PART 93
"Your wife, Siya has been kidnapped by Raghavan too, isn't it?"
Tara asked Ram after a long silence between the two. They all sat facing the sea on the boulders, having left Ruma and Sujit to their privacy. Ram gulped and looked down. Lakshman looked
at the lady in a short glimpse, thinking; why did se have to bring up the topic again? But the truth was, both of them had been thinking about the very same incident since what seemed like eternity.
Ram shrugged and spoke.
"Yes. That Raghavan has ruined many lives. We just happen to be two of them. But, how do you know? I mean, we have been incognito for a while now and.. "
Tara sensed the question in her voice and smiled a little. She said,
"You have remained incognito, but your presence hasn't. When Raghavan had come here, he told us that he would be doing something to destroy you. You, he specially mentioned. To me it sounded absurd and I was clueless then, but had I known or had the smallest clue, I would have come to help then and there itself. Who knows, maybe such a situation might have not arisen in the first place."
Ram was amused to see the emotion of care the woman had in her even in such a time of distress. She was similar to Siya, but then he thought, were all women of good heart meant to suffer such a tough life?
Pawan's phone rang at that odd hour.
He answered it and there were a few unexpected remarks from either side.
"But why?" Pawan asked.
"Have to Sir, please arrange everyone," the person at the other end answered.
"Ya that we will do, anything serious though?"
The call continued for a few seconds, but was dropped abruptly.
"What happened Pawan?" asked Ram.
Pawan turned with a confused expression on his face and sighed.
"The police had called. They said they are coming back."
"Coming Back?" exclaimed all of them together.
"Uh, Yes. Atleast thats what they said. Come, lets go back to where we were. The police will be coming there."
"I will stay here," said Tara.
All of them looked at her as they stood up and dusted themselves.
"Why Bhabi?" asked Pawan. "Are you not feeling well?"
"Nothing like that. I just, dont want to be in the presence of the police again. You can talk with them and tell me what happened later."
As all of them left her and walked ahead, Lakshman whispered in Ram's ears,
"Bhaiyya, I dont have a really good feeling about this."
"About what Lakshman?"
"The fact that the police are coming back. Did anything happen to Balve.."
Ram stopped in his tracks. Lakshman understood that he aroused a sense of fear in Ram, something which he intended in the least.
"No Bhaiyya I mean.."
Ram looked at him with shining eyes.
"I dont know Lakshman, but I just hope that all will be fine."
"Ofcourse Bhaiyya, lets move ahead."
The reached the scene and told Sujit and Ruma about the same, and the latter had the same response. After all, what could it be that made the Police come back again?
The sound of the sirens approached, but to their amusement, they heard two sirens. The path was cleared by the house guards, and entered the Police, and an ambulance.
Ram gulped at the very sight of the ambulance. Something was not right, out of order. The elements were disturbed.
As the sirens died down, the head of the police came down and lowered his cap in front of them.
"I am sorry to inform you but ... "
The ambulance doors opened and two male nurses brought out a stretcher, on which lay a body covered in white cloth. Stains of red were visible on the feet and the top.
The stretcher was placed between the Policeman and the others.
"Mr. Balveer, he.. Uh.." The choking and hesitation in the officer's voice made everything clear to everyone. Lakshman caught hold of Ram's shoulder tightly while Pawan kept catching looks at Sujit.
"He is no more."
It was as if in a sudden that Ram's senses gushed up and he felt each and every emotion largely. He heard things louder, he smelled skin and he saw, death. A death in which he had a part to play .
Sujit fell to the ground on his knees, and they bled. Ruma sat next to him and as she weeped silently and in still a state on confusion, she held onto his shoulders.
Pawan stared at the body, and then at the officer. He couldnt comprehend the situation.
"What?" he asked in a low tone.
Strong wind made the white cloth fly off from over the late Balveer's face. His skin was raisin dry and his mouth gaped open, a sight which did not permit any of them to stay still.
"When we took him to the hospital to get the bullet on his leg removed, " said the policeman , "He kept mumbling things about how he wished he had not done any
of this in his life and he also said that he was sorry to everyone here because he affected negatively your lives. In his last few minutes he told us to inform his son about the same but he wanted his last rites to be done by Mr. Sujit, because he thought that would give him a better afterlife. "
As everything else around them became silent, the waves roared and pulled and gushed all along. Sujit looked up at the sulky face and looked down again. It was too... unexpected for him. He never wanted to kill him, he wanted to just, teach him a lesson. But what had happened was ... Was that the right way to teach someone a moral?
"His death however, is a suicide," added the officer.
"A sui..suicide?" Ram's heart thumped even faster.
"Yes. When the nurses were not attending to him, he pulled off his supplies and pipes and one of them he did so sharply that .. His body couldnt bear the pain. Then he took a scalpel and, cut that ripped vein."
Ruma closed her eyes and her whole body shivered as she envisioned what the officer said. The very flow of blood in her body scared her.
Ram didnt know how to react to what he had heard. No, he still had a part in his death, or so he believed. Lakshman looked at Ram and gulped. Not fear, but a sense of helpless appeared on the strong man's face.
"Bhaiyya," he whispered, "Its not your fault. You heard right, he had been treated but committed suicide. Its not your fault. "
Ram didnt respond.
Pawan made up all the strength in himself and took the few steps forward. As he towered over the now dead once strong man, his heavy arms felt senseless and tears fell from his eyes in a wild stream. The man he once admired and respected, he lay dead in front of him. Everyone had to die, that Pawan knew very well, but this came as a shock to him.
"We have arranged everything, I think you should perform the last rites."
Pawan moved back and helped Sujit up.
"Come Sujit, we need to give him a happy afterlife."
Sujit stood up slowly and weeped. He hugged Pawan and sobbed.
"Pawan, I swear on God, I never wanted to hurt him. Never."
Pawan hugged him tight.
"Its okay brother I understand. But now, what has happened has happened. Come, let us complete the rites."
Sujit moved back and walked in small steps towards his brother's body. Ruma followed them.
"Bhaiyya!" he yelled and fell on Balveer's body. Sujit sobbed and cried and repented.
Ruma clasped onto the end of her dupatta and covered her mouth. To see Sujit like that was devastating for her and just when she thought now she would have everything settled, a new trouble struck her.
Sujit clasped Balveer's cold hand and said,
"Bhaiyya, I promise, what I have not been able to do in your presence, I will do now. You brought me up and gave me a life, and I will do everything to give you a good afterlife now. I will make sure that I do enough good work, so that my share of good deeds adds up to you."
Pawan placed his hand on Sujit's shoulder.
"Thats what Balveer Bhaiyya would have told you to do, Sujit. Im proud of you."
Lakshman saw what was happening in front of his eyes and it was difficult to comprehend on his part. It was because he was seeing a relationship of two brothers in front of his eyes, where he placed himself in Sujit's shoes and Ram in ... No, he could not even imagine having his brother in that state. His grip on Ram strengthened.
"Lakshman, come."
Lakshman looked at Ram who inturn stared into his eyes with a blank expression.
"Where Bhaiyya?"
As the others were engaged in paying their last respects to Balveer, Lakshman went behind Ram to where he was being taken.
They stood behind Ruma, who sat still, gazing into the yellow horizon as the sun rose.
Ram took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"Lakshman, we need to tell her of what has happened."
"But why us Bhaiyya?" Sujit can.. "
Ram opened his eyes, white and gleaming. It was if in a moment a new energy arose in him. An energy that told him he had to tell everything to Tara by himself. And to break such a news to someone, it took courage.
Lakshman could see the power Ram had in him. But he also understood that Ram was nervous. He was a human after all. A human with emotions.
"Bhaiyya, if you really want to, then only do so. Or else I can." Lakshman was ready to take the burden on him.
"No Lakshman. I will. I have to. It will rid me of my guilt."
"Guilt? Bhaiyya you do not have any fault. What was happened is destiny, fate. Its not your fault. He was meant to and that is what has happened. And maybe if you hadn't stopped him then, he could have taken an even more drastic step.."
"What could be more drastic Lakshman?!"
"Maybe he could have harmed anyone of us, or killed himself blaming any one of us. Would that not be worse?"
Ram didnt respond. Lakshmans words were having an effect on him.
"Its okay. Lets go to the lady now."
The two moved and just as they were about to call her,
"He's dead, isn't he?"
Ram and Lakshman stopped in their tracks and looked at each other. Though Lakshman was amused, Ram wasnt. He too had a foretelling when Dashrath had passed away. It was like a gale wind that constantly roamed in ones heart. It was a small, gut sense yet the one that turned out to be the strongest .
"His body has been brought and you need to be present for the last rites," said Ram.
She got up and looked at them. The woman looked pale and dry and visible marks of tears stained her face.
"I had the feeling. After all, I know him more than he ever did. I am not sad or regretful, but yes, I am worried about the fact as how Angad will react when he comes to know of this. He is in a flight now to here, We can't even tell him. But Im sure, he will understand the circumstances."
Before any of them could say anything, She left them and walked to where the others were, leaving both of them quite stunned.
"She is a really strong woman. I laud her," said Lakshman.
Ram kept moving ahead into the sea. Lakshman called him but he didnt listen. He too went with Ram.
After silence between the two, Ram spoke,
"Lakshman, I understand what you are saying. But tell me, why is his family being punished when he committed the sins?"
"Bhaiyya, I am no philosopher, but from what I see, he just got what he deserved. God punished him, you and I were a medium in it. His family is an intelligent one, they too have understood everything. Sujit is sad because of his sudden demise. I dont know why Bhaiyya but I am not so affected with the death of that man .."
"Its because we haven't known him as a good person Lakshman. Every man has a good side to him as well as a bad side."
"Even Raghavan?"
Ram bent down and ran his fingers through the cold water.
"Even him. Its just that his bad overpowers his good. Its our job to help him find that good side."
Lakshman giggled sarcastic-ally.
"Bhaiyya, just a few moments back you were worried about the fact that you will be involved in the death of Balveer. And now you suddenly changed?"
"Lakshman, just now I realised something very important. I was not scared because I hit him in the leg, but because there was a chance of you being caught up in it. And at this moment, I can't afford to lose anyone around me. You specially, because I need you for my mental support. "
A silence drifted between the two again.
"What else did you realise Bhaiyya?"
" That how sensitive life is. He died in a matter of a few hours, and that too since we saw him. Its precious, Lakshman. And there, Siya and Urmila are in what state of life we dont know. Lakshman, this incident has motivated me to work harder to push myself to find them. "
"But Bhaiyya, now that all this has happened, will Sujit be able to help us?"
"I will."
They turned as they heard Sujit behind them. And in the distance they could see Pawan and two others carrying Balveer's body and bringing it towards the beach.
"I will, Sir and Lakshman. I will each and everything so that I can better mankind and punish those who harm it."
Ram went ahead and placed his hand on Sujit's shoulder.
"Sujit, Im sure you will. I understand that you want to perform his last rites here?"
"Yes, sir. He used to love to come and sit here whenever he had time. I think that this would be the best place from where his soul would attain peace."
The pyre was lit and as Tara let the tears fall from the corners of her eye, Sujit weeped and bowed for one last time in front of the orange flames.
