Chapter 26: Task two, more to do
'uh hum uh hum' Darji coughed breaking their moment, Geet immediately flew to her legs putting the much needed distant while Maan fell sideward falling off the bed with a bang.
'I eeehhh I erm' Maan stammered getting to his feet, feeling ever so silly after the fall; especially with the looks they threw at him. He hadn't even dared to look at Brij, knowing the man would be clawing out venom.
'I came to feed the fish' he beamed at his innovation but then bit his tongue out of stupidity
'But we don't have a fish Maan jiju, hehehe I mean Maan bhai' Tito immediately corrected feeling the sharp gaze of his family, like a tennis match they had ping ponged from Maan to Tito within a nanosecond. Maan for a second wanted to leap out for a hug, all last evening he had diligently taught Tito 'Maan jiju', and now when it came time to bore the fruit he couldn't since everyone forced poor little young Tito to chicken out
'Hehehe did I SAY fish, I meant after all that rain theres bound be a fish in your fields hahha' Maan laughed nervously looking from Geet to Darji then to his Dadi scratching his head, which didn't help one bit. The woman shot daggers like a bullet though he looked extremely cute in his confused state.
'I need to shower' he managed to coup out before running off to his room while everyone else turned to Geet, who still stood rooted with her head firmly dipped low and her eyes looking to the ground, however everyone managed to see the gleaming shy smile on her delicate little face even when she wasn't facing them.
'Kya kaha 25 yr old baby' Dadi grinned rubbing salt onto Brij's raw wound as they watched Geet plating for Maan, who came back from a quick shower. Rano was also there talking to Maan but everyone overlooked her, some gleamed seeing the growing bond between Maan and Geet while others groaned over the same. The family nestled around the hall while Rano, Maan and Geet sat at the dining table enjoying their little time together, ignoring the rest of the world or say the family. Which of course wasn't on purpose but something which probably a lover would understand, and a mother ofcourse.
'Isn't she already better now Dida?' he complained like a baby running to his grandma and placed his head onto her shoulder in defeat
'I don't like her Dida' he whined hiding his face away from the trio; Dadi, Pinky and Adi who smirked seeing him all frustrated to which he looked sneakily at them from the corner of his eyes, making his Dida giggle
'Didaa' he moaned
'Beta we can't throw Savi out'
'Why can't we?' Brij demanded staring at his new nemesis
'Because she's my best friend plus soon to be family' she explained treading through his hair as he placed his head onto her lap as a final way of ignoring the group at the corner while his wife came to sit beside him holding his hand
'Geet really likes Maan, can we not give it a try Brij?' Suman stated seeing him wanting to answer back to Dida, he said nothing and closed his eyes contemplating her words.
'OK but you have to talk to me' he smiled sitting up as he finally found a way of pleasing his wife who took to silent treatment after the Sameera flirting incident.
'Fine baba but be a good baby ok' she joked seeing him turn to Dida with a pout as everyone else giggled around them
'Due to the incessant rain, I think its best if Mohinder sets his task instead of Brij' Darji called out for everyone's attention as soon as three came; Maan, Geet and Rano joined them in the hall.
'But what about me?' Brij intercepted loudly not liking the idea. He wanted to have a mud fight, Maan versus 20 men or so. Maan would have lost that hands down and then it would have been 1 all, but now again his plan was ruined. As it is, Brij was finding it extremely difficult to come up with an impossible task for Maan but unlucky for him, everyday his turn was further pushed down.
'Brij not again' Darji stopped causing a snigger forcing Brij to throw in one of his infamous glares towards the loudest member, Dadi; the old woman was annoying him to no end but she only twisted her mouth in mock, giggling louder with Pinky; obviously Adi immediately shut up not wanting a beating.
'I swear Dida, only for her age and that she's your friend. Or else I would have showed her who Brij Handa is?' Brij seethed whispering to his Dida who rolled her eyes knowing what exactly her grandson was capable of.
'Shut up Brij' Suman reprimanded and he immediately glared to which she stared back fiercely, compelling him to look away. In the background Mohinder had told of his tasks and Maan had happily accepted, thanks to this; Dadi was pulled away from Brij and his antics or else poor Brij would have been laughed at again.
'These are the files, check last week and tally up the cost and expenditure' Mohinder flocked a bundle of files, some so old that they were falling apart and others comparatively new but still needing a wipe down. He sneezed a little as the dust particles couple danced in air waltzing around him primarily, wonder 'how my OCD girlfriend missed this' and as soon as the thought formed, he broke out in goofy smile. Oh Geet and his girlfriend, that's sooo cute.
'Maan we haven't got all day' Mohinder called out with a stern look, shutting Maan's cute little daydreaming session. 'Killers of a dream' Maan mumbled while fetching for a pencil at the top of his little table with little or if any speed.
'There' Mohinder said passing him a large old calculator and then sat beside him with a file in his hand, without much ado Maan got started feeling slightly at home and also intruded with Mohinder's close proximity. A man needed to impress his partner's father, which was like a must in the life cycle. Then again files and finance were a part of him too, well technically speaking a part of Khuranna Construction which he will take over someday. With a positive feeling, Maan got stuck in signalling all background noise even Geet.
Sameera sat a little away from the makeshift office, which was a corner in the hall with a wooden partition but she could still see them through the holes. There was a desk, two stools, a clayed pot serving as a water filter, a big open book case with loads of files and a stringed cot for guest, she presumed. Though, Brij was a home but for some reason in a mood and stayed away forcing her to think of means of stopping Maan from winning. She wasn't new to the pleasing looks Mohinder threw Maan after he had completed the files he was given. Then there was Dadima who looked ever so happy, Geet too seemed pleased as if understanding her father's intension via body language. This wasn't the answer she was looking for, Sameera needed to act fast and on cue Rano exited from the kitchen and was heading for them with a tray of eatables. With an aim in mind and a sabotage in sight, Sameera immediately ran and then skid throwing the woman off balance whom Mohinder immediately rushed to catch. The eatables however lay on the floor or on Maan, and the drinks aggressively seeped through the calculation sheets and ate into Maan's victory. All his work lay in a muddle of Sameera's vengeance. With a 'oh no I'm so sorry' Sameera faked accident and skipped along singing a happy tune and left mocking an angry Maan who watched in distaste. While Modinder and Rano were creating a still motion picture of their own, flooded with romance and heavily sedated with inclusive eyes.
'Argh' Maan screamed watching Sameera escape while his mother-in-law and father-in-law hugged it out. His scream served two purposes, one Sameera knew Maan was angry and two the adults stopped their little creepy eye dance and maintained a safe distance. Rano then ran away with a shy smile, and Mohinder smirked owning of his own charm. Maan stood there feeling awkward and a little happy as since their hanging in air dance was freaking Maan out. It wasn't like Maan could pull them apart saying sorry but you're too old for googly eyes'. Parents are not meant for romancing, though in his world that was not romance.
'But that was on purpose' Maan whined as Mohinder passed over some new paper so Maan can redo the calculations, thankfully the files remained unharmed and it was only Maan's hard work that got destroyed. The same work, he spent the last few hours on.
'You can't say that for sure beta' Mohinder corrected encouraging Maan to start again, it was unfortunate but incidents happen and this was a good lesson for Maan. Restarting doesn't necessary mean losing, it just means regathering all wit and power to start again. Resilience and will-power are very important lesson, both for business and marriage.
Maan though annoyed continued, had it been at work he would have left the scene and demanded for the person responsible to finish off. He wasn't taught to pick-up, he was a starter for a reason but with Geet at the finishing line he had no option but to finish off even if it meant he needed to start again. With sulking anger, he grabbed a pen and recalculated the figures with furry. Sameera had messed with him, far too often and a seed of revenge was imprinted in his mind.
