Thank you everyone for the love and interest in the prologue. Here’s presenting Chapter 1. At the outset, I want to make it clear that I have zero knowledge of the technicalities and legalities mentioned here, so be ready for some, hopefully not too strenuous, leaps of faith when it comes to the storyline and it’s potential loopholes.

Chapter 1: Jab koi baath bigad jaaye

“Aise kaise ho saktha hai?” Shiva yelled. Gaumbi pressed the bridge of his nose with his fingers. Suman, Dhara and Rishita looked shocked as Dev poured over the documents. Krish stood to a side, visibly shaken.

“Mujhe nahi patha, Shiva. Agar hum mein se kisiko bhi iske baare mein zara si bhi bhanak hoti to hum kuch tho karta.. patha tho lagathe par kisi ko kuch patha hi nahi tha. Warna tumhe lagta hai hum yeh hone deta?” Gaumbi asked. “Par Gaumbi.. yeh kaise.. Matlab..” Dev tossed the papers frustrated and Rishita picked them up to look over them. Suman looked at her expectantly and she nodded her head that it was all true and Suman started to cry.

“Aisa nahi ho saktha! Main aisa hone hi nahi doonga!” Shiva said angrily, snatching the papers from Rishita and walking out the door.

He’d visited every lawyer, gone to every police station, talked to everyone with even the remotest political connection in all of Somnath but he had no luck. He sat by the steps of the Mandir contemplating what he could do. He felt so helpless and lost. It’d been a constant feeling since the day he’d lost her. Maybe she’d taken away whatever little good fortune he had in life with her. Or maybe she had been the good fortune in his life who he had insulted and pushed away. Or maybe this was his punishment for what he’d done to her, no matter his intentions.

When a dejected Shiva returned home later that night, the gravity of the situation bore down on every member of the Pandya family. “Kab?” Suman asked, finally. “Shayad kal,” Shiva replied. As Suman broke down in sobs, the entire family huddled up near her. It was going to be a long night in Pandya Niwas.

No one in Pandya Niwas slept that night. But when morning dawned, Dhara quickly got Tara ready and asked Shiva to drop her to school. “Humme kuch na kuch tho sochna hoga. Kahan jaayenge? Kya karenge?” Krish spoke up. “Kahan jaayenge ka kya matlab? Jo hoga dekha jaayega,” Shiva said as he placed Tara on his bike. “Aaj barah baje ka time bola hai. Krish, Dev.. main chahta hoon tum dono bhi Shiva aur mere saath ho uss waqt. Saath honge tho kisi na kisi tarah sambhal paayenge,” Gaumbi said. The brothers nodded solemnly before Shiva left with Tara.

“Patha nahi ghar ki khushiyon ko kiski nazar lag gayi hai. Shayad Raavi ki hi baddua lagi hai. Hasti khelti bachchi ko byaah kar laaya aur phir.. Baba Somnath shayad humme uski aansuon ki hi saza de rahe hain,” Suman commented.

Over the years, just like Shiva, every member of the Pandya family had revisited and reevaluated every single interaction of theirs with Raavi and had realized that the responsibility of the failure of Shiva’s and Raavi’s marriage fell on all of them. Forcing together two people and just assuming they would fall in love eventually had been a grave mistake. Just because Raavi had always been a part of their lives, they’d taken her for granted. She knew Shiva, so she was expected to put up with his angry outbursts and bad behavior. She always wanted to be a Pandya bahu so she was expected to make whatever compromise and sacrifice that required without any complaints. They had all wronged her one way or the other and in the past five years, they’d all suffered for it. But it looked like their suffering hadn’t ended just yet.

At 12 noon sharp, a convoy of government and police vehicles lined up in the street in front of Pandya Store. A lawyer, some government officials and a bunch of police officials stepped out of the convoy of vehicles. The entire Pandya family was present at the store. “Mr. Gautam Pandya?” The lawyer called out and Gautam stepped forward, “Ji, main hoon.” “This is the notice issued through the Bank of India. You have defaulted on your loan against Pandya Store and the Bank is now claiming ownership of the store. Please review these papers and you and your brothers have to sign on them so we can seal the store,” the lawyer said, handing over the legal documents to Gautam.

“Vakeel sahab, I’d spoken to the previous bank manager and he’d agreed to give us some time. It was based on a mutual understanding. He knew us for so long. We are not criminals,” Gaumbi tried to explain. “Dekhiye Mr. Pandya, we’ve searched through all our records but there is no documented evidence that what you are saying is true. In that event, we have no other option but to pursue this legal route,” the new bank manager stepped up and explained. “Sir, but you can’t just swoop in and take our shop away like this!” Dev protested, “you should give us some time to prepare a counter, or to pay up the defaulted amount!” “You have a 30 day period starting today to remit the defaulted amount and interest along with the legal expenses the bank had to incur. And if you don’t, then the bank will have to auction this property,” the lawyer explained. “That’s a huge amount!” Gaumbi exclaimed, “we are normal middle class people. How do you expect us to shell out such a huge sum at such short notice? Please try to understand. This store is our Papa and Mumma’s dream! You can’t pull the shutters on it like this!” “I understand your emotions, Mr. Pandya. But banking and business do not run on emotions, I’m sorry,” the bank manager said.

“What if we refuse to sign these papers?” Shiva finally spoke. “If we haven’t accepted this notice, there is no way you can hold us to it.” “Mr. Shiva, we have enough and more of official and unofficial witnesses here to still proceed with shutting the shop. And, if you try to resist, we will have to arrest you,” a policeman spoke up. The vein on the side of his head throbbed and Shiva felt anger erupt within him.

Gaumbi placed a hand on Shiva’s shoulder, sensing the anger waiting to explode forth and shook his head. They did not have a way out right now but that didn’t mean there was no way out at all. He signed the papers and passed them to his brothers to sign. The officials went in and sealed the store shut. As they were heading back to their vehicles, one of the other bank officials pulled Gaumbi aside.

“Maine patha lagaya hai, Gaumbi. The bank is moving so quickly on this because they are trying to strike a deal with this MNC that wants to build a mall here. Apparently, they are specifically interested in this location where Pandya store is. The new bank manager is under a lot of pressure to somehow crack this deal and get their account,” he whispered to Gaumbi.

Gaumbi wasn’t sure what to make of the information. What were the chances that some powerhouse in an MNC would be interested in a small store in Somnath? It had to be some weird stroke of really bad luck, he thought as he thanked the officer for the information and headed back to his brothers.

But he was wrong.
