I think it depends on the person who is giving and receiving....very few people (outside of soapworld) give without expecting anything in return...

and similarly it depends on the person receiving- would they be happy only receiving and not want to be independent and establish their own identity outside the shadows of their benefactor (and that could be anyone- parent, sibling, partner, spouse)!
