Only one week was left for the semester to be over and Geet couldn't wait. Since this is her last year, she already applied to another college in Pune where she will continue her studies. She always wanted to do something on her own and create her own business in clothing. Pune will be a great start for her and maybe help her forget all the bad memories.
The laughter and humiliation is still part of her life even after two weeks of the incident but Geet didn't care anymore. She became numb to their taunts and laughter; their words didn't hurt her anymore. Her tears had dried up long time ago.
Ever since that day, Maan has been trying to talk to her. Why? What else was left to say or do? What other pain and humiliation does he plan to do for her? She has been avoiding him but no matter how much she ignores him and how much she tries to forget him; she fails. Deep down she still loves him. She still cares for him and she still dreams about him.
She looks at the vast ocean in front of her. The beach. Her favorite place to think. She always loved the beach ever since she was little. She still remembers the sand castles she and her sister used to make before the ocean waves took the castle with them while her mom and dad yelled at him for being too close to the waters. But her most favorite thing to do was to sit on top of the rocks and just feel the ocean breeze as waves crashed against the rocks.
Geet sat on the rocks letting the breeze hit her now and hoped along with that the ocean takes her pain away and make her forget. It was getting dark, she looks down at her watch, three hours passes by so quickly when you are in pain. She looks at the ocean one more time before getting up to head for home.
Geet waited at the bus stop checking on the time every few seconds. It was really dark now and never stayed out this late before; at least not by herself. "Babaji, please let the bus come soon. Ma must be worried for me and god knows what mood her dad will be in." She watched the cars pass by honking once a while to the girl that was standing next to her wearing nothing but a mini skirt and tight blouse. She seemed to enjoy the attention the passing by cars were giving her.
Still Geet was never able to understand why skinny girls get all the attention? Is it necessary to be skinny in order to be popular and liked by everyone? Geet turns her attention back to the road looking at the car honking and passing by until one car stops in front of the girl. Typical. Geet thought. The car slowly started to reverse until it was in front of her. Geet backed up a little and tried to ignore. She couldn't see the driver since the car had tinted windows.
Slowly, the windows rolled down revealing the person on the driver side. Geet looks at him and looks away. "not now Babaji."
"Do you need ride Geet?" (She looks at Maan and looks away shaking her head no.) "its getting late and might not be safe to be out and about right now"
She looks at him trying to control her tears.
"No, its fine."
She says low enough for him to only hear. She prayed inside her head for him to leave her alone or else she doesn't know what she would do. Emotions were slowly beginning to build up again inside her. But her Babaji doesn't listen to her. She saw him getting out of the drivers seat and towards to where she was standing. He opens the passenger door and waited for her to get in.
"I will only drop you home. Get in."
Geet looks at the time again it was about to be 9:30pm. She looks to her right for any sign of the bus and contemplated on what to do. Slowly, having no other choice, she gets in the car as Maan closes the door. Geet made sure to keep her distance in the car. She was leaning against the door as soon as Maan got in the driver side. He looks at her one more time. Those eyes. He could still not forget them. There was something in them that captivated them. He clears his throat as he started the car.
"What is your address?"
"umm you can drop me off at a near by store. I will walk the rest of the way home"
"Sorry, I don't do that. I will drop you home only. So please give me your address or else we could just sit here." (Geet opens the door)
"its fine than. My bus is coming anyways. Thanks."
"Geet wait. Okay. I will drop you around the corner."
She looks at him and closes the door. Maan starts to drive off. It was awkward for Geet and for Maan. He wanted to talk to her to get his answers but didn't know how.
After 10 minutes, he stops the car in front of the shop she had suggested. She quietly gets down after thanking him.
"Geet wait." (he gets out of the car walking towards her) "uhh what Sameera said about you..uhh you liking me...is is uhh true?"
She looks at him with pain. "did he really ask me this?" Looking away she nodes her head no before walking away. Maan looks at her walking away confused.
The exams week went by fast. After that night, Maan never tried talking to her again. She knew he got the answers to his question. Geet packs everything up in her room to go to her next destination. Pune. Where she would start fresh and forget all of this.
