Chapter Four
"Hello Khushi, I am Dr Khandelwal. How are you feeling right now?
Khushi looked upto Sumit. There was something about him that seemed familiar to her and even comforting. What that was .. she could not tell, but she felt a calm descend on her the moment she heard his voice. She replied to his question. "My head hurts... all because of that .. Laad Governor.. the last bit spoken with an extreme irritation in her voice.
"Laad Governor? Sumit looked at her quizzically.
"Your Mr Raizada she snorted.
Somehow, Sumit held back his smile.
"Ok, so Khushi, I will ask you some questions and then I can tell why you head hurts and then may be give you some medicine for it?- he spoke as if to a five-year-old.
Khushi nodded and Sumit began with his questions.
"Your name?
"Khushi Kumari Gupta.
"Where do you live?
"I used to live happily in Lucknow with my amma babuji but I had to come to this bad city due to that Rakshas
"Who all are there in your family?
"Amma, Babuji, Buaji and Jiji
"And?
"And .. what?
"Anyone else in the family? Like Jijaji?
At this, tears streamed from Khushi's eyes...she spoke softly.. "My Jiji's wedding broke because of me ".. and then she fell all silent.
Seeing her pensive mood, Sumit changed tracks and asked "Ok .. tell me what's the date today?
"24 June 2011
And Sumit knew exactly what had happened.
------
All members of Raizada family along with Buaji were crammed up into the doctor's room. Sumit studied the looks on everyone's face and could not but feel pity for this family. Everyone seemed extremely worried for Khushi.
Finally, after a prolonged, killing silence, he spoke "Mr Raizada, your wife has forgotten all events for roughly last 10 -11 months. She remembers only her Amma, Babuji, Buaji and Jiji. She has forgotten that she is married as I presume you got married only about a couple of months back. And as I understand, she thinks Mrs Raizada here (pointing to Payal) is still Ms Gupta. She obviously does not know anyone from your family and clearly hates you.
As he spoke, he noticed the change of expression on Arnav's face from worry to helplessness to shock... and with his last words ... to pain. Whatever it was, Mr Raizada did love his wife.
He continued, "So Mr Raizada, would you care to explain why Mrs Raizada thinks that you are responsible for her getting hurt? Did something happen in the past where she fell from a height?
Bang on ... that's what Sumit felt seeing the change in ASR's expressions. As if he was recollecting something and then regretting. But the man did not utter a word. He maintained his stony silence.
Khushi had forgotten all his family members. She remembered him though.. but how ? She was back to hating him. Hold on.. back to hating him.. where did that thought come from? Did he now believe that she loved him? Yes, he did. He loved her and she loved him. Not this amnesiac Khushi. But, his Khushi loved him. He would tell her he loved her. He would remind her of the day he had felt his heart beat for the first time. But then, she would be reminded of how he had forced her to wear skimpy clothes.. how he had made her stand in the rain in the parking lot. He would remind her of all the beautiful moments during Diwali preparations. But then, she would also remember how a broker her heart to a million pieces after almost kissing her. If he reminded her of the challenges during Akash and Payal's wedding, she would remember her own forced wedding. It seemed he could not remind her of a single moment of love without bringing with it a heap pf painful memories back to her..
After waiting for what seemed like eternity for Arnav to respond, Sumit signaled everyone else to leave the room. May be, he would open up in private.
When everyone else was gone, Sumit placed a hand on Arnav's shoulder and said " You should never hide things from your doctor. I need to know what Mrs Raizada is thinking right now. And I also need to know what she has forgotten. She has too many bodily injuries. Multiple fractures in her legs. She will need surgeries to correct all of that. But it is her mind that I am more concerned about. I need to know some details before I can guide you how to go about the treatment.
"I had let her fall from first floor of my office once. She used to work in my office.
If Sumit had not seen Arnav's lips moving, he would not have known that it was him who had spoken. It came out almost as whisper.
"Not only that. After that I made her life hell. And in that moment of vulnerability, the usually reticent ASR emptied his heart in front of this doctor. There was something about this doctor that made him feel very comforted.
Just then, the door was forced open and Garima barged in screaming "What happened to my daughter?
At that very moment, one look at her face and Dr Sumit completely froze.
