Just like before... and not
"I am your daughter I am not a guest" she denied vehemently
He didnt say a word he went into the kitchen to make one of his fabulous coffees
"Please keep the door locked Aanu. You are all the way in the back." she panicked
"I have nothing of value... to be stolen... anymore" he said emotionlessly
Her heart ached at the declaration
She reached for the empty davara and tumblers neatly lining a worn out wood shelf
"I will make it" he said softly
He made the coffee professionally and placed a frothy concotion in front of her on the pock marked concrete kitchen counter
She was almost afraid to take it and take a sip
She wasnt ready for the feelings that would evoke
He started cooking rice as usual rice that would make an offering to the Gods before he headed out for lunch prep at the restaurant
"You must take a bath and rest" he said pointedly disappriving of her following him to the restaurant
"I went to see Jayadev he wasnt there" "His room mate was mean to me" she whimpered
Prakash Shanbag sighed audibly
"A young man's heart is broken. You cannot expect him to be happy"
"I know... I knowww... I dont know why I did it" she shrieked
Crumbling into a emotional heap on the kitchen floor
He looked sad
"I was hoping to get us... I mean help you with the restaurant" she gasped
"I dont need help my child" he said confused
She got up and sprinted to the nylon spun chair and pulled the glossy folder out
"I made sure we can improve the restaurant" she smiled her eyes sparkling
she had the same look that she did when she brought hom e 1st rank report card
He was CRUSHED. He recognized that logo from earlier marketing material she had brought home
"You did what?" he asked in shocked
"Umm.. I am ashamed to say this now but I agreed to marry the man so we can save the restaurant"
It was hit turn to slump to the floor
"Krishnaaa" he gasped
"the restaurant did not need saving" he trembled
She nodded eyes closed tears flowing in rivulets
"Isha" "What have you done my child" "Isha" he was horrified
She sat by him sadly
"I want us not to worry about anything anymore"
"And you do something that has caused me permanent worry instead?" he asked stunned
"Aanu... give it a chance... please... give it"
He wouldnt even touch it
She leaned on the wall by the shrine and tried to comprehend what just happened
He was awfully quiet
He got up and went over and lit the lamp
He went into the kitchen and began rinsing the rice.
Everything was a bloody mess
"Can I stay here?" she walked into the kitchen to ask
"As his wife? yes you can" he cleared up that lil thing in between
She followed him to the restaurant, a few yards behind, after showering and changing and doing her pooja
Rao Anna greeted her joyously
Her face told him joy was a uninvited emotion at that time
"How are you?" he asked kindly
"I am the same" she smiled sadly
"No no... you are not the same. You are a wife now. You will be a mother too eventually." Rao Anna was positive and hopeful
She smiled with eyes full of tears
She wanted to say those things will never happen
She wanted to say the situation she was in was worse than college room mate arrangement
"You must have your favorite shrimp noodles today. I shall make it with extra sesame seeds" Rao Anna grinned
Her father worked as if he was automated
She helped out with cleaning the giant sink, chopping the garnish veggies onions coriander chillies etc
"Did you eat breakfast?" her father asked
She shook her head
Rao Anna made her eggs and asked Sumant to bring bread and toasted it on the tava for her
It was like old times when she would stay the night at the Univ at Lissie's room or Mrudula's and show up to eat at the restaurant in the morning..
She deluded herself that it was all good
A few hundred kilometers away a guy wasnt so sure how much he liked old times
He had broken up with his girlfriend 3 months ago, Mandira happened to like her quiet a bit
But the girlfriend did not want to be part of the never ending drama of the Narangs. She wanted a wealthy uncomplicated man
Ashvin wasnt it
She bailed, or they parted ways much to his chagrin
He wasnt a philanderer, he had gone without sex for almost a year, and sometimes for months
He unlike Chirag didnt look to "hook up" with whoever he met at bars.
He stood in his wife's balcony and sipped his coffee staring down
He had no idea where she was the door was open when he returned home from work last night and realized she was taking a trip
He scrolled through his phone book
He had many "friends"
He paused on many names
He wondered how complicated it would be trying to expalin this marriage arrangement and get past it and have sex with the friend
He hit the home button and shoved the phone into his pocket. He reassured himself that the only reason he was even thinking about the
unwanted wife was because he didnt have a girlfriend to think about.
No particular reason otherwise...
He turned and looked at the room, he looked at the folded foot stool slid between the protruding closet and wall
He imagined those legs again
Mile long... not as short as he originally thought she was
It was like she wasnt even there. Spotlessly clean.
Not a thing out of place
no personal effects
No scent
No semblance of a person.
No demands
No impositions
No needs.
Though all of those things were in his mind...
"what time are you coming in the Pune guy that bought the Juice Tree franchise wants to meet at 10" Chirag began without any pleasanteries
"Umm.. I will be there hopefully after 9"
There was a painful pause
"How is Trisha" Chirag caved
"I dont know" he said trying not to display his irritation
"Huh" he cackled cynically
"Shes not home" he said reluctantly swiftly "scrubbing" the sulk in his tone, too late... the K of the SULK couldnt be wiped fast enough
"Where did she go????" Chirag asked with concern
"I thought YOU would know" Ashvin said silkily... like a silk whiplash
