Teaser

They sat in stunned silence. Mahek's hand crept along the seat of the sofa to hold Khushi's and she flinched when her fingers touched her cold hands. She had gone stiff, still staring at the paper held in her hand. Mahek turned to look at Anna who was gripping the back of the sofa, her eyes wide in disbelief, forehead marred with a frown.

The quiet was broken with Malvika heading out from the kitchen to call the girls to breakfast. She instantly knew something was wrong from the lack of giggles and loud complaints from the twins. But before she could say anything, the sound of car tyres screeching to a halt outside jolted all the four women out of the stillness.

Anushka blurted, "Oh, for f**k's sake!" and sprang up from her seat like a bullet, marched to the door, opening it vehemently as she walked out. She caught sight of Arnav getting out of his car and heading for the gate that marked the entry of their garden path. Anushka Sehgal was one who rarely lost her temper and it was therefore, terrible to behold her in that form. She had never been afraid to call a spade for a spade - she had learnt that early on in her life. Between the twins, she was the aggressive one because Anna had always been the fragile one, the one that needed looking after. Over the years, Anushka had built-up a fierce sense of loyalty and protection built into her. She could never stand anyone who would hurt her sister and in the time she had known Khushi, had grown extremely fond of her, because she was much like Anna in many ways. They both had the same aura of frailty around them and it made Anushka want to punch the man striding purposefully towards her for subjecting Khushi to this utter humiliation.

She came to an abrupt halt when Arnav was merely a metre away from her and held out a high. The man, out of pure human reflex stopped. She could see the fury in his stance, but she held her stand and spoke, her voice steady in its resentment.

"One more step, Raizada, and I swear I shall make you regret walking past that gate. She doesn't want your presence now, she doesn't need to see you. Leave."
