounge. Come I want you to meet someone" He said excitedly, suddenly realizing how he missed his best friend from his hometown. Oh how he missed that place"
As he took her with him inside, her insides slowly started sinking. She passed a board that said "celebrating a wedding anniversary"
He took her to a woman in a beautiful red saree who looked like a foreigner
"Hey love, meet this girl. She's my bestfriend all the way from my hometown"
"And you, come meet her, the love of my life, my wife"
In an instant, everything in her broke.
She waited for years and here he was, celebrating his wedding of many years already.
She smiled with pain in her heart and quickly excused herself.
She went to the bar and ordered a drink before realizing she couldn't be drunk on her flight.
Somberly she sat slumped, watching him and her in jealousy, wishing it was her next to him instead of her.
She suddenly heard someone sit next to her.
"This party sucks" she heard saying from the stranger. He continued. "I want to get drunk but my sister has begged me to stop drinking my sadness away so I won't. Everyone in this party knows me except you so listen to my sad lovestory"
He continued, she wondered if she could sneak away.
"She", he said pointing to her nemesis "said to me she was engaged to him" he said pointing this time to the love of her life, "the day I was going to propose".
"She said it was arranged but her brother apologized to me for her cheating on me"
"We were together for years...and she was cheating"
She sat up and listened to what he had to say more. She suddenly saw the time and said the would love to listen but she had to leave for her flight. She couldn't stay any longer. He asked her, her destination and decided to go with her.
She was shocked but decided to just go with it, already planning on losing him after landing.
Except she didn't, as she waited for her luggage he came upto her and said that he wanted to explore the city. She said she wasn't familiar with the city and he offered to get lost with her. She agreed.
"Yknow, we don't know each others names" he said absently mindedly

They quickly found a bar and got drunk. The next morning, they woke up married.
