Reviving my soul.
As students, as young friends they'd wished and thought and dreamt; building castles in thin air and chasing after every dream like runners to the finishing line. Today, even if their dreams and careers were intact; even when they had achieved what they had set out to once; things still weren't in place. In pursuit of the goal; their ways had been lost somewhere. On their way into another world; he knew more than anything else now, that they had left a part of themselves and their relationships in that shored city tucked far away in another corner of the world.
He had come here to see the girl his brother had tumbled head over heels onto and found his once best friend's girl!
"So I assume there's no formal introduction?"
Dev made his presence felt as soon as they settled down. They sipped drinks in quiet contemplation as Dev talked about the ambience and great food at the lounge.
"Why don't all of us dance?"
He suddenly declared and Maan narrowed down on him.
"No I guess..."
Meera quipped while Geet was at a loss of words. There was an uncanny awkwardness; a chilled icy tension that hung; one that was so thick that it could be sliced down by knife. Sensing the awkward dilemma and empty glasses Maan decided to step in.
"Let's get the ladies a drink. Shall us Dev"
Maan urged sensing the tension and the questions in the erstwhile 'best friends' eyes. The girls surely had a sea of talks to spurt but needed privacy; which Maan gallantly allowed now! The Gallant Tyrant he was...
Meera looked at Maan with gratitude, while Geet chose to keep her gaze averted as Maan and Dev stood up to walk down to the bar. The moment they were out of ear shot Meera turned to Geet.
"Talk Geet"
"What is there to talk Meera? You leave Mumbai five years back, engaged to a man called Samar and I find you here, in New York after all these years; in love with a man called Dev."
Geet ranted.
"What has happened Meer? You haven't been in touch, changed your number and even Samar didn't talk much about you whenever I called him"
Geet shifted and Meera put her hand over Geet's asking for a little patience and a lot of understanding. She knew she had people back in India whom she owed answers, whom she inevitably was destined to face one day and answer what and why's of her life. Hell! That was the reason she hadn't returned home; in dread of answering her beloved ones. And yet she hadn't in the wildest of her dreams imagined the day would come with such surprise and suddenness. Lesser had she imagined that Dev would turn out to be Maan's brother...
For all practical purposes, even though she knew his professional set up in and out all these months, Meera had failed to realize that Dev's business was under the Khurana Group's wing. It was a revelation for her! And the shock of her life, Geet and Maan. Together!
She had her own set of interrogation to do with Geet Handa but that could wait until her friend had lessened her madness and mellowed down a little on her.
Seeing the frown still marring Geet's face, Meera knew though that was a wee bit difficult.
"Geet I know I owe you a whole lot of explanation but..."
She hung her head in defeat, sighing briefly.
"Okay. Sorry for not being in touch for two years. After I broke up with him, I couldn't possibly contact any of our friends"
"But I was 'your' friend first"
Geet hushed.
"Even the fact that you were my best friend first didn't take away the reality that you were close to him too...I didn't want to put you'll through any kind of choice. Moreover, I didn't want myself to go back to that part of my life"
Meera finished with a light whimper. She had imagined this night to be a blast with Dev's brother and his girlfriend but here the night had turned around on her.
"I was selfish Geet. I didn't want to do anything with that life"
She sniffed and Geet knew her friend will cry if she didn't hold her. And that her carefully done eyes will flow down in dissolved mascara if she cried like she always did; So all the madness, all the anger, all the complaints lay discarded on one side as Geet moved to embrace Meera on the other.
"Hey Meer"
She hugged her and both reveled in the girlhood long forgotten that had come back with that one hug. At the odd side of twenties they had found the innocence in shedding tears amid a lounge full of drunkards and crazy music; be it for a few moments...
"I'm sorry for being mad, but all I've got in the last three days is shocks and jolts. It's just the repressed emotions jumping out on you"
Geet confessed getting out of the hug and dabbed her cheeks.
Once; she had seen Meera engaged to Samar, madly in love with him; and then she had imagined a relationship like them. Funny, understanding, deep routed and loved. She had idealized Samar and Meera once to only know today that they were no more what she had all through idealized them for. There were cracks in their relation too, and just like any other relationship, they certainly would have grown with time and broken it down.
But what was important now was Meera; and how she had come to know Dev. And probably love him.
They both held on to each other as long as they could while Maan eyed them from the far end of the bar counter where he stood with Dev; deep in discussion...
Maybe they need more time!
He thought ruefully, moreover he had his own man-to-man-talking to do with Dev.
"So when did you meet her?"
Maan asked sipping water while they waited for their cocktails.
"It's been some months now, seven I guess..."
Dev grinned like a school boy, scratching his head.
"And you say you love her"
"I do."
"Bro you know how it is to be...I mean, remember when you came back from India; there was so much of change in you...how do I explain it?"
"There was so much of positivity and mirth in you I'd never imagined I would ever find in my bro. Even though you didn't really smile and enjoy; you looked happy...and; maybe driven to go back to someone. At first we didn't know what it was but soon we realized what was there lurking underneath. That you had someone who'd made you like that...You know; I feel a similar goodness with Meera around. I feel like jumping outta my work station the minute I am done. To meet her! There have been many before her and you know that! But something tells me she is the last"
Dev finished with a sigh and Maan only hoped she genuinely would be his last. From the way Dev was talking about her, Maan surmised he wasn't aware of Samar, and Maan chose to let that be for time being. After all; if they wanted their relationship to work; they would have to work for it.
"You've taken to it very badly I see"
Maan teased his little brother with a small smile and Dev was mouth-hanging-open shocked to see this playful side of his brother after a decade! He grinned even broader. For reasons unknown; yet well known to his inner self Dev had lost his teenaged chilled out bro' through the mess their life had been then, until now; when he had sort of detached.
"And I see you've come back to be my cool brother with Geet in tow"
Maan tried to smile at the comment as his gaze again wavered to the source of his changes; who apparently was planning to leave him again...
---------------------
"I thought you said you'll would never materialize..."
Meera asked eyeing Maan at the far end.
"It's complicated Meer"
Geet huffed exasperated.
"Then uncomplicate Geet. Tell me what's happened Barbie doll...remember our group motto; one for all, all for one?"
And Geet smiled lightly at their childish pacts and mottos! She considered hiding facts from Meera at once because she knew Maan wanted Dev to settle down. Moreover, she had also come to know shortly that the revering brother Dev was, he had opted to see his brother find happiness first. And now when the two brothers were coming to better terms with this one lie, she wanted to play along. As distant as the brothers' relationship had been; it was deeper than any mine Geet knew. Even though she knew Dev personally for only a day, she had known him years ago through Maan.
But then Meera deserved to know. She was her best friend, her sister from another mother.' Geet chuckled at that endearment.
"What's so funny Geet"
Meera asked wiggling eyebrows. Geet sighed and looked at her friend with determination.
"I am engaged to Yash."
With a choke Meera spurted her sip of water, coughing it out on a tissue. Geet didn't panic knowing the exaggerated reaction her friend was bound to give.
"You what? Engaged to Yash? As in, Dr. Yash...Mumbai wala?"
Meera asked all worked up.
"Hmm"
"Geet be serious. You're engaged to Yash and dating Maan and you have the audacity to play Samar-Meera-Dev trilogy game with me!"
"I am not dating Maan"
"Then what is all this about? I thought I was meeting Dev's brother with his girlfriend"
"I was engaged to Yash three days ago"
And there was a gasp resounding from her. Geet eyed Maan and Dev still engrossed in conversation at the bar and continued.
"I know Meera; that you know I was lying that day. You know I always wanted Maan and me to materialize"
And Meera gave a secret smile.
Off course she knew! She had known Geet Handa in and out since seventh grade and one man couldn't mar that. She had known then Geet was a goner with Maan and that he too had it bad at that time. Only she didn't know why they didn't given it a chance; what transpired between them that night before he left was well down and buried...ancient history.
"I have been crazy all these years Meera, thinking about him even before the engagement. I expected a miracle to happen and him to come back and..."
"The miracle happened"
Meera put a hand over Geet's; completing her friends unsaid words .
"After Yash had made me his."
Geet's words came out cracked.
"But you haven't married yet"
"And I can't break his trust. He has invested a lot in this relation which hardly promised him anything. Yash has fulfilled his part of understanding and now it's my turn."
"Oh my dear"
Meera shifted closer to her and put her arm around Geet. She didn't know what she could possibly say! All three people had invested something or the other and the mess that lay was none's doing. But Geet was her priority, Meera reimbursed. She kissed her cheek reassuringly while Geet looked away swallowing tears threatening to flow out.
"It can't happen Meer. We can't happen"
She hushed and a passing young woman stopped by startling them by putting both her hands over their shoulders. The brunette had reddish hair and a wholesome body adorned in red tube dress.
"It's okay darling pies. It's not allowed in India but you two can be fine here."
She patted them with a little emotional sniff.
"Trust me, I understand"
She put a hand to her heart dramatically, expressing her concern and support with a smile. And the two girls kept gaping.
"You'll make a beautiful pair, you two. Don't cry chicken"
She blew them a kiss and walked down the aisle to her table, agonized at breaking hearts. A moment passed as Meera stared at Geet, they looked at each other blankly and a flicker of craziness passed. Next, the two erupted in hysteric laughter; uninhibited and hearty; just like college days!
"Shit! Not allowed in India? You're fine here...Seriously?"
Meera laughed her guts out.
"Don't cry chicken"
Geet mimicked the brunette and giggled; the table suddenly seemed to come out of the gloom it had been doomed since they had met. Now, they laughed until tears pricked at the edges of their eyes and their tummies ached with the bursting heaves. Like the timing was set to perfect, Maan and Dev walked in with a waiter in tow.
Maan's world tilted and turned on its axis as he saw the angelic face and that abandoned laughter erupting...His world had rewinded eight years when he saw Geet laugh with sheer openness and raw antiquity without inhibition. She took no prisoners as both the girls giggled like teens sharing a private joke while Maan was overwhelmed with a piercing happiness. His twisted soul seemed to have come undone seeing her laugh and all he wanted now onwards was to let that curve prevail to her lips. Forever.
The Stuart served drinks while Meera and Geet continued to laugh amusing the men in tow.
"A joke we missed?"
Maan asked pulling the chair while Dev pecked Meera on the lips.
"Nothing of importance"
Geet shook her head and Maan knew by the looks that he indeed had missed something funny. Geet and Meera together in right mood' could spell hilarious disaster he knew by experience! But somewhere his heart felt lighter through the disaster...Geet's glowing face that basked in the aftermath of her laughter was an extinct sight since he had met her again.
"Meera was the joke! She turns everyone crazy around her; at least you guys should know that"
Dev mocked and was spanked in turn by Meera. He winced playfully and there was a little lightness around again.
"So Geet; you were the one for bro since Mumbai!"
Dev stroke a conversation holding Meera's hand in a sight of public display of affection.
Geet looked at Maan and then back at him.
"Maan had told you"
Gee asked more than stated.
"Do you think he will? My bro is all secretive kinds, very private...But off course, you must know!"
Dev eyed his brother who was serious now.
"No. He never told anyone of us. But come on, we knew there was something or rather someone back there in India. Daadi maa spilled her brains out trying to get him to talk but..."
Dev winked and Geet blushed.
Things or rather feelings were so apparent, even with the man who concealed everything from the world. Her thoughts threatened to waver back into the past at the mention of Maan's daadi maa but somehow she was pulled back with Dev's quirky voice.
"Hey there's the music! Let's dance"
He pulled Meera up and gestured Maan. Geet looked at the silent question in Maan's eyes and knew they couldn't deny; so she placed her hand in Maan's and together they made way to the dance floor. It wasn't too congested, just the right crowd and a high paced track working its way in the background. The dark was intercepted by shrill yet sober disc lights and Geet squinted to adjust. In an action so shocking and agile, she found herself pushed into Maan's arms and Meera winked at her over her shoulder as Dev led her to another corner.
The devil get you! I'll get my hands on you Meera Shergill!
Geet could think as much she wished about revenge from her so-called-best-friend but for now, she was dangerously caged in Maan's arms; his cologne teasing her senses again as his hands worked their way up her back. They moved and grooved with the music, Maan's hands guiding her hips to the dance but gradually they found the pace reduce to smooth flaccid moves.
For a surprise move to herself, Geet put her head on Maan's chest and pressed her body into his contours. Her curves fit into him while she moved lightly under the effect of music. She was tired, exhausted and hollow. She needed him to hold on to her and Maan understood her silent plea as his arms tightened around her.
He was here when she needed comfort, he would always be here. Just like she had been there all those years back.
"Are you late?"
