The Bedouins and the camel:
Sheikha Atina Umm Yasmine was the leader of a Bedouin tribe. She was a proud , respected , well educated strong woman. All the Bedouin women treated her as a godly figure. For some time now Sheikha had a desire to complete her doctorate on the 'plight of local Bedouin women', but didn't know to whom to entrust the responsibility of the camp.
Dasa Al Hassan was a weary traveler from the Thar desert of Rajasthan. One fine day, he arrived at the Bedouin camp looking for water for himself, his camel and his flock of sheep(346 in number). Dasa Al Hassan was a vegetarian, but he needed to count sheep every night to get sleep. Atina Umm Yasmine displayed splendid Arab hospitality by offering him fresh dates, dates stuffed with walnuts, cashew nuts and almonds, dates dipped in Tahini, dates coated with Til seeds and similar list with figs.
She was yet to invent date and fig pickles. She also offered him well water. She found the new comer smart, technically educated and very soft spoken. It was instant rapport between the two. Sheikha decided to entrust the responsibility of the camp and a magical lamp to her new found brother and go on a world trip to finish her thesis, which Dasa readily accepted. She warned him about the lamp," I used to be a biology teacher and taught generations of children. But there was one wretched student, who made me forget my subject and drove me to insanity. Out of frustration , I changed that student into a genie and locked it up in this lamp. This genie can create havoc if released, so please be careful and take good care of it until my return".
Dasa Al Hassan settled himself in the new surroundings. After few months he was bored to death, so built a television set and a dish satellite, & started watching all the programmes to keep himself busy. The tribe womenfolk wanted another magic box like the one he had and he built for them another one to watch Arabic programmes with endless hours of non stop loud talking or men riding horses or camel. The women were surprised to find Dasa laughing all the time even though people in his magic box were fighting or shouting at each other or crying. So they became interested in his programmes, but they did not understand head or tail of the new language. Dasa was sitting and wondering about solving his present issue, when he accidently rubbed the lamp. Swoosh – out came the genie.
Genie : " Thalaivarukku indha adimai vanakkam." Dasa was surprised that the bhoodam could speak tamil. Genie:" naanum tamizh than , en peru Giriadimai. Ennakku paadam kathu kudukka bayanda andha Sjeikha ennai bhoodam aakittanga. You have brought me out, it better be for some good reason, or else I will eat you."
Dasa had a brilliant idea, "You teach me Arabic." Since Dasa was a very very fast learner, the work was done in a few days time. Genie wanted more work. So he entrusted the task of translating a serial by the name of 'Anandham' to genie who kept busy for many years. Since Dasa had become well versed in Arabic, he translated many other serials into Arabic . He sometimes arranged for live telecast of world matches for the food ball craze children of the tribe. After all the work, at the end of each day, he was so tired that he stopped counting sheep. Only if he had done, he would have known only 3 of them remained after all the year round festival celebrations by the tribal people.
Ippadiye kaalam orundu odi pocchu. Atina umm Yasmine having completed her thesis with a final interview from a Manhattan policeman, returned to her camp and surprised to find a totally different environment. Dasa offered her sea-water-turned drinking water, bottled as spring water.
She thanked him very much and arranged for a ceremony to honour Dasa Al Hassan for all the services rendered by him to her tribe. She wrote to the government, who immediately inspected all the developments and issued citizenship and promised villas in one full arm of the upcoming palm island to the camel and said goodbye to Dasa. Dasa continued his journey empty handed – the last 3 of his sheep used in the honouring ceremony. But did he really? Where is the lamp? What will the tribal women do w/o the two?
