Kala insisted she too needed to be picked up by Baji, on route to the registry official. Baji moaned as he'd have to come all the way to collect her and lose time. But Kala put her foot down as his older sibling. The truth was that she doubted his ability to sort things out meticulously. But Baji moaned as he did a U turn back to the house and collected his older sister. During the drive, Baji still in a bit of a sulk whinged

"look Tai, would help a little if you'd have a bit more faith in me. How am I supposed to grow up as it were, if you don't let me. Now look Tai I managed to get her name didn't I ?

"yes you did Baji.. but if I accompany you for the next bit, our job is likely to get done swiftly as the office would take into consideration that you have a female figure with you..try to understand. Besides, you'll have me beside you for further advice won't you ,baby brother? teased Kala but Baji was far from amused.

" ok. but tell me would you bend Dutta Bhau's elbow ,the way you do mine? probably not! as Dutta is usually the one to influence you, and also that he's always been in your good books.. isn't that so? Kala admitted

" yes Baji I'll feel maternal towards him.. still recall the day he was brought in, young, lost and crying his lungs out! took a liking towards him immediately. Aye Sahib too involved me in the tasks related to him, liking changing his soiled nappies.. dressing him. but most of all I loved keeping him entertained.. sang to him and played with him. Did you know Baji it didn't take him long to latch on to me during moments of Aye's absence.. he always wanted to belong. To be loved", Kala reflected and Baji too added on

" have to say Tai, Bhau has an amazing sense of adaptation.. he just seems to fit into a situation"

"Baji , I don't agree he does. I wouldn't blame him either if he cracks up and roars. Lets' face it! there was loads he didn't know about..his parentage.. no wonder he feels abandoned. People have a right to know about their parents, guardians . I know up till recently nothing was known.. but the fault Baj,i was with Aye Sahib ,she should have disclosed the truth to him about his mother. good !now she has ,and even better for me and you and for all our sakes to redeem our image by locating his mother" she propagated.

Baji pulled into the car park of the registry office. Inside it was a relief to note that it was a well organised, labelled and laid out public service place. Both brother and sister sat and waited for their turn to be called in by a peon. Kala was right, due to her presence , they were called in swiftly. Kala explained to the senior official in charge.

"it is imperative that we get information about this person" and she pushed a piece of paper with Dutta's mother's name and reference to the old barely functioning orphanage. The official looked down at the chit and asked

"so what is that you want to know about the person with this name? Kala nodded and spoke before Baji was going to with a degree of attitude.

" sir, we come from shriram patel's family..you must have heard about him? Kala dropped her family name for more serious attention.

" yes of course I do. Who wouldn't know him in this area . many still recall him fondly in connection with his public service works of philanthropy. But who may you be mz?." Kala looked at Baji to show that she would get the job done without the aid of bribery .. her babaa's name was worth more. With a proud smile she revealed

"I am his eldest daughter. now I would like you to note that my parents adopted a male orphan from the mentioned, now partly closed orphanage. You know him too , probably better than myself. Dutta Patil from the Patil Vadi security services" the man smiled with a nod and acknowledged

"of course I know Dutta Bhau.. have to say he has your father's streak of being a do gooder.. hard to believe he's not your father's son ma'am". Baji jumped in to mention something vital

"my Aye Sahib has a lot to do in the making of Dutta Bhau .. as you and the rest of Patil Vadi sees him as..

" yes sure, of course she reared and nurtured him, especially after you babaa's demise. But tell me now clearly, how can I help? what do you want to know?

"we would like to know if the named woman Kanta bai lives or not? and if so, her current registered address under.. if we are lucky" requested Kala .

The official tapped his key board and brought up the spread sheet of deaths recorded in the area. He typed in the name and date of birth of Kanta bai .. Kala held her breath as she looked at Baji.. both said a little prayer in their hearts for the woman to exist. The official scoured his eyes up and down the screen as alongside his fingers tapped , scrolled , and he read the show of information. Then he looked up from the computer and sided his face to Kala and Baji.

" well I am pleased to inform you that the named Kanta bai is not registered under the deaths data collection. Which goes to say , the woman is alive" he informed. Kala and Baji smiled at each other with great joy.. Kala toned down her enthusiasm , and responded.

"this is great news for our family sir! we would be even more obliged if you could locate her registered address.. you can't imagine what a huge favour you are doing to us".. the man nodded and added

" well it looks like the woman is a widow. her husband's name is not registered.. now let me see.. it looks like the gods have favoured your family ,ma'am.. for Kanta bai lives in Patil Vadi.. not far , but on the outskirts.. just before Ram nagar. make a note of the address.. Ram Sita hivali.. Patil Vadi" Kala and Baji noted the address and thanked the officer.. who in turn commented

"now seeing that she is a widow and by the sounds of her date of birth is not young.. I am doubly pleased that your benign family will involved in her life. For all we know , questions may be asked about her health and safety. Promise me ma'am, you will inform me about Kanta bai 's well being.. as I consider it as part of my duty as an ordinary citizen that we look out for the welfare of the vulnerable in our society".. Kala smiled and Baji shook hands with the officer and added..

" I am Baji rao.. kalavati Tai, and Dutta Bhau's youngest brother. I will ensure sir! that I will come and see you again to report on this woman's welfare.. you leave it with me. Thanks for working above the call of duty. It's good to see that society is in the good hands of the likes of you.." and with that both brother and sister left the registry office. Both beamed as they drove away from the registry office. Baji remarked with a big dimpled smile..

"Tai I am swelling with pride and bursting at the seams! shall we tell Dutta Bhau! he'll go mad with happiness! Kala didn't seem too keen and raised her palm

"no Baji ,not yet please.. let's meet the woman first.. check if she's the one we seek.. after all Baji we look for Dutta's mother.. not just any other woman. till we are not sure let's not be in haste. We don't want to raise false hopes in Dutta.. he doesn't deserve it. he'll understandably gear himself to meet his real mother.. and I 'd hate to imagine what he'll do if he realizes we all made a fool out of him. that's why not yet Baji.. wait for the right time.." insisted Kala. Baji knew Kala was right and till then he will offer thanks to Bappa and try his utmost in concealing such super news from Dutta..

As usual both father and daughter made it a point to meet over breakfast ,today was no exception. Nana asked Seema about the new BG. Seema gave a positive response which took loads of a fathers mind.

" so should I make him permanent then, Seema? speculated Nana . Seema looked at her father confused and shrugged her shoulders as she passed him his cup of tea.

"maybe I should seek Dutta's advice Seema? what do you think? Seema nodded and left the issue with her father, of making Ravi permanent or not? her father noticed her unusual quiet

"something on your mind Seema? are you not going to share it? Seema looked across the table at her father and replied rather abruptly

"did you know babaa , both Dutta and Baji have had their roka ceremonies done. did you know anything ?

" no must admit wasn't aware ! but at least you should have been informed Seema. you grew up with them" observed Nana clearly as he felt his dyed black moustaches

"it's fine babaa no issue , we can't be so petty. I have to say I did ask Dutta about it ? he said it wasn't planned as such.. he just happened to take Nakusha and Roops, the owners of the flower shop to meet Aye Sahib and she set him and Baji up with them. babaa I am sure you'll want us both to be over the moon about such great news"

"you are correct child. You know Seema when you give these little tips to your babaa .. I feel much encouraged ,that I must have brought you up properly ,at least a tiny bit." Seema got up from her place ,walked over to where her father sat and put her arms around his shoulders, and teased

"now are you blatantly fishing for complements? Babaa ? and suddenly the father daughter bonding session was interrupted by a phone call on the land line. Seema answered, it was Aye Sahib and Seema smiled at her father and mouthed out who it was?

Nana held the phone, and after usual apologies and acceptances Aye Sahib mentioned about the rokas and Nana mentioned with a laugh

"Aye Sahib the chattering magpie in my house has already given me the good news, please wish the boys well"..

"why thanks Nana Sahib, but the real reason I rang was to ask you to come over with Seema and set a date of the engagement ceremony. Since my husband is not around , it'll give me and my family immense pleasure if you as his best friend and closest confidante can be present as an elder" invited Aye Sahib.

"the pleasure is mine Aye Sahib.. had you not mentioned it ,I would have carried out those duties anyway.. shri Ram was the one and only friend I had ,and after his loss.. you and the children are my only link with him" replied Nana with a degree of sadness in his voice.

Once the call ended , Nana explained the outcome to Seema and confirmed that

"look child , friendship is such ,that you don't expect any recognition from the other side . As one knows deep down that the regard and recognition still remains ,whether expressed or not.." and Seema smiled nodded her head and decided she would tell both Naku and Dutta about what's cooking.. she rang Naku first and told her and asked for her reaction

"I am not sure Seema what you want me to say? Seema teased

"how about this is what I waited for all my life Naku!.. and that now it's finally happening ,once the date is decided" but Naku giggled and Seema commented dryly

"gosh Naku ! you are the height of bashfulness! just a giggle will not do ,say something " insisted Seema but soon gave up as Naku was unable to add anything more. With a twinkle in her eyes Seema then rang up Dutta

" yes it's me, your flying messenger, Dutta! wait till you find out the brilliant news I bear for you" she yelled over the phone

"look Seema you've as usual disturbed me in the middle of my work.. so whatever it is better be good! speak up then !haven't got all day long to sit at the phone!

"Dutta! Aye Sahib rang babba and called us over to your house to set a date for yours and Baji's engagement! and secondly ,I just rang Naku and asked for her reaction and you'll never guess she said?

" ayeee . I have a rough idea Seema.. she said nothing.. only gave a giggle..am I right? Seema screamed at Dutta's reply and threw her head back and laughed

"unbelievable Dutta ! how easily you knew her answer!

"Seema, I may not have known her long enough ..but seem to know her now.. since a life time! Dutta replied curtly

"it feels right to marry her Dutta , isn't it? asked Seema and Dutta twirled the paper weight around with his fingers.

"humm ,it does Seema.. I think she understands me and I her, however whether this understanding progresses into a lasting companionship ,only time shall tell?

Dutta replied and Seema rolled her eyes

"oh why do you have to sound like an boring old fogey? Dutta.. honestly me worried you'll bore Naku to death" carped Seema

"now it's you miss gossip maker! don't bore me and go out somewhere? incidentally how is the well presented dude ,Ravindra? Seema replied

"he's fine , he keeps to himself and I too mine.. and yes I might just pop over to the local shops " and the call ended..

Well reflected Dutta ,there's only one way to find out what Naku thinks ..about the wheels rolling on in their relationship . Ring the girl herself! he let it ring for a bit, cast an eye on his watch. Twenty past one, she must be on her lunch break. She answered with that sweet smile.. of course she knew it was me.. my name popped up.. I wonder what it is ?Dutta or Sahib.. he palmed his stubble face as he walked with his hands free phone and pressed the urn for a ready mixed cup of tea

"Sahib ,you? have you eaten yet? dutta lied and said

"yep ate a while ago and you? are you in the middle of eating?.. she giggled and enticed him,

" come Sahib, it's Raj maa and boiled rice, tasty... It's ,just the way you like it medium spice.." Dutta smiled and replied

"stop tempting me Naku.. I won't be coming, but yes, want you to pack a takeway for me will collect it on my way home" she giggled and that brought him to the reason he phoned her

"Naku.. tell me how do you feel now that our engagement date is going to be set? He asked her clearly..yes she giggled he could hear her and he rumbled

"stop your silly giggling Naku! this is serious you can't snigger everything away! tell me are you happy or not? Naku sensed his fury and thought it best to put an end to her nervous muffled laugh..

"yes Sahib, Naku is happy because it's what both of us wanted.. it wasn't a sudden decision. it was coming , I think , at least from me the day I met you. could sense that you wanted to shield me from the world. you were a man who lauded my efforts of starting my business and running it on a daily basis. You felt something for me Sahib.. that made you drop Krishna at my place. Naku felt you trusted her.. so Sahib after all this ,it gives me and my Bappa joy that we are going to be formally connected to each other" Dutta heard each word and his heart rang out with the music of love.. and he cleared his throat and said..

"Naku you make me feel so wanted.. my loneliness seems to run from me and wherever I look, around me ,above me, below me ,ahead and back of me I see you.. Naku I wanted to tell you that I love you dearly.. But then it became a bit too much for both of them ,as silence descended on them.. Dutta did want her to stay on the phone ,he wished to sense her presence. So he recalled Seema words that he bores Naku..

"Naku.. another thing.. I wanted to ask you? do I bore you? Naku was quick to defend herself and briskly replied

"why Sahib, do I bore you? Dutta shook his head and added

"don't you try to act smart with me girl! I asked first ,do you find me and my ways boring speak to me? Seema reckons I 'll probably bore you to death! so come answer me quickly!

"no Sahib you don't bore me , and even if we talk nonsense , what matters is we enjoy each other's company.. " she replied with sincerity and Dutta added fervently from the other side

"and we desire to know more about each other and look for moments when we can make connections.. isn't that true Naku? he asked

" hummm Sahib, it's amazing how in such little a time, we have managed to find lots about each other.. as for me, I feel I know you well enough "

"Naku that's what I fear.. that knowing everything about me, might bore you ,since you 'll realize eventually that there nothing more to grasp about me", Naku shook her head at the other end and assured him

"no Sahib.. our personalities change and adapt according to our circumstances.. giving us more opportunities to learn more about how we cope with life.. how we support each other, for better or for worse.. as people say" Dutta tilted his head to one side and replied

" Naku , if you ask me ,I think you are ready to set up your own home.." Naku replied

"how do you mean Sahib? and Dutta shook his head and rolled his eyes ,and responded

" I mean take charge of my life and my home.." Naku teased him

" and how would that be Sahib? and Dutta growled angrily

"by making a bloody pickle out of me!.. marry me! you stupid girl how else? , Naku sniggered

"that I thought, I was! marrying you! why the doubt sahib? don't tell me you are having second thoughts?

" oh be quiet Naku! I will be having second thoughts and drop you as off as a girl who spins her husband around!.. don't be such a bore! , Naku laughed at the other end and chirped away..

" Sahib now you tell Seema! that you are not the one who is a boring! it's Naku.. who is a bore! how about that Sahib?

"the answer ..to your question ,Dutta can give you appropriately ,only after our formal engagement.. in the meanwhile , you speculate about the answer.. my petal".. Naku couldn't believe her ears he called her petal..

" what did you say Sahib? and Dutta stiffened his neck ,narrowed his eyes and replied..

" I said settle!.. now Naku.. I have to leave" and the dial tone sounded. Naku smiled secretly

"I heard you loud and clear Sahib .. you can rhyme the word .. Naku knows you called her petal!

Kala 's phone rang as she travelled with Baji back from the registry office. It was Aye Sahib..

"Kala, I wanted to say ,that should you and Baji pass by the flower shop , put in an order for some fresh flowers for tomorrow . I have called over Nana Sahib to discuss the possible engagement dates ." Baji too could hear as Kala put her phone on loud speaker. And he added in too

"will do Aye Sahib! just entered that territory..". Baji parked in front of the flower shop ,and both brother and sister got out. Baji stepped back from the door as he saw the post man , dropping in letters through the built in post slot in the front door. Baji pushed open the door as the alert bell rang and announced an entry into the shop!. Automatically he bent and picked up the post at his feet! .. few free product advertisements! ..and a letter with bold red words on the envelope.." redirected.." it was addressed to both Nakusha and Roops but it was the address that made him jump as he read.. "Ram Sita hivali"!he froze as he passed kaka the envelope..

" Tai look at this.. and Kala held the envelope.. as both Roops and Naku came forward and reached out for their post.. Naku turned to Roops ,smiled and commented

"such a nice man, our post man is.. he knows we work here ,stay at the Gul bahar address mostly.. so he forwards our mail to us.. come in Kala Tai , Baji... and she turned to Krishna at the till.. who looked very official as he waved at the visitors

"thing is love to join you all! but have to be in charge of the most important job.. collecting the money and giving back the change! sharpening my mathematical computational skills! he winked at Baji.. as he scooped up the money from the serving counter..

Kala put her arm around both the girls and asked

"is there somewhere private where we can talk..? Naku looked worried and was about to put the post aside ,when Kala pointed out

"bring the post Naku.. it's about that both me and Baji need to talk to you" about..as the two girls went ahead to unlock the small stock room. Baji took Kala to the side and asked hoarsely

"Tai is it safe to take these two into confidence? I am not sure about it.. Kala gave Baji a meaningful look and appealed

"look Baji this is not major conspiracy.. Dutta is not a controversial man . I doubt it if he has many foes.. except for those he pounces upon in the line of duty! Besides these two girls keep to themselves.. we want information from them.. so it's only right that they need to know why it's important.. Baji, the only person they need to hide it from is Dutta himself! if we tell them not to say anything ,I am sure they won't.. and one more thing Baji... Roops and Naku are now family.." finished Kala and moved towards the little stock room.. with a smile on her face..

"ahhh yes! the secret room, where the walls don't listen .."she laughed nervously and then reached out and took the envelope from Naku..

"so I take it girls ,this too is your additional address..? Naku explained the history behind that property and the reasons for the said address as their original home ,as opposed to the shop and flat which is a business concern.." Kala and Baji both nodded and Kala asked ,the obvious question..

" is there any one else living at the premises in your absence? Naku informed

" yes Kala Tai.. it's an old widow who stays there ,acts as a caretaker and during the day she gives tuition to poor deprived children who cannot make it to school due to financial constraints .."Kala looked at Baji approvingly ,as useful information gathering was happening with regards to important lady..

" do you know her name Naku?.. and Naku shook her head

"no Tai! she never told us , she just wants to be called maayi.. everyone calls her that.. she is a nice old lady , very active and makes herself mobile in every possible way.. people in the area look up to her.."

Kala nodded and then after she cleared her throat she disclosed

"Naku ,Roops, what I am about to divulge before you is highly confidential.. especially from Dutta.. and Naku's eyes sparkled as she grabbed Kala's hand and exclaimed..

" she is Sahib's mother ! isn't that right Kala Tai! oohhh Bappa! how great are your mercies and she almost fell to her knees and chanted.. Ganpati Bappa moriya!

Kala raised her up with tears in her own eyes too.. as she hugged Naku..

" yes Naku.. she might be , but I have to meet her in person to ensure that she is the right person.. only then can Dutta be told.. Naku nodded and grabbed Roops hand and turned to her ..

" we must arrange to take Kala Tai over to maayi.. I wish It's true Roops! so think when can we do that? Baji suggested ,

"now look both of you don't need to take Tai.. Roops you stay back at the shop.. keep the business running as usual.. and Krishna will support you.." Roops agreed as did the rest of them.. and it was decided they would leave tomorrow..

The next day all hit the road and Naku directed Baji. Dryly he remarked

" Your house is quite a long way off Naku.. perfect for a long drive.. maybe I should suggest to Dutta Bhau about the perks of having a girl who lives at such a distance away.. " he teased and Kala to teased back

" yes Baji do suggest as I bet you see your own chance too! it's Roops address too! Baji laughed and then looked ahead to where Naku pointed

"take a left here Baji.. and stop beside that old red bricked building the one with masonry borders and a set of closed brown painted wooden windows on the edifice. Baji pulled his handbrake and Naku got out of the jeep followed by Kala.. Naku reached up for the iron latch cum knocker right above the chunky brown door.. Kala's heart pounded as Naku banged on the door .. she waited and turned her head to Kala .. children's voices and chants sounded from the inside courtyard, as they repeated the letters of the alphabet after a woman's voice.. both strong and clear..

"seems maayi is at home.. tell you what Tai you wait here while I explain to her..suggested Naku.. The door opened . A tall, thin lady, dressed in a white sari ,her pallu on her head, stood in the doorway.Her eyes expanded and her arms flew open as Naku dived into them for a bear hug! She pulled Naku in, as she arched her neck and noticed a stunning looking young woman who stood beside a black jeep. A young man sat behind the wheel talking to someone on the phone..

"who are these people Naku? some customers? why don't you call them inside..? suggested Kanta bai...to be continued .. Hamlet53 25.9.15
