When the bell for the first unit of the day to end rang, Tom left his classroom with an entirely altered mood. The pain in his chest had disappeared when he had busied himself in work and his mood had been lifted when his students had shared their summer activities in the class.

They told him about visiting their relatives in Romania, Bulgaria and several other Wizard dwellings. He had himself never had the opportunity to leave Hogwarts but he was of course quite fascinated at the idea of travelling. He wanted to do it someday. Right now, Hogwarts needed him more. He couldn't leave his home just yet.

Tom's bright mood had another reason. His next unit was with first year Gryffindors and Slytherins. He would be seeing Alex in a few minutes. He had to talk to him at least once. Initially, he had felt he could not face this child but now he felt responsible for him, after all, he was his godfather.

Also, Tom's third and fourth units were consecutively with the Fifth years. He would have sufficient time to cover today's objectives with them even if he spent a few minutes in the beginning with Alex. All he needed now was Padma's permission to do so as Alex's third unit was Potions.

Thinking so, he turned a corner making to her office when quite unexpectedly he ran into someone who was in such a rush that Tom was again knocked over his feet and onto the stone floor.

"You could keep your eyes open, couldn't you?" Again, instead of a humble apology a very snide retort forced Tom to look up at the insolent man who had knocked him over.

It was Draco Malfoy. He straightened his jacket and without any effort of helping Tom rushed past him as he got back to his feet.

All the pain that had somehow disappeared came right back to Tom. He caught his breath and continued on his way to see Padma but by the time he reached her office she had already left for her second unit.

Tom left for his as well.

Invisible to Tom, Ron saw him to his classroom then left for Harry's office. He was about to knock when Malfoy opened the door and without a greeting or a farewell climbed back downstairs past him.

"What was he doing here?" he asked handing Harry his cloak back.

"His meeting was already scheduled. I had to submit my first day reports to him. I told him about the new librarians' behavior and that I shall be hiring new ones as soon as possible. He didn't have any objections."

"Did you tell him about the caretaker?"

"Oh, I forgot. He's been missing too, hasn't he?"

"Yup, wonder what happened to him?"

"Dunno. Maybe, Porch does. We'll visit him during lunch break. He'd be able to tell us something about him."

Ron nodded. "By the way, what did Malfoy say about Tom?"

"He was praising him. He told me he had accompanied Dutchmen to see Bolt when recommending Tom for this position. He didn't think they could have found anyone better than him."

Ron raised his eyebrows. "He wasn't very nice to him out in the castle."

"How come?"

"Tom ran into him and was completely knocked over but Malfoy was dead cold to him, didn't even try helping him back up."

"That's strange. He was very positive about him with his words."

"He wasn't quite so with his actions." Ron emphasized then suddenly remembered something. "Speaking of strange, you should know something."
