Part 1
There is a huge palace where a well-known courtesan named Kumud is living. She is known as Umrao to the world. Everyone is talking about her art, beauty, and innocence. Suddenly they hear a sweet, melodious but melancholy song from Umrao.
The song is
ek toote hue dil ki aawaaz mujhe kahi
sur jismein hai sab gum ke woh saaj mujhe kahiye
main kon hoon aur kyaa hoon kis ke liye zinda hoon
main khud bhi nahi samajhi woh raaj mujhe kahiye
An old man is passing by. He asked, "Such a sweet and melodious voice. I wonder who is this lady."
The other men said, "Don't you know? In the entire Faizabad, she is the well-known courtesan who entertains people. Everyone is dying to see her. You are a poet. No one other than you can know her better than you."
Mirza: I have heard a lot about her. I am getting to see her now. I want to meet her.
Umrao is now living with her servant Raisa who serves her day and night. She calls, "Raisa." She comes and said, "Yes, what I need to do now?"
Mirza knocks the door. Umrao's servant opens the door. He said,"I am Mirza Shahi Musraf. I want to meet Umrao Jaan."
Raisa: I will ask her & tell you.
She goes to Umrao & said, "A person named Mirza wants to meet you."
Umrao: That famous poet? Fine, He can come in.
Raisa goes to Mirza & said, "You can come in."
Mirza goes to Umrao's room & said, "Adaab"
Umrao: Adaab.Please be seated.
Mirza: Thanks. I would not have questioned you about your song but your voice has forced me to ask you this.
Umrao: I have learned all this from you. Whatever I am today, it is because of you.
Mirza: Don't say like that. Music is very much in your blood but what happened to you today? From where the pain has been associated with your voice?
Umrao: It is only the pain that gives birth to song & poet.
Mirza: Great. I want to hear that.
Umrao: Which story do you want to hear?
Mirza: You have seen life very closely. There cannot be any other story.
Umrao: What to say? You have taken away my identity.
Mirza laughs: What you said?
Umrao: In the whole world, my name is tarnished & you are ignorant about it.
Mirza: Splendid! But this only Umrao jaan can say.
Umrao: Who is Umrao & whose jaan I am? I was an ordinary girl from Faizabad. My name was Kumud. Even now I am Kumud.
Mirza: Kumud?
Kumud: Yes, you have heard right. I will tell you the same story of that innocent girl.
Flashback:
Kumud was living in a small house with her parents Vidyachatur Desai, Guniyal & brother Yash. They belonged to a poor family. Her father Vidyachatur Desai was running a small shop who worked for 18 hours in a day only to meet their daily needs. Kumud was living with her parents & brother blissfully.
Kumud was digging the mud. Yash comes there. He asked, "What are you searching?"
Kumud: I am searching for my ring. I lost it. Mom will beat me.
Yash & Kumud search for the ring. The two men Dilawar & his man comes & asks, "What are you doing here?"
Kumud: Nothing. Just like that.
Dilawar: Whose daughter are you?
Kumud: Obviously I am my dad's daughter.
Dilawar: Where is he?
Vidyachatur comes. He said, "Hi, I am here. So you are the enemy of my life?"
Dilawar: You have given the statement against me & I was behind the bars for 7 years but I was released before my term.
Vidyachatur: I wouldn't have told the truth. But I could not lie when I was asked to promise before the holy book.
Dilawar: Fine, you keep your policy. I will keep mine.
Vidyachatur goes home taking Yash & Kumud with him.
Dilawar bites the sugarcane
Dilawar: That scoundrel. He greeted me as if I have not come from jail but from the holy place.
The other man laughed.
Dilawar: His daughter is beautiful. I think she will come handy for me to take revenge.
Vidyachatur reaches home with his children.
He gives sweets to his children
Kumud: Dad, you are so nice. You give us sweets every day.
Vidyachatur: What a loving daughter you are. You make me proud of you & take the reward. God bless you.
He kisses her.
