Part 33
Maan was perplexed at Geet's display of affection towards this man. She obviously knew him very well. But how did she know him?
Maan cleared his throat and Geet backed out of her hug with Ishan. She turned to look at Maan.
"Maan, this is Ishan. He's my childhood friend.", Geet said.
"Oh.", Maan said.
"Well who may this be?", Ishan asked looking at Maan,
Geet was about to answer, but Maan extended a hand to shake and said, "Maan Singh Khurana, CEO of Khurana Constructions and Geet's husband." He put emphasis on the word husband.
Ishan shook his hand, "Husband huh? Nice to meet you Mr. Khurana."
"Shall we get started wit the meeting?", Maan said.
"Yes, of course.", Ishan replied.
Everyone took their seats at the conference table. Ishan Malhotra was a big business man. He had appointed Khurana Constructions to build a new mall for his company. They discussed the details of the project. After the meeting was over Geet asked Ishan to stay a little longer so they could catch up. They went out for lunch. Geet dragged Maan along too.
"So Ishan, how did you end up in Delhi? You said you were going to Mumbai.", Geet asked while they waited for their food.
"After I left Hoshiarpur, I did go to Mumbai, but I shifted the business over here. There was a better market.", he answered.
"The business seems to be doing well. Your so successful now."
"Yeah the business is great. But tell me how you ended up here and married.", Ishan said.
"Oh it's a long story.", she said trying to avoid that topic. There were many dark memories down that road.
"mmm'I went back to Hoshiarpur a few months ago. I heard what happened back home. I'm sorry", Ishan said sympathetically.
"Its okay. I'm happy now.", Geet said looking at Maan with loving eyes.
"That's great! But I do want to know how you ended up marrying Mr. Khurana.", Ishan said with a smile.
"Well when two people are in love, they get married.", Maan said with slight attitude.
He didn't like the way this guy was questioning Geet. He knew Geet didn't want to think about the circumstances they got married in.
Geet gave him a warning look and answered Ishan instead, "We met in Hoshiarpur. The first time we met, he saved me from drowning.", Geet laughed. She continued, "When I came here coincidently, I ended up as his secretary and then the rest is history."
Ishan laughed, "I can imagine that. You were always the damsel in distress. Remember when you were hanging on a tree branch and you almost fell. If I didn't catch you, god knows what would have happened."
"Yeah I know! I miss our childhood. We used to have so much fun.", Geet said.
Then Ishan and Geet began to talk about their childhood. Maan sat there, quietly eating his lunch. Though Geet tried to include him in the conversation, he didn't contribute a great deal. Truth be told Maan felt left out. Most of Geet's friends were lively, like her. She meshed well with everyone. She would chat away with them and he would always listen. But he couldn't change that. It was in his nature. Other times he didn't feel bad about it. Yet, today with Ishan he felt that Geet had a profound connection with him. They had been good friends and shared many good memories. They both understood each other. He didn't like that aspect.
"Maan, so can we go?", Geet asked.
Maan snapped out of his thought bubble, "Huh?"
"Ishan just invited us to a party tomorrow night. Can we go?", Geet told him.
"uhh'yeah.", he answered uncertainly.
Later when they got home, Maan and Geet sat in the garden with Vicky. Geet was telling Vicky all about Ishan.
"Ishan and I went to school together since we were 5. Then he moved to Mumbai with his parents a few years back and we lost contact. He runs his fathers business now.", Geet explained.
"You seemed to be really good friends.", Vicky said.
"Yeah we were. He was actually my first crush.", Geet said laughing.
Sitting next to her Maan tensed after hearing this. His stern expression became more prominent. Geet didn't notice, she was busy talking. But Vicky was watching his brother as Geet told them about her first crush. There was a smirk on his face.
"Did you guys date or something?", Vicky asked to see what Maan would do.
"No, no, my family was very conservative. But that's besides the point. Every girl in school had a crush on Ishan. He was easily the most handsome. Ishan and I were friends, so we would always joke that if we never found anyone else we would marry each other.", Geet said going down memory lane.
Maan got up. Geet looked at him with her eyebrows furrowed. "What's wrong Maan?", she said.
"Nothing. I'm going inside.", Maan said stalking off.
"What's wrong with him?", Geet asked.
Vicky began laughing, "Don't you get it? He's jealous."
"Jealous? Why would he be jealous?"
"Its obvious'You were just talking about having a crush on your friend."
"No'I don't think so. Its probably something else. Or maybe he's just being his usual self.", Geet responded.
"What ever you say.", Vicky said.
Geet didn't think too much about the incident. Why would Maan be jealous? He had nothing to be jealous off.
The next day, Geet had class. She bought a new sari to wear to wear to the party. It was a white net sari with gold sequin designs. By the time she arrived, Maan was home already.
He was thinking about what she had said in the garden yesterday. She said, if her and Ishan never found anyone they would marry each other. Maan wondered, would Ishan would be a better match for her than him? Ishan was vivacious like her, they had a lot in common. Then there was him, he rarely smiled and talked only when necessary. Would Geet have been happier with a guy who was more like her? Then he thought he was being stupid. Geet and Maan were perfect together and nothing could change that, he deliberated.
"Hi baby, how was your day?", Maan said pulling her into a hug when she entered the room.
"It was good. What about yours?", Geet said hugging him back.
"Ehh'mine was the same as usual.", Maan replied.
His chin rested on her head. He could smell the usual sent of her shampoo. He kissed her with ardor. On of her arms was around his neck while on hand held on to his cheek affectionately. His hands held on to her slim waist. Her soft lips felt like bliss. He had kissed her countless times already, yet neither of them ever got tired of it.
"I thought you would be home earlier.", Maan said hugging her again.
"Yeah I would have been, but I went to buy a new sari for Ishan's party tonight.", Geet answered.
"Oh." Maan said letting go of her. He walked to the bed and sat down.
"I'll show you the sari.", Geet said taking it out of the bag.
She brought it over to Maan, who seemed uninterested.
"Yeah its nice.", Maan said barely looking at it.
Geet gave him a perplexed look, "Do you really like it?"
"Yeah I do."
Later Geet was getting ready for the party. Maan was still sitting around.
"Maan! Why are you not getting dressed?", Geet said.
"I will.", Maan replied carelessly.
Geet rolled her eyes and began putting on her sari. Maan took a newspaper and started to read. What was wrong with him?, she thought. Soon she was ready and he still wasn't.
"Maan! Are you coming or not?", Geet said in aggravation.
"Do you even want me to come?", Maan said not looking up from the newspaper.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means if you want to spend some alone time with your friend, you can tell me. Main kabab mein hadi nahin banna cahata.", Maan told her.
[Translation: "I don't want be a third wheel."]
"What?! Why are you saying that?"
"I don't know, maybe because you and your friend seem so chummy together and I'll just ruin the mood for you guys."
"I don't understand where all this nonsense is coming from.", Geet said putting her hands on her hips.
Maan walked up to her and grabbed the anchal of her sari, " You buy a new sari to wear, especially for him." He let go of the anchal and held her firmly by the shoulders, "You must have wanted to impress him very much to go out of your way and look so pretty for him."
Geet could clearly see the rage in Maan's eyes now. She stared at him in distress. Vicky was right, Maan was jealous.
"Maan your hurting me.", Geet said.
"Why are you so excited to go see this Ishan, haan? Am I not good enough for you.", His grip became tighter.
Geet could not believe what her ears just heard. How could Maan say something so low? She pushed him away with full force.
"How dare you say that to me?! I can't even believe you would think something like that!", She was fuming. "You know what? I'm going to go to Ishan's party. I don't even want to go with you!", she left the room.
Maan stared after her. The consequences of his action were just setting in. What was he thinking? How could he say something so horrible to her? He said something he didn't mean at all, only because he was insecure about loosing her. He looked in the mirror, he hated himself so greatly. Anger seeped into every part of his features. He punched the mirror so hard that the whole thing shattered to pieces and his hand was pouring blood.
Geet arrived at the party. She didn't really want to be there, she only came out of anger. It was still confusing her as to why Maan had reacted like that. Never in a million years did she think that Maan would say such a terrible thing to her. She had never felt this angry at him before. They always had their arguments and tiffs, but this was unforgivable. It was beyond her to think that he would even consider such an outrageous idea about her and Ishan. Maan was the only man in her heart, she thought that part was a given. What brought all this on?, she wondered.
Ishan introduced her to his friends. He inquired where Maan was, and she told him that Maan got stuck at work. Ishan asked Geet to dance with him. Geet halfheartedly gave in and walked to the dance floor.
At that moment, Maan walked in to the party hall. His eyes searched for Geet. Then he found her dancing in the middle of the dance floor with Ishan.
