Prologue

She felt numb as grief created an impermeable barrier around her. She could vaguely hear those around her, talking and crying, but nothing got through to her. For she was in her own little world, where everything hadn't been destroyed and there was still the chance for happiness.

But reality would always intrude.
He is gone...he is gone'. The words echoed at the back of her mind, threatening to break the icy composure and denial. To accept the fact that...he had left would destroy the last piece of sanity she had been clinging to.

"Bechari" An elderly lady sitting next to her patted her head and spoke softly, "It is cruel of fate to make you a widow at such a young age...only 26. You should be living your life, not having to face such a harsh loss"
Widow, such a powerful word. It changed everything about her; from being happily married to the man she had loved from the moment she had understood the meaning of love into suddenly being all alone.

Widow meant that no longer would she awake to the sound of her husband moving beside her, no longer would she feel his arms around her as she slept and no longer would she cocoon inside his love.

Widow meant that she wouldn't age with him; go through the motions of life, both the ups and downs. It meant that they wouldn't reach an age where there would be no longer anymore discoveries of each other, instead she was left with only the couple of years of their married life.

Some would say that she should have been better prepared for his death, after all the doctors had already warned her that he had only months to live with his brain tumour. It had been inoperable and he had been told that there was nothing to do but face death.

But how can you truly prepare? How could she convince herself that one day he would seize to breathe? That her life partner would give up on life?
"Beti, at least he has been saved from the pain of his illness" Another well-wisher tried to console her.

Saved? How has he been saved? She thought bitterly. For the last couple of years he fought against his own body and I fought for him, to die?

She closed her eyes, willing those well-meaning words to disappear and to be left with only him in her heart. Her mind wondered to one of their precious moments, when it had felt like they could never be torn apart.
Happiness is feeling the lightness inside of you, she spoke into his ear as she slept next to him. The feeling of flying.

Happiness is being with you, he smiled, his eyes crinkling at the edges, Even if I die today, I'll die a happy man.

She frowned as his words hit her, Why do you do this to me? She pushed away from him, turning to stare at the ceiling, not wanting to tear up at his words.

Darling, we cannot change fate but can change the way we accept it. His fingers brushed her cheek, I could bemoan my fate or I could enjoy these precious moments. Death makes these moments more valuable than they would be otherwise. How many people can feel these sensations as I do? How many can savour being with their love the way I am doing now? He leaned forward to press his lips against her neck, If I must die, than I would die in your arms.
If only I could keep you safe in my arms, her voice broke as she finally turned towards you, Maybe if you stay in my arms, death won't come. Maybe this is one way of being together.

But even her love hadn't been enough to keep him alive. The inevitable had come to pass and he had been taken away from her arms, never to return.
She looked around the room but she didn't see all the mourners. Instead she saw the images of him sitting in the chair in front of her, of him walking around in his boxers and of him leaning forward to kiss her.
Everywhere he has left his mark, a tear slid down her cheek, how can I ever let him go? How am I to live without him?

"Geet?" a familiar voice called out to her, one of the few capable of breaking through the blanket of her pain.

Blinking she turned towards the voice and saw the one person capable of breaking down her walls. She felt the sobs rise within her and finally she let them out. She choked on her tears but they wouldn't stop till he came to hold her hands.

She stared into his eyes to see their shared grief shining within them. She had never seen him in such a state, for he had always been strong and unbreakable but today even he was fragile.

"Geet I am so sorry" He patted her head despite feeling the same grief and pain. He wanted to console her but didn't know the right words.

"Oh Maan!" Geet cried out, "Vicky is dead...our Vicky is dead Maan. How am I to live without him?"

Maan felt his own tears in his eyes, as he thought about his cousin and best friend Vicky. "I know Geet, I know. But we are all here for you."

Divorces are made in heaven
by
doublecross

"Are you telling me that the deed of divorce that had been drawn up by your father 5 years before was actually hoax?" he snarled between gritted teeth.

His expression was grim, his jaws clenched, his eyes cold as shards of ice.

He looked on for an answer
Sitting across him was once his lady of dreams, his love and his wife Geet.

She squirmed under his scrutinizing gaze, she shifted uneasily in her chair.

She knew that once Maan got yo know as to why she had requested for the meeting all hell would break loose.

She sat there averting any kind of eye contact and replied with her eyes downcast, " i... i didn't know at the time, i had left it to dad and he had handled the entire thing, it was only the other day Dev found out about it and he let me know. He asked me to inform you since you are getting married in a weeks time and if you do so while you are still married to me then that would bigamy and even unfair to your fiancee to whom you are getting married" She stumbled and fumbled first but then words came out in torrents forming disjointed sentences that somehow made a lot of sense at the moment.
"Unfair! huh! at least you don't talk about fair and unfair and anyways am glad that your perfect old sport even makes mistakes" He mocked her father whom he detested.

Geet winced at his tone, there were times when he spoke softly to her, his voice that had a silky edge always made her quiver and a shiver ran down her spine, all those memories again made their entrance into her thoughts and she couldn't stop the sad rueful smile that touched her lips. Yet she couldn't just get swayed away, she answered, "Yes he too makes mistakes and too many of them"

When she said those words Maan's heart started beating faster, while she replied her eyes twinkled with sorrow, a slow sad disturbing smile played on her lips and her body appeared limp as if she had given up on something, a hope may be. But what? his mind screamed. She still looked so beautiful, so innocent her pink lips, her rosy cheeks and her porcelain skin with its flawless complexion only added to her beauty. The last time that they had been together she was all of 18, and now she was 23 yet she seemed more beautiful. when Maan got her call in the morning that day he thought that probably she wanted to apologize for all that had happened between him and her father at the party held at the golf club last week. she was always like this compassionate, kind thoughtful. Maan had noted the expression on her face while her father spewed his poison all over him. She wanted to stop it, be by her side, take strong stance. She had even attempted to cut her father off but got snubbed and snapped at unceremoniously by him. She failed to save the situation then so when she called him at his office and requested for an appointment he obliged thinking there was no pointing holding any grudge but what she told him now left him all crest fallen and angry, angry as hell!
cheaters, backstabbers he thought grimly.

"Now can you tell me that since you have supplied me with the information that can ruin my image publicly and put my marriage plans in jeopardy what actually we should do?" He scorned.

"Get a divorce, quick" she replied remaining calm

"And you think that is that easy and the judge at the court is my pet genie, so when i turn up he would be all willing and ready with the divorce deed and get me a quicky divorce, wow amazing!" He mocked.

Geet couldn't help but smile at his tone. she remembered when Dev her best friend from childhood told her about Maan's impending wedding, she had been shattered and broken. She had cried for days but somehow she had to gather herself which she did and threw herself in work to keep her busy and away from all the news that concerned Maan. For five long years she had chased him in all the papers, marveled at his genius, gazed longingly at the television screen whenever there was an interview of him stored all the magazines with his pictures and all the clippings of his rise. It was not only him who was living his success but it was her too.

An excerpt

A girl, who was crossing the road, stopped in her tracks and stared in fascination at the approaching duo. The driver hit the brakes hard, on seeing the unexpected human road block and stopped the bike barely one foot away from her. Instead of backing away, she moved forward as if in a trance.

"Wow. Hey there handsome. You're a wild beast aren't you." She crooned in a husky voice as she approached the bike and the rider.

"I would so love to paint you just like this; sexy and bold with such an attractive body. I love your style. You are such a show off, you big, macho, bad boy."

Maan had heard a lot of things about himself and was used to his ego being stroked, but he'd never been accosted right in the middle of the road and bombarded with such praise laden words, that too just at the first meeting.

She was messing up with the rules of seduction and flirtation, neither was she particularly attractive. She did not have an ounce of makeup on; her lips looked chapped and were free of even a simple dash of lip gloss on them. Half of her face was hidden behind huge sunglasses, above which her unplucked eyebrows, slashed across her forehead, looking almost like a unibrow. And the other half was covered with overlong bangs, that needed a trim badly.

Prologue:

Deep inside the river's water, a handsome young guy with injuries upon his face, shoulders and legs is awaiting his last breath. Today, he has just finished the fight with the fate of his love, the cursed fate. A cursed fate that nearly snatched away his true love. A curse that was now bent on snatching away his life as well. Did he commit a sin by falling in love? Was he wrong in trying to save his love? Is it such a huge crime to fight against fate that you are reduced to a lifeless body? There were no objections neither any lost love between the two families, just one thing kept them from coming together.

It was a curse, a curse so deadly, so evil that even God would never reward any sinner with it.

But a lover's truth and purity helped him fight. His dedication towards his companion helped him fight.

Even then, did he really win the fight? Did he succeed in winning his love back? Only time will say that.

an excerpt

The heavenly smell of freshly brewing tea with a slight hint of ginger and elaichi roused Geetali from the deep slumber that she was enjoying. She had gone to sleep rather late after failing to convince Miri about sleeping in her own tiny princess bed, which was set up right next to Geet's. Geet moved her arm gently under the blanket trying to locate the soft body of her daughter. But instead of a warm body she felt a large cold wet spot on the mattress beside her. Just as she was about to get up she felt a dead weight against her feet. She hurriedly threw the blanket off herself only to find a sobbing Miri curled up around her feet.

She picked Miri up in her arms and tried to hug her, but Miri resisted,

Mamma, maine bed me su-su kiya. Main gandi hu. Aap ka dress aur bed sheet bhi ganda hua. I am sorry mamma, she said between sobs as fat tears rolled down her cheeks.

Geet felt her own eyes sting as she gathered her daughter tightly close to her heart. Her heart ached for her five year old.

Miri beta, kya Mamma ne tumhe kaal raat apne bed pe sone ko kaha isliye tum dar gayi? Mamma promise karti hai beta woh tumhe chod ke kabhie bhi kahi bhi nahi jayegi. Tu to mamma ki jaan hai.

Suddenly Miri perked up? This was their everyday early morning session
Aur mamma?

Meri aankhon ka tara ho
Aur mamma?

Tu thande thande mausam me garam garam chai ka pyala hai.

And Miri knew how much her mamma loved her tea.

Aur mamma?

Tum mamma ka vasru(calf-baby cow) ho.

Chota chota sa. Cuddly cuddly sa.

He he he . mamma agar main calf hoon tum to meri moti cow mamma ho na.

Geet suddenly stopped cudding Miri and told her, bas hai, yeh moti cow ab aur kuch nahin kahegi.

Miri jumped back into her mamma's arms.
Thik hai ab meri bari.

Mamma tum duniya ki sabse beeeaaautiful mamma ho. And the best part is tum sirf meri mamma ho.

Aur?

You are flower toast with lots of strawberry jam.

Aur Miri?

You are the white bubbly water of Goa beach.
Aur?

You are cadbury chocolate without any nuts. Shhh don't tell mama.

They both laughed at their own private joke.
I Love Love Love You Mamma.

Mirari tum janti ho na tumhare nam ka matlab hai Miracle. Tum meri mamma ka bheja hua khaas gift ho. Tumhe dard hota hai to mai saans nahi le patii hu, mujhe batao beta kal itne mahino baad tum kis baat se darke tumne susu kiya?

Now secure in Geet's love and in her arms, Miri wrapped her tiny arms tightly around her Mamma's neck and pressed her forhead against Geet's and kissed her.

Nahi Mamma, aaj woh school mein fancy dress mein butterfly bannongi na, to main jab bhi who yaad karti hu mujhe zor se shu aane lagti hai. Aur kaal sapney me mein stage pe gir gayi sab bacche muzhe dekh ke hasne lage aur fir maine stage pe hi shu kiya.

Geet understood that performance anxiety had triggered Miri's bed wetting incident. She just wanted to cuddle her daughter and tell her it was ok not to go on stage. Her heart went out to her daughter who was clinging to her tightly. However, she pulled Miri's head slightly back and cupped her face in her palms and looked deep into her eyes.

Listen Miri, when you are on that stage I will be right in front your eyes. You walk on that stage towards me, and just as I am looking at you right now, you look straight in my eyes. Do not look at anybody or anything else. My eyes will hold you and you will not fall. And even if you fall on the stage, keep looking at mamma and remember mamma is still holding you in her eyes. And until mamma let's go you will not fall and mamma will never let go, never.

They both had another tight cuddle session. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Brijraj poked his head into the room. He was all dressed up and ready for work as he had an early meeting with some out of town clients, who had a flight to catch later in the day and so Maan had asked Brij to be there early to meet the clients.

Tum ladkiya uth gayi kya? Chalo naha dho lo. Geet maine tumhare liye adrak wali chai banayi hai, aur Miri tumhare liye maine bread sunflowerflower shape mein katke toaster me laga diya hai.
