"Maan, are you all right?" she asked looking at his vacant, listless eyes.
"She is gone!" his voice was barely audible.
"Who?" asked Dadima in confusion.
"Geet. Geet has left us, Dadima," his voice broke, betraying his pain. Hearing him, any doubts she had about his love for Geet disappeared.
"What? Where has she gone?" asked Dadima in alarm.
He did not respond but knelt before her and buried his weary head on her lap, seeking comfort. Dadima has never seen Maan like this. Holding his head between her hands, she lifted it up and looked at it searchingly. She drew in her breath sharply seeing his tormented eyes which betrayed his pain and anguish.
"What happened, Maan beta? Did you fight with her again?" she asked warningly.
He shook his head in the negative but did not elaborate.
Dadima was now losing patience with her favourite grandson. She did not like to see him look so dejected and lost. This was not her Maan.
"Come on, Maan, don't be a loser. I did not know that you would give up so easily. I thought you were a fighter for whom the word 'impossible' does not exist in the dictionary. So what if she has left? What are you doing here, mopping around? Should you not be looking for her? You are more than capable of finding and bringing her back. Get going before I throw you out," she said harshly to spur him into action.
She was hurt seeing her grandson's pain but she deliberately hardened herself in order to steel him up and help him regain his strength to win back the woman he apparently loves.
Maan looked up at her in surprise. He had never heard her use that tone on him before but then he had never behaved this way, either. She was right. He was hurt and confused by her pregnancy declaration and his mind refused to go beyond those three devastating words she uttered in the place of the three magical words he awaited with so much hope and eagerness. But that was no reason to wallow in self pity. It then suddenly dawned on him that out there in the rains was a devastated, lost and lonely pregnant woman, while here he was in the comfort of his own home, feeling sorry for himself.
He picked himself up and straightened to his full height.
"Thank you, Dadima for that hard talking. Guess I needed that tonic. Will find her and bring her back."
His mind was plagued by several questions, the answers to which he will surely seek. But right now the priority was finding her and making sure she was all right. He cannot neglect her in this condition. He walked out of the room purposefully and made a couple of phone calls to Pinky and Adi. Drawing a blank there, he finally called his detective who promised to check all possible places she could have gone to. He also informed him of a storm alert in the city. While he was alarmed hearing this, it proved to be a blessing in disguise because it meant that all transport into and out of the city were suspended for the rest of the day and probably the next 48 hours. With all exit routes closed down temporarily, she could not have gone far, he thought and waited impatiently for the detective's call.
