Chapter One
Fully submerged inside the cold river, the young man was surrounded by lil' puddles of his own blood. Glass pieces had stuck inside his arms and legs, drawing out the red liquid in small amounts. He had just ended the last phase of his fight. This fight had been no less than a miracle. It was a joke that perhaps destiny decided to play on him. On one side, his love was drawing her last breaths, the only way to save her was a sacrifice. It was a sacrifice essential to save an innocent life, it was supposed to provide a new life for the lovers. It was meant to rejuvenate their existence. Balancing himself on the bamboo sticks that were till now holding the wooden drawbridge together, Maan dwelled in his old memories, the memories that once brought a smile on his lips. The ones which gave him the first glimpse of his love.
Few months ago:
Maan was tired after a long day at the office and went out with his sister annie and younger brother dev. They were sitting inside their favorite cafe surrounded by some friends. Suddenly maan happened to look at the adjoining table. There were around 4 or 5 girls sitting there, giggling on some jokes. They all were around annie's age, approximately 19-20 years old. All were quite pretty. But one of them took maan's full attention. She was fair and cute looking with big brown eyes and dark, thickly soft hair. Plump pink lips, slender figure and a really naughty look upon all her features. She was describing something funny to all her friends and holding a plastic straw between her pearly white teeth. The girls were listening intently, and this girl's tingling laughter rang in maan's ears. Just then he felt a jerk and came out of his thoughts. Turning around, he saw annie looking at him naughtily.
"Kya hua bhai? Aap kisko dekh rahe hain?" Annie asked him with a gleam in her eyes. Maan was a bit startled so he stammered, "Uh, nai to! Main to kisi ko bhi nai dekh raha tha." But annie knew her brother very well. She grinned from ear to ear and whispered leaning close to him, "Come on, bhai. Muje pata hai ki aap waha uss larki ko dekh rahe ho. Lagta hai aap ko geet bahot pasand aa gayi." She finished teasingly.
"Kya khubsurat naam hai, Geet!" Maan thought with a dreamy look in his eyes. Yes, he had to agree, the girl stole his heart when he first looked at her. She was not aware that he had been ogling at her. It looked like annie knew her well. He thought of taking annie's help. If anybody could help him find his true love, it was his only sister and no one else.
Finishing their snacks, the khurana siblings went home. Few days later, maan and annie had gone to oxford to pick up some books. Geet was standing there behind a large shelf, comparing the titles and pouting cutely if she disliked it. Maan was looking at her with rapt attention. Every wrinkle on her soft white forehead was annoying him. Every time she pouted, he looked at those delicate petals curving in a circle. He imagined holding them delicately in his own, sucking on them gently to suck the sweetness. He felt like biting them very lightly to enter inside the little mouth and taste the tempting nectar. Geet's delicate little body was a sight for him to behold, maan was imagining himself holding her in his arms, supporting her little head on his broad shoulder. He drifted away in his fantasies for a while letting himself drown in the wonderful feeling called love.
"Bhai! Annie's call brought him to his senses. She was standing in front of him with that beauty. Oh Gosh, could he control himself? Could he really keep himself from doing something stupid? But at that moment, annie said, "Bhai, ye hai geet meri dost. Hum dono college mei sath-sath parhe hai. Say hello to her."
Geet forwarded her hand with a smile. Maan smiled and took it, like he were holding a little baby. It was so soft, so warm just like heaven. Looking straight into her eyes, he just kept standing. His smile got wider and wider, like he had got his entire world. Feeling awkward standing like this, Geet tried to free her hand from his hold. She pulled a little, but the guy was nowhere leaving her. Annie saw it and intervening before her bro ended up with a swollen eye, shook maan gently. "Bhai, geet ka hath choriye. Aap ne usko kab se pakra hua hai." Maan realized that and left geet's hand abruptly. She was looking at him weirdly, and bid both of them goodbye. But reaching the exit, she turned back and smiled at him, battling her long eyelashes. Maan's face lit up happily. Yes, geet liked him too. He was sure about tht now. Taking his sister's hand he happily went home.
The hall was brightly lit up with lights. Decorations were hanging everywhere. Two souls were moving around inside, stealing glances at each other. Nothing or no one else mattered to them as they were in their own little world. A world of love, bliss and happiness. Maan beckoned to geet to follow him and went out in the garden. Geet followed him outside and saw him standing in the flower bed. She went to him and wriggled her eyebrows asking what was up. He put finger on her lips and tying a little white thread onto her middle finger, walked backwards facing her. He climbed up the stairs slowly, reaching the top one. Then he took something out of his jeans pocket and inserted it through the thread end in his hand. Sliding forward rapidly, it entered geet's finger and she was pleasantly shocked to see a beautiful, delicate diamond ring. Its body was made of platinum and it gleamed in the evening, just like a little diamond upon a little silky cushion. Her eyes brimming in happy tears, geet ran and embraced maan with all her love. He hugged her back, filling his breath with her fragrance.
Then maan lifted her in his arms and took her to the nearby cottage. Entering the room, he took hold of one end of a silky pink ribbon and tugged at it slowly. The knot in the front opened with a swish, revealing the words, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEET, MY LOVE!" written in bright magenta color. Beside it was a huge gift box closed with a ribbon around it tied in a cute knot. He gestured geet to go forward and open the present. She went and pulled open the knot. The flap of the carton fell at her feet, and she saw a big pedestal which had the statue of a beautiful girl and her charming young male friend dancing together on a romantic tune. The statue was kept in a delicate glass bottle. Geet slowly took it off the pedestal and looked at it happily. It showed the two lovers together in their own paradise, away from all worry and sadness.
Both maan and geet entwined their arms together and entering their car after exiting the party, drove away towards the seashore. The need to spend some happy moments together was pressing them very much. Just as they were passing the main highway after the signal, they saw a shadow in front of them. It was a woman, with long white hair and a dark wrinkled face. She screamed loudly in an eerie voice and a terrified maan drove right toward her, crushing her underneath. But he lost his balance and the car toppled forward, taking the two lovers along with it into the deep jaws of death. The car was in an invert position with the two of them inside, without anybody knowing if they were safe or not.
