Marriage under wraps!

What prompts this new breed of telly actors to hide their marital status? BT explores...

Prithwish Ganguly I TNN

Bollywood superstars, be it Shah Rukh Khan or Ajay Devgn, have no issues flaunting their marriages. But some TV actors believe in keeping their marriage under wraps! Let's take the case of Gurmeet Chaudhury and Debina Bonnerjee, who publicly tied the knot a few days ago. But there's buzz that the couple's been married for a while now even though they told the world that they were in a live-in relationship.
Then there's actress Rukhsar who married director Farukh Kabir a year ago, but declared to the world only a few weeks back. Kabir says, "Rukhsar and I married impulsively and we wanted this to come out when the time was right. I was directing my first film and there was a lot of pressure on me. At that stage, I did not want my marriage to become the talking point. Rukhsar too needed to sit down and talk before announcing that we were married."
Bidaai's Angad Hasija tried his level best to keep people from knowing about his wife Pari. His colleague Kinshuk Mahajan too didn't reveal about his long-standing relationship until recently. Rather strange because there clearly is no reason why these actors should keep their relationship status a closely-guarded secret. "Viewers don't really care about a TV actor's personal life. It's not like they are going to be disappointed if they hear about a TV actor being married even if that actor is their favourite. And anyway a TV actor's popularity lasts only as long as the show is on air. So it's indeed strange for actors to portray their single guy image. Girls probably hide it because they are worried about losing out on lead roles, which also makes no sense," points out a TV serial director. And while on marriage, Sara Khan and Ali Merchant take the cake. The two got married a couple of years ago and kept that a secret. And recently they got married on Bigg Boss. Their marriage is in trouble, but Sara even today insists that they weren't married before. "No one wants to play with marriage. It is sacred," she says. Hmmm.... what do we say now?

thanks for the article..... I don't think Guru & Debina would lie about their marriage, I mean why would they lie and say they were in a live-in relationship if they were already married.....

who cares...? what matters is that they are together, married or not...? at the end of the day, they both are together.....i think in show biz, marriage is just an official stamp for almost all the couples. nothing new and shocking in this. guys, its my POV, no offence to anyone.

I guess hiding one's relationship status for Tv actors do make sense in a way.

Like the article suggests, a TV actor has a very short shelf life and if one has to be seen as hot and happening or what ever, maybe it's important for them to appear single as most Tv serial viewers are female.

If the serial has to be a success and the jodi too, then the female audience may accept the actor far more easily than if they knew he was married.

And once they think that they are established in the eyes of the public, they feel secure enough to bring their love relationship out in the public.

Don't know if that makes sense to any of you.....but it sort of makes a weird kind of sense to me.

I agree with this statement on the article. I don't care he was married earlier or not. Now they are married so there is no point whisking the same barter over and over.
