new delhi: phoolan devi, the woman known as the 'bandit queen' before she entered parliament, was shot dead by masked men right outside her home in the heart of the city on wednesday afternoon. the samajwadi party mp had just got off a vehicle at the gate of the ashoka road bungalow when the assailants waiting in a maruti car opened fire, killing her on the spot. her bodyguard balwinder singh was injured in the shoot-out which took place about a kilometre from parliament. according to a passer-by and some reports, one of the assailants were also hit in the exchange. phoolan devi had returned home around 1.30 pm after attending the morning session of parliament. she entered politics in 1996 after an 11-year stint in jail, and was now in the middle of her second term as the mp from mirzapur in uttar pradesh. she was 38. the security guard and the bystander were rushed to the ram manohar lohia hospital where phoolan devi was declared "brought dead" at 1.40 pm. reports said phoolan devi received five bullets, three of which hit her on the head and two on the side. vivek kumar, a distant relative of phoolan devi, who stays at her residence and one of the eyewitness, said: " bua ko sar pe goli lagi. jab tak hum bahar aate woh gir chuki thi . (my aunt was hit on the head. by the time we came out of the house, she had fallen down.) he added, "we called the ambulance, but when that didn't arrive, we stopped a van on the road and took her to the hospital where she was declared brought dead." he further added that he hadn't seen any assailants. he quoted pandit kalicharan, another eyewitness, as saying that he saw two masked people running away. but police officials later said there were three masked men who came in a green maruit 800 car. they later abandoned the vehicle at the nearby pandit pant marg and escaped in a three wheeler, police said. phoolan devi had apparently used a colleague's vehicle to be dropped home from parliament. a police officer told reporters that it was well-planned murder. the lok sabha as well as the rajya sabha were adjourned for the day following phoolan devi's death. in the lok sabha, members observed a minute's silence in her memory. the lok sabha was initially adjourned for half an hour after congress mp priya ranjan das munshi interrupted a speech by left leader somnath chatterjee during the debate on the agra summit. parliamentary affairs minister pramod mahajan said that he had seen a flash on television and suggested that the house be adjourned to verify the news. when the house assembled after half an hour, home minister l k advani made a statement in the house and confirmed the news of phoolan's death. he also gave the sequence of events following her death. the house also observed one minute's silence as a mark of respect. the post mortem on phoolam devi's body has not been conducted yet. the police said that they weren't sure whether the post-mortem would be conducted at ram manohar lohia hospital or aiims. meanwhile, phoolan devi's bodyguard, who was also shot at by the assailants, is stated to be out of danger. lok sabha speaker g m c balayogi visited the hospital and left without speaking to the press. samajwadi party leader amar singh called the murder of party colleague and mp phoolan devi, a political conspiracy. he said that the uttar pradesh government had downgraded the security fo samajwadi politicians, including party chief mulayam singh, a month ago. amar singh said his security cover too was cut down but was restored when he took up the matter with union home minister l k advani. the samajwadi party's official spokesman termed the incident as "shocking". lok janasakthi leader ram chandra paswan, brother of union minister ram vilas paswan, said that his party would demand a high level inquiry into the incident. phoolan devi is the rakhi sister of ram vilas paswan.
