Love was blossoming till Dutta obstructed it with his insecurities. I don't blame him, it will take him time to accept that his past has been well accepted by his family and his lady love. They accept him as he is and don't judge him. Even he should attempt to step out of the shadows of his past. Perhaps he can do that when his past is fully disclosed to him. Till then nakku will have to handle him with more sensitivity and caution not that she's lacking somewhere but these issues will crop up from time to time. It was amazing to see how little Krishna came to their rescue. He's a smart child. yes to your lovely views.. dutta is not a piece of pie for naku to eat.. he's a pie straight out of the oven... burns the mouth if.. naku isn't careful.. but you are right its about acceptability.. preferably with all his follies,,

So engagement date is fixed and I'm not surprised that it's on Friday. Lol. Loved the scene where nakku comes out with the tray of refreshments and dutta keeps looking at her. Well written update as always ohhh good you enjoyed.. sometimes Ifeel Rosie , the light in me is flickering now.. but then .. when I see loyal readers .. the light glows again..

Dutta had mentioned to Aye , Baji and Kala , that he didn't want over the top , ostentatious celebrations at the engagement ceremony. They had looked at his face and had wondered was he having his moments of withdrawing into his shell? Luckily Dutta took a step back and considered that it was not only his engagement that was being solemnized but Baji's as well too. Now as he strolled in his white kurta pyjama on to the study area before his room. He paused and looked down his balcony and smiled as he caught the torans over the door archways. The swaggered rows of orange and red marigolds that over from the ceiling all the way half way down to the floor. So he had accepted internal floral dcor and the use of perfumed candles, that filled the air with sweet gentle fragrance. Baji's desire to have an accentuated seating area for the couple with a backdrop too, was accepted by the family. Dutta's eyes trailed down to the divan covered with old gold embossed fabric surrounded by long stuffed cylindrical lean back cushions. But Aye Sahib was more concerned about the pandit being present at the ceremony. Kala came up his exclusive wooden steps. Warmly he took the morning tea tray she carried for him. Without a doubt she had mothered him as long as he could recall, how could have ever doubt her love for him?? he mused as he accepted the cup of tea from her. She sighed and on a lighter note commented

" well soon this cup of tea will be brought to you by Naku , and your Tai's role in your life wil be devalued" he rested his cup on the saucer and tilted his head to the side and replied with a challenge in his eyes

"so Tai, your insecurity starting to kick in again? to which she smilingly nodded and he continued

"your value in my life will never lessen Tai.. you and I go a long way back .. so long, that I was not even old enough to understand what memory meant? Naku has her own role and you have yours. I can only hope that I can pay due respect to both roles appropriately... any way Tai you needn't worry , Naku has a while before she can turn up here.." he said firmly.. but Kala perked up and wanted to know if Naku, Roops, and Krishna would be coming to dress up at Patil Nivas? Dutta fancied the idea and told Kala he would enquire if that was a possibility . Kala also was concerned about Naku and Roops attire and accessories etc.. Dutta by then became agitated and reiterated that all this could be found out if he phoned Naku. Kala also told him that Baji would bring his special clothes for him. to which he nodded quietly without enthusiasm which was so like her Dutta! in an unusual situation. Thus as soon as Kala left Dutta sat on his settee his long arms relaxed on his turquoise settee back. He threw his head back and mused as his narrowed semi closed eyes rested briefly. Till Naku didn't come and reside here with him permanently he would have to know about everything she did. He smiled and reached out for his phone and dialled her number. She answered right away as he had expected, for she knew full well if she didn't, he would become anxious. But he had to be contained in his manner.. before he went more into why? he should be confined in his attitude towards her her voice softened the slow temporary freeze in him

"Sahib.. you? had your brekkie? yes I have too ,before you ask? so what's happening over there? she asked keenly and Dutta ran his finger on his stubble chin.

"there's a waiting upon your arrival Naku.. a sweet pause the whole house, the flowers, the fragrance ,the glow of the candles and Dutta with his family all anticipates your arrival.." admits Dutta tenderly. Naku giggled and made him strong and proud in being loved by her. But then he was pressed to come to the point as discussed by his him and Kala ,however he mustn't sound overly keen , he reminded himself.

"Naku, tell me? should I come over to collect all three of you ,and you could get dressed up here in Patil Nivas..?what do you say? he asked eagerly. Naku was tempted at the idea but still felt she had to take into consideration Roops wishes and so she came clean with Dutta and explained gently, over the phone..

"Sahib.. don't get me wrong, but the night before, Roops and myself, discussed matters related to the forth coming engagement. Shahib, I am sure you appreciate that it will be a big day for Roops too.. She too has virtually no family left. Her only closest and existing link to her family is the Ram Sita hivali.. so we both decided unanimously that we would leave for that place which is like our maternal home.. so sahib will be going there..? Dutta accepted but was quick to lengthen his conversation with her and he asked.

"fine no problem Naku , I respect your decision. I think I am sensitive to how people feel for their family links.. now I think I'll send Baji over to pick you from gul bahar and drop you at Ram Sita hivali.. ummmh another thing Naku.. Tai wanted to know about yours and Roops attire and jewellery.. shall Tai and Aye Sahib send it for you both through Baji? you can get dressed at.. your own home.. he said morosely.. Naku and assured him with a little giggle.

"Sahib it's nice to know I am being missed by you.. the feeling is mutual with Naku too. But surely you don't need to be reminded. Tell me Sahib do you know what you are wearing? She asked bashfully over the phone. Dutta felt the left side of his heart with his palm and blinked his eyes silently and replied

" good Naku! I always want to be a permanently occupied resident of your heart, mind and soul! he chuckled and then added

"what am I going to be wearing? clothes Naku! I assure you! won't be otherwise... besides you know with me it's not what I wear , it's whether I'll be accepted by you? he teased

" Sahib you are already in my possession.. so the question of you not being accepted doesn't arise.. for now Naku is waiting to see you Sahib.. and tell you what, it's going to be a good day today." Naku said as she quietly thought about the moment when her Sahib would meet his mother.

"hummm, Naku , Dutta too is impatient about seeing you.. mind you .. your real beauty lies skin deep and what you wear is not really a true representation how pretty you really are.." he drawled and Naku blushed profusely and nearly died of unease.. she feel silent and Dutta read her quiet.. and whispered softly

"if you can't handle me Naku .. then go and prepare for coming to me", and before she could reply he accepted her unvoiced declaration of her love for him, he switched off the phone.. Baji barged in presented his Bhau's clothes in a pocket rested on his palms

"your highness !! your baby brother , your skivvy Baji! has brought your clothes for the occasion..! Dutta looked at his brothers face complete with a beaming dimpled smile.. Baji and his exuberance ! unmatched. But soberly Dutta moved his palm aside lazily towards his bed and said to Baji

" thanks , just leave it there and I suspect you have sorted your clothes..? Baji looked at Dutta oddly and checked with him

" you'll wear what I 'eve brought for you Bhau ,won't you? I brought it with much love for you.. he said with a wink and Dutta stood up and boxed Baji's arm and he swayed to one side

" oyeee! cut your drama Baji , will wear the clothes.. incidentally Baji you have to collect those three and drop them at some place Roops lives at.." without thinking Baji yelled

"bas don't tell me I know where that place is? Dutta looked at his face and raised an eye brow

"you do Baji?? ..how come? Baji realized he put his foot in his mouth and quickly covered it up with a wave to his palms

"I don't know Bhau? but you know me , I can locate any place on the face of Patil Vadi.." replied Baji sheepishly as he briskly slipped away from the room. Dutta's face became grim again and felt strangely pushed into a corner. It didn't take him too long to recall the moment ,that night when Tai and Baji were whispering and when he strolled by they kept quiet.. Dutta's brow furrowed slightly they were obviously hiding things from him. funny, but how easily they ignored the fact that he was an extra sensitive being.. the fostered one! not the same blood as those two. He nearly tripped against his centre table, he jerked and straightened himself up, then mused. There is no point in delving upon what's going on.. tackle it at a later date! he decided, and then went into the shower to get ready..

Baji turned up at gul bahar , according to the behest of his Bhau. Naku , Roops and Krishna were terribly excited especially Krishna . With an innocent smile he hoped that Baji would allow him to sit by him in the front seat of his land cruiser. Naku acted protectively and insisted he sat on the rear seat with her. Roops for once earned the pleasure of sitting by Baji in the passenger seat.. Baji revealed rather stupidly

"I nearly let cat out of the bag this morning with Dutta.. had to zip my mouth! Roops slapped his knee and shook her head and turned her neck back to Naku in the back seat and said as she shook her head with a reprimand

" Baji and his big mouth.. needs control" Naku laughed and brushed it aside with her hand

"yes but the main thing is that he stopped just in time.. don't you worry Baji not long from now ,just be patient" Krishna became restless and wished to know what they all spoke about ? but Naku chided him gently as she tapped his shoulder pressed against her

" Krishna if you say you're old enough then like the rest of us older folks you too need to wait as well!".but Krishna was smart and he caught on

"sounds like some kind of a surprise Tai? is it to do with Dutta Bhau? usually he's the one around whom everything revolves around in Patil Nivas.. and also in gul bahar for that matter! he laughed. Baji looked at the little smart packet from the rear mirror and smiled as he mused , lovable little man, always covered Baji up in his harmless little idiocies.

Finally they arrived at Ram Sita hivali and were greeted by mayi with open arms. For Krishna whom she met for the first time. She welcomed him with the same fervour she had displayed when she received Baji and Kala. Naku reminded her, he was the once homeless boy who has brought joy to Roops and her, ever since he moved in and became part of their family. As she kissed his forehead and tenderly looked in his young adolescent face, maayi smiled tenderly. Krishna felt her hands around his face , but his eyes studied this old woman's features.. her nose and those deep set eyes reminded him of someone close.. But Krishna dropped his hands and mused.. wishful thinking , probably an improbability.. Baji, took his leave as was anticipated, and warned them he would be back shortly to collect him. Kanta bai gathered her fold, and cried with joy. Today was the day when her happiness would be two fold. Naku put her arms around her lean shoulders and said lovingly as she presented her with a box of a white silken sari

"maayi, this is for you.. wear it as a token of love from your two daughters Roops and Naku.." and rather overcome with tears, Kanta bai replied as she grabbed their palms

"yes my two daughters! who care for me at a stage when normal elderly people require attention from their families.. I bless you two both Naku and Roops from the inner recesses of my heart." and she beckoned them from the courtyard into her room ..

On her bed lay a pair of folded pure silk sari's. One purple , with a broad old gold border ,and a green blouse. The other a scarlet red and yellow silk one complimented by a broad pure gold border. Naku and Roops were both speechless , clearly floored by maayi's sentiment that she felt for them. Maayi pointed to the sari's and explained without any hesitation

" Naku ,Roops, since you will be going from this house for your engagement and I hear you both chose to dress up here.Thus head from here to Patil Nivas , so I thought why not give you some clothes that I once wore when I was young.. many moons away! but if you don't accept the saris I will understand". Roops looked at Naku for reassurance regarding the clothes . Naku's eyes travelled to Bappa's statue for divine wisdom would it be right to accept these clothes? that were possibly bought from money that was earned by sinful actions. Krishna too stood in the room and yelled to his Tai, inadvertently!

"heyyy Tai! accept the saris! Maayi gives them in . with ,and nothing but love for you! he yelled and Naku smiled at Krishna and wondered .. somehow it seems , Bappa speaks through Krishna" Naku was thus inspired by Krishna to show her gratitude towards maayi..

" maayi.. both myself and Roops choose to come here as this place we consider as our family home.. our maternal home. to have a maternal figure like yourself present in our home.. is a heavenly boon forus two orphan girls! maayi.. anything bestowed upon us from you,is like a gift from the gods..as it's laced with your maternal love for us.. so yes we will wear for our engagement what our maayi has given us.." and there was aloud cheer from Krishna. maayi gathered him close to her bosom, pressed her lips on his head. she raised her head up and declared.. to the girls

"looks like god himself strolled from the streets and set up home in your shop,to guide you along the journey of life." Naku reminded Roops that Baji would be back shortly and they both grabbed their outfits and began to get ready for the special day.. Krishna though looked down and Naku.. presented him with a bag and an affectionate tousle to his hair

"now what did you think that your Tai would forget what you are going to wear.. my young prince! here take a look at this fancy kurta pyjama , waist coat! and get dressed too, will you? before Baji arrives.." so all drifted off and prepared and groomed themselves for the occasion..

It was last minute and Seema realized that she needed to go out to the shopping mall to buy herself an outfit. Nana Sahib was annoyed at her disorganization ,given the fact that she had known that the engagement ceremony was to be solemnized today. but Ravi calmed Nana Sahib and offered that he would be happy to drive Seema down to the nearest mall and help her purchase what she required. During the journey he tried several times ,to check her through the rear mirror. Turned on the local radio station which he noticed she didn't seem to mind.. Seema studied the back of his neatly groomed hair and mused . Ravi not such a bad man after all.. yes in status , he fell short compared to hers, but then she was not really obsessed with social standings, that was more a preoccupation with her esteemed father. Ravi suddenly asked

"must be a happy day for you too ma'am , Dutta Sahib getting engaged.. have you known him for long?

"all my life Ravi.. all my life.. He was , i guess still is my closet friend.. And as a friend , one has to support a friends happiness.. Nakusha is his joy.. And i too like all, back him all the way through" she confided to ravi. Although it was small talk , it was enough for ravi to ascertain that there stood a degree of bitterness in seema's tone. She clearly would have wanted a more deeper relationship with this dutta .. But then he has his heart set elsewhere. However what is all this to him.. For all he can say to himself is that the moment is right to draw seema towards himself, as she is on a rebound course. Seema was flattered when ravi walked with her patiently through the shops , suggested with profound interest what colour, style would suit her best. She eventually noticed that she bought a hyacinth coloured fish net lengha choli of his choice! Yes she enjoyed his attention, how he hung at her every word.. Showed impeccable manners ,at keeping her first and foremost in everything. She looked around at him as he looked at his phone and texted someone. Seema thought , ravi was quite handsome , in a rugged way , had a broad chest and nice big bold dark brown eyes.. Yes she quite fancied him!

Ravi read jhinger's text.." looks like you don't need the money? Ravi replied ," busy conning the girl.. these things take time.. be patient!..

"if you are ready let's go home ma'am.. Tavde Sahib must be getting ready to go to the engagement"

"listen Ravi , you don't have to call me ma'am.. Seema will do , everyone else calls me that , I'll make me happy if you call me that as well?, said Seema as she allowed his palm to take her bags from her palm.

"well.. Seema enjoyed the shopping spree.. more so since you managed to buy what you came looking for.. errhh remember.. I am at your service twenty four seven.. it's my job to wait upon you ,so you can call me any time night or day!" flirted Ravi as he decently smiled at her through the rear mirror.

The door to the hivali was knocked and all four collected their bits and bobs and came to the door. Baji was expected but instead it was Kaley a trusted BG of Patil Nivas..

"errn Naku Tai.. Baji Bhau couldn't make it ,he had things to do at Patil Nivas so he sent me instead.. Kala Tai has said you are to come with me.. she will receive you all.. "said Kaley and they all piled in the large land cruiser and headed for Patil Nivas. Naku squeezed maayi's hand and assured her that all will be fine ,and that all are with her..

Dutta came down dressed in his jade sherwani with a high colour , white pyjama and golden mojari on his feet.. Aye Sahib and Nana Sahib greeted him lovingly and felt his shoulder and blessed him abundantly. Dutta's eyes were posted on the door and irritated he turned to Baji who gambolled over dressed in a magenta sherwani pyjama..

"I thought I told you to go Baji and you're fluttering about like a moth here.! growled Dutta

"Bhau keep cool. I had to dress up to you know.. Kaley must be on his way.. " replied Baji then slipped away .. Nana Sahib walked over to Dutta and put his hand on his shoulder

"so you all ready my son.. to start your life's new innings? Dutta smiled shyly and hooded his eyes .. and just nodded silently . Dutta's eyes forever and more were fixed on the doors.. where on earth were they? no sense of punctuality! he mused , most vexed. Aye Sahib sensed his rage and beckoned him to sit beside pandit ji..

Kala stood outside and soon after Baji too joined her at the main entrance.. to receive the brides party.. Baji looked at Roops and gave her athumbs up. Kala told him to buzz off

" Baji you go inside and announce the arrival and get Bhau seated on the divan..if he fusses.. tell him it's my order! he 's not to come out, he's to sit and wait! Naku will come to him! and Baji does what he was asked or rather ordered to do so by his bolshie sister!

With the announcement done.. Nana stood on the stage next to seated and scowl faced Dutta.. where the hell are you Naku? he grinded inside. Aye Sahib stood next to Nana Sahib too with a platter that held the rings.. Dutta looked across to Baji who stood at the bottom of the small stage .. and shook his head in disappointment and in disgust rolled his eyes,and pointed to his wrist watch. Baji waved at him and bowed his head at him to be patient. Then suddenly Kala entered flanked by two Mahrashtarian sari clad young beauties .. the future daughter in laws of Patil Nivas..Naku dressed in a silken purple sari with a green blouse draped in typical maharashtrain style .. adorned with jasmine buds as jewellery in her ears, around her neck strewn into a choker necklace. Around her delicate wrists and finally as a nose nath.. Dutta's mouth feel apart as she took small steps towards him..to the stage...she epitomized beauty in the most purest and natural form , presented in the form of nature's most finest floral posy.. Baji too was gob smacked when he saw Roops dressed in the silken red sari and yellow blouse.. decked by red rose buds jewellery..

Krishna too by Naku took her hand and led her on to the stage, sat her down next to Dutta Bhau.. and then quickly ran and stood behin Naku! In a brief silence, Dutta who sat with his knees slightly apart, his arms rested on his knees, sided both his head and eyes , to Naku and mumbled..

" how long you take to get ready?took me only ten minutes .." Naku rubbed her hands nervously in her lap and he muttered

"what is it? won't eat you alive.. at least not yet.." Krishna tapped Naku on her shoulder from behind and pushed his head forward to the side of naku's head

"don't you worry Tai , Krishna is right behind you... Dutta turned his face forward and waited for the ceremony to begin.. and then Nana Sahib stood and spoke a few words to mark the occasion and wished well especially to Dutta who was the son of his most dearest friend.. all clapped.. The pandit said a word of prayer and then requested the exchange of rings.. Kala looked at Baji and then both disappeared towards the entrance .. and Dutta muttered to Naku on the stage..

" now what the hell are these two up to? can't even exchange rings without a delay! have a good mind to stand up and do it right now! lump the ceremony..! he rumbled as he entwined his fingers angrily.. Naku sided her head and whispered gently

"Sahib.. just wait.. wait for Naku's sake.." his fingers relaxed and he lowered his eyes..

Once he raised them again , Dutta was spellbound by the sight of a tall, lean, old woman in a white sari who walked with such authority on the white marble tiled floor of the lounge. The figure was flanked by Kala and Baji on either side. Dutta fascinated by her stood on the stage.. Kanta bai came closer and then stopped directly before the stage and stared into Dutta's eyes , tilted her head to the side.. As if to prove a point .. Dutta too tilted his head to the side and narrowed his deep set eyes back into this widow's deep set eyes.. Kanta bai knew then, this tall handsome man was her son, the joy of her womb, that she gave away but merciful Bappa had returned him to her..

All present looked around at each other questioningly and Kala knew she had to make some kind of a statement.

" sorry for this delay Dutta .. And everybody else..may I introduce this lady here.. Kanta bai.. she is my Aye Sahib's long lost sister"..aye Sahib looked across at kala from the stage most perplexed and Kala just calmly bowed her head to her mother. Somehow Aye Sahib knew that Kala wanted her to go along with what was being said, so she waited as Kala continued

" a while ago Baji and myself got a call from the missing persons agency and they disclosed kanta bai's identity.. we were called in and we confirmed that we knew of her, as our mother often mentioned she had lost her sister some twenty thirty years ago in some natural disaster.. we kept it as a surprise from all and thought today at Dutta and Baji's engagement we would welcome her and introduce her and above all give our mother a huge surprise" There was loud clapping and Dutta stared down at the women in white.. he was somehow drawn to her .. in a strange way. maybe , because she was Aye Sahib's sister , he already began to harbour some warmth towards her. He palmed his face and smiled .. so this was why Tai and Baji acted so weirdly and secretly towards me? Dutta turned to Aye Sahib and pointed to the platter. Aye Sahib went to the end of the stage and gave her hand to Kanta bai and invited her on the stage and for some unknown reason give her Dutta's ring...

Kanta bai took the ring, looked at Dutta with yearned tenderness and gave him the ring ,which he took.. and then turned and slipped on Naku's finger. Kala stood by Naku and handed her Dutta's ring which she slipped on his finger .. with hands that trembled..! both were clapped for and cheered and then each bowed down and received the blessings of there elders.. Dutta noticed Naku called the widow maayi.. and he too called her maayi and was taken aback when she hugged him close to her bosom.. Dutta's felt his heart leapt for joy at that moment.. how odd he thought.. as he pulled back and looked into her face.. she reminded him of someone...?? But soon enough him and Naku were moved as Baji and Roops ring exchange took place. Once theceremonies were over family and guests trickled over to the food and refreshment. Dutta, eyes looked for Naku and he wasn't in the least bit surprised to see that she floated about the family and guests serving food. Dutta went over to Seema and asked her to call Naku over to the side of the corridor which was a quiet, less crowded area. Seema did and Naku stood silently in the dimly lit corridor. She heard footsteps and turned and Dutta stood before her. Dressed in his fancy sherwani . A smirk on his stubble face and his arms crossed over his shoulders..

"Sahib you...? what if some one finds us here? she asked as she flattened her back against the wall.. he slowly moved to her and looked into her her green eyes..

"as if I would care Naku .. now you wear my ring over your finger, by the way why are you scared? relax.. I am not such an animal that you make me out to be? Naku shook her head nervously and cried in panic..

"Sahib it doesn't look nice, us standing here in the dark, away from all.. what if ? she pleaded . Dutta pulled her roughly by the shoulders, gathered her in the circles of his strudy arms and thumped her hard against his chest, looked down with contracted eyes into her green eyes on her shocked upturned face.. twitched his jaw and said in controlled rage

"only wanted to say you look stunning today my rose bud.. simply intoxicating".. and then he relaxed his arms around her, let go off her and reversed back his steps from whence he came from.. Naku somewhat felt she had upset him.. not today of all the days . Plus Kala Tai had put into place the staggered intake of maayi in Sahib's life.. Naku fixed her bun at the back of her head that he shook by his ferocious pull.. At her feet her gajra lay fallen by the impact she bent and reached for it then literally ran towards Dutta and grabbed his arm from the back..

"Sahib... she whispered and slowly stood before him.. he looked down at her upturned palm that held the gajra..

"humm what is it? she moved her palm higher and said in a hushed voice..

"won't you fix this back in my hair? since you made it fall in the first place" she said accusingly Dutta just decided to feast on her beauty embellished with fragrant jasmine buds.. Tenderly he perked up her chin on his folded finger and sniffed...

"you needed a jolt Naku to bring you down off your high horse.. see the shake up brought you before me.. to behold your beauty.. have to say your choice of jewellery is much better than what I was going to give you.. so my fragrant bud.. what would you like your Sahib to do for you? Naku pushed up her palm with the gajra and moved it under his defined nose.. he picked it with his pincer grip ..

"Fix this please Sahib," and she turned her back towards him slowly.. Dutta pinned it back in her hair.. then slowly placed his palms on the back of her shoulder leaned forward, buried his nose in her fragrant hair.. he moved his face near her ear and whispered

"thank you for fixing my life Naku..."
