Chapter 4
Maan shook his head dripping water everywhere and spluttered as he tried to say 'Geet I'm..' but Geet wasn't interested. She didn't know who this guy was but if he at least looked sorry she would have been fine with it but he was still laughing and for some reason that made her angrier than ever. She didn't know why he was getting to her so much, she only ever lost her temper like that with Yash and that was only because he knew her so well. She'd never even yelled at a total stranger before let alone thrown water in his face!
She decided she'd had enough of this madness and turned to leave when she felt the guy grab her arm and say 'Wait! Look I'm really sorry!' Geet pulled her arm, trying to get it free without turning around fully. 'Please listen, look I'm me, sorry I mean I'm Maan!' he burst out the last part and Maan stopped trying to pull her arm away and turned around to look at him.
'Maan...Maan... Singh Khurana?!' Geet watched him closely as she asked. He smiled and nodded and she tilted her head a little and suddenly it all clicked into place and now she could see the resemblance. She could see the same cheekiness in his smile and his eyes tilted the same way and he still had a thick shock of hair except now it wasn't always in his eyes like when they were kids.
He had let go of her arm and was waiting for her to reply and she suddenly felt awkward so to cover it up she folded her arms and said 'Are you sure you're Maan?! I remember he was much less annoying...!' with a raised eyebrow. Maan started laughing and said, 'Well you're still the same; abhi bhi meri har baat pe gussa aa jata hai!' He shook his head and said 'You never used to get so angry at anyone else.' Some of her hair had come to the front and he reached out and pulled a thick strand sharply and said 'Ab kuch yakeen aaya?!'
Maan watched as Geet jerked her hair out of his hand and rubbed her head saying 'Oww Maan!' just like when they were kids. She suddenly laughed and he saw her whole face change as she did; her eyes sparkled with a cheeky glint and her whole face lit up. She was still laughing as she said 'Hmm, so first you ran me over and then you pull my hair...who else could it be?!' She rolled her eyes and he shook his head and sighed saying in a disappointed voice, 'I didn't RUN you over...but I still can!!' When she narrowed her eyes at him he held his hands up in apology and then held out one hand saying 'Hi I'm Maan Singh Khurana, sorry I almost ran you over!'
Geet seemed to think about it for a second and Maan suddenly realized he was holding his breath. After a few long seconds, she smiled a little shyly and took his hand saying 'I'm Geet, sorry I threw water all over you!' and Maan didn't know why but he felt so relieved. He smiled as he thought that maybe this time the decision of whether to stay in Shimla would be easy.
Geet shook Maan's hand and watched as a big smile grew on his face and she couldn't help herself from smiling back. She suddenly wanted to ask him so many things, like where he'd been all these years and how long he was back for but as she opened her mouth she heard someone call out his name from the Khurana house. Maan turned his head a little and said 'That's probably Maa...' He turned back to her and asked quickly, 'We'll catch up soon?' in a hopeful voice and Geet felt herself nodding. He smiled again and even in the fading light she could see his eyes shining. He reached out and pulled her hair, lightly this time, before saying 'OK bye Moti!' with a wink and then running away before she could respond! Geet laughed as he left, thinking Maan hadn't changed much.
As she turned to go back into the house, she saw something in the grass, glinting in the evening light and she bent down to pick up Maan's flute. She looked at it curiously for a few seconds and thought maybe he had changed after all... She decided to hold on to the flute till she saw him next and felt an odd flutter of excitement and something else in her tummy at the thought of getting to know this new Maan.
Chapter 5
Maan ran into the house with Geet's laugh still ringing in his ears and saw that it was his mum who'd called him. 'Kaha tha tu?!' Maan sighed at his mum's overly anxious expression, 'Maa, main bahar swimming karne chala gaya tha...' he smiled as he remembered the drenching he'd gotten. Chanchal didn't laugh at the joke, she gave him a stern expression and hugged him saying she'd been worried, he'd only just come home after so long, she'd barely seen him all day... Maan stopped listening and just smiled as she let it all out in a worried rush.
After a few minutes he heard her mention something about a pooja tomorrow evening and he quickly tried to think of a way out of it. Before he could say anything though, Chanchal said 'Sab log waha honge Maan, aur tera koi bahana nahi chalega!' Maan made a face and said 'Teek hai Maa...lekin ab main jaoo?!' He left the hall quickly and went to his room thinking he loved his mum but she was always so bothered by what 'people' would think and it drove him mad.
Later as he was getting ready for bed, Maan suddenly remembered his flute. He thought back to where he'd had it last and decided he must have left it on the roof because he didn't remember it being in his hands when he was with Geet. As he thought about Geet Maan smiled automatically, remembering the way her eyes flashed with anger and the look of happy surprise on her face when she realized who he was. He was glad she remembered him, he didn't have many friends in Shimla and even though they'd only met again today he still considered her as one. The four of them had been close as kids, even though Geet was a year or so younger than him and Divya and few more years younger than Dev.
As Maan got into bed, he tried to compare the Geet he'd met today to the one he'd known. She'd always been so full of energy and used to want to join in with them even though she was younger; he'd always loved teasing her and she used to believe anything he told her so he would make up crazy stories and watch as her eyes got bigger and bigger in amazement. Today it had been just as much fun to annoy her as always but he found himself wanting to know more about who she was now; what made her smile, what made her laugh and what made her sad...and what she'd been doing all these years they hadn't been in touch. Maan closed his eyes and sleepily decided he would find all these things out about her and more. He remembered feeling the need to come home he was happy he'd listened to it as he fell asleep with a smile on his face.
In Geet's house, Geet put away the last of the dishes she'd just dried and went to her room, trying to make as less noise as possible since everyone was asleep. She started to get ready for bed when her eyes fell on the flute she'd left on her dresser. She picked it up and sat down on the bed and looked it over thinking it was beautiful and wondering if she'd get to hear Maan play it; she didn't know how long he was here for. The thought made her sad for some reason and she hoped they didn't lose touch again if and when he did leave.
Geet hadn't thought about Maan for years; they'd all been so young and her the youngest so she was surprised to find she still had clear memories of their childhood even though she hadn't thought of them till now. They'd all been friends but although Geet would never have admitted it then (and even more so now!) she'd always felt closer to Maan than Sid. He'd teased her the most out of anyone but he'd made her laugh and also cheered her up when she'd felt sad about her mum. She laughed quietly as she suddenly remembered a little Maan telling her she could have his mum if she wanted. She remembered him trying to teach her how to climb a tree and then shouting at her when she fell but then putting a plaster on her knee while she cried.
She shook her head clear of the memories as she put Maan's flute on the bedside table and got into bed thinking what a crazy day it had been. She was happy Maan had come home and it felt like they were still friends but she still had that odd feeling she'd had when she'd woken up in the morning, like everything was about to change. As she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, she realized that she no longer felt so anxious about it.
