Part 22
After that day time passed by slowly, everyone created new routines that blatantly focused on Geet. They felt it was a time wherein she needed someone by her side, not only to talk to but to feel another person's presence. She wasn't morose all the time but was far from her usual self.
Maan didn't expect her to be normal. For he recognized this wasn't something she or anyone for that matter could bounce back from immediately. He could tell though there was something still on her mind but neither wanted her to feel compelled to tell him nor did he want her to dwell on it. So to keep her thoughts occupied elsewhere Maan started to work from home making an excuse the office was being renovated. He even had Meera in on the lie saying it was she that was supposedly doing the work.
By lingering around the house Maan kept an eye on Geet, making sure she wouldn't lose herself in thoughts by ringing her in to help him with projects. This arrangement was growing on him as it allowed more opportunity to freely observe Geet while she was busy and oblivious he thought. Maan would watch her without a care as she would make lunch or type out an email. But his favorite was having Geet explain her thoughts on a particular task over and over again despite having understood the first time just so he could listen to her sweet voice devoid of all the anxiety.
Instants like that made him wonder when the time would come for all her apprehension to be released. How far away was the day where she would be free of all hesitation in living life the way it was meant to be? Was there even a day like that possible? The last one clenched his heart fiercely but that only intensified his already concrete resolve to save her. The necessity to do this was much deeper than only caring for her or settling his dues. He wasn't sure how it started aside from knowing it happened unconsciously and only felt its true depth after realizing he might lose her but whatever started it and however it began no longer mattered, all Maan knew was that he was in love with Geet. The acceptance of that was enough for the time being to him.
She had never voiced it but Maan knew Geet also harbored feelings for him. It was her eyes that told him, for they more often than her lips did the talking. Regardless it wasn't his place to prod he felt especially not now. Every time Maan looked in Geet's eyes lately he saw uncertainty, fear and need. And no matter how deeply he wanted to be with her there was no way he was going to take advantage of her present vulnerability. Instead, he decided to be a companion ready to walk with her each step of the way until she herself was willing to move forward. So whether it took days, weeks, or years he was going wait patiently and fervently for Geet and only Geet, for the rest of his life.
Geet watched him from the corner of her eye. She noticed his gaze lingering a little more on her each day, especially when he thought she was too occupied to notice otherwise. This activity gave her mixed emotions of warmth and the ever ceasing guilt.
For the past two weeks Maan had taken out his own work time for her sake and it was taking a toll on her. The fact that he had put aside so many other responsibilities to make sure she was okay and not sitting in some corner twisting her neurons to death with memories that needed to be washed away didn't feel right to Geet. She believed such importance didn't deserve to be showered on her by him or anyone for that matter.
Then the fact that her own uncertainties had started to affect their once cordial relationship made her feel even worse. Gone were the days of bickering and random snippets of conversations that often ended up connecting them much deeper. She couldn't name what exactly they shared but knew with conviction that she wasn't ready to lose it. Geet hoped Maan realized that much from her side because if not, then it was something else to add to her list of worries. If the latter was the case for Maan, Geet didn't how she would explain it. How would she explain that she wasn't ready to move on yet she wasn't ready to let him go either? How would she explain that although she didn't want to be dependent on anyone she really did need him? How would she explain her reasoning of all of this and more without hurting him again?
In that moment the questions started to become too much for Geet to handle without breaking down and so she pushed them away. Geet diverted her thoughts to what everyone else in her newfound family was also undertaking for her pitiful sake. She wondered if she would ever be able to repay them for what they were doing only for her.
Geet noticed how everyone had drastically changed their behaviors. The whole office renovation thing was a sham she knew. Aside from what Maan and Meera did, Dadi had her help with the gardening or crafts. Piyu was growing more attached in fear that Geet would leave. Even Mr. Chopra extended his stay on the basis of incomplete discussions with Maan about their project yet spent more time catching up with her. It was all a cover up and a bad one at that to make her feel it was all ordinary when in fact it was anything but.
She didn't mind any of it though at the end of day, in fact Geet welcomed a familiar face from her childhood that was attached to some sweet memories that were there. She adored Piyu's affections and was gracious for Dadi giving her a chance to know what motherly love is. By wasting their own valuable work time for her both Maan and Meera made Geet realize just how much they wanted to see her come out of this. The realization of how important she had become to all of these people led to a feeling of absolute indebtedness to course through her veins.
The sight of her just breathing for the sake of breathing was getting to be unbearable for him. Maan watched Geet standing still for the past five minutes as if she was playing statue with Piyu while he was occupied on the phone. He cut it short and turned his attention towards her, "Geet, what's wrong? I've been watching you for the past five minutes just staring out into space."
She jerked back to reality leaving her thoughts incomplete upon hearing his voice. "Huh…oh nothing Maan…I'm sorry, I was thinking about what to make for dinner. Did you need me to do something?"
He shook his head knowing Geet was lying but decided to let go with more important tasks at hand than feeding her worrisome thoughts. "Yes Geet, I wanted to tell you about the phone call I had with Mr. Klein a few minutes ago."
Her eyebrows rose at the name and turned to face him. "What did he say? Was it about the court date that's in two weeks?"
Maan nodded his head in agreement, "The judge changed the date to this Thursday and Mr. Klein wants to brief us about what to expect before we go into it. In order to cover everything we need a full day so we will have to go one day early. Is that okay?" Maan blatantly left out the reason as to why the date was changed not wanting give another reason for her not to sleep at night.
"Of course Maan, that's fine." She responded but silently thought of all the things that could go wrong. Geet glanced his way and noticed he was scrutinizing her for the true feelings and decided to dash out of the room before he had the chance.
"I'm going to go make you some more coffee." She reached over to grab the empty cup off the table but Maan held her wrist stopping her. "You are going to make me coffee even if I don't want it?"
She got flustered with his unexpected hold and attempted to pull away but with no success. "What is it that you want then? I can make you something else."
He didn't know if there was any better view of Geet than the one he opportunely looked at her from. Sitting at his desk's plush leather chair with Geet standing in front Maan was able to look up at her face. It was the way it was meant to be he thought, she was above all things else now.
They had remained silent about the most obvious of events which initially left Maan unclear exactly of what Geet was expecting from him. But as the days passed he saw through her behavior that what she wanted was fortunately the same thing he wanted, to let him be by her side.
"I don't want anything else but to make you happy Geet." She lifted her head from the ground and looked at him. "I know you are scared but trust me…it's all going to be over soon. I will be with you the whole way…to make sure all the nightmares vanish…just give me some time to do it all."
It was all Geet needed to know Maan understood her despite the long unwritten silence from her end. Her eyes welled with tears of relief and he rose from his chair to stop them. She smiled at him and mouthed thank you not having the energy to verbally say it.
After grazing her wet cheeks, Maan's hands grasped her wrists again. "Geet, these are two things you will have to stop doing from now on, crying and thanking everyone. None of us, especially me want to see or hear either."
Geet realized what a mess she was in and also dragged them all in. Her constant waterworks sessions must have been taking a toll on them all yet they put up with it. Not anymore she decided, controlling her rampant emotional breakdowns was going to first priority and told the same to Maan.
"That's a wonderful step in the right direction Geet but what about the thanking part? I don't need to hear it all day long. If I wanted to I would just record it and replay it constantly over the speakers."
Geet smiled slightly at the teasing tone. "Maan, I have no other way to let you know how grateful…" He cut her off with a touch of his fingers on her supple lips. "I don't want you to be grateful…I want you to be…" Geet shook her hand and softly removed his hand to speak, "Ask of me anything but that…I cannot be ungrateful to you or anyone for what has been done for me…it's something that I probably will never be able to repay for."
Maan didn't like where this was headed. He wanted Geet to concentrate on her life yet she was still focused on evening the balance. Why couldn't she for once think about herself instead of others? Well he knew why, that would involve being self-seeking and that wasn't an attribute that came naturally to Geet. It was one of the things Maan most admired of Geet but it had to stop, at least for some time. "How about we make a deal?"
She looked at Maan hesitantly but asked him to continue. "If I let you repay me one day will you stop?" It was an intriguing deal but not fair or feasible in her mind and voiced the same. "First of all there is no way I can stop. Second, what if anything will ever be enough to give you one day?"
Your love is what would be enough, Maan said mentally. But it wasn't the time to reveal such things now and even if it was Maan wanted Geet to figure it out for herself. He wanted Geet to love him back on her own accord not be compelled to only because of what he had done for her.
Maan peered into her soft brown eyes and smiled softly. "You will know what it is when that one day comes."
That statement combined with the fact that he was still holding her close possessing a calm smile caused pure confusion to run through her. Geet could see in his eyes there was something he wanted specifically from her but knew him enough to know he wasn't going to voice it. So Geet did the only she could right then, say a silent prayer asking for that day to come soon. She wanted to give what he truly desired and quickly because he had been through as much as she had and believed he deserved his happiness too.
As Maan continued to watch Geet stare at him without blinking he realized her mind must have wandered again. He decided this was the best time to take her there. One glance would be enough to take her breath away and silence all her inner demons for a few hours at least to give her some peace.
"Geet, I want to take you somewhere tonight. Will you come?" After seeing the flicker in his eyes and feeling the excitement in his voice Geet couldn't deny him or even her own want to go. She nodded in assent before starting to ask him something until another voice cut in.
"You know what? It's totally unfair that both of you go out alone and forget the rest of us!" She said while tapping a foot with both hands on her hips and her signature pout.
Maan smiled at his daughter's antics. Geet only looked away from him turning crimson at hearing the accusatory tone implied to alone and the connotations that could be associated with it. "That's a little harsh don't you think sweetheart? I mean we all went to the circus three days ago and I've spent so much time with you since I've been home."
"It's still not fair Dad. I want to spend time with BOTH of you together." Maan and Geet glanced at each other a little shell shocked not knowing where this was all coming from. "You both left us and went to New York for two days, and then you went on the hiking trip, after that you went to a party together, and now you work together all the time at home. You keep hogging each other's time for each other and that's not fair!"
Maan looked at Geet who was not a few shades rosier but completely scarlet and clearly uncomfortable. He tried hard not to laugh but couldn't help it. "It's not funny Dad!" Piyu screamed before stomping away to complain to Dadima.
Geet wasn't pleased with his behavior either and tried to walk away but Maan was still holding on to her wrist. She tried to pry his hand off but neither would he let go nor would the smirk plastered on his face disappear. "Maan let me go before Piyu comes back with Dadima." Geet said desperately not wanting to get embarrassed in front of her especially. But her hopes that at least this would work were quickly dashed when Maan only shook his head.
There was a look of utter disbelief on Geet's face, "Maan it's already embarrassing what Piyu just said, not to mention you wouldn't even let me go in front of her, at least have some shame in front of your Dadima and let me go."
Maan tugged Geet closer to better lean towards her ear to huskily whisper. "If nothing else, always remember one thing Geet…I will never let you go."
