A twist of events chapter 6:
Khushi smiled to herself but Arnav noticed it. As she went to tour the rest of the apartment, Arnav took off his coat and made himself comfortable on the couch and turned on the tv. Khushi came back into the room and was surprised to find him there sitting as if he owned the place...which he technically did. But still wasn't he going to go home?
She walked up to him and spoke,
"Aren't you going to go home?"
"Why would I do that?"
"Well I'm pretty sure your family must be waiting for you"
"Why? My family is right here." And he looked at Khushi instantly locking her gaze.
She turned away with much difficulty.
"You can't stay here with us" she said while focusing on nothing in particular
He walked up to her and turned her face towards him. His touch brought back so many memories and it...it was too much for her to handle. She couldn't have him touch her...no it just wouldn't work. She pushed him off abruptly.
"I WANT YOU TO GO! JUST DON'T STAY WITH US! WERE ONLY HERE FOR THE TREATMENT AFTER WHICH WERE LEAVING" she said in a loud voice.
Arnav was still recovering from the fact that she had pushed him so hard. He clenched his fists...how dare she speak to him like this?
He was about to walk up to her and grab her when she moved back and pointed a finger stopping him.
"Don't...even...come close to me" she said in a dangerously low whisper. Arnav was shocked...she was acting with...with so much hatred in her eyes. With that she turned and walked away into the nursery.
Arnav walked back to the couch which he was previously sitting on. What got her to act so suddenly like that? Only a few minutes ago she was smiling at the apartment and stuff...what the hell just happened? He decided to call the hospital and arranged an appointment for his daughter later in the evening.
He should probably tell her about the appointment he thought. He walked into the nursery and found her standing over Shaila's crib looking at her cute, chubby face. He went and stood on the opposite side of the crib and looked at Khushi. She didn't look at him but had obviously sensed his presence considering her stiff form.
He spoke quietly
"Khushi...we have an appointment tonight with the best cardiologist in India...Dr. Amir Ali Mehta. He agreed to be Ani's doctor even on such short notice. I...I just wanted to tell you to get ready...it's at 7pm."
She still didn't look at him but nodded.
"And I know you haven't eaten anything apart from those snacks earlier today so I asked Amina...the house keeper to make some food. Let's go we can have a late lunch" he extended his right hand for her.
She looked at his hand and then at his sincere face. She was really hungry and could smell the tasty aroma coming from the kitchen. She didn't take his hand but took the baby monitor and walked ahead.
Arnav walked behind her silently.
They sat on the high stools of the kitchen counter next to each other and ate their food in silence. Arnav stole a few glances at Khushi but she didn't look up at him once.
She got up just as she finished and washed her plate and went back to the nursery. Thankfully Shaila was still asleep. Khushi had some time to think. She went to the window and stared down at the Delhi city bellow.
It had been so long since she had been here in this city. She didn't know how long she stood and admired the view. Only when Shaila's cries began did she get out of her trance. She went to get her but before she could, two strong arms had already pulled her up and the cries stopped instantly. She snuggled against her dad's shoulder and fell back asleep with soft whispers and gentle caresses on her back.
Khushi did nothing but stare in awe at the duo.
He spoke while he rocked his baby back and forth,
"Khushi...get ready were leaving soon."
She looked up at him.
"Your clothes have all been set in the room across from the hall. Go change" he said
She walked out of the room and into the other one. She opened the closet and found all her clothes neatly arranged and hung up. The other side of the closet had all his clothes. What did he think? She would actually share a room with him? HA.
She took her clothes and changed in another bathroom...she didn't want to share anything of his. She came out in an alarmingly simple outfit- a dark purple kameez paired with cream colored choonat pajama.
These simple clothes were what she wore now...not any of the fancy anarkalis like she used to. She brushed her hair and tied it up in a pony tail and came to get Shaila.
She saw Arnav still cradling her in his arms pacing around the room. He was murmuring things to her only she could hear...if she was awake that it.
Arnav felt her presence and turned around to find her staring at him. She was dressed soo simply. It was so different from her previous style.
He gave a sleeping shaila to khushi and said,
"Khushi get her ready..I'm going to go freshen up"
Khushi looked at her weak daughter. She was too small for her age. Too weak. It was her heart problem.
"Come on my sweet baby..Let's get you ready."
She got a sleepy, yawning Shaila ready in a shorter time than usual. Once she finished feeding her, she went downstairs to find Arnav in a new suit waiting for them.
He took Shaila from her without any consent and sat her in the car seat. Shaila was now awake after her long sleep.
They finally reached the hospital.
"Hi. Dr. Mehta...this is my family. My wife Khushi and my daughter Shaila" he said to the doctor with Shaila in his arms, sucking her thumb while she lay her head on her father's shoulders.
"Arnav please...I thought we had gone through this...call me Amir..and very lovely family you've got here" he smiled , nodding at Khushi who smiled and nodded back.
It was so strange for Arnav to call her his wife...it felt so weird and unfamiliar to her.
"Please...take a seat"
They did as they were told. Khushi handed the doctors all the files of the test results she had done previously. The doctor examined them carefully.
After a while he spoke seriously.
"Mr. and Mrs. Raizada...Arnav and Khushi...by looking at these tests...it is definitely confirmed that your daughter suffers from congenital heart disease...but I cannot figure out the exact defect simply by looking at these reports."
Both Arnav and Khushi nodded while a quiet Shaila analyzed her surroundings still over her father's shoulders.
"If you want...I can carry some tests on her right now and have the results earliest by tomorrow evening."
They both nodded and once the tests had been completed they bid goodbye.
Once they got home, Arnav set down Shaila in her crib who was instantly caught up in the stars and pretty toys dangling . She began to play with them. He took the baby monitor and lead khushi out of the room.
"Khushi...we should probably get some sleep"
"yes we should. I'll go sleep with my daughter" and she turned around to leave. But he stopped her.
"Khushi...she's in her crib..we have this monitor so we'll know when she wakes up."
"HAWW? You want me to sleep in a separate room from my 2 year old daughter?Ha. not happening."
"Khushi...she needs to sleep in a separate room now...it's better for her. Trust me."
"No way"
"Khushi just listen to me. The second she cries well know cuz we can hear her over this. We place it in our room on the bedside table."
Khushi looked speculative for a moment.
"Okay fine. But I'm going to a separate room. I'm not sleeping with you' she said icily.
"fine. Do whatever you want. Tell Amina to go arrange a guest room for you. Take the room at the end of the hall'
She nodded and left.
She slept alone...for the first time in 2 years and 7 moths..after the birth of her daughter...she was sleeping alone. It felt so strange. She needed her daughter. Uggh laad governer...won't even let me sleep with my daughter.
She didn't know when she finally fell asleep but a few hours in, she heard cries on the baby monitor. She immediately rushed down the hall into her daughter's room. But she saw that Arnav had beat her to it. He was shirtless, cradling her in his arms softly whispering in her ears, pacing the room.
"How did you get here? You don't even have the baby monitor with you" she said trying to gulp away the sensation of seeing his rippling muscles and toned chest
"Khushi...that's why I told you to stay in my room...it's so close to Shaila's. And I'm just a light sleeper..that's all" he shrugged unconvincingly.
She moved closer to him.
"Your lying aren't you? You stayed in this room all night"
He looked back down at his daughter sleeping peacefully in his arms. Her curly, long hair bouncing with every step he made. Her pink lips slightly parted with her thumb stuck firmly in between. Her cheeks had the faintest touch of pink to them.
Khushi's heart warmed at this. She knew he was in here all night with her.
"What were you doing all night?" she asked softly.
He shrugged, while still looking at her
"...I was looking at her...she's beautiful" he said after a pause.
Another pause later he continued, his eyes still focused on his baby.
"She looks like you" he said in an almost whisper.
Khushi stopped dead in her tracks. He looked up at her finally, looking as vulnerable as a little child. She took her gaze of him and stared at the floor because she knew she couldn't take the torment in his eyes. She walked quietly back to her room...to her large, lonely bed.
The day had passed without much interaction between the two and now it was time for their daughter's appointment.
The doctor gravely led them into the office. The expression on their face told them that something was not right.
Arnav once again carried Shaila in. Khushi was beginning to find this odd as Shaila never stayed still for so long. Even today all day, she seemed drowsy and sleepy and didn't move much. Also she slept a lot more these days.
Was something wrong?!
"Umm...its hard to say this but..."
Arnav and Khushi both paled and did not know what to expect.
"your daughter suffers pulmonary arterial hypertension"
"Whats that?" Khushi asked almost stone cold due to fear by now.
"Mrs. Raizada...can I ask you a question?"
She nodded.
"Has your daughter become more restless and cries more often now?"
Khushi nodded.
"Does she sleep a lot more and is generally tired quickly?"
She nodded in affirmative again.
"Does she indulge in a lot of physical activities?"
"Umm...well she used to...but now like you said...her drowsiness unables her from doing so"
Mr. Mehta nodded and noted everything down diligently. Arnav was now observing his daughter who was once again quiet and falling asleep on his shoulder. He began to get worried.
"Doctor...can you please explain what that is?" he asked.
"Pulmonary arterial hypertension is high blood pressure in the arteries that supply the lungs. the blood vessels that supply the lungs constrict and their walls thicken, so they can't carry as much blood. The heart works harder, trying to force the blood through. If the pressure is high enough, eventually the heart can't keep up, and less blood can circulate through the lungs to pick up oxygen. Patients then become tired, dizzy and short of breath. In this case, the pulmonary arterial hypertension is associated with congenital heart disease. The problem is due to scarring in the small arteries in the lungs"
They both nodded trying to digest this new information.
"What can we do to help her?" Arnav asked sounding helpless.
"Many times after surgery is done to correct the congenital heart defect, the blood pressure in the lungs becomes normal. In other cases the pressure may remain higher than normal, making it harder for the heart to pump. In rare cases, the pressure may be high enough that surgery becomes too risky. Oxygen or medications may be used to try to relax the blood vessels and reduce the blood pressure after surgery or if surgery is not possible."
"And what are her chances? Can she do the surgery?" Khushi asked.
The doctor nodded thoughtfully.
"According to the results from the tests...Shaila's pressure isn't that high so it can be fixed with surgery."
They both let out a sigh of relief.
"But...as you can see...Shaila's condition is getting worse and if the surgery is not done soon...then...problems may occur"
"How soon? We can do it as soon as possible" Arnav said.
After a long sigh, the doctor spoke,
"today...would be ideal"
"GREAT! LETS DO IT TODAY THEN!" Arnav exclaimed.
Khushi's heart lit up with happiness.
The doctor stood up,
"Alright Ill ask a nurse to arrange a ward for your daughter and the OR as well...till then you can do the formalities..you know paperwork...healthcare, insurance, etc, etc" the doctor smiled and left.
Arnav smiled and looked at Khushi who was also smiling and playing with Shaila who was in Arnavs lap. He too began playing with her and the small family of 3 forgot all the problems in the world and enjoyed each others company.
