The Princess and The Pauper

Chapter 1

The swishing of the wiper took away the stray drops of rain falling on his windshield.

The silence in the BMW was companiable; a silence between two hearts who were at peace with each other.

As the car ate away the miles slowly on the lonely stretch of highway, the memories came back in tune with the wipers.

Memories with the girl sitting next to him.

Geet.

His first and only love.

They were childhood best friends, always laughing and playing.

Sawaan ke jhoole, Diwali ke phatake, flying kites on the terrace, climbing trees to get mangos, sharing barf ke gole; theirs was a world of fun and mischief.

He took up every dare she offered and she was equally fearless.

They were an unlikely pair.

A princess in a palace and an awestruck boy.

Though she was never a princess with him, as they grew up the divide between rich and poor became apparent the day he fell in love with her.

***

He remembered the day Mohinder Handa had seen the teenage duo.

Geet's father Mohinder was away in far off lands for business more than he was ever home. Though he had an office in Delhi, his days were spent in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan and the far east from where the Handa riches were constantly being replenished.

Geet was raised by an elderly relative since her mother's death, her father not able to bear being in the home where he had lost his wife. Geet reminded him of Rano so he avoided her as much as he could.

Mohinder received daily reports about her from the aunt and that was all the contact he needed. He had drowned himself in his work uncaring for his daughter's needs. Once in a while his conscience twinged him to return home to her.

Known for his riches and business sense, Mohinder Handa had the arrogance of a man who knew his own worth and one who always had people at his beck and call.

Maan had just parked his bike in the driveway when the shiny long Mercedes had rolled in, knocking his bike down.

Geet was coming down the massive front steps and Maan stood at the bottom so mesmerized that he did not notice anything else; not the car, nor the father who was glowering at the ordinary boy staring at his daughter.

It was the first time Geet was wearing an Indian outfit. Usually in dresses, or jeans, his tomboy girl had looked totally different.

Maan's heart clenched at the beautiful sight.

The white anarkali with lace sleeves fit her growing body like a skin. Her long curly hair was styled in a single braid.

Her mouth curved into a smile seeing him.

"Maan! Hi!" her hands swung in a wave causing a frown on Mohinder Handa's face.

This was Maan; the boy who Geet spent most of her time with according to the aunt.

Looking at the t-shirt and jean clad boy, Mohinder deemed him completely unsuitable.

He knew the boy's background; apparently he was being raised by his Daadi, they had a failing business.

No, he would not do for Mohinder's princess!

"Papa! OMG! Aap aa gaye!" she said registering her father's presence and running to him to hug him.

Maan watched her face bloom at the small pat her father gave on her head with happiness. He knew how much Geet craved for the attention of her father.

"Papa, ye Maan hai. Mera best friend", Geet dimpled a smile and introduced him.

In one glance Mohinder Handa had been able to discern the feelings that had bloomed in Maan's heart.

With just as much callousness as he could he broke the boy's heart.

Turning himself away from Maan's outstretched hand, he turned towards the palace.

"Princess! Chalo aaj Papa ke saath time spend karo" he said pulling Geet away.

"Par Papa, Maan wait kar raha hai, hum mele mein ja rahe hai ..", Geet complained.

Her complaint was brushed off, "Wo koi important nahi hai. Chalo. Aisse awara lafange ke saath time spend karna tumhare jaise ghar ki ladki ko shobha nahi deta hai".

"Maan awara lafanga nahi hai Papa", she defended hotly even as Maan's face fell from the insult.

<img src="http://media1-starag.startv.in/r1/thumbs/PCTV/75/1000007175/PCTV-1000007175-hsm.jpg" alt="" />

"Kya hai uske paas? Pehle kuch ban ke dikhaye phir tumhare saath baat karne ke kaabil samjhuga usse. Dhang se do paise kamaye phir yaha aaye. No argument chalo", he forced her in.

Her eyes had a sheen of tears at Maan's insult and she looked at him guiltily but he had hopped on his bike and taken off.

"Aap ne aissa kyun kiya? Ek hi toh person hai jo mera hai, mera khayal rakhta hai, meri fikar karta hai aur aap ne uska insult kar diya?" she had cried.

"Tum uss awara ladke ke liye mujh se ladh rahi ho Geet? Mohinder Handa se, jiske samne saari duniya jhukti hai? Bohut ho gayi tumhari mann maani", Mohinder had scolded.

Mohinder had not liked her protests. Father and daughter had fought with Geet fighting for Maan until she was locked up.

Little did she know that her egoistic father would change her life drastically after that day.

She was uprooted from Delhi and was forced to live in captivity in Hoshiarpur where Brij and Taiyiji watched her every move.

There were no phone calls, no letters, no way to reach anyone.

Her father refused to meet with her.

Nor did she see Maan after that day.

He had not returned to her of his own free will.

Just as his destiny had split them apart, saving her destiny had brought them together.

***

PRECAP: Mohinder wept in relief as Geet bowed down to him while Maan stood stiffly next to her.

She stood there in silence as her dupatta was untied from his shirt.

As quietly as the fleet of cars had come, they left taking her groom away.
