ARSHI OS-DHEEJ
"Aisa mat karo Khushi ke saath, bachi hain woh" Shashidhar tried to make this arrey of women understand.
"Shashidhar, tum beech mein na hi bolon toh thik rahega ye prathaon ka mamla hai aur sarpench hone ke naate tum yeh swikar hona chahiye, aur abhi tumhare Khushi pe aayi toh kya hum puri parampara ko tak par rakh de." They said dragging a fiercely crying teenager girl in the middle of courtyard and unpinned his upper choli and made her face her back.
Shashidhar was zamindar of the village but with that he was tauji of this little girl who his dying brother left to him, Khushi. Though Shashi had his own children, 1 son who studied in foreign since ages so his everything became this girl whom he has bought in last 13 years, 6 year old Khushi survived the fire in haveli was last remaining progeny of Shashi's family. But here he was also helpless because even his wife felt it was right with all the elderly women of the society. He dejectly left for his room because he can't even see that but he was tied by traditions saying that it was necessary.
Just as Badi Tai was about to hit her with a hunter, they heard a loud voice saying "Ruko, aap ye kya anarth kar rahe hai" came running Anjali "Inta komal tan, himmat kaise huyi aap logon ki iss najuk tan par hunter chuvaane ki" As she hugged sobbing Khushi.
"O, Rajrani Anjali, purani parampara hai yeh, ki agar ek aurat ko uske pati ke sivaye koi aur dekh le toh use chabuk ka nishaan dena, jisse use agli baar ye yaad rahe ki use paraye mard se door rehna chahiye. Tum nahi jaanti ye najuk tan kehar dahata hai" said Badi Tai which was supported by all the women.
"Main nahi manati iss sab mein." She said straightening her ghooghat "Maaf kijiye, Tai, Khushi ab aapki beti nahi hai, humare yahan ki bahu hai. Shaadi ke samay hi ye ghar tyaag chuki hai, yahan par bas ye hamari amanat hai. So iske saath kaisa vyvhaar kiya jayenge ye hum nishit karenge. Livaane aaye hai hum Khushi ko, Agayaa dijiye. Khushi chalo utho hum abhi jaayege Mumbai."
"Saree badlo, Khushi, ye saree aur jewar pehan kar milo humse. Shashidhar babu agyaa dijiye hum apni amaanat lene aaye the aur aaj apko mukt karte hai humhari bahu ki datitvayoon se. HP gadi nikaliye hum aaj hi jayenge Mumbai aur haan aate aate Akash ko bhi lete aana." Said ever strong Anjali.
Anjali Singh Raizada was the chaudharani of neighbouring village plus his devar was married to Khushi. Her husband, Shyam Singh Raizada was influential man who was known for his king maker properties in state politics and was a big name in Maharastra in education business; she had two devar, elder one Arnav who was married to Khushi and younger imp Akash.
Khushi came down dressed in a biscuit coloured saree with a bright blue brocade blouse which was full sleeves and of koti pattern; the saree has gold-silver embroidery in borders. With that she had worn simple earring of single solitaire, with that her hairs were tied in a messy bun between which a thin line of sindoor can be seen and her tightly draped saree accumulated her thin yet curvy body, there hung a small chabi chala of silver . Just then Anjali gave her another amanat of their gharana, the mangalsutra. It was long yet sleek mangalsutra with red and green beads woven in between and diamond locket in between and she wore a simple neck piece three roses as penchanent. Whereas Anjali had worn a saree of pink which looked like pure kajeevaram in seedha palla from which she had even did a small ghooghat kept on her bun. She was wearing a simple mangalsutra which had same diamond work and was wearing a set of emerald with diamond. And her hands were filled with glass bangles matching the shade of tree green with lots of diamond bangles. In her waist was the famous chabi chala proving her status as chaudharani. Her maang was filled with thick streak of sindoor. Her forehead had a large maroon bindi. In her ears were big earrings of emerald.
She chided Akash as they picked him up from a mango orchard "Akash mana kiya tha na ki choti babhi se milne mat jaana, agar aaj hum samay pe nahi pahoochete jo iss masoom ke tan par us hunter ke nishaan ho jaate. Par aapko aaj tak kisi manani hai jo aap hamari sun lete. Ab Shyam hi aapse baat karenge." Anjali said caressing the huddled girl beside her. The innocent girl of 19 had seen enough to be scarred for 4 lives but now they will start a new life. Leaving all this and no more Dheej for Khushi to prove herself.
Today it had been enough she decided that now when their family or should say husbands lived in Mumbai for most of the year now they will also shift there only. So taking her remaining family i.e. her young devarani. They now left this place, this small village near Kolhapur.
Arnav Singh Raizada is a famous actor and musician in Mumbai. Though he had an arranged marriage to Khushi but he found his inspiration in that naive 16 year old when he was 19, he was beyond happy. But after that his frequent visits to Mumbai and his brother getting more involved with the international schooling business and his younger brother Akash studying in Mumbai made brothers stay most of the times in Mumbai. Anjali his bhabhi was a rock steady column that stayed in that village still but now she had just quoted that she is shifting to Mumbai with Khushi.
After years, he saw his wife in front of him; she looked same as earlier just grew a few more inches taller and was now full in her womanly curves. She was really his salvation, though he wanted to bring her here only but he was said that due to tradition he has to wait a few years before that so that the reason why he had to come Mumbai leaving her there. Though she smiled but her smile was like something that was subtle not as carefree it should be of a 19 year old girl.
That was even felt by Shyam so when even Anjali told what was about to happened in the village, instead of getting angry Shyam suggested why don't we get her admitted in a college or even better our college. Where she would do a diploma course in self grooming classes. This would give her a chance to see the world and it's also necessary that she should be taken out of the tragedies of her life because may be Shyam and his family had being modern but she had faced lots of regression in her maternal side. As firstly she was a girl so a lot people tried to suppress her. Plus after her parent's death a number of times she was blamed for the accident and after her marriage when Arnav shifted to Mumbai everybody again took matters wrongfully and said her in laws have not accepted her so they are avoiding, since then her life turned worse each day. It was just some occasional trips from Anjali that relieved her of these assaults. So next day at breakfast was the first side, Khushi saw a change in tradition, here Shyam sat on the one of centre chairs with Anjali in his right side. Eating together, and Arnav signalled her to sit with him and Akash in another end and instead of her serving them, they served her and made her learn use of cutlery.
It was when wrapping the breakfast, Shyam said "Khushi, gudiya humne aapke liye kuch decide kiya hai. Aap aaj se college jayengi Akash ke saath, aap wahan par Self grooming ka diploma ke saath saath journalism ki padhai karengi. Aur aaj se kyunki aap college jayenge aap ek nayi wardrobe kharendi kyunki aap saari pehen ke classes toh nahi kar sakti hai naa, so aap aaj hi Anjali ke saath jaa kar kuch jeans t-shirt aur accessories le aayega. Aur haan dariye nahi hum aapka admission humare hi college mein kara rahe hai toh koi bhi aapse misbehave nahi karega. Akash aap daily apni bhabhi ko apne saath le jayenge aur Khushi humare yahan sab ek doosre ko naam se hi bulate hain toh aap bhi Aisa hi kariyega." He then took a leave smiling and passing a credit card encouragely towards Khushi.
Akash was super excited to have another student in their family. He excitedly said "Khushi, we will daily go in my favourite sports car Z4" and Arnav also looked genuinely happy. He took her to the room and gave her two metallic cards in which his name was written bold capitals MR. ARNAV SINGH RAIZADA. He said "These are my credit cards. I would like that you spend only my money, munchkin" and kissed her forehead.
As she entered the class everybody was looking at her, not just because she was dressed differently as she was wearing a long skirt with a full sleeved top and a scarf plus her mangalsutra was hanging by with some bracelets worn in one hand and in other she had a large dialled watch. With that she even had a huge baggy leather poncho lying in one of her shoulders. But she was dropped in class by Stud of the college, Akash. She looked at him apphensively as he was to leave her "You are now on your own. This is your cellphone, Sandy gave it for you. My name is saved in the contacts" as he handed her a Nexus 6 in the hand. She smiled softly towards him "Aap hume lene aayenge na. Humme yahan Ajeeb lag raha hai." Akash gave her his dimpled smile reserved only for family and he said "See, Khushi I don't that much of Hindi but don't worry you are never alone, just give me a call"
The day was really apprehensive because here the culture was very different of that of her village. Here the people were highly competitive and girls were as opinionated as boys. Here everybody rated you by the brands you carry with ease. She didn't understand all this, she just knew that all she needed to do in her yesterdays shopping was to give that metallic card in which Arnav's name was written and she had everything billed. Her sister in law had been great help; she told her that she visited a number of times to Mumbai with Shyam. Here her bhabhi or as everybody called her, Anjali was much relaxed; today she was wearing a yellow chiffon saree with designer orange blouse.
She saw Shyam standing there in front of her class, she ran towards him and stood beside him, Shyam said "Gudiya, did you have nice day. Now let's meet the principal."
"Bhau, you here, could have called me your house?" said the man, Mohan Kapur a man in his 50s as they entered the cabin.
"Mohan Sir, this is my precious, Khushi, actually Arnav's wife. She would be joining the college so thought that I should let you both meet." Said Shyam signalling to the tiny girl sitting beside him. Mohan was shocked to the core that this young girl who may have turned adult just few weeks ago, ashy and docile girl is the wife of one of most extrovert and arrogant rock star. She, the rock star wife was hard to believe, she may have being dressed in westerns but she looked a girl who wears only Indians. Arnav was famous to be very arrogant though when he personally met him, he believed it is more about brand value to be maintained then personal arrogance and he found his love in a shy teenager girl. Love surely is weird. But he that moment only knew he was given a chance to groom the next generation of Raizadas and maybe the most important bond in their family.
"Khushi, your tiffin, and you should finish it." Said Anjali lovingly to her. Akash faked sadness "Everybody loves Khushi, no one love me."
"Oye, drama queen, I know you have many girl friends to see that you are adequately loved." Pulling his ears.
"Don't worry, Akash. We can always share " meekly said Khushi, it had being more than 3 months that she came here, now more comfortable with her new family and Mumbai. Though Arnav has not introduced her as his wife as it was better for her to stay away from limelight for some time as it is press is very judgemental about the celeb wives. But he did sneak her a number of dates, it was like they were living the dating phrase but instead of family they were hiding from world though paparazzi though was now in guessing that Arnav is dating someone traditional as they did break into some pictures but not very clear about the girl. So the media named her "Veiled Doll". She also started enjoying this life. They went for movies, shopping, picnics and dinners, sometimes as couple and number of times a family. She and Akash have become BFFs as they say in their hip college she has grown closer to Anjali and Shyam Bhau as she called them and this was her life. With Bhau she learnt to get involve in social work in politics and with Mohan's personal grooming she turned into a fully blossomed pink rose.
The prom was enjoyable affair; the fresher's theme was 60's prom and so wore a perfect puffed up frock with fur jacket. She loved it and that night when she returned from the party as she changed her clothes and rested. Only a few minutes after came Arnav, he gone South Asia for a tour and so just cuddling her closer said "Meeru, its time that I introduce you to world. It would be nice and then I can take you anywhere and anytime." She just hummed in reply and slept in his warmth. It was 45 days after he has come and she just wanted to have him silently.
But what she didn't knew was that he was serious so when the next day in breakfast as she was sitting in a doodle inspired jeans of multicolour with blue top of modern design in which her shoulders were visible. He held her hand and said "My designer will today come to take your measurements and also discuss what you should wear for the press meet. And don't worry I talked to Anjali and Bhau, they said that it is very correct." Just then Akash quipped "The Best Idea Ever!"
The whole media was mad with frenzy as Arnav's PRO gave them the scoop, "Today at 5 sharp, Arnav will reveal the Veiled Doll' and will answer about his relationship with her."
With that she came in limelight with a gown inspired red kurta as it was floor length plus it was as puffed as gowns but it was complimented with a black designer jacket which was of same length. It had beautiful gold work done on the jacket. With sleeveless jacket full sleeves kurta complemented. Her long hairs were made to messy bun and jewellary was kept to milimastic with only a choker and a long based chain with some adornments in side and her mangalsutra. This jewellary covered the plunging neck of both kurta and jacket. And only kanaunitis were preferred. With her he wore a red stand collar velvet jacket and black jeans. And the media was crazy shooting the photos of THE couple and just then Arnav said "I present to you, Mrs. Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada. We have been married for 2 years and she is grad from journalism as well as fashion. Khushi from now onwards will join Bhau's social movement."
Shyam just loved the girl who came out of college. She was fashionable yet still cultured and now she helped him in business so with Anjali, she and Akash he had a large team to help so for currently he can look towards his political commitments but he was most close to Khushi, they developed an uncanny friendship in the time being so he took her a lot for his campaigning as well as new plot development one because Anjali cannot go as she now heads Mumbai work and she is relaxed if she goes because then his diet is proper. So with that they decided to go to Kolhapur as there he wanted to open a girl's college for women who want to study but are not allowed to travel outside the district.
She looked so happy and radiant and she gave the inaugural speech that how education is necessary. When she was coming down from the stage she was caught by Badi Tai and all other elder ladies that how she was defaming their village name by encouraging girls to study as women should never study as this is the greatest sin and she has corrupted her soul in the Mumbai because now she wears this kind of sarees and speaks English plus she also allows other men to look at her with this kind of programs and her photos were regular in newspaper. Hence she should be outcaste because she has defamed them.
She just pulling her hand said "If you don't remember, I am not your daughter anymore. I am now Khushi Arnav Singh Raizada. And this is not a sin this what every girl should get. Education is not a sin but a gift. Plus I have not corrupted my soul but I opened it for better things in world. Now if you please excuse me I have press conference to attend. Shyam Bhau would be waiting for me."
Shashidhar was here saw his baby after a year though she may look the same but a lot had changed from her sarees to herself and he was happy to see the changes now he didn't need to worry about her future, now he can happily die as now he is not worried about what to answer her parents who left in his care. He was elated but he needed to keep his happiness in his control as this is his private heaven. Today he and Khushi both have being successful in their dheej.
