Geet went up to look for Maan. She had never been there before and hence just looked through all doors.
"Maan?" she asked as she opened the fifth door. She looked in and saw Dev lying on the bed.
"Sorry." She said embarressed and wanted to close the door again.
"It's ok…bhabi." Dev jumped up. He looked at Geet and Geet smiled hesitanly.
"I am Dev, Maan bhai's younger brother" Dev held his hand and Geet reluctantly shook it.
"I am Geet." A silence followed and Dev and Geet thought about something to say.
"So, how come you came to India? I thought you lived in Canada?" It occurred too late to Geet that her question may seem rude. Dev, though, smiled and gestured Geet to sit on the sofa.
"Acutally, I am getting married soon. My fianc in also Indian and most parts of her family is here, too."
"Oh, what is her name?"
"Naintara Rathore." Again there was silence. Geet didn't know what to talk to Dev and she still had to find Maan. She excused herself and searched further for him. She heard the yelling coming from a room and guessed that this might be where she would find Maan. Shekhar came out of the room, saw Geet and patted her head with a sad smile. Geet also smiled a little and went towards the room shekhar had imerged from. She saw Archana on the bed, with Dadi and Maan next to her. Dadi spotted Geet at the door and gestured her to take Maan away so that he could cool down. After a little struggle, she pulled Maan with her. He walked towards his room and once inside, Geet closed the door, leaving it unlocked. Maan slumped onto his bed, his head in his hands. At first he sighed deeply but after some time, Geet felt him shake. She sat next to him and removed his hands only to see a tear stained face. She wiped his tears and hugged him tight.
"Kyun aae wo ab? Kya wo log nahin jaante ke unke aane se humari zindagi kitni bikhar jaegi?" Geet chose not to answer. She carressed Maan's back soothingly.
"Aur us admi ko aur uske bete ko aana hi tha to unhone us… us aurat ko kyun leke aae? Maa ka kya haal horaha hoga?"
"Kuch nahin hoga mummiji ko. Aap hain, Dadi hain, Vicky hain aur hum sab haina. Aap bas shaant hojaye." Geet poured some water for Maan to drink. He took the glass and drank it all in one go.
"Aap aram kijie. Hum kal milte hain, theek hain?" Geet got up but Maan held her hand.
"Please Geet, mat jao." His pleading face melted her instantly and she made him ly down and sleep for some time. When she knew that he was asleep, she left.
The next day, the atmosphere was tensed. Vicky stuck with his mother most time when they were out of their room and made sure that his father did not speak with her. Maan was in a foul mood, too, but didn't say anything. Dadi tried to behave normally and called Rano regarding the preparations of the wedding. At this point, Shekhar also started talking about what he had thought for Dev and Naintara. Maan's jaw tightened when he heard that Dev would get married in the same ball room of the Hayat hotel as he was.
It was a silent shopping trip. Naintara, fully aware of the hostility between Maan and Dev, engaged herself mainly with Geet. Maan would have liked to go home again but he had promised Geet that they would get their wedding attire together and he was not going to back out of it now.
Geet and Naintara found many things in the first two shops. Dev just muttered his agreements on Naintara's choice and Maan smiled at Geet's dresses. As the last thing to get, there were the jewelleries. Dev had handed Naintara his cards and insisted that she pay with them. She found it redicculous but she guessed it was because Maan was also forcefully paying for Geet's shopping. At a point, Naintara went to pay, when the salesboy returned her card.
"I am sorry, ma'am, but this card is being rejected." Dev, who was sitting not far, stood up and came to the counter.
"What do you mean? We used this same card in the other shops and it worked just fine." But even after a few more trials, the card got rejected. Naintara paid with her card and an annoyed Dev insisted to go to the bank and check what the matter was. Maan wanted to go home but Geet pulled him also to the bank.
"Sir, it seems that there is not enough balance on your account." The manager had dealt personally with the issue when he saw Maan enter. He was giving Dev a small, embarrassed smile.
"What? But I know for certain that I have more than three crore on my account." The manager got him his last statement. It was shocking to see that in the last month, larger amounts have been removed by someone to an unknown bank account. Not wanting to make a fuss in public, Dev stormed off home to ask his parents what was going on.
When the group reached home, Shekhar was seated in the living room, along with Dadi.
"Dad, what is this? Did you take money out of my account?" When Shekhar looked confused, Dev showed him the statement.
"No, I didn't take any money from your account."
"Then who did?" And as Dev asked, Shekhar looked upstairs. Dev rushed passed him, followed by his father.
An hour ago, Pammi was busy talking on her phone.
"I hope all is settled now. As per the agreement I send you all the money."
"…" the reply was short and the colour drained from her face.
"I… I will make some arrangements…" Her mind had to come up with something fast. All this time, neither Dev nor Shekhar knew anything. Her prime reason for coming to India had been to escape all the money lenders but what to do now? It seemed that they had followed her here. She quickly packed her bag and left from the back entrance.
Dev checked all the rooms and was frustrated neither to find his mother nor any of her luggage in the house. Shekhar was dumfolded and tried to contact her but in vain. Dadi wanted to ask if they were ok or if there was trouble but she kept quiet seeing Maan's stern face expression. The rest of the day, Dev and Shekhar tried locating Pammi. It became clear that Pammi was hiding something from them. Her sudden disapprearing was more than suspicious.
NEXT UPDATE BELOW
The next few days, the Khurana household was busy preparing for Maan's and Geet's wedding. Dev and Shekhar were still looking for Pammi and even Naintara tried to help them. For the time being, they had holded the wedding preparations (for Dev's and NT's wedding). Maan was at his office, when he got a call from Geet.
"Maan, which flowers do you want in the wedding hall?" Maan held his face with his palm. It was the nth call since morning regarding the wedding. Maan had given Geet all freedom for the preparations but she wanted it all to be both their choice. At the end she just called him every other minute, not understanding that he was occupied with very important work which he wanted to get done before the wedding. His mobile rang and gave him an excuse to get off the line from Geet. He put the receiver on his table and answered his mobile.
"Maan beta, please come home quickly. We are in great trouble." Archana sounded teary and Maan saw red instantly. He questioned his mother but all he got as an answer was the beeping on the phone.
"Damn, what on earth is going on over there? I hope this is not as serious as it seems." With that he left for home, still keeping Geet waiting on the phone.
When his car came close to the mansion, he could see that there was something wrong. The guards were not on their position and the door to the mansion was wide open. His instinct told him to be on guard and he slowly moved inside.
"Welcome home, Mr Khurana, welcome home." In the hall, three men were sitting on the sofa, smoking zigarettes. Dadi, Archana, Vicky, Dev and Shekhar were on one side, not moving a bit.
"What is going on here and who are you?" Maan asked, with slight hostility in his voice.
"Let me introduce: Pedro Gorgonzola, Luigi Pasta and Roberto Biscotti." The one on the left hand side indicated towards all the others. Maan gave each a good look, still not understanding what they wanted from him and his family.
"We are here to meet Mrs Pammi Khurana. She has an account to settle with our boss."
"If you are looking for Pammi then why are you here? She left and didn't tell anyone where she is." Shekhar said, trying to sound confident.
"Ah, and you are'"
"I am her husband."
"So, so. Your wife has borrowed a huge amount of money from our boss which you are unaware of and then she disappears without telling you." The one in the middle rubbed his chin animatedly.
"But what makes me doubt all this is the fact that the money which had been send to us, a small amount of the money to be repaid, was coming from the account of a Dev Khurana which is'" The man pointed to Dev with his ziagrette.
"I swear I had no idea about all this. I was surprised my self that my account was empty the other day and I even went to the bank to find out why. But before I could ask my mother, she had disappeared." The other men shook their head. They were not buying this story one bit. Maan was slowly losing his patience. He had a lot to do and then this was a matter of his father, step-brother and Pammi. Why were he and his family being involved?
"Listen, neither do I, nor does my grandmother, mother or brother have anything to do with all this. I am asking you for the last time to leave before'" But they had already pulled out their guns and loaded them.
"I do not care whose problem this is. We have a job to do and that is to get the money back that Pammi still owes us. If she cannot give it to us then you will after all you are her family." At this point, Maan started accusing Shekhar and Dev who also argued back. Dadi and Archana tried in vain to handle the two thick heads.
"Beta, can't you pay them now? I will repay you as soon as I can." Shekhar pleaded to Maan but he was not going to help this time. Being convinced that Shekhar and Dev knew of Pammi's plan, he was set on not helping out. The three men were now at the end of their patience and held their gun towards the three men. Between all this arguing, another person came in. Geet had also rushed to Khurana Mansion after hearing that Maan was rushing there. She had stood outside to listen to what was going on and was afraid that the situation might escalate. But then she caught sight of something and couldn't help but to come in.
"Wow, is this pure silk?" she felt Pedro's suit jacket and was amazed at the finishing of his suit. Pedro was taken aback at this unexpected newcomer that he lowered his gun.
"Were did you buy this suit? I really like it." Geet went to Luigi and had a closer look at his suit, too. She felt the material and tugged here and there to check the stitching.
"All our suits are made by our tailor in Italy. His family has been working for generations in our family and now his youngest son has started to do the clothes." Roberto explained sincerely as he met someone for the first time who was complimenting his clothes.
"Your suit is made by him, isn't it?" Geet asked Luigi and without waiting for a reply she continued: "You see this stich here, it is all worng. He had to to a finer stich because there is more stress on this area of clothing. You will see a simple tug will make it tear." Geet challenged Luigi and he put his gun away to check if Geet was right or not. Indeed, a simple pull made the fabric tear and now Luigi had a whole in his suit. He was not happy.
"I will kill that tailor. I paid him $500 for this and'" Geet's face turned to an O-shape. She looked at Maan, indicating with her eyes that here was another one of his type, buying without checking the quality first.
"Why did you pay so much, I can make you something much cheaper but long lasting and well fitting."
"You? Listen girl, our tailors are the best ones in Italy and nobody can match their work."
"But you haven't seen Geet Handa at work, have you? My tailoring is well known here, ask anybody." Geet put her hands on her hips and her face was red. She never liked being told she was second best because she was well aware of her capabilities. The three men looked at Geet and her posture. Something in the way she was standing and looking at them reminded them of their boss' mother. Pedro looked at Luigi and Roberto. Without saying anything, they understood each other and came to an agreement.
"Well my lady, if you really are as good as you say then we challenge you. If you can beat out tailor at a competition then we will forget all about the money Pammi Khurana owes us but' but if you lose, then you have to pay us twice as much."
"How much would that be?"
"Pammi ows us another $500000 and if you lose it will turn to one million dollars." Geet looked at Maan who was doing a quick calculation.
"50 crore." Geet' breath was caught in her throat. She most certainly did not have this much money. Maan understood her plight and took an instant decision.
"We agree to this challenge." The three men smiled slyly at each other.
"But do tell, why are you ready to forgive the debt just because of the suit?" Dev asked, intrigued.
"You see, in our business, clothes play an important role. Sometimes a suit can make the difference between life and death." Luigi said.
"Oh, and what is your business?" Geet asked.
"We are the mafia."
"But I thought they are in Italy." Geet questioned them.
"True, but we work for the foreign branch of our organization. We take up jobs India in particular." Roberto explained.
"And why so?" Dadi and Archana were amused at Geet's eager to know so much about their job.
"Well, our boss, Papa Paolo, always had a liking for Indian food. So he came over once or twice and made some business associates. But since he had to go back, he needed someone to look over the work."
"And how do you like India? Is it as nice as Italy? I always wanted to go to Italy. I am a great fan of Georgio Armani. His winter collection is really beautiful." Geet made a cute baby face making the three men a fan of hers already. But business was business.
"Since this is settled, we have to take one person as deposit."
"Deposit, what nonesence?" Maan asked.
"Ofcourse. What guarantee will we have that you won't disappear?" Roberto asked.
"You have my word, the word of Maan Singh Khurana." Maan said with pride.
"But a deposit is still better." So they took Dev with them.
