Chapter 4
"Sasha, make the necessary changes and email it tome. I want to check it before I send it over to Mr Chopra" Maan said as hemoved towards the elevator, his eyes focused on his phone.
"Okay MK, I'll be working from home for the rest ofthe evening" she informed following him into the elevator.
He didn't respond, instead pressed the lift button andfocused his eyes back to his phone screen. Sasha slowly stepped out of theelevator as she thought of how to strike a conversation with Maan.
Sasha followed him with her eyes as he shoved his phoneinto his pocket and moved towards his car, she paused near her car watching thefluid firm movements, his head held high and there was an air of pride as hemoved. She smiled and slipped into car and drove away, she did also steal aglance over her shoulder as she'd passed by Maan's car.
"Nakul, dadima kahan hai?" Maan questionedhanding his coat to his staff.
"Saab woh dadima Naintara bhabhi ko lekar bahar gayehai, Dev saab bhi gaye hain. Unhoune kahan ke woh teen, chaar din ke liyestation se bahar reh rahe hain" he answered.
"Kahan gaye?" he inquired.
"Agra" he responded.
Maan nodded figuring dadima must be visiting relatives.
"Khana laga doon?" Nakul inquired.
"Abhi nahi, main shower karke khana khaunga"Maan answered and headed upstairs, he slowly opened the door knowing Geetusually sleeps by 10pm. He'd found many times having dozed off with a book toher chest. However he was surprised when he entered, she wasn't here. Nakul hadn't said that she had gone withdadima, maybe he forgot Maan thought.
"Maan saab" Nakul knocked endlessly on the doorpanicking, Maan grew tense wondering what the heck was going on. He'd pulledopen the door uncaring that he was only in a towel.
"Kya hua, Nakul? Chilla kyun rahe ho?" heasked.
"Woh saab..." Nakul handed the phone to Maanunable to form words.
"Maan, Geet aapke saat hai?" dadima asked notbothering with even a hello.
"No, I thought she'd gone with you" he replied.
"Nahi Maan, she told me she was going to be homearound 9pm but Nakul told me she hasn't come. I called her phone, but she isn'tpicking up" Dadima stressed concerned.
"Dadima, stop worrying. I'll find out where she is,she's probably okay" he tried to calm her down cursing Geet. "She'sprobably gone to eat something following the movie".
"Nahi Maan, Geet doesn't eat outside much. She wouldhave called me and told if she was running late. Bete I'm getting worried"she cursed herself wishing she hadn't even come to Agra. She had left in thehopes of Maan and Geet spending some time together especially with Geet havinga holiday break after today.
Maan sighed heavily wondering where the stupid girl wouldhave disappeared. He calmed Dadima assuring her he would go look for Geethimself and call once they're home. He then called his driver to be ready thendressed quickly to go searching for her. He did not evenhave her number, so how was he going to even start looking for her. Why had shesaid she was coming home at 9pm? He drove past her college which was now lockedup, he drove down the local roads and went to the nearby shopping mall andcinemas to see if she was around.
Maan dialled the house phone and waited.
"Nakul" he said as soon as it was answered,"who drove Geet to college this morning?" he asked.
"Saab, Geet madam tho gari use nahi karte. Woh madamtho kabhi kabhi chal ke jaate hain ya phir bus".
Maan cut the call angrily and drove past the local busstops.
How clever are you? You're coming late today, but you're using a bus or walking? Dadima kahan mujhephasa diya Maan thought as his eyes wandered. Kahan ho Geet...
Maan had been driving around for the last hour now, andhe could not see her at all. He'd already made a call to his men to help searchfor Geet and they had no updates for him either. He was now getting tensed, hesquirmed uneasily as he thought of something happening to her, dadima wassurely going to skin him alive if he returned home without her being safe andsound.
He revved the engine straightening up in determinationand looked around with an urgency, he passed by narrow roads and streets. He'd drivenaway from the local roads stopped by side street eateries asking if they'd seenGeet. He didn't have a picture of her so he'd described her to the best ofabilities but it was a general description of many of their customers.
Maan's phone started ringing, he answered it hoping itwas someone with news of Geet. It was Nakul.
"Haan, Nakul bolo".
"Saab madam ghar aagaye hain. Sandeep madam ko payatha".
"I told him to call me if he finds Geet" Maan snapped,"Why didn't he call me?"
"Geet madam told him not to call" Nakul respondedgently and shot a look at Sandeep who'd glared back.
"I'm coming" Maan cut the call harshly anddrove home.
"Tum gaye aaj" Nakul said.
"Madam ne mana kiya" Sandeep responded.
"Phir bhi... Maan saab aaj bohot gussa hai" heinformed.
"Pata hain" Sandeep groaned and closed his eyeshearing the screeching tyres of his boss's car and the slamming vibration ofthe car door.
"What were you thinking?" Maan stopped in frontof Sandeep and shouted angrily. "Didn't I tell you to tell me if you findher?"
"Sir, Geet madam was upset and she cried saying she didn'twant me to call" Sandeep replied dipping his head down.
"Crying... why was she crying?"
"She didn't say anything, I found her walking by theside roads near that small temple in Mehra's tea/coffee shop" Sandeepmumbled, he didn't know how to explain what he'd seen on Geet. So he keptquiet.
"What was she doing there?" Maan quizzed moreto himself, he nodded and headed upstairs. He entered his room to find Geet saton the edge of the bed hugging her knees.
Maan closed the door harshly behind him snapping Geet outof her thoughts.
"If you want to go out spending the night away, letsomeone know. Dadima is over there concerned, you know she shouldn't bestressing" he raised his voice. "Why weren't you answering yourphone?"
"I don't have to answer to you" Geet repliedsquaring her shoulders, she moved to pass him and go to the washroom when heyanked her arm and pulled her.
"You're living in my house, Geet! You're living onmy money, you answer to me" words that he didn't mean were spilling.
Geet pushed away his hands stepping back, the moonlightfrom outside illuminated over her face and it was only then Maan noted a cut toher lip and a bruise on her cheek.
"Geet, who... who did that?" he stepped forward.
"Like I said, I don't answer to you" sheshuddered stepping back, tears sprung in her eyes and threatened to spill. She dippedher eyes down clenching her fist and pushed past him hiding in the washroom.
Maan hurried back downstairs and yelled out for Sandeep.
"Did you see anything?" he approached him likea lion stalking towards his prey.
"Nahi saab" Sandeep shook his head. "She didn'ttell me anything, she was just crying and telling me to bring her home".
"Go back and speak to Mehra, see if he had seenanything" Maan ordered, Sandeep agreed and headed out of the house quicklydriving off.
Maan paced the hall, he felt guilty for having shouted ather and he was stressing now as to what had happened. Each scenario thatentered his mind was just worse from each other, he groaned in frustration andhe knew that she wasn't going to speak to him now. He remembered dadima wasprobably going to be stressing so he called her and updated her saying Geet washome. He did not mention anything further.
"Where had she gone?" dadima asked. "Andwhy wasn't she answering her phone?"
"Dadima woh..." he cleared his throat and wassurprised when his phone was taken off him, he turned to see Geet now showeredand changed. Her cheek red from the bruise and her lip now had a small cut, thedried blood was now gone.
"Dadima, hum teek hai" Geet moved away, "Aapstress mat kijiye".
"Kaise nahi kare Geet?" Dadima sighed. "Icalled your phone, Naintara tried as well".
"Sorry dadima, I lost my phone on the way home"she murmured and continued to reassure dadima, then told her to sleep as it waspretty late. Once she'd cut the call, she held out the phone for Maan to take.
Maan took the phone silently and watched as she turned toleave, he held onto her wrist gently. "Geet, listen I..."
"I don't want your sorry, I don't wantanything" she turned to face him, her eyes focused and pooling withdetermination and strong will.
Maan eyes drifted to her bruised cheek and the corner ofher lip, his eyes then drifted back to her eyes.
"I'm okay" Geet said gently.
Maan figured she wasn't ready to speak, he knew all toowell if someone was determined in not sharing then nothing was going to breakthat person. If she wasn't going to tell him, then he'd just have to find outfor himself and make whichever bas***d pay the price. He nodded.
"Have you eaten?" he asked instead.
Geet shook her head.
"Nakul, set the food" Maan called out to hisloyal staff who'd answered quickly saying the dining room is ready.
"Chalo" he gestured.
Geet followed and sat down, it was probably the first timethat they had sat together to eat. Since their drive from Hoshiarpur, she hadnot once sat with him. He was away from the house until late at night when he'dreturn to just sleep.
They ate silently, he'd stolen a few glances at her wonderingquietly.
Geet had excused herself having finished, she washed herplate and headed upstairs to sleep, she wanted to just curl into the bed andforget everything. She was not going to speak a word of it to anyone especiallynot Maan. Tears burned in her eyes as she recalled his harsh words of her beinganswerable to him, in a way he was right.
She was living off him, he'd provided for her, he'spretty much paying for everything and what was she doing to contribute to thehousehold? She only manages to wash her own dinner plate after glaring at Nakulwho tries stopping her saying it was his job. She heard the sound of the dooropening and the shuffle of him moving around the room then going to thewashroom. After a couple of minutes, he returns and the bed dips with hisweight. She tensed feeling him shifting and moving the cushions, she feels thecushions being placed between them and could him hear him turning onto hisside.
"I won't judge if you decide to ever tell me" Maansaid as he stared off blankly at the closed door of his room, his back to her.Sandeep had returned and could not provide anything as no one had seen anythingnor had she spoken to anyone.
"Things are shared with people who are close to you,not strangers" Geet said after a while.
Maan didn't say anything after that, he simply closed hiseyes.
