Everyone reached Mumbai City Hospital nearly thirty minutes after they had left the Godbole residence. As soon as they had gotten out of the car they all rushed inside. Kanya was being lead by Pooja and Malika, one holding her from each side. Kanya wasn't really paying attention to anything but from the corner of her eyes she was a sliver piece of metal shining under the lights of the parking lot. She didn't know why but she looked over in that direction, the second she faced the object, she regretted it. There, in one parking spot of the parking lot was a badly crumpled black car. The car was a Mercedes because it was the hood ornament that shone under the lights. It looked like a piece of crumpled paper because it was in such bad condition. The head lights were crushed, the hood was pushed back, the side mirrors were hanging by a cable, the front windshield and side mirrors were shattered. No one had to tell her because Kanya already knew that it was Ranbir's car. She didn't let her mind think about what condition Ranbir was in. If his car was in that condition, God only knew.
Harpal, Aayan, Siddhart and Anand were still standing outside of Ranbir's room. As everyone else approached the group they noticed that a police officer was standing off to the side. The officer seemed to be asking them questions as part of the investigation.
M- Siddhart, koi khabar hai kya? (Siddhart, do you have any new news?)
S- Nahin cachi, aur koi khabar nahin hai, baas yeh officer aaya hai. (No cachi, no new news, just this officer.)
Aditya- Kya baath hai officer, kuch paata chala? Ranbir ka accident kaise hua? (What's the matter officer, did you find out anything? How did Ranbir get into the accident?)
O(fficer)- Humne pehla investigation kaar liya hai…lekin, results mein kuch ajeeb baath hai. (We have done our initial investigation…the results are a bit weird.)
Aditya- Kya matlab? (What do you mean?)
O- Matlab ke hum yeh nahin jaante ke yeh accident tha, yah phir… (I mean that we don't know if it was an accident or…)
M- Yah phir kya officer… (Or what officer…)
O- Dekhiyeh, accident site par breaks ki nishani nahin, koi tire tracks nahin hai. (Look, there were no break marks at the accident, no tire tracks.)
Aditya- Haan toh? (Yeah, and?)
O- Toh, hosakta hai ke yeh accident naa ho. Shayad Mr. Nanda ne yeh jan buj ke kiya hai. (So it is possible that this wasn't an accident. Maybe Mr. Nanda did all of this on purpose.)
Anand- Yeh, aap kya keh rahe hai officer? Ranbir aaisa kyun karega? (What are you saying officer? Why would Ranbir do that?)
M- Mera beta aaisa nahin karega! Khabi nahin karega! (My son wouldn't do that! Never!)
O- Main toh baas aap saab ko yeh hi imformation bata raha hoon joh mere paas hai. Kya Ranbir ka koi bhi vaja hosakta hai…matalb… (I am just giving you the information that I have. Was there a reason that Ranbir…I mean…)
Aayan- Cachu aaisa kuch nahin karenge! Woh aaisa kyun kare? Office mein koi tension nahin hai, ghaar mein bhi koi tension nahin hai. Jahaan tak hum saab jaante hai, Cachu toh Kanya ke saath bhi bohot kush tha. (Cachu would never do something like that! Why would he do that? There is no tension at work, no tension at home. As far as we know, cachu was happy with Kanya.)
M- Kush hai, woh Kanya se saath kush hai. (Is happy, he is happy with Kanya.)
O- Main jaanta hoon ke aap saab bohot pareshan hai, issi liyeh main aap saab se bad mein baath karta hoon. Hum witnesses ki talash mein hai, shayad koi samne aajaye. Vaise bhi jaab tak Mr. Nanda jaag naa jaye, hume tik se kuch paata nahin chalega. (I know that you are all stressed, that is why I will talk to you all later. We are looking for a witness to the accident, maybe someone will come forward. Besides, until Mr. Nanda is wake, we won't know anything concrete.)
The officer left and everyone began discussing how absurd the notion was that Ranbir would intentionally run his car into something or cause an accident on purpose. Kanya was sitting on one of the chairs next to both her sisters. She kept playing the scenes from the previous day over and over again in her mind; the confrontation about Chunnu at the office, her making Ranbir jealous by cuddling up with Chunnu. What if Ranbir did cause the accident? What if she had been the root behind Ranbir's accident? What if…?
Kanya was so lost in her own world that she hadn't seen a nurse go inside to check up on Ranbir. It wasn't until there was commotion in the hall after she came out that Kanya noticed anything. The nurse was making notes as a doctor came and joined him.
M- Doctor, mera beta kaisa hai? (Doctor, how is my son?)
Dr- Malika ji, maine aapse pehle kaha tha ke Ranbir ki halta bohot serious aur nazook bhi hai. Lekin, uske vital signs dekhke lagta hai ke woh aab stable hai. Uska oxygen level 90's mein hai, blood pressure bhi stable hai, these are very good signs. (Malika ji, I had told you before that Ranbir is in a serious but fragile state. However, his vital signs are stable now. His blood oxygen levels are in the 90's, his blood pressure is stable, these are very good signs.)
Aayan- Lekin doctor, cachu abhi tak kyun nahin jaage? (But doctor, why hasn't cachu woken up yet?)
Dr- Dekhiyeh, uska body ek bohot badi hadse se guzra hai, shock mein hai. Abhi ghabrane ki koi baath nahin hai, humne CT scans kar liya hai, aur saab kuch tik hai. Aab baas hume intezar karna padega ke kaab woh jage ga. Haan aagar woh kuch ghante mein nahin jaage taab hum aur tests karenge. (Look, his body has been through a big trauma, it is in shock. There is nothing to worry about now, we have done the CT scans and everything is fine. We just have to wait now for him to wake up. Yes, if he doesn't wake up in a few hours, we will run more tests.)
Aditya- Kya hum abhi Ranbir ko dekh sakte hai? (Can we see Ranbir now?)
Dr- Haan, mil sakte hai lekin zyada dehr tak nahin. Aap ek ek karke mil sakte hai. (Yes, you can see him, but not for too long. You can go in one at a time to see him.)
M- Thank you doctor, thank you so much.
Malika was the first to run in and see her son. She hadn't been in there for long, but when she came out she went straight for Kanya. Kanya was still sitting with her sisters, one on each side of her.
M- Chal Kanya, aab tu jaa. (Go Kanya, you go.)
K- N…nahin, main nahin jaungi. (N…no, I won't go.)
P- Kya pagloon jaise baath kar raha hai tu! Kyun nahin jayega? (Why are you talking like a crazy person? Why won't you go?)
K- Main abhi nahin jaa sakti…baas…nahin jaa sakti. (I can't go now…I just…I can't go!)
M- Lekin kyun Kanya? Kya hua hai tumhe? Kya tum dono ka kuch jagda hua hai? (But why Kanya? What happened to you? Did you two have a fight?)
P- Ranbir behosh pada hai, aur tu… (Ranbir is over there unconscious, and you…)
C- Aare aunty, aagar Chutki nahin jaana chati toh aap zabardasti maat kijiyeh. (Come on anuty, if Chutki doesn't want to do, you shouldn't force her.)
Aditya- Mr. Chunnu yeh ek family matter hai, aap door rahe toh aacha hoga. (Mr. Chunnu this is a family matter, it is better if you keep away from it.)
C- Main toh baas… (I was just…)
A- Aditya ji tik hi keh raha hai Chunnu. Yeh Ranbir aur Kanya ki mamla hai, aur abhi Ranbir ko Kanya ki zarurat hai. (Aditya ji is right Chunnu. This is between Ranbir and Kanya, and right now Ranbir needs Kanya.)
M- Chal Kanya… (Come Kanya…)
K- Nahin… (No…)
P- Tu jayegi…zaroor jayegi. (You will go…you will definitely go.)
Pammi walked over to her daughter, took her by the hand and forced her to go towards Ranbir's room. Pammi had stepped inside the room but Kanya pulled back and stopped right at the door.
The man that she had seen was not the one what was seeing right now. The Ranbir Nanda that she knew was in-your-face, larger than life, outrageous, loud, funny and annoying. The Ranbir Nanda that she was seeing now was nothing, nothing at all. Her once lively husband was now lying in a hospital bed attached to so many machined it made Kanya's head spin.
She looked and saw an IV attached to his arm keeping him hydrated, a BP cuff attached to his other arm monitoring his blood pressure, a pulse-ox on the index finger of his right hand. He had a cast on his leg, bandages all over his arms and head, a band-aid or two on his face, even and nasal canula supplying him oxygen; he was dressed in a blue printed hospital gown and had a pale yellow blanket pulled up to his chest. There were beeping sounds coming from different machines, the smell of the hospital, the dimness of the room, the ominous feeling in her heart, it was all too much for Kanya to handle.
P- Kya hua Kanya, tu rukh kyun gayi? Dek nahin raha hai ke jamain raja ka kya halat hai? Kanya andar aa… (Kanya what happened, why did you stop? Can't you see how bad jamai raja is? Kanya come in…)
Kanya couldn't take it any more, everything was in her face and it was getting to her, she couldn't be here anymore, she just couldn't; she couldn't breath, she needed air. Before she knew it, Kanya was running down the hospital corridor as her family members called out to her. She had even heard Chunnu's voice calling out to her, almost trailing her, but then she heard Pooja stop Chunnu from following her.
Kanya ran outside and took deep breaths, letting the cool air into her body. She managed to find a seat and sit down, because if she didn't, she knew her legs would not hold her for too long. She hid her face in her palms as she tried to gather her wits. A few minutes later, when Kanya uncovered her face, her eyes fell onto Ranbir's car again. Looking at that mangled up metal, she couldn't help but wonder, what happened in that car?
*~*~*~*Flash Back Begins*~*~*~*
Ranbir slammed his door shut, started his car, and raced out of the chawl as if Satan was after him. Thirty minutes later he ended up at the beach, how, he didn't know. Ranbir got out of his car and walked towards the shore, thoughts racing through his mind; all thoughts of Kanya.
For a while the only thing on his mind had been Kanya, when he was at work her face was plastered all over his computer, at home she was there to tempt him, she had not even spared his dreams. For the first time in his life a girl had taken over every minute of his life. He didn't know why he couldn't stop himself from having those feelings for Kanya; he had no power over his heart. He didn't know when he fell in love with Kanya but he had. As they say, you cannot control who you fall in love with. Ranbir had even begun to think that maybe, just maybe, things could work out for him and Kanya. Like an idiot, he actually believed that Kanya could love him too.
Right now he had hate, jealousy, anger and sadness all running through his veins at the same time. He hadn't done anything, someone else had done it to him, yet he was the one at the beach drowning in loneliness and frustration. This is why he had stayed away from girls and stayed away from love.
Ranbir still remembered how hard it was for his mother to lose his father. Everyone knew that Ranbir's dad, Sanjay Nanda, was dead. They all knew that he had died in an accident, which they thought had happened while on a business trip in Paris. Only his mother and grandmother knew what the real reason was that Sanjay was in Paris. No one knew that Ranbir knew, because he had witnessed the conversation from under his mother's dressing table.
It was early one evening, and Ranbir had been playing hide-and-seek with Aditya and Siddhart. He knew the best place to hide, under his mom's dressing table, no one would find him there. Before Ranbir could get out or be found, his parents came in yelling at the top of their lungs.
As the conversation progressed, Ranbir found out things about his father he had never dreamed of. Apparently Sanjay was going on a business trip to Paris for the next two months, but he wasn't going alone, he was going with Sonya, his assistant. Sanjay told Malika that their marriage was over because he loved Sonya. Sonya and he would remain in Paris while his divorce with Malika was finalized, because he just couldn't be held down by a wife and child anymore. As Sanjay left Ranbir watched his mother, his strong and independent mother beg her husband not to leave her; however, Sanjay turned a deaf ear to her pleading.
Ranbir watched his mother cry herself to sleep every night from then on, he watched her retreat into a shell that she still wasn't fully out of, he watched his mother become weak and lonely. His mother had loved his father with her whole hear and soul therefore, he watched his mother be destroyed in love.
Sanjay's new found happiness didn't last too long. While in Paris with his new girlfriend, he was involved in a drunken accident. He had been drinking that night at a party and decided to get behind the wheel, the end result was him crashing head on with a bus. His father's car was smashed under the wheels of the bus, dying instantly on the spot.
His mother was never the same, that is why he fought so hard to keep love out of his life. He refused to allow someone to have that kind of power over him. As hard as he had tried, he failed, because he ended up giving his heart, his whole heart, to Kanya Nanda…his wife. He would do anything to keep her happy, he would take on the whole world for her, he would die for her…all for the woman he loved.
Ranbir got back into the car an hour later, planning on calling his brother so they could go out; he wasn't ready to go face Chunnu and Kanya. HE grabbed his phone but saw that the battery was totally shot. Once he was in the car he had to do something to kill the silence. Having nothing better to do he turned on the radio. The RJ had announced a song that was for all the people out there in love but hadn't told the people they loved yet.

As the song came on, Ranbir cursed his luck. He wanted to change the song, he didn't think he could take it, but for some reason, he just couldn't change the station, or even turn off the radio. The song was just intoxicating him.

The song and the lyrics reminded him of Kanya. His mind flashed with images of Kanya, from their wedding day to their honeymoon, from their first meeting to the first time the smiled at each other, from the first time he had held her to the first time he had really seen how beautiful she was.

Suddenly, Kanya's thoughts were replaced with those of Chunnu and Kanya. He saw them dancing at holi, he saw Chunnu's hands all over her, he saw Kanya all over him. He saw her smiling and laughing with him, he saw her worrying and taking care of him. He saw so many things, that he didn't see the truck coming directly at him. Ranbir had hit the brakes and swerved the car but it was too late, he slammed head on into a concrete wall at a construction site.

Kanya sat outside the hospital thinking only one thing, what happened in that car? Had he crashed on purpose? If he hadn't, what was distracting him that caused the accident?
