Khushi was standing with her head bowed down in front of her father in the living room she had been called to discuss some important matter. As far as she remembered, she hadn't done anything wrong then why did she feel like a student about to get punished by the head master. She was regular in her prayers and had also recited Quran today. What was it then? She was thinking of all the possible things her father could say but her thoughts were cut short when her father coughed to have her whole attention. Having that, he said the next words shocking Khushi to the core.

"Khushi, I have fixed your marriage with my best friend's son. They are coming on dinner to see you. I hope you don't have any objections with this alliance."

She had expected anything but this. She raised her wide eyes towards her mother who seemed to be giving her a hesitant smile and Aaliya who seemed rooted to her place like her. In that instant, Khushi knew that her mother was aware about this arrangement. Swallowing the lump in her throat and trying very hard not to cry in front of them, she asked:

"But baba..."

"Khushi I hope not in this matter, you won't go against my wishes. Imran Malik is my best friend and we had decided way back that our children will get married. I've given them my word and I'm sure you'll obey me." He said cutting her off with a finality in his tone marking the end of the conversation and Khushi could do nothing but just nod her head and said in a defeated voice: "Ji baba."

"Good. Now go get ready."

"Ji baba." She dashed out of the room to hide her tears and closed the room of her door to not show anyone how she was feeling. She continued to chant the mantra of be strong and inhaled a deep breath to calm herself down. She wouldn't cry over such a petty matter. It was going to be all okay, with that thought she gathered herself up and carried on with whatever baba had told her to do.

Dressed in a pale yellow kameez paired with white shalwar and a white dupatta covering her head, she stood in front of the dressing table and looked at herself. There was no trace of happiness, no eagerness to meet her husband to be. She faked a smile when saw the reflection of her mother through the mirror, approaching her.

"Khushi, meri baat suno." Her mother turned her gently by her shoulders and asked her to sit down so she could apply some kaajal which enhanced the beauty of her eyes, according to her Ammi. "Mujhe pata hai key yeh sab bohat jaldi ho raha hai laikin tum samajh sakti ho na? Apne baba ki baat maan lo!"

Khushi meekly nodded and said: "Ji ammi." What more could she say? She was expected to obey her parents and so she was doing that. With a light kiss on her forehead, her mother scurried away asking her to come downstairs soon without noticing the look of sadness in her daughter's eyes.

Chapter 1:

Khushi looked around the dining table to see the flurry of activities going on and her mother panicking as the time passed. Her mother was on a roll and she made sure that everything from the food to the kitchen towel was set properly like some Maharaja was coming. She shook her head and scanned the room to see her younger sister watching the TV absentmindedly. Ever since the new of her marriage broke, Aliya had not spoken a word. Mentally noting to ask what was wrong with her late at night, she got up to go and ask her mother if she needed anything else when she heard a horn in the driveway and her heart started speeding at an abnormal rate. She hadn't ever dealt with a situation like this and honestly, she wasn't sure how to handle this one as well. True, she had again and again told herself that everything was going to turn out fine but still she was perturbed with this whole thing. Giving herself a self-prep speech in her mind and taking deep breaths, she went forward to open the door as instructed by her mother.

Opening the door she was greeted by the sight of an elegant lady dressed in a designer anarkali and a man in his fifties, same age as her father. She greeted them with a Salam and felt the old man giving her blessings by placing a hand on her head. The lady, on the other hand, enveloped her in a comforting hug which felt good for some reason. Kissing her forehead, she said:

"Hamesha khush raho."

She looked at the couple in front of her. It was something about them that she couldn't help but like them. They were looking at her with such affection that made her heart melt and she let out the first genuine smile in the day. Welcoming them inside, she didn't dare to look at the person walking behind them. It wasn't just because of her anxiety, but she was least bothered about how he looked. When her father had already made a decision then what was the point in looking at him? It wouldn't matter, would it?

Sitting at the dining table, Khushi couldn't avoid the inevitable. She had looked up at the man who was going to be her husband out of curiosity and felt like it was the biggest mistake of her life. The way he was gazing at her made her feel exposed, like he was reading her. It seemed like he was seeing right through her which put her at unease. Quickly averting her eyes from him, she looked down to her food and suddenly felt like not eating and just like that dinner passed soon with Khushi playing with her food, Arnav looking at her now and then and everyone else reminiscing their old times.

After dinner, when they sat around the living room to catch up on the missed times and Khushi took a chance to run away from those unsettling caramel orbs on the context of some work in kitchen. Of course she was eavesdropping on their conversations in case they discuss something related to her and soon they did. Zoya Aunty asked her father whether he was okay with Arnav and her talking alone for a while. Reluctantly, he agreed shocking Khushi to the core. As far as she knew, he father was very conservative in these matters. He didn't even allowed Khushi to sit alone with her male cousins then what happened now? She jumped out of her skin when she heard footsteps nearing kitchen and out of reflex she hid under kitchen counter biting her nails and praying to Allah that he goes away disappointed seeing the kitchen empty. She wasn't ready to face him yet. Period! She was lost in her own musings when two black leather shoes stopped in front of her and he bent so he could come to her face level and said in an amused voice giving her his hand to help her up: "I think you can come out now."

Ignoring his outstretched hand, she got up and turned towards him with lowered eyes stuttering: "I...I...am sorry...woh"

"You don't need to be. It's normal for you to be nervous. Let's sit?" He asked pulling a chair for her and sitting across her. She was fidgeting with her dupatta when she heard her name being called ever so softly in a husky voice giving her goose bumps: "Khushi?"

"Jee?"

"It's true I wanted to talk to you alone but not like this. How about we continue the serious conversation part later? I don't want you to feel awkward."

A sigh of relief escaped Khushi's lips and she looked gratefully at him: "Thank you."

"It's no problem." He said waving his hands and asked her: "So what do you do?"

"I have done Masters in Economics."

"Wow. That's great. And what do you plan to do next?"

"I haven't decided yet." She lied easily. Well you learn to when you have been telling everyone this story again and again. Whenever someone asked about her education and what job she plans to do next, she told them that she hasn't decided anything.

"Oh." And something in that tone made Khushi realize that he had caught her lie so she decided to change the topic before he could further probe on it. "And you?"

"I am an architect."

She nodded and an awkward silence surrounded them. After few minutes of looking here and there, Arnav asked getting up: "Well we must go then. Everyone will probably waiting for us. Do you want to join or...?"

"I'm sorry but I have some work in the kitchen." She had to stay here to control her heartbeat that was going overdrive with his presence. He gave her small heartwarming smile and left to give her some space to gather herself up.

Chapter 2:

Later that night, when Khushi came out of the washroom, she looked at Aaliya lying on her bed deep in thoughts. Smiling at her, she moved and as soon as she sat on the bed, Aaliya turned and placed her head on Khushi's lap and closed her eyes in delight when Khushi started stroking her hair lovingly. It was the sister's daily routine. In this time, Aalliya shared each and everything with Khushi while the latter calmly listened and also gave her advice when needed. Today it was the first time that Aaliya was this quiet.

"Aliya, bacha, what happened?" Her question made Aaliya get up from her earlier position and she turned to look at her elder sister with questioning eyes:

"Api why did you agree to this marriage?"

"I didn't have a choice."

"You do. Refuse them. You can't marry a stranger."

"Abu knows them."

"Really? That gives you the more reason to deny this proposal. Abu's friend will also be like him and his son too. I don't want you to suffer like this later."

"I'm not suffering." Khushi said looking down refusing to meet her sister's eyes afraid that might see the complete opposite of what she had told her right now.

"Lie all you want but I know what's in your heart. It's your life and you have every right to decide what you want to do with it. It's so unfair on you."

"Aaliya, baba has a reason to this. He only wants our happiness."

"Yeah by marrying you off to some guy who may be like him." Aaliya retorted sarcastically.

"Acha bhai. Yeh sab choro. Tum yeh btao ke tumhara exam kaisa hua aaj?"

"Kar lijiye aap topic change. Main bhi nahin choron gi un ko."

"Aaliya, tum kuch aisa nahin karo gi." Khushi said in a stern voice knowing very well that if anything went wrong, baba would be very angry.

"Bari fikar ho rahi hai unki? Waise jo bhi hai, handsome bade hain woh." Aaliya asked in a teasing voice and immediately ducked down to avoid the cushion coming her way.

"Chup kar paagal!" And Khushi had no idea why she blushed a little on that. Yes, he was a nice guy. She may not have seen the world but she had some sense to judge how a person was. The way he pulled the chair for her showed his good mannerisms, the way he avoided the marriage discussion to make her comfortable showed that he cared about other's feelings, the way he talked to his or her parents showed that he respected elders. She wasn't mentally prepared for it but prayed to Allah to give her strength and make things better.

On the other hand, Arnav couldn't help but think about Khushi again and again. When he had first seen her, she was hell nervous. Who wouldn't be? But something in her posture and the small fake smiles she gave to everyone told him that there was much more that's why he asked his mother to talk to her alone for some time. But that hiding under the table incident told him that how adorably innocent she was. Childish, yes, but at the same time it was hilariously cute. The way she looked at him like a deer caught in headlights with wide eyes made him want to laugh but he had controlled himself not to scare the poor girl anymore. But he hadn't miss to see the color of her eyes-hazel. They were stunningly beautiful. He had no words to describe how he felt about those striking eyes that were a mixture of golden with specks of brown in it. He had never thought that only in one meeting, he'll come to notice so much about her. He twisted and turned on the bed but every time he closed his eyes, a hazel eyed beauty came in front of him and eluded him from sleep.

Chapter 3:

The next few days passed with Arnav's family pressurizing him to tell them his decision. He asked them to sit back and let him decide what was best for him and also requested them to call Khushi's family for dinner so they could talk once more. Zoya did just that and everyone went mad to prepare for what looked no less than a celebration. If Arnav had not said yes for the proposal so what? He had not denied it either and with the twinkle in his eyes whenever they talked about Khushi indicated that his answer will be in positive, Zoya thought clapping her hands together in excitement while her husband looked at her like she had gone crazy. Of course, she had. It was her only son's wedding and Khushi was a gem. She couldn't ask for more.

After what seemed like ages, much to Arnav's annoyance, Khushi's family reached at his place and the everything seemed to go on and on except the whole point of inviting them over. He quickly typed a text to his dad and send it to him.

I think you're forgetting the main purpose of calling them here.

Nah, I am just having too much fun seeing your face. By the way what that main purpose might be? His father replied and he couldn't help but shake his head at the crazy family God had given him. At first, his mother was winking at him when Khushi's family came and now his father was teasing him. What happened to the traditional families who were too shy to even say the M word? He thought.

Well then, fun over. You know that already.

Really? Where has the shame gone in today's kids? Asking the father to arrange for his son to meet a girl.

A girl that his father likes and is pestering him day and night to marry. It's okay if you don't want my answer by tomorrow.

And that did it because Imran immediately looked up at him with shock written all over his face and asked Rashid if it's okay for Arnav to show the house to Khushi and so here they were strolling at the poolside which was the best part of the house according to Arnav. He looked over at Khushi who was busy twisting and turning her dupatta around her fingers and spoke:

"Khushi my parents are very excited about us and want my answer as soon as possible. I really really like you but I don't wish to take things forward if you aren't happy." He looked at her shocked face and her cute little nose which had turned red due to his little confession may be. Can a person be any more adorable than this? He thought and again looked at her uncomfortable form and continued: "So please, if you have any doubt then you can tell me. You aren't being forced into this, are you?"

"NO! It was very sudden for me and I am sorry if I gave you a wrong impression but I am happy."

"So it's a yes from your side?" She nodded with heat and color rising on her face.

"Good then. You know the talks have been going on since forever. The best friends wanting to turn their friendship into rishtedaari. Filmy much, lekin kya kar sakte hain?" He explained with a dramatic sigh and chuckled and he saw a small smile on Khushi's face. That wasn't that hard, was it now? He grinned to himself. He could at least make her smile, a genuine one that is. Every action of her screamed innocence and purity and that is what he admired about her. In just two meetings, she had managed to get a space in his heart with her innocence and he just hoped that she wasn't doing this because she had to or was asked to.

This was unbelievable. Here Arnav was clearly giving her a way out, he was asking her for her opinion and she had said that she was happy. When she had uttered those words, she wasn't sure from where it came from but she knew she meant them. True, she was scared and nervous at the prospect of getting married to a stranger but now after meeting him for two times, she just knew that he was the right one. The way he was asking about her opinion in this matter stirred something in her heart. It touched her and she admitted to herself that she had come to like this person who wanted to assure that the next step would be decided by her. Though frightened to take a step forward not knowing where it would lead to, a teeny tiny part of her was looking ahead to start this relationship.

Chapter 4:

Arnav Malik was frustrated. Only yesterday he had told his parents that he was ready to marry Khushi and now they also fixed a date for their nikkah which was after five days. Moreover, his mother had taken Khushi to shopping and his father and Khushi's father were discussing the guest list so he couldn't discuss this matter with them. He was in a meeting yesterday when his father had texted him that they were going over at Ahmed's to tell them that Arnav had agreed. Suppressing an urge to go with them cancelling every other thing, he had continued with his work only to receive a text two hours later that the wedding date have been fixed within the next week as it was auspicious for the couple in future. He had planned on talking to them when he had gotten home only to be informed that they were out. Things were going too fast and though he didn't have any problem with that, he was worried for Khushi. They hadn't even started opening up to each other yet then how were they supposed to get married? It was fine for him, but what about her who had to leave her house and live at a practically stranger's place.

He massaged his head to soothe the nerves due to the hectic day at office and other tensions surrounding him when he felt someone sitting on the bed beside him. Knowing very well who it might be, he lied down in his mother's lap and let her stroke his head which was very relaxing. After greeting her with a salam, she spoke clearly understanding the turmoil he was in:

"I know you'll be wondering that everything's happening too fast but Arnav it's your nikkah next week. Rukhsati will be done in a month or so. That will give you guys enough time to know each other. And for that, I have asked them to join us for two weeks at the farmhouse after your nikkah. Now does that solve your problem?"

"Thank you." He could only utter that due to the feeling of being overwhelmed. His ammi could understand him so well, he didn't even have to put it in words and she knew what he wanted to say.

"Chal pagal. Maa ko shukriya bolta hai." She said smacking him on his head playfully while he grinned at the obvious attempts of his parents to make all this easy as much as it was possible.

He liked Khushi a lot and he would make sure that this relationship works out for both of them. And for that he couldn't wait till nikah. Few moments ago, he felt that it was too fast and now it felt that the date was set too far. Eagerness to meet her, to ask her how she was feeling was very much evident but alas he will have to wait for five more days.

On the other hand, Khushi couldn't help but feel confuse. Everything was happening so fast. Only last week her abu had told her that her marriage was fixed to a boy unknown and within a week, she had not only come to like him but also was strangely eager for this nikkah. She wanted to know whether Arnav would be like what she had imagined. So far he had been so understanding and soft spoken that unknowingly she had started dreaming about a wonderful life. But the fear of having her dreams broken like always as before was far greater than any anticipation. What if it turned out to be worse? What if the picture she painted in her heart for a perfect family life wasn't fulfilled? With these questions in mind, she prayed with all her heart that everything turns out to be fine and she couldn't afford to have her hopes shattered again this time.

That was how Aaliya saw Khushi, deep in thoughts. Her expressions changing from one to another. First she was blushing like a normal bride to be, then she was surprised, then she was sad and lastly, the same blank expression she had been wearing all these years. She placed a hand on her shoulder and Khushi looked up startled. "Aaliya tum ne toh humen dara hi diya."

"Kya soch rahi hain?"

"Kuch bhi toh nahin."

"Aap humen nahin btayen gi?"

"Unhon ne humse humari marzi poochi."

"KYA!?"

"Unhon ne kaha ke sirf humari haan ke baad hi yeh baat aage badhe gi."

"Aur aapne kya kaha? Aap bol deti na ke aap khush nahin."

"Aisa nahin hai. Hum sach main khush hain ab. Wo boht ache hain."

"Aapi? Kahin aap unhen pasand toh nahin karne lag gayin?"

"Nahin toh." And with that Aaliya saw the most precious sight she had yearning to all these years. Khushi lowered her gaze and looked everywhere except Aaliya but the shy smile on her face could never be mistaken and anyone could see the glow on her face and the twinkle in her eyes. Her cheeks were adorned with red hue and she seemed genuinely happy after so many years. Aaliya hugged her feeling content and in her heart thanked the guy who was responsible for all this.

Chapter 5:

If anyone asked her how she was feeling then she would have immediately replied- nervous. In fact all this was nerve wrecking but with that came many more emotions too. Today she was going to be Arnav's wife in front of everyone. Though it wasn't her rukhsati today but still she was a guest in her home for a month or so. Anticipation of what may come next was far greater than anything else at this moment. Sitting in her bridal wear, her hands adorned with dark mehndi which had a beautiful A' written in between, she looked a vision to behold.

Every girl has a dream of her weddings and so did Khushi until...her musings were broken by the knock on the door. Aaliya came in and looked at her with awe and misted eyes. She knew that if anyone was genuinely concerned for her then it was her little sister. She motioned her to sit beside her and once she did, Khushi took her hands in her own and spoke with gratitude: "You do know that I love you, don't you?"

Once Aaliya nodded her head trying hard not to let tears fall from her eyes, she went on to say what she so wanted to. She knew her sister would be needing this talk. She had to ensure that she lived her new life with absolute joy and didn't have anything to worry about.

"I know you have been trying to look out for me these years and I don't know from what but you have been protecting me ever since I have been able to understand things. No, I am not going to ask you what that is. We are over that many times. You have been a mother to me. All I want to say is that please, forget the sorrows and start a new life."

Khushi hugged her and tried to say something but her throat felt chocked up and no word came out. Quickly wiping both of their tears, Aaliya shook her head sideways indicating her not to cry and went off as their mother called her.

When had her little sister grown up so much? Aaliya had relaxed a part of her that was deep in worry with her past. True she had hidden many facts from Aaliya but it was for her own good. There was no way in hell, she was letting anything or anyone overshadow Aaliya's youth and bubbliness for their own selfish reasons. Khushi always knew that she could count on Aaliya and only she knew how to make her feel better. Well not the only one, her heart whispered and she remembered Arnav's call few days ago.

Flashback

"Khushi?" Arnav said in his deep husky voice.

"Ji?" She replies hesitantly as to why he was calling her.

"Tum theek ho?"

For an instance she forgot to breathe listening to his concerned voice which made him clear what he was asking.

"I mean are you alright? With the nikkah date not so far, I do have a slight idea about what you must be going through."

"Woh...haan...mera matlab hai ji..." She stuttered not knowing how to convey her mixed feelings and he understood, as always.

"Khushi? It's okay. If that makes you feel better, I am also very nervous."

"Kyun?" She blurted out.

"Woh kya hai na meri kabhi pehle shaadi nahin hui." He finished off in an amused tone and after exclaiming a loud "JI" started laughing to her hearts content while the latter could only rejoice the fact that he was the reason behind her magical laughter.

Flashback ends

She was brought back to the present by her mother's footsteps. She said patting her head: "You look beautiful MashAllah. Cover yourself. Molvi sahib is coming to read your nikkah."

After covering herself properly with a veil on her head, Molvi sahib came and sat on the sofa adjacent to her bed and recited some verses of the Holy Quran and asked the most awaited question:

"Kya aap ko Arnav Malik se nikkah qubool hai?"

"Qubool hai." She repeated the words thrice which reminded her that now she belonged to someone else. Was it her imagination or did she just really feel the sense of calmness spread over her? It was as if she was waiting for this moment only. Did every bride feel the same or she was different? No longer had she shad signed her marriage papers, she was engulfed in a hug by each and every one. Some whispering congratulations and some their hearty prayers for Arnav and her to have a blissful life ahead. Her mother took her in her embrace and said: "Always keep your husband happy. Do what he asks you to do and never question him."

Something in her stirred and all she felt was hurt at the moment. She was someone who hardly held anything against anyone but today when she needed her mother the most, her mother had only advised her to keep her husband happy and that's it? No soothing words and when she was actually excepting her to give her dua that may she be happy, she had gone and said those words which were now stinging her. Thankfully, her veil had hidden her face expressions that mirrored only hurt and tears in her eyes which she was trying hard to hold back. A girl always expect her parents to be there for her in this moment of her life. The value of this emotional moment can never be compared to anything else. And today Khushi knew that she didn't belong to this house in the true sense of the word. Her father hadn't even come to wish her well and her mother could only think about her son in law. She had seen her Chachu kissing his daughter's forehead when she was married off and had wished that a moment like this comes in her life too but alas. Swallowing back the pent up sentiments she felt, she stood up with the help of Aaliya and steadying herself careful not to show her distress, she let her sister lead her to the main hall where everyone else, including Arnav was sitting. If Khushi looked breath taking then Arnav looked no less either. Dressed in a white shalwar kameez, he looked like a guy walking out of a magazine cover, undoubtedly handsome at that.

Arnav smiled at her that made her heart melt and when their gazes locked with each other, he assured her with his eyes that everything was going to be alright. She smiled up at him and felt her heart burst with happiness when his mother took her in a gentle hug and kissed her forehead before blessing her. "Hamesha khush rehna beta." Next came her father in law who patted her head and said jokingly: "Agar Arnav zyada tang kare na tou soche baghair mere paas chale ana. Main dekh loon ga."

Her happiness knew no bounds today. It was true that if Allah closes one door then HE opens another for his children. The words or gestures she had missed from her parents, she was getting them from his parents. She had already promised to herself, that she would cherish her relationship with them, no matter what. She looked over at Arnav who was making faces at his father and mouthing a traitor to him. She chuckled at this new family, which as a blessing she was given by Allah and was led to sit beside her husband. He bend a little towards her and said: "Hi."

In reply she only smiled, not being able to speak anything partly because of shyness and partly because her mother had said so. Soon she was being introduced to Arnav's closest relatives who came to attend the nikkah and vice versa.

When they were done with the guests and Khushi was helping her mother prepare tea for their and Arnav's family as they were the only ones left. But soon she was being pulled by Aaliya to her room and she asked, shaking her head at her sister's craziness:

"Aaliya kahan le ke ja rahi ho humen? Neeche ammi ko humari help ki zaroorat..."

"Nahin hai. Jahan aapko hona chaye wahin le ke ja rahi hoon." She said and pushed towards the figure that emerged out of the dark in her balcony and balanced her with his arms. Her eyes widened at both of them and she let out a gasp narrowing her eyes at this little brat who looked proud of her achievement. She was about to say something when Aaliya beat her to it and said:

"Arnav bhai. Ye lijiye. Aapka kaam toh hogaya." And ran off before her aapi could scold her. She realized that Arnav was staring at her and she cleared her throat.

"I know everyone must have told you that but Khushi, you look beautiful." Yes everyone had told her that but hearing this from her husband's mouth, gave her an altogether different happiness. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she said: "Shukriya."

They were standing in a comfortable silence leaning on the railing of the balcony and he turned towards her completely saying: "Khushi Arnav Malik, sounds nice, huh?" Her heart thudded in her chest and butterflies danced in her stomach at her being addressed with her new name and she couldn't help but lower her gaze and the shy smile that escaped her lips.

Chapter 6:

If this is what it felt like to be out of this world, then he was definitely feeling like it. Khushi belonged to him and he had every right on her. Just yesterday he felt like it was going too fast and now he felt like a moron to not object on the idea of Khushi's rukhsati after a whole month. It took all his will power to not get up and drag Khushi to his own house. That poor girl would be scared out of her wits. From some days, he had felt a change in Khushi's behavior. She seemed genuinely happy now. Yes the hesitancy was still there but it wasn't something that should bother him. They had hardly talked for four times and he didn't expect anyone to open up in such a short time. At least she normal with him now but he hadn't failed to understand the pain swimming in her eyes when she came down in the hall. He had also noticed how she had nearly burst in tears of happiness when his parents had blessed her and she looked like a kid deprived of that love. Whatever it was, he vowed to himself, that he would make things right for Khushi and will give her every happiness in the world.

He smiled to himself when he recalled the conversation he had with his father this morning at the breakfast table. He couldn't do anything about rukhsati but he could certainly do something about the farmhouse deal his mother and he had.

"When are we going to the farmhouse?"

"Why are you so excited to go the farmhouse?" His father asked him wriggling his eyebrows playfully at Arnav and he glared at his father.

"Abu!"

"Fine. Fine. We are going to go next week."

"How about day after tomorrow?"

"Eager, are we?"

"You are incorrigible." He threw his hands up in air giving up and got up to go to work shaking his head but stopped in his tracks when he heard his ammi, who was till now the silent spectator of the words being exchanged between the father and son duo: "Take a two weeks leave from your office starting from tomorrow." He rushed back, hugged his mother, smirked at his father and dashed towards the office to do what he was told.

Day after tomorrow came in less than expected time with all the packing, informing Khushi's family, checking the arrangements at the farmhouse. Their farmhouse was located in the outskirts of the city surrounded by hills and greenery. It was away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the Malik family usually spent their holidays here. They had reached before Khushi's family to ensure that everything was fine and rooms were settled as per everyone's requirement.

After exchanging initial greetings, everyone retired to their respective rooms for freshening up while the ladies prepared for the dinner. Arnav dropped by in the kitchen on the excuse of helping his ammi but everyone knew too well so all he was left with was nothing. He was about to sulk at the fact but one look at Khushi's face who was biting her lip trying to control her laughter washed away every other thought in his mind and he was left spellbound at the sight. His lips curved upward on its own accord but soon he frowned because of someone clearing his throat.

"Sharam toh nahin ati." Of course! It had to be his father.

"Apni biwi ko dekhne main kaisi sharam?" He shrugged but his eyes remained on that one special person who was blushing at something Aaliya whispered in her ears while making rotis.

"Ya Allah. Kya ho gaya hai aaj ki generation ko?"

"C'mon abu don't tell me, aap ammi ko chup chup ke dekha nahin karte the. Jahan tak mujhe yaad hai aap ne bachpan main mujhe bari chocolates di hui hain so that I leave you guys alone. Do you want me to tell ammi about that?" He asked innocently but Imran knew better.

"Arrey! I only did that because you were always stuck to your ammi and I used to sulk like this too." He tried to defend himself but all went in vain when his son raised is eyebrow and he pleaded: "Don't tell this to your ammi, please."

"Help me in meeting Khushi alone and I won't."

"What did your mother eat before giving you birth?"

"I love you too abu." Was all he said and resumed what he was doing before he was disturbed- admiring his wife.

Dinner was quite eventful as the two families mingled with each other and soon after everyone retired to their respective rooms due to the tiredness of the journey. However sleep eluded Arnav and he decided to go on the terrace for some fresh air. On finding the door already open, he thought on who would be up at this time and what he saw next made his heart skip a beat. Khushi was standing there in a white kurta, her head uncovered with her long hair flying with the wind. He had a side view of her face and she looked ethereal when the moonlight shone on her face making her nose pin sparkle and making her look like an angel. He had never seen Khushi without her hijab and now he couldn't take his eyes off from her. He didn't know when he whispered her name softly: "Khushi?"

She gasped and turned as if a deer caught in headlights but then relaxed knowing it was Arnav only. But then panic struck her when she realized that she had no hijab on and hadn't care about it as she thought that no one would be awake at this time of night. She glanced at him again and saw him lost.

"I am sorry. I didn't know that..."

She was cut off by him when he asked in a teasing tone with a mixture of curiosity: "Tum har baat pe sorry kyun bolti ho?"

"Ji?"

"Relax. Breathe." He said in that low husky voice which made it more difficult for her to do what he asked her to. But she managed to mumble: "Woh humara dupatta."

"Rehne do." Was his immediate reply and she had to gulp on the prospect of standing here with him like this. And she didn't know why that command in a softest tone had send tingles all over her body. She had never ever taken her hijab off in front of her father and here she was standing not only with her head uncovered but also without a dupatta. Imagine how scandalize her mother would be? She would be horrified, she thought with a sigh and turned to him when she heard him asking her: "Neend nahin arahi thi?"

"Nahin woh nayi jaga hai na is liye. Aur aap?"

"Mujhe bhi neend nahin arahi thi toh socha why not get some fresh air and now I am glad I thought that. Anyways betho na." She said gesturing towards the ben bags placed there and she did as she was asked to. Arnav noticed her sitting at the extreme edge with her hands folding over one another and her looking down. "Khushi, sahi tarah betho. Comfortable ho ke. Main tumhara interview nahin lene laga." And he saw a faint smile blooming on her face and she sat with much more ease than before and they both talked for hours and only went to sleep after they couldn't keep their eyes open.

Chapter 7:

Arnav opened her eyes when the sun rays hit his face and unknowingly a smile crept up on his face. Stretching his arms a bit and sitting up on the bed, he thought about the only person who had clouded all his thoughts ever since he met her. He was glad that she was opening up. Only he knew how much he loved when she talked. Last night was unquestionably one of the many best nights of his life. They had gone from one topic to another. She had told him how she loved painting and mystery novels were her favourite because they made her curious and she wanted to keep on reading till it finished. She was surely different from other girls. Whereas girls of her age had mills and boons under their covers, Khushi was the one who loved thrillers. Her eyes sparkled when she talked about things she loved but soon the same sadness he had seen was replaced when he asked her to paint for him someday. She had chuckled humorlessly and said: "I'm not sure if I can even hold a brush properly now. It was a very long time ago."

"We'll see to that." He had said and jumped to another topic. Also the strangest thing he had noticed was that Khushi didn't have any friends. While he had a whole gang of about 10 people, she didn't even have a single friend, besides her sister. Though Arnav found it really weird, he didn't show it. He had talked about his college experiences, his trips with friends, his work and what not. All the while, Khushi had listened genuinely interested.

Khushi was a different story altogether. She still couldn't believe that she had opened up to him like this. She has always been a friendly person but with that, she was forced to be reserved too. She hadn't ever talked to a guy like this before. Her interactions with men was limited to salam to her elder cousins, her uncles who only asked how she was doing or when her father talked to her. This was totally new and strangely, it felt good. She knew he was now her husband and as much as it was right for them to meet up like this, she wasn't sure how her mother or father, for that matter, would take it. Thankfully no one had even noticed Khushi entering her room after their long night chat. He was caring, compassionate, outgoing and everything a girl could ever wish for in her husband. Khushi did feel lucky but with that came a sense of fear within her. Would she be able to make Arnav happy? Would he like a reserved, nervous and shy girl? Not mulling over these thoughts, she decided to only relish in the moments she had spent in talking with him. She had told him her likes, once again shocking herself. Never had she discussed that she liked painting except her family. Then why him? May be because it felt right. When he had talked about his work, she had seen passion in his eyes. He was doing his dream job, he had told her. He had told her that he and his friends always planned a trip once in six months to a different place every time and she was forced to wonder how different they were.

She was brought out of her reverie by her mother, ordering her to lay the breakfast table. At the dining table, Afreen popped up the idea of shopping. Apparently, there was a village nearby which held an exhibition every year. Traders from different states or even cities came and presented their works be it jewelry, clothes or utensils. Excitedly, everyone gobbled down their breakfast quickly and went off to get ready. Khushi had come out only to find the house empty. Did she take too long that they left her? She wondered and heard someone clearing his throat. Arnav watched as she, fidgeting with her dupatta, asked:

"Wo sab..."

"Abu ne kaha ke hum donon akele ayen."And there goes her heart overdrive. Nodding her head, she followed him out and smiled when he opened the passenger door for her. The ride was quite a silent one, but comfortable. Finally breaking the silence, he asked:

"Do you like old Hindi music?" She looked at him surprised and nodded. Clicking on the CD player, he played one of her favourite songs too. Khushi and Aaliya had a thing for old collections and whenever they got time, they used to listen to them but once when their father had come to know, and had objected to it, their mother had banned every kind of music from their house. But unknown to both of them, Aaliya had a small radio hidden in her cupboard and though Khushi was scared, the puppy eyes of her little sister melted her heart and she obliged to her demands.

"I love these kind of songs as compared to the ones being made today."

"I love their poetry. They held a meaning which actually made them soulful."

"I agree. Chalo, there's at least something we have in common here."

And it was quiet again. But both of them didn't mind. The song abhi na jao chor ke' reverberated in the car. Soon they reached their destination and started to find the others who come half an hour back, credits to Arnav's slow driving. One thing Khushi despised was the crowds and rush places. It suffocated her and she felt like she was the center of everyone's attention. Anxiety coursed through her veins when she felt a hand engulf her own into a very gentle grasp. She looked at their hands shocked and then dared to look up at the assuring eyes of Arnav. Every time, he knew how to make her feel better. His eyes held a promise and surprisingly, Khushi could read it.

When Arnav saw Khushi's face, he instantly knew her discomfort. Her eyes were the most expressive and he couldn't help but hold her hand and through his eyes, ensured her that there was no need to be scared as her was there for her and he will always protect her. Soon they were joined by the others, and if Khushi thought he will leave her hand once with their families, she was utterly wrong. Arnav purposely walked slow and was behind everyone lest Khushi feels awkward with holding hands in front of their parents. Though, she was at first but only after seeing his firm grip she had let the matter go and relaxed.

Aaliya saw the two love birds and sent a thankful prayer to Allah. Her aapi deserved every ounce of happiness and now she was sure that Arnav will give her everything she had missed out in life.
