CHAPTER 11 : Down The Memory Lane

Randhir kept stealing glances at the duo and noticed that they ordered coffee and burger. He watched Sanyukta finish her food and get up to leave. He saw how Parth gave her a hug and muttered what seemed like 'sweet nothings' to her.

"Effing hell.." he thought and got up.

"I need to go to the library guys. I will catch you later..." he said stubbornly.

This time the other 3 didn't stop him. Randhir sidetracked parth and followed sanyukta. He saw her go towards the trauma centre and his heart strained.

He walked faster and caught up with her.

"Hey.." he said.

She stopped and looked at him.

"Randhir...hey.."

"Where's your dad? How's he?"

Sanyukta looked fatigued.

"Dad is in surgery...He's not g-good.." she chocked out.

She then went inside the trauma centre and Randhir followed her. As soon as they entered, they saw the operation theatre door swing open and her dad being brought out.

Randhir felt sanyukta go stiff beside him. He looked at her...she looked numb, afraid.

He then focussed on her father and his heart stopped. One look at her father transported him 10 years back.

*FLASHBACK*

"Mom, how many more days are you and dad planning to stay here?? I hate Dehradun...It's so boring..."

Dr. Renuka Shekhawat smiled at her son and took his hand and guided him inside the hospital ward. A small girl of 8 years sat on a chair, weeping.

"See that girl...She is the same age as you.." said renuka.

Then she took her son inside a cabin and pointed at a frail looking man lying on the bed.

"That man over there is her father...He is battling for his life...He will lose the battle unless I treat him...Now do u still want to go back to Delhi?" she asked softly.

An 8 year old randhir looked at the sick man and the little girl and shook his head.

"Save him mom...please" he said, his eyes moist.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

"It's her...She is...Oh Goddd..."

"...Toh delhi ke betaaj badshah Shahrukh Khan...Fact is, i love u...I am in love with u..."

The words hit him like tsunami.

"So that's how she knew about the SRK thing..."

He turned and saw Sanyukta rush forwards to the doctor and ask him about her father. The doctor replied something making her face fall. Randhir saw Sanyukta's mother look stricken.

She hugged her mom tight and then slowly released her. She then turned to look at him and their eyes met. He felt a sudden rush of guilt on seeing her moist eyes and sad face. How could he have doubted her?

She walked upto him and handed him his ATM card.

"I'm sorry...I forgot to give it earlier...I will pay you bac-.."

The rest of her words were lost as Randhir pulled her towards him and crushed her in a warm hug.

Sanyukta stiffened immediately and then relaxed in his embrace. The tears she was holding back all this time fell free. This was the second time she broke down before him. Randhir kept his hands protectively around her, willing her to feel his concern.

"Thank u.." she whispered in his ears.

And when he replied, his own voice was choked, "Old habits die hard eh 'Phoolan devi'? Still the cry-baby i see..."

Sanyukta broke free from his hug and stared at him in shock.

Randhir smiled and asked, "When were u going to tell me?"

And she broke down again.

The love she felt for him was so consuming that it made her want to be in his arms forever. But she knew he had a girlfriend. She knew she wasn't good enough for him. She knew he deserved better, wealthier and prettier. All of these emotions combined with her family's state, led sanyukta to be vulnerable for once in her life.

Randhir watched her turmoil in silence. He recalled the days when he himself was as broken as her. He cupped her face and made her look at him.

"What's a life without challenges? God tests only those of us who can deliver. Fight Sanyukta. Fight..." he said and watched her eyes go from despair to determination.

He leaned towards her and she copied him. They joined their foreheads and stayed that way.
