Many questions need to be answered and all the readers can do is being patient as Dr. Geet Handa and Dr. Maan Singh Khurana work their way together for tending to our wounds (inquiries)!

Interesting storyline. Curiosity has been raised and I am honestly eager to know what happens and what has already happened for them to get here. Please bear with the inconsistent comments, but I assure you that I will comment on each and every chapter.

Thank you for deciding to repost this. I'm so glad I get to read one more piece of work from you which will surely be as encapturing as the rest of your stories.

Chapter 2

***

A/N: Prologue is on page 2 and chapter 1 on page 5

***

Geet examined Maan's chart and noted that Dr. Dev had ordered a CT scan and a neurologist consult.

Did Dr. Dev suspect a head injury or a concussion or was the consult just a way to rule out any internal injuries?

Babaji, she wondered.

In all the hospitals on earth, in all the wards there are, did you have to send him to mine?

As unsettling as it was, she was his doctor so she kept spending her time caring for him.

Some injured colleagues of Maan had stopped to check in on him.

From them she had ascertained that he was a rescue unit doctor now.

She wondered why.

It was not a secret about his family. Almost all of them except his mother were doctors.

Why would he have left the easy medical practice of his own hospitals and taken to rushing to each and every horrendous situation there was?

That made her wonder why there had been no word from them. The Khuranas.

She shuddered with the thought of facing her past.

It would be one step at a time now. There was no way to rush past this.

As he lay seemingly peacefully, she couldn't help being aware of him.

Even with closed eyes and no action whatsoever he had a way to crumble her defences.

She had studied about cells and molecules for years but her studies were useless when it came to Maan.

While each brain cell warned to stay away, each molecule in the body longed to curl up beside him and let the heat from his body seep into her cold self.

Attraction was never the problem between them. She buzzed with life whenever he was around, like an animation come to life in his presence.

She looked guiltily at him glad that he could not read her like an open book this time.

It made it easier for her that he remained out of consciousness. It gave her time to build up the barriers that his sudden appearance had caused to crumble.

She was not sure she would have been able to survive it if the eyes she had fallen in love with were open.

***

It was a quiet morning when her life changed.

The night sky was slowly turning from a midnight blue to a silver grey. Streaks of pink and orange were starting to color the sky; as if colors were seeping into an artist's palette with the dawn of a new day.

The sun had not risen yet.

She was already up at dawn and ready for work.

She made her rounds of patients beds with the head nurse, going through each and every chart and double checking that her orders were followed correctly.

Sudden loud noises outside made her realize that there was something unusual happening.

She hurried to the ER where a patient was being brought in.

The noise was not from the silent creature who was huddled and unconscious on the stretcher.

There were a batch of police, men and women and a few stray reporters trying to rush into the ER.

Dr. Dev was valiantly pushing everyone out.

"Security" he yelled and the two lethargic fellows whose job was basically guiding people to the correct floor and having their paan masala came into help him.

They were no match for the large crowd and Dr. Dev shut the door and locked it.

***

Dev wondered what the commotion was for when his eyes fell on the small lady with a swollen black eye.

Dispassionately he started his examination, yelling to the nurse for an IV.

Peeling the tiny girls outfit off which was basically in tatters he yelled for a female doctor and a rape kit.

The girl seemed to be whimpering in pain in an unconscious state and he felt his heart contract painfully.

Even in a relatively quiet city, this was a routine he dreaded. The victim seemed too young to have endured this.
Rubbing his hand through her curls, he softly whispered, "You are safe now. Daro mat". He knew she could not hear him but it was in an odd way something he needed to say.

Sometimes even a doctor does not have all solutions for healing. There was a helplessness in that.

He watched the patient until Geet stepped in with a female police officer and then gave his assessment.
"Fractured ribs. It looks like she has been hit on her legs or she fell from a height. Scars and bruises on her back and hands. Her mouth is split as if something was tied to stop her from speaking. Eyes are swollen shut".

The police woman spoke, "Agar aap bachayege bhi toh bachegi nahi ab wo Doctor. Gang rape victim hai. Sab attackers mein ek ladka gangster Rakha ka bhai Lakha hai. Maine pehle bhi dekha hai inka system sa'ab. Police ke heads aur politicians unki pocket mein haan. Wo log aate hi hoge Sir. Ladki ko chodo apne aap ko bachao".

The utter lack of humanity was more than Dev could take.
"GET OUT!" Dev roared at the police woman, " .. agar apna kaam nahi kar sakti ho toh kam se kam hummein apni duty karne do".

"Ja rahi hu! Chillane ki zaroorat nahi hai. Rakha bullet aankh ke beech marege tab kuch mat bolna. Ye lo ladki ka samaan", the female said and took off dumping the girls purse on the floor.

A student id fell from the girls purse and Dev picked it up and read it.

"Tara D'souza. Delhi University".
Dev pinched his eyes shut as he stepped out of the room as the tests were being conducted by

Geet now. Working the night shift was a neccesity sometimes but he was used to the routine.

As the primary doctor of record would be Geet he had nothing to do with the patient now but he was severely disturbed by the event.

What had the world come to?

The system that supposed to protect was folding and turning its face away.

He wished he could be so callous.
His phone rang at that time taking him away from his thoughts.

"Dev! So are you ready for our getaway to Manali?" the cheerful voice spoke and he replied with a smile, "Yup. All packed and ready to go. I really need this vacation".

Life has a way of coming up with detours and Dev was just going to find that out.
***

The large ugly man strode through the hospital as if he owned it. A bunch of his followers with weapons drawn were following him.

As he passed the police, they looked down at the floor like meek buffalo while people scattered around and hid.

It was common knowledge that this gangster shot first and asked questions later.

"Kaun thi doctor jisne wo ladki ka check up kiya? Isse pehle ke wo police commisioner ko apna report de, usse utha lo. Bohut accha aata hai hummein logo ka mooh bandh karna, hai na? Rape kit ko mita do aur dusri kit rakh do, samjhe na. Lab ki ladki ke saath hisaab kar diya hai. Wo ab kissi ko kuch nahi bolegi. Mere bhai Lakha ke samne jo bhi aaya usse Rakha khatam kar dega, samajh gaye na?" the evil Rakha explained to his goons who spread around the hospital in search of the doctor.

Geet hid in fear from the men with automatic rifles and started stepping back towards the door silently.
Luckily the on duty nurse had warned her that there were armed men looking for the unfortunate girl Tara.

She had already hidden the unconscious victim in the morgue examination room where she was sure no one would go.

She had quickly informed her senior Dr. Dev and he had asked her to lay low. Since her name was on the patient's chart, she was sure the first place they would look for her was the hostel or the doctor's lounge.
Now she needed a place to hide until the gang of hoodlums left.

She stumbled in her fear and her anklet made a tiny sound and one of the goons turned towards her and yelled for the others scaring her.

She quickly ducked down the passage and opened the door behind her and slid in turning the light off.

She recognized the room and patient instantly.

He lay there unconscious as he had been for the past few days.

Her destiny once again had beckoned her to him.

Maan.

There was nowhere in the room to hide but the bed where he slept.

She quickly doffed her medical coat and placed it to the side to hide it.

Silently she slid herself under the sheet and plastered herself to Maan making herself as small as she could so she could hide.

It was as if the clock had turned back in time.

Sensing her warmth, he turned and folded her into him.

The door opened as one of the crooks made their way in to check if she was in.

She held her breath.

Maan's wide shoulders and frame covered her from view and the man left.

She remained where she was.

Despite her fear, her senses were heightened by Maan's touch.

Just this morning her department head had informed her that she had enough saved vacation days to last till her graduation. She could take leave and come back on graduation day.

She lay still wondering where to go next.

There was nowhere to go, no place to hide.

Ironically there had been a job offer from the last place she wanted to work.

Khurana group of hospitals, New Delhi.

Apparently each year they sent a job offer to the top graduate in the medical branch. This year it was her.

She laughed at the irony as she tried to untangle herself from Maan.

His leg lay strong over hers and his iron grip on her was not easy to get out of without causing him pain.

She fought with her instincts to leave.

This is madness Geet, she told herself but the dysfunctional brain refused to send messages to the weak heart.

Like a thief she wanted to steal this moment in time.

Just a second, she promised herself; just one second of weakness.

She lay her head on his heart and listened to the strong heartbeats that once beat only her name.

Geet. Geet. Geet.

The rhythmic beats of the heart soothed her as she listened to them with her eyes closed.

Feelings of utter peace and the exhaustion from the night before hit her and she did not realize when she fell asleep.

***

The bright lights and the loud gasp made her open her eyes with a snap.

The harsh light shone bright on the lady dressed regally in white silk.

The angry frown and the accusing finger were pointed to Geet and she gulped.

"Tum? Kaun ho tum? Kaisi ladki ho tum? Aisse kissi ladke ke saath? Chi chi chi!!"

Geet did not say anything.

Removing Maan's hand slowly from her, she stood up and came to face Mrs. Khurana.

"Are you after my grandson? Ameer ladka dekh ke usse fasane chali thi? Main Savitri devi hu, I am a Khurana. Don't think I was born yesterday girl!" Savitridevi said standing tall and fierce.

"I am Geet Handa, Maan's doctor", she said as she picked up her white coat and wore it.

"Doctor? Ye tumhari hospital main ho kya raha hai? Is this how you behave with a patient? I am a doctor so don't try to fool me girl", Savitri devi flashed angry eyes at her as she spoke.

Geet had finally had enough.

Opening the locket that she wore on her wrist, she handed Daadima the ring Maan had worn on his finger.

"Ye Maan ki ring tumhare paas kaise aayi? Chor ho tum?" Daadima asked clearly annoyed and irritated and taking her frustration out on Geet.

The last thing she had expected when she had finally found Maan was to see him with his arms around this girl.

Was she his doctor? Where was the professionalism here?

She glared at Geet who pointed to the inscription inside the ring and then her name tag.

"Geet".

Savitri devi's face turned cold and angry, "Tumhari ring hai ye? Tumhara rishta kya hai Maan se".

From the slightly open doors Geet saw the batch of hoodlums make their way through the passage again.

Quickly she removed her doctor's coat and used her dupatta to cover her head.

She hated to do this but there was no choice if she wanted to escape Rakha.

She bowed down to Savitri devi, "Main Maan ki mangetar".

PRECAP: It was the last question she had expected of him.

The laser like eyes were focused on her as he asked again, "Maine poocha, kaun ho tum?"

His eyes blurred and he clutched his hair, "Main, main kaun hu?"

A/N: So many of you think this is a sad story. Aissa kyun? It is not.

I love second chances at love; that way I can write the falling in love things twice 😃

Hope you are liking it so far.
