Chapter 10
"You've been listening to my conversation haven't you?" Geet turned her head to Carter once she saw Lewis out of her office.
"You're calling that a conversation?" Carter arched his brows watching as she walked over to his desk. "What you call a conversation, I call a right ass-kicking" he chuckled. "Lewis deserved it though, seriously how does someone f**k up on a housing trial" he laughed.
"So you're saying you'd do better?" Geet challenged.
"You know I will" he winked.
"Funny, if that was right shouldn't you be a lawyer instead of a Legal Administrator, not to forget my own secretary"
"I use the term personal assistant" he corrected. "I don't mind being your personal something though" he winked.
"You got a thing for older women?" she teased.
"Not for just any old woman, only you. You're my exception" he responded cheekily.
"Carter" Geet said his name.
"Yes Geet?"
"Work" she pointed shaking her head and returned to her office.
###
"What are you working on that's keeping you so engrossed?" Mahi queried peeping over Kabir's shoulder. Kabir closed the file looking up at her, Mahi caught the name despite him closing the file.
"It's been 5 years" she whispered taking a seat on the other chair.
"I know" Kabir nodded. "But I need to do this, Sanam hasn't forgiven me and I can never forgive myself"
"But Kabir..."
"Mahi she deserves to know who killed Ayush" he explained quietly.
"Don't dig yourself into a grave like last time" she murmured standing up as the others returned to the room, Kabir didn't speak instead he placed the file into his drawer and locked it up making a mental note to take it home and study it.
"I hate housing court" Sanaya complained.
"What happened?" Carol questioned.
"Actually not housing, I hate my client. He was drunk and smelled of weed. Obviously I lost it with him attending court in that state" she shook her head scrunching her nose in disgust. "Judge Wesley was looking at me angrily, like as if I brought the client on purposely like that. Gosh he could have at least showered or something before coming to court"
"He lost, and has to be out of the property. Not only that, he's got the court costs to cover as well"
"How does someone lose housing?" Zaid queried having caught only half of the conversation.
"No one is Mr Perfect like you" Sanaya mocked. "I bet if I went back to your records, you must have lost something"
"I didn't lose any housing" Zaid responded proudly. "Housing was too easy for me, Commercial I've lost now and then because some idiots didn't want to settle despite knowing they were in the wrong"
"So you're not Mr Perfect either" Sanaya replied.
"Zaid is far from Mr Perfect, whilst we were both in Harvard, in the mock trials I kicked his ass" Mahi responded.
"Oh really?" Zaid arched his brows.
"Louis McGregory case?" she reminded.
"That case was our first case, after that I killed you in trial" Zaid laughed remembering now.
"And I am glad to say I didn't lose any, mock or real" Jay responded.
"You've never lost a housing case?" Sanaya raised her brows.
"Nope, that's why it's my area of law" Jay winked.
"You mustve flirted your way in court as well" Sanaya rolled her eyes.
"Jealous?"
"Puhlease. I've got million better things to be jealous of you than some petty flirting" she countered.
"Sure you..."
"Alright before you both start arguing" Mahi cut in just before Jay could continue further. "Can we order some lunch? Then we'll eat together" she suggested.
###
"Your cousin's just walked in, did you know?" Mahi pointed looking at Sanaya whilst they all gathered together eating their lunch.
Sanaya glanced over her shoulder curiously. "She's not here for fun or anything, she's here on business" she informed turning away and continuing to eat her lunch.
"How do you know?" Jay queried.
"She's got her business face on; see the smirk and the cunning face expression. That's how" she chuckled pointing it out.
"What business does she have here? She's a Assistant District Attorney, what's she doing though? We're all defense attorneys; she does know that doesn't she?" Jay inquired.
"She's a D.A. Obviously she knows the difference weirdo" Sanaya rolled her eyes. "And how am I supposed to know why she's here, I've just seen her myself"
"She is your cousin..." Mahi trailed off.
"Yeah and she's D.A before that. Don't think she wants her licence removed by discussing her professional life with me, plus one whiff of Geet speaking to anyone about the state's issues, she'd be reported to the BAR" Sanaya reminded.
"That's true that" Mahi agreed nodding.
"Shaw" Maan stared in surprise as he stepped out of Jonathan's office. "What are you doing here?"
"Nothing to do with you, I'm here to speak to Jonathan, so excuse me" she moved aside however Maan stepped in front of her.
"Shaw I'm partner, in two days' time name Partner as well" he informed.
"You smug son of bitch, you lied about this being a temporary visit" she smirked seemingly unaffected.
Maan chuckled. "Glad you caught on love"
"Anyways I'm not here to see you, I've got a meeting with Jonathan"
"Who is managing partner, and I'm his partner so I'll be attending the meeting" he replied.
Geet smiled. "That's where you're mistaken, the meeting is only with Jonathan" she paused smiling widely when Jonathan stepped out of his office. "Jonathan" she walked past Maan and held out her hand. "Ready?"
"Yeah sure, coffee?" he gestured towards the small kitchen.
"I'm fine thanks" Geet responded shaking her head.
"Right, why don't you head into my office? I'll be there shortly" he pointed her towards his office. Maan turned around curiously and slowly moved towards the office, Geet stopped short and turned to face Maan.
"Not you Maan"
"I'm Partner Shaw" he reminded.
"Yeah and I'm here for a meeting with the first partner, not you" she replied sharply.
"Fine, as you wish. It's not as if I won't know" he rolled his eyes wondering why she was making such a big deal out of it.
"That's the thing honey, you still won't know. You're partner now, if you think I wanted the world to know what this meeting was about, I'd have kept it elsewhere" she responded smugly. "And nothing I say in that meeting will come out because I will make sure Jonathan signs a confidentiality agreement and if you want him to lose 3 million dollars you can force it out of him"
Maan clenched his jaw, Geet smiled and entered the office, and Jonathan followed a moment later with hot cup of coffee in his hand.
"So what brings you down here Counsellor?" Jonathan questioned gesturing Geet to a seat and then settled in his chair.
"Before I tell you anything, whatever we discuss stays between us" she placed a sheet in front of him.
"Confidentiality agreement?" he raised his brows curiously.
"Yeah, I know Maan is now a partner, but I don't want him knowing anything about my business" she replied.
"Guess no love is lost between the two of you" Jonathan laughed as he grabbed his pen and signed the document.
"You could say that" Geet responded taking the signed document and placing it into her briefcase.
"So what can I do for you Shaw?"
"I wanted to borrow some of your lawyers for trial period" she informed. "Funding is low, so they don't want to hire anyone and train them up, they want trained ones"
"And how long is this trial period?" he questioned inquisitively.
"A year or so. Plus it'd be really good if your lawyers got some criminal court training and experience, seeing as they're defense" she replied.
"Hmm... There's only a few issues"
"Shoot them out, I'll look into clearing these issues" she responded confidently.
"My team out there aren't going anywhere without each other, they've all grown attached to each other" he pointed with his thumb. "They've worked together for 5 years"
"You're suggesting I take your whole team?" Geet scoffed. "Name the best two, their replacements will be sent here on Monday morning"
"Kabir Singhania, Jay Malik and Zaid Sinha. Zaid and Jay are already legal executive, Kabir is working towards being legal executive, he's always been in criminal court for a few cases in the past"
"Yeah I heard" Geet nodded. "What are their areas?"
"Zaid's is commercial law; he's one of our best lawyers you can find for your business. Jay is housing, Kabir is working on housing, and he's also working on criminal law" Jonathan stated.
"What about the other lawyers?" Geet questioned.
"Sanaya, Carol and Mahi are at the moment housing defense lawyers. They're all licenced"
"Meaning your whole team can work in the D.A's office" Geet muttered to herself. "I'll have to think about it because at the end of the day it isn't my decision, it's the board members" she stood.
"Take your time, I would suggest you take this team because you sure as well would do well. Plus when I get them back with their training in criminal court, it'd do my business well" Jonathan stood escorting her towards the door.
"I'll let you know soon" Geet responded shaking his hand.
Jonathan opened the door letting her out. "I'll see you around, take care. Thanks for coming by"
"You're welcome" Geet replied and turned on her heels to leave whilst Jonathan returned back into his office.
###
"What the hell are you doing back?" Ash looked shocked when Neil walked in.
"I heard everything, so I'm back. I couldn't let that bas***d go free" Neil replied.
"Where's Sandra and Cara?" Ash responded.
"They're still with Julie, I've got a private detail on them, I couldn't leave them unguarded" he explained. "Now bring me up to speed" he pointed. "Ash close your mouth, stop gaping and bring me up to speed" he repeated when he noticed her staring at him silently.
"Um... does Geet know you're back?"
"Don't you f**king tell her anything. She wouldn't waste anytime sticking her heels up my ass" he groaned. "Just don't let her know yet"
"As if she won't find out" Ash smiled. "Anyways I'm relieved you're back, missed you bum"
"Missed you too, bum" he laughed hugging her. "Now c'mon chop, chop. Give me the details"
###
"Have you decided for Charlie Buckley?" Blake popped his head into Geet's office.
"How did you get past Carter?" Geet frowned.
"He's on a break..."
"And I'm back" Carter scowled. "You don't go into Geet's office without letting me know"
"Really Carter? I'm already in her office now, go" he waved. "We're speaking"
"I don't care, you tell me and I announce to Geet before you can go and see her" he reminded.
"Geet?" Blake stared at her.
"Carter's right Blake" Geet smirked continuing to read through her file.
"Stop f**king with me" Blake scowled.
Geet laughed, "Carter it's fine. You head back to your desk, where's Maria anyways?"
"She's off for this week"
Geet nodded. "Next time just tell Carter or Maria" she informed Blake as he entered and took a seat on the chair opposite her.
"I should be given special permission where I don't have to see Carter or Maria just to see you" he replied.
"Keep dreaming, what did you want to know?"
"Who's prosecuting lawyer in Charlie Buckley's case?"
"I'll be having Donna working on the case, I'll just be there attending it with her" Geet replied.
"Mmhmm. Great" Blake nodded. "So I'll get Donna getting the witnesses and the family prepared" he stood. "Anything else?"
"Find out this new evidence that has been brought to light. I don't want anything left out"
"I'll speak to her" he informed and walked out of her office.
