Chapter 1 Paneer and Prudence
Shikha Purohit chopped the coriander swiftly… “khat khatkhat khat…. The knife tapped against the cutting board. Her husband slowly turned the page on Navbharat times. Two half read books sat on the old mango wood coffee table
The blazing Jaipur heat beat down on the kitchen window, and it was only 8 AM.
“Ek aur chai milegi?”
“Nahi… aaj to nahi” she said shaking her head wiping herbrow
“Main kuch karwaaoon?”
“Nahi, shaam ko aapka akhbaar ka imtehaan hai number laayenpoorey aap” she yelled over the exhaust
Sharad laughed at her mockery
He read and read and read some more… when ever he was home.He worked as a sound engineer (by training) at Akashvani Jaipur.
They had 4 children… ALL daughters
Payal Prakriti Pooja and Punita
And he had aging parents
“Shaam ko kaun si subzi laayen?” he enquired
“Phool gobi laayen 3 kilo, aur matar 2 kilo” she mocked again
He laughed not taking offence
The winter vegetables in Jaipur were priced around Rs.300 akilo during summer
“Paneer aur seb bhi le lete hain do do kilo” he laughed
She pulled the weight off the cooker, it scowled and cursed andspit steam she shook her hand cursing and buried it in the wet towel hidingunder her gas… briefly
“Ammaji kin azar ka chashma laayen” she yelled
He nodded
“Aur betiyon ke liye var” she mumbled
He was in the kitchen with his empty tea cup
“Saare Engineer challenge ya ek do doctor ya vilayet waalebhi”
“APNI tarah hon.. mahiney ki 20 taareeq taq jinki tankha khatam ho jaaye” she laughed😆
He tapped her head laughing
“Is tu tu main main mein hamari bus miss ho jaayegi”
Bauji groaned and growled in the living room divan
“Payal aayin neeche?” Shikha enquired
“Nahi” he shook his head
The house was independent but TINY and two floored
The first had 2 rooms and the ground had 3
Two of which were filled with Mr Sharad’s books
He inhaled them. Day and night noon or shine
Payal peeked “Ma hamare who baalon ke liye jo humne lep banaya who frig mein nahi hai” she scowled
She was absolutely gorgeous, light skinned as loved by most in India, curly hair, skinny and flawless.
“Kriti ko poochha? Unhoney saaf ki kal raat ko frig jab lite gayi” her mother said quickly rolling out rotis
The power cut last night had destroyed their sleep completely
KRITEEEEE Payal yelled
“Betaaa chillaao nahi” Shikha ordered
Sharad was leaning on the wall in the steaming kitchen reading some Bhairon Mandir flyer
He needed something to read every second
“KRITEEE” Payal screamed
Down came Prakriti, taller than payal, long silky hair in a careless braid nothing remarkable… except her mind
