That Bittersweet Day
Sanyukta was pacing up and down in her bedroom. She had been trying to reach Randhir for the past half an hour . She had called him up several times, left him innumerable texts and voice messages but with no reply. She felt she was going to burst with anxiety. This was getting too much for her to handle on her own. She needed Randhir to be there with her. She needed him to hold her tight , stroke her hair gently and tell her that everything was going to be okay, everything will turn out to be just fine.
Sanyukta propped herself on her bed, exhausted from all that disquiet. Her eyes involuntarily fell on the pregnancy stick lying on the table that was showing a positive test result. Her eyes welled up with tears. She brought her knees closer to her chest and buried her head in it. She sat like that for God knows how long, her mind blank, not able to register anything that was happening to her. She felt a warm sensation running down her cheeks and realised that she had been crying. She wiped her tears with sleeves of her peach colored pullover and tied her hair in a messy bun. Sanyukta got up from the bed and walked up to the window.
It was supposed to be a normal Sunday for her, a cosy holiday. But it took a turn for the worst when she looked at the calender and realised she had missed her period. With a sensation of mild panic, she rushed to get a test kit from the nearby departmental store. Once back at home she felt her fingers go numb as she waited for the results to show up. She would have to wait for 10 minutes, the pack said.
Those 10 minutes were probably the longest 10 minutes of her life. She was being plagued by a bazillion questions. What if it showed a positive result? What will she do? How will she handle a baby? Was she even ready to be a mother? And how will Randhir react? Angry? Most probably. What if he leaves her and their baby alone?
Sanyukta felt her throat choke. The result was here. It showed positive.
She stood near the window, sobbing. It was all her fault. Randhir was always careful about these things. And he had every reasons to be. They were young, they were not married. And being careful was the most sensible thing to do. Not once did they have unprotected sex. Except last month that is.
Sanyukta's head was throbbing as she remembered that night. She rubbed her arms to keep herself warm. It was cold outside and her pullover wasn't of much help.
The memories had still not faded away. It was not their first time. But with Randhir, every night is a night to remember. They had come late from a party. Both of them were completely wasted. A cab had brought them to Sanyukta's apartment. As soon as they entered her bedroom, Randhir plopped on the bed, not caring to remove his blazer or shoes. He just lay there, exhausted. A smile crossed her face as she gazed at him , from near the door, arms crossed around her chest. "He is so gorgeous." She thought admiringly. She removed her stole and threw it on a chair and jumped on the bed beside Randhir. They lay facing each other, looking into each other's eyes.
Sanyukta felt Randhir's cologne doing things to her as her fingers started unbuttoning his shirt. Randhir tried to slow things down but she was way too feral. It turned out to be one of their wildest nights ever.
The buzzing of the phone snapped Sanyukta out of her thoughts. She rushed to pick it up, hoping earnestly for the caller to be Randhir. It was him. Her hands trembled as she held the phone on her hand. She had to tell him, he had the right to know, whatever be the consequences. She took one deep breath and received the call.
"Sanyukta are you alright?!" Randhir's concerned voice boomed from the other end of the line. "I am so sorry. I had left the phone at home and gone to the market."
"I am fine Randhir." She replied quietly.
" Then 52 missed calls, 28 texts, 5 voice messages? Missed me so much ?" she could feel him smirk.
"Randhir I need to tell you something, something important. I am...pregnant."
There was a long silence as she patiently waited for him to say something. Anything. But the reaction never came. He had disconnected the call. She felt her heart sink. "Its over. Everything is finished. He is going to dump me and the baby. How am I supposed to survive without him. What will happen to the baby." She curled up on the sofa, feeling miserable as ever. She didn't realise when she drifted off to sleep, crying.
The incessant ringing of the doorbell woke her up from her slumber. "What the- Someone is in real hurry." She grumbled, still feeling miserable as she remembered what had happened a while ago. She got up from the sofa unwillingly and dragged herself to answer the door. She made a mental note to call up Randhir again later. She had to get a reaction out of him.
As she opened the door, all she could see was a huge bouquet of roses. Pink. Her favourite color. The next thing she noticed was the fluffiest teddy bear ever. The person behind the bouquet also had a box of chocolates. It was Randhir.
She broke down in sobs as she sat on the floor covering her face with her hands. Randhir smiled sadly as he put the gifts on a table. He knew she would have got scared when he cut the call abruptly. He just needed a little time to let things sink in. Randhir bent down and removed the hands off her face.
" Oh my God. What has my baby done to herself? You look like crap Sanyukta." He mocked her, his eyes twinkling with mischievousness. She hit his chest with her hands as she burst into childish giggles. He scooped her up in his arms and rubbed his nose onto hers.
"I am sorry Randhir." She mumbled, picking at the button of his shirt, not looking at his eyes.
Randhir raised his eyebrow questioningly.
"For tying you up in all this mess. I thought you are going to leave me."
Randhir sighed.
" This might be a mess Sanyukta, but it is also one of the most beautiful things that could have happened to me. And I can never ever leave my drop dead gorgeous girlfriend. Never. And I am so happy for us." He pecked her cheeks and placed her on the bed. She sat up.
" How are we gonna do this, Randhir? I am scared." Her eyes reflected child- like innocence.
"We will do it Sanyukta. Everything will be fine if we are together in this." He squeezed her palms tightly. He was nervous too. But nothing could beat the fact that how happy he was.
"Sanyukta?" he bent down on his knees.
"Yeah Randhir?" she brushed the hair from his forehead.
"Will you move in with me, in my place?" he looked at her expectantly.
She stared at him for a moment, her eyes getting welled up again. She engulfed him in a tight hug as they plopped on the bed together.
"I love you Randhir." She was laughing and crying at the same time as she heard him whisper, I love you more'.
"We are pregnant Sanyukta!" Randhir broke the hug as he looked at her, a broad grin across his face. He was nervous , happy and excited, all at the same time. " Yes we are, Randhir." She smiled as her heart melt seeing how happy her man was.
The crappy day had just become perfect.
