We cannot love 100% of what we do for 10 or 20 years of the same job. Unless we choose to change jobs every 3 or so years, there is a definite monotony that creeps in. The prospect of "growth" or "higher pay" may be a good incentive to stay back even though we can do our jobs in our sleep by that point
Working for large organizations is very good and very bad at the same time. Very good because the risk is spread between 50,000 or 100k people, the benefits are great, the vacation is best in the industry, the pay is competitive etc... but try getting a PROMOTION or a LATERAL MOVE

A small company, u will be recognized sooner, u will have the excitement of doing a variety of roles from Mktg to HR to Finance if u show enough interest, but the pay probably sucks, but they will entrust you with amazing responsibilities if u can display the skill set
For someone that "Worshiped" her career like II this is truly sad
