It's the weekend, everyone is probably out and about. It's usually busy around 4-ish GMT/9-ish IST
Maan had lost his mother, Reena with whom he was very close, when he was barely six years old and had been raised by Pammi, his nanny. She had come to live with them with her four-year old son, Dev. She took good care of Maan, who was quite fond of her, although she always respectfully addressed him as Chotte Maalik. Her son and he became very close to each other despite the fact that they were as different from each other as chalk from cheese. From an early age, Dev had a way with people. Despite being a naughty and careless child, he could easily win his way into anyone's heart with his sweet talk and charming smile. Even Maan's Dadima, a strict disciplinarian, was quite fond of him. Although the age difference between Maan and Dev was only two years, it seemed much more because Maan possessed a maturity far beyond his years, whereas Dev was his exact opposite, perpetually immature. Dev frequently got into trouble at school because of his naughtiness but Maan always shielded him by willingly accepting the blame for his deed. It was another matter that he privately dealt with him severely for the transgression to make him understand that he would not put up with his nonsense. Dev respected him enough to accept his punishments but also knew how to win his way back into Maan's affections.
At the age of 10, Maan's life took a sharp turn when his father suffered a heart attack. He never had a normal relationship with his father who spent very little time with his family as he was always busy at work or attending parties. So his presence or absence should not have made much difference to Maan's life but his father's confessions to his Dadima on his deathbed transformed Maan's uncomplicated life foreover. After calling up the doctor as instructed by Dadima, Maan had returned to his father's room but before he could enter in, he froze in his footsteps when he overheard his father admit to his Dadima that he was responsible for his own wife's death. Locked in a loveless marriage, Maan's mother, who had been a silent witness to his father's philandering ways, couldn't take it any longer when she learnt that her husband had sired a child through another woman. She breathed her last after consuming a bottle of sleeping pills. While still reeling under the shock that his mother had committed suicide and not died of an illness as he had earlier presumed, Maan was in for another rude shock. The illegitimate child in question was none other than Dev. The beautiful Pammi was just one of the many girls his father had had flings with but had no serious intentions to marry. After he learnt that she had a son through their union, he felt obliged to take care of him but did not have the guts to own up that he was the father. He therefore, brought Pammi into their home as Maan's nanny after his wife's death.
After confiding in his Dadima, his father told her that he was revealing everything at this late stage in order to ease his own conscience which had been troubling him for some time. Before he could say anything more, he had another massive attack and passed away. Dadima was as shocked as Maan in hearing the dark secrets of his life. She could not accept Pammi in their house after knowing that she was indirectly responsible for her daughter-in-law's death. However, she did not want let go of Dev, as he was after all her son's son and was close to all of them. She, therefore, forced Pammi to give up her son, promising that he would be better off with them than with her. Although it broke Pammi's heart to leave her son and Maan behind, she did so, thinking it was the only option left for her.
In all this Maan was the one who suffered the most. Not only did he lose his mother whom he was very attached to but he also lost the woman who took care of him since his mother's demise. He withdrew into a shell and became a recluse. As Dadima was busy running the company after her son's death, Maan lost out on love, care and understanding during the crucial teen years. He grew up to despise weak natured women who were all heart and no head like his mother and Pammi. He couldn't tolerate women who were unable to stand up against men like his father and assert their rights but instead took the easy route out by ending their lives, as his mother did or suffer in silence as Pammi did. This was one of the reasons he was attracted to Sameera, whom he saw as a strong and independent woman. However, that relationship also did not last long when he realised that she was at the other end of the spectrum, all head and no heart.
Dadima did not notice the psychological scars her decision to send away Pammi had left on the young Maan. She was more apprehensive of the effect it would have on Dev as Pammi was his real mother and, she therefore, asked Maan to take extra care of him, which he did, suppressing his own grief. Although Maan disapproved Pammi's subservience, he did not hate her as a person. He knew that she was a warm hearted woman who craved for love but did not get any. He knew that losing her son would have been hard for her. So when he turned eighteen, he worked up the courage to tell his Dadima that it was not right to cut off all ties with Pammi. He also explained that what happened was not only Pammi's fault but also his father's. Dadima was surprised that Maan was aware of his father's past and wanted to know how he did. He then told her what he had overheard on the fateful night his father passed away. Dadima realised the deep impact her decision had on Maan and putting aside her prejudice for his sake, she tried to track Pammi. After months of search she finally traced her to Canada, where she had married a rich widower with a daughter, Kaamya. As she was already settled in her new life, Dadima did not want to disrupt it but made peace with her. Maan and Dev too maintained cordial relations with her.
Their inborn qualities and their childhood experiences shaped the personalities of these two brothers in totally different ways. Maan turned out to be the deep, enigmatic and serious introvert who was also unpretentious, responsible and hardworking. His hard exterior hid a soft and sensitive interior. Dev, on the other hand grew up to be the suave, charming, extrovert who was also selfish, frivolous, shallow, and lazy.
Dev met Naintara in college and fell in love with her at first sight. She was the daughter of a businessman settled in Canada. She apparently came to India to get in touch with her roots but instead uprooted Dev to Canada three years ago, much to the consternation of Dadima. Maan too was not particularly fond of his sister-in-law for he felt that she was a gold digger. Dev and Naintara initially lived in Naintara's house, but after the demise of Pammi's husband, they moved in with Pammi and Kaamya.
As Maan, who had taken over the reins of the company from Dadima as soon as he finished his education, was too involved in his work, he couldn't keep track of Dev's dealings. He had been told that Dev was starting up his own business in Canada and had called him to wish him luck. Three months back, Dev had visited India and approached him for a sizeable sum of money to settle his debts. When Maan came to know that Dev not only fritted away Pammi's wealth left to her by her late husband but also ran huge gambling debts, he refused to give him any money in order to teach him a lesson. This led to an unpleasant fight between the two and Dev was forced to leave the Khurana Mansion empty handed. When Dadima, who was away on a pilgrimage at the time, came to know that Dev had come seeking Maan's help which he refused to extend, she reprimanded him. Maan's ego was bruised by Dadima's questioning his judgment and he left the Khurana Mansion in a huff. He decided to cut himself off civilization for a while and camped in the wilderness, shifting his base from place to place whenever he got bored. It was on one such occasion that he met Geet and his life has never been the same since.
Now looking back, he realized that had he given him the money, Dev would not have ruined Geet's life for the sake of her wealth. He felt indirectly responsible for Geet's plight and vowed to not only ensure that she gets justice but also correct the wrong that his brother had done to her. In this context, he was reminded of an incident in their childhood. Dev was playing with their neighbour's son and had broken one of his expensive toys due to his carelessness. As the boy threatened to complain to his authoritarian father, Dev came running to Maan to bail him out. Maan had painstakingly glued the broken pieces of the toy together and made it whole again. No one could make out that it was once broken unless they looked very closely. He was again left to pick up the broken pieces left behind by his brother. Only this time it was not just a toy his brother had broken, but a living, breathing young woman.
