PART 10

Lavanya slowly pushed open Shaurya's room door. She tip-toed in and took a seat beside him on his bed.

"What do you want?" Shaurya asked pretending read the book he held in hands.

"Shaw, you are my friend right?"

When Shaurya did not reply Lavanya continued. "Well I have fixed everything. I have an appointment with the princpal tomorrow he wants to meet me and go over a few things before he can give me admission. There is just one little thing, he wants to meet my husband as well. And well I was just wondering if you could..."


Shaurya slammed his book shut making Lavanya jump with fright. "Lavanya this is not a joke! This is no prank. If anything goes wrong you could be black-listed and you will never get admission anywhere. I say you give up the idea."

"Black-listed? Like that makes a difference to me. I am not getting an admission anywhere else, anyways."

"Lavanya you only applied to three colleges. There are many others you can apply to."

"I can't, no other college will accept with these marks and you know it. This is my chance Shaw, I really don't want to go back. Please help me out."

"Lavanya I would but everyone knows me in the city! I mean even if they don't know me, they know my dad, and if anything about me being married got out to the press, it would be a big deal. Right now, I need to stay on my dad's good books, if I want him to allow me to join the company. I can't help you. I hope you understand."

Shaurya and Lavanya were silent for a moment. Both understanding each other's predicament, but at the same time feeling helpless.

"I understand Shaw. It's just that you are my only friend. You are the only one who could help me. But if you can't it's okay. I'll figure something out." Disappointed, Lavanya left Shaurya's room. She had to think what she was to do tomorrow when she showed up at the principal's office without a husband.

"May I come in sir" Lavanya asked standing at the principal's door, clutching her file close to her chest, extremely anxious as to what would happen when she told the principal her "husband" couldn't make it.

The principal waved her in, as he continued to speak on the phone himself. Lavanya took a seat and patiently waited for him to end his conversation. She was glad she was getting some more time to relax and calm herself down.

"Sorry about that. Your husband didn't come?" The principal asked, looking towards the door. Was he hoping "a husband" would walk in, just like Lavanya was?

"Actually sir, ummm..." Lavanya stalled, unsure what lie to tell. What would sound authentic, genuine and make her husband seem real? He was sick? He was away on a buisness trip? Maybe he had just met an accident and was in the hospital? The principal was waiting for an answer she could stall no longer she had to give him a reply. "Sir he is... on a sick trip to accident hospital." O gosh what had she just uttered? Sick trip to accident hospital! This would not work out. The chair Lavanya sat on screeched as she pushed it back. Without another word Lavanya jumped up, turned her back to the principal and darted towards the door.

Before Lavanya's attmepts to dash out of the office could be successful, she was stopped, stopped by Shaurya. Who stood holding Lavanya in his arms.

"I am sorry sir. I think she is just a bit frazzled, because we just made a trip to visit a friend in the hospital who was in an accident." Shaurya lied, trying to cover up for what Lavanya had said earlier.

"Oh! It's okay. If you both want, we can arrange this meeting some other time, if Lavanya isn't up to it."

"No no, I am sure she will be fine. Right Lavanya?"

"Huh? Yah." Lavanya blinked once and then again as she continued to look at Shaurya, in a daze. Was he really there?

"Why don't you both have a seat and I will arrange for something cool for you to drink. I think Lavanya needs it." The principal left the room to ask his assitant to get them 3 cold soft drinks.

The moment the pricipal stepped out of his office Shaurya turned to Lavanya, who was still looking at him. "Lavanya, snap out of it. Stop looking at me like that, or else the principal will know something is up. Come on let's get through this."

Lavanya came back to her senses as Shaurya's words registered with her brain. "Sorry, sorry." Lavanya shut her eyes, shook her shoulders and head a bit. "Okay, I am ready bring it on!"

"Sick trip to the accident hospital huh?" Shaurya laughed.

"Shut up!" Lavanya retorted, a smile breaking out on her lips as well as she thought about how silly she must have sounded.
