CHAPTER 23

NEXT DAY, 06:30a.m.

Savitri Devi was having her bed tea and reflecting on what all happened after Ram and Priya told Savitri Devi, Ranjit, Maan and Yash the mystery about Geetanjali and Kavyanjali. Maan had at once said, “Ram Uncle and Priya Aunty, I want to re-marry My Mishty as soon as possible.”

“Beta........”

“Maan, tumhei iss baare mein theek se soch-vichaar karna padhega aur dheere-dheere Geet se shaadi ki baat karni hogi. Kyunki dono Geetanjali aur Kavyanjali bahut dukh, dard aur jismaani taqleefon se guzareen hain.” (Maan, please be patient and lets discuss how to break the news to Geetanjali. We will have to make her slowly and steadily aware of the truth. Because both Geetanjali and Kavyanjali have been through lot of grief, mental as well as physical pain.)

“Dadimaa, mai pichle teihra (13) saalon se apne pyaar jo meri patni bhi hai uske bina raha hoon magar abb aur nahi.” (Dadimaa, for past 13 years I have been staying away from my love who also happens to be my wife, but not any longer.) Maan said aggressively.

“Maan try to understand that in your hurry, impatience and aggressiveness you may again loose your wife.” Ranjit tried to reason with Maan.

“Beta, hum aapko shaadi karne se kab manna kar rahe hain? Hum bass itna keh rahe hain ki aap thoda intezar kijiye kyunki Geetanjali ko naa toh abhi apni asliyat maloom hai aur naa aap dono ke rishte ki asliyat maloom hai. Aap bhool rahe hain ki yeh bahut “sensitive” matter hai aur dhyaanpoorvak isse dekhna padhega.” (Son, I’m not holding you back from re-marrying Geet. I’m just requesting you to be patient for sometime because Geetanjali still not aware of her true identity as well as she is not even aware of your and her relationship. You are also forgetting that this is a very “sensitive” matter and needs to be handled with care.)

“Haan beta mai bhi Mausiji ki baat se agree karta hoon.” (Yes Maan even I agree with your grandmother.) Ram also supported Savitri Devi. “Maan Beta tum aur Yash, dheere-dheere Guddo aur Annie ko aapass ki baatein yaad dilao. Phir unse dosti karo aur phir shaadi ki baat karo.” (Maan, you and Yash, slowly and patiently first try and remind Guddo and Annie of your private and personal memories & things. Then develop friendship with them and at last propose to them.) Ram advised. “Hospital se discharge hone ke baad, Priya aur mai Geet ko uski sacchai aur tum dono ke rishte ki sacchai ke baare mein battayenge. Annie abhi sach jaane aur samajhne ke liye ready nahi hai iss liye Yash tumhei uske bahut patient hona padhega.” (Once I get discharged, Priya and I will talk to Geet about her true identity as well as inform her of your and her true relationship. Unfortunately, Annie is still not emotionally strong to understand the whole truth, therefore Yash you will have to be even more patient.) Ram said looking at Yash. And Yash nodded in understanding. Ram then continued talking, “Yash beta, iss se pehle ki tum Annie ko propose karo apne parents se baat karke unki permission zarur lena. Kyunki Annie ek badi responsibility hai poori family ke liye. Uske baad Geet ka approval lena. Maan aur Yash, ek baat humesha yaad rakhna ki Geet aur Annie ka rishta do beihano ka nahi magar ek “Maa-beti” ka hai. Kyunki barah saal ki umar se (12 yrs of age) Geet, Annie ki “Maa” ki tehre care kar rahi hai. Lakshmi aur bhabhi tabh apna business expand kar rahe the toh aksar bahut busy rehte the. Iss liye kabhi bhi Geet ke saamne Annie ko naa toh tum dono datna aur naa hi usse unchi awaaz mein baat matt karna aur yahi baat Annie ke saamne bhi dhyaan rakhna. Geet aur Annie ek dusare ke liye bahut possessive aur protective hain. Woh ek dusare par apna “haq” samajhteen hain.” (Yash, before you propose to Annie please talk to your parents and take their permission for your marriage. Because looking after Annie is not only a big responsibility for you but also the responsibility for the whole family. After that you must take Geet’s permission. Maan and Yash, always remember one thing that Geet and Annie’s relationship is not that of two sisters but its a “mother-daughter” relationship. Since Geet was 12years old she has been looking after Annie like a ‘mother’. Lakshmi and his wife were very busy those days in expanding their respective businesses. Maan and Yash, also be very careful never to argue, scold or raise your voice on Geet in front of Annie and same with Annie in front of Geet. Geet and Annie are extremely possessive and protective about each other. They consider they have full right on each other.)

“Uncle, mujhe nahi maloom that ki Geet possessive bhi ho sakti hai!” (Uncle I never knew that Geet can ever be possessive?)

“Maan, Geet bahut possessive. Magar usse ek person se bahut close hona chahiye apni possessiveness dekhane ke liye. Annie ke siwaiye woh sirf Lakshmi ke liye possessive thi. Geet bachpan se Lakshmi ke bahut close thi aur Lakshmi bhi Geet ko ek “bete” ki tehre dekhta. Lakshmi humesha Geet ko apni business aur ghar ki responsibility deta thaa bhabhi ko nahi. Iss liye Geet samay se pehle mature aur responsible ho gayi magar Annie humesha se ek bacchi banni rahi i.e. innocent, naive, impulsive and child like. Iss liye Yash tumhei apne parents se zarur baat karni chahiye Annie se shaadi ki baat karne se pehle. Kyunki agar Annie apni shaadi mein khush nahi hui toh uska asar Maan aur Geet ki shaadi par bhi padhega.” (Maan, Geet is very possessive. But she has to be very close to a person to show her possessiveness. The only other person she was possessive for besides Annie was her father, Lakshmi. Since childhood Lakshmi and Geet had a special bond. Lakshmi brought up Geet like a “son” of the family not a daughter. He would give Geet more responsibility than even his wife, resulting in Geet becoming more mature and responsible than her age. Whereas Annie remained like a little child i.e. innocent, naive, impulsive and child like. Hence Yash, you must talk to your parents before you propose marriage to Annie. Because if Annie is not happy in her marriage, it will also effect Maan and Geet’s marital life.)

Today was Friday and next two days were Anjali (Geet)’s days off. Anjali (Geet) was sitting in her car and Sitaramji was driving leaving her thoughts free to wander. Anjali (Geet) was now feeling apprehensive to go back to work as she is unable to keep her animosity for Dr. Maan Singh Khurana under check when he is around but with her parents around she will have to be extra polite to him. Also she can’t ignore that Maan Singh Khurana as he is her Papa’s attending physician. Also Dr. Maan Singh Khurana is h.............Maybe she is wrong in judging Dr. Maan Singh Khurana as she has been in judging Yash Khanna. She can see how soon Yash and Annie became friends. Yash and Annie got along like house on fire from the first day they met. Anjali (Geet) can see in Yash’s eyes true and unconditional love for Annie but Geet also sees apprehension and fear in Pitamber and Vaidehi Khanna’s eyes. Yash does anything and everything for Annie whereas Yash is the only person after Kavyanjali whom Annie listens to. She would love to see Annie married and settled down and lead a normal life but looking after Annie is not an easy job and may strain relations between Annie’s husband and her in-laws.

Anjali (Geet) reached hospital and the first person she saw was none other than Dr. Maan Singh Khurana. She tried to avoid meeting him face to face but was unable to as he personally called her, “Dr. Mishra, Chairperson, Mrs. Savitri Devi would like to meet you in her cabin.”

“Yes Sir.” Anjali said and walked towards her room to keep her belongings. Fifteen minutes later, Anjali knocked on the door of Chairman’s office and entered when she was given permission. When Anjali entered the cabin she saw that along with Savitri Devi there was RK sir, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Vijayalakshmi. After wishing everyone present she sat down at seat indicated by Savitri Devi.

“Dr. Mishra, Khurana Hospitals is very disappointed at your leaving and would request you to reconsider your decision.”

“Ma’am, I really would not like to cause stress in already stressful hospital atmosphere. Therefore, it better if I resigned and........” Anjali said firmly but politely.

Seeing that this may take time, Savitri Devi said, “Can I please talk in privacy to Dr. Mishra?” Getting the hint RK, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Vijayalakshmi immediately left the room. “Anjali beta, hum jaante hain ki aap naukari Maan ke kaaran chodh raheen hain. Magar beta aapko naukari chodhne ki zarurat nahi. Aap Maan se dur rehna chahti hain toh kyun naa aap Khurana Hospital jo Gurugram mein hai usse join kar lijiye.” (Anjali, I know you are resigning from your job as you don’t want to stay in same vicinity as Maan. But my dear you don’t have to leave your job for that. If you want to be away from Maan you can join Khurana Hospitals’ Gurugram branch.)

“Gurugram?”

“Haan Gurugram. Dr. Kamini Chadda ne apna kal resignation diya hai kyunki unhein US mein naukari mil gayi hai.” (Yes Gurugram. Dr. Kamini Chadda has handed over resignation yesterday as she has got a job in US.) Seeing Anjali (Geet) in deep thought said, “Anjali beta, aap ek zaruri baat bhul rahi hain ki aapke Papa theek nahi hain aur unhein do - teen mahine rest karna hoga iss liye woh abhi wapis US nahi jaa sakte.” (Anjali, you are forgetting one thing that your father is unwell and requires to stay in Delhi for two - three months and rest before he can take a long flight to US.)

“Theek hai Dadimaa, hummein kuch samay dijiye hum Monday ko aapko apna decision batta deinge.” (Alright Dadimaa, please give me sometime to consider you offer, I tell you my decision on Monday.)

“Theek hai beta.” (Alright my dear.)

“Ek aur request hai Ma’am.” (One request Ma’am.)

“Kya?” (Yes.)

“Kya aaj hum ghar lunchtime mein jaa saktein hain kyunki aaj humari koi surgery scheduled nahi hai.” (Can I go home after lunch time as I have no planned surgeries for today afternoon.)

“Haan beta aap lunchtime ke baad aap off le sakteen hain.” (Yes my dear you can take off after lunchtime.)

Although she was given permission to leave after lunch but there came three emergency cases back to back. Therefore she was stuck in labour room until 6:00p.m. Anjali freshened up and went to meet Ram where she saw Yash and Annie. She spent sometime with four of them and even laughed at Yash’s jokes.

She has started liking Yash as in his presence Annie relaxes and is full of life.

Anjali was about to leave when Maan walked in his business suit ready to leave for home. Maan first enquired from Ram, “Uncle, aap kaise hain? Abb toh aapko beichaini nahi ho rahi?” (How are you Uncle? Any discomfort or restlessness?)

“Nahi beta. I’m feeling much better. Agar tum na hote........” (No son. I’m feeling much better. If you weren’t..............)

“Toh koi aur doctor hota.” (Then some other doctor would have been there.) Looking at Priya Maan said, “Aunty, aap please dekhiyega ki Uncle halka aur kam tala khaana khaayen.” (Aunty, can you please see that Uncle eats light and non greasy and non-fried food at home?)

“Maan beta, yeh tumne bilkul theek keh rahe ho. Inko sirf ghee aur tel ka khaana pasand hai aur uppar se yeh exercise bhi nahi karte. Tum hi kuch samjhao.” (Maan, you are absolutely right. He loves food swimming in ghee and oily food and refuses to exercise. Please drill some sense in him.)

“Uncle agar aap G.....apni dono ladkiyon ki shaadi dekhna chahte hain toh aapko apna dhyaan rakhna hoga.” (Uncle, if you want to see G......your both daughters’ wedding you have to take care of your health.) Looking at Yash Maan said, “Yash, can you please drop me home?”

“Sorry bhai I have to leave for a meeting. But don’t worry I’ll call.......”

“Yash beta, tum chinta matt karo. Guddo Maan tumko Khurana Mansion tak chodh degi. Kyun Guddo?” (Yash, don’t worry, Guddo will drop you, Maan until Khurana Mansion. Alright Guddo.)

“Mai?” (Me?) Anjali (Geet) squeaked.

“Haan tum.” (Yes you.)

“Theek hai. Chalo Annie.” (Come Annie. Let’s leave)

“Annie abhi toh aayi hai iss liye woh kuch der yahaan aur rahegi. Tum aur Maan abhi nikalo warna aur traffic mein phans jaaoge.” (Annie has just arrived, let her stay for some more time. You and Maan should leave now before you get stuck in traffic jam.) Ram said.

Leaving no alternative, Anjali pressed her lips in annoyance and left with Maan.

Whereas Ram and Priya looked on smiling

and Yash gave Maan a wink on the sly.
