CHAPTER: 14
"You want a love that consumes you.
You want passion and adventure and even a little danger!"
-Damon Salvatore

TECH FEST FINALE DAY (Part 2):
Parth Kashyap didn't know what to make of the situation. One moment Randhir was standing before him, the next moment he left as if he hadn't heard a word that was being said to him. And to top that, Sanyukta rushed after him like she knew exactly what was going on!
"Hi Parth!" Kaustuki greeted him, "Waiting for Sanyu?"
Parth returned her smile and replied, "Hey Kaustuki, I was wondering...umm...tonight's our last night in FITE...Maybe we should have a party or something? A little get-together?"
Kaustuki's face brightened at the idea!
"Of course we should! I will tell Sanyu immediately."
And she turned to look for her best friend. But Sanyukta was nowhere to be seen.
"Parth, where is Sanyu?" a worried Kaustuki asked.
"I was talking with Randhir, but he left abruptly. And Sanyukta followed him god knows where. I haven't seen her since!" came Parth's reply.
Kaustuki made a face and said, "That Randhir is a jerk. God knows what new trouble he is brewing for Sanyu..."
But Parth cut her off and pointed behind her. Kaustuki turned to see Sanyukta hurrying towards her, looking agitated.
"Sanyukta, where were u?" asked Kaustuki and Parth in unison.
"Kaustuki, I need ur help", she said.
"Haan, bolo...what's wrong? Is Randhir bothering u?"
"Randhir? Bothering? No No...umm...actually I was wondering...umm...we should plan a party.."
Before Sanyukta could complete, Kaustuki squealed in delight, "That's what Parth & I were discussing just now! U spoke our mind sanyu!!!"
"Kaustuki wait, listen...I wanted to throw a party for Randhir!"
Kaustuki's face fell..."U what??" she asked, totally perplexed!
Parth on the other hand smiled a little. He understood what Sanyukta was trying to do. The few moments he spent with Randhir was enough to tell him that the guy was a loner...A recluse who seldom opened up. Parth also knew that somewhere deep down Sanyukta had unresolved feelings for him.
"That's a great idea Sanyukta. We should totally do it! I will be glad to assist", he told her.
"Thanks Parth. That's very generous of u!" Sanyukta responded and then looked at Kaustuki for approval.
"Ok...if u insist...U must have ur reasons for doing this Sanyu, so i won't oppose! Wait, I will tell jiggy and ask him to meet us!"
"Thank u thank u thank u Kaustuki", exclaimed an excited Sanyukta, "Meet me & Parth at the mechanical lab and bring Jiggy. Come soon."
And they parted ways. Kaustuki went to fetch Jiggy and Parth & Sanyukta proceeded towards the lab.
~0~
MECHANICAL LAB:
If anyone had seen the place before, they wouldn't believe that it was a normal lab. It had now been transformed into this huge space filled with the most intricate machines. The tables containing the different apparatus had been joined together, while the machines had been set up in such a way that the lab looked like a museum of sorts, decorated by them!
"Done", exclaimed Parth.
"Finally", replied a tired Kaustuki.
"This looks really nice Sanyukta. Randhir bhai will love it, 'm sure!" muttered Jiggy, "But how do we call him here?"
Sanyukta was looking around the room, a sense of pride evolving in her. It was their lab and the way they had set it up, it now looked fabulous!
"Leave that upto me", she told Jiggy, "I will call him!"
~0~
He didn't know for how long he had been standing there, leaning on the railing. He could see all the students out on the grounds, celebrating their last night together. He felt something hot on his face. He felt it and realized he had been crying unknowingly. It was the loneliest he felt in years. Randhir Singh Shekhawat was lost and he didn't know how he would recover from here.
His phone vibrated.
He debated for a moment whether to pick it up or not.
Finally he reached for it and saw 'Sanyukta calling' flashing on the screen.
A part of him immediately felt like stuffing the phone back into his pocket. But another small part wanted to talk to her. Maybe she would do something to ease his pain.
"Hello", he said huskily, trying his best to mask his current state of emotions.
"Randhir hey", came her reply, "Umm..I was wondering...could u...I mean would u please come down to the lab?"
"The lab? What for? Agarwal, now's not the best time. I am kinda preoccupied."
"Randhir, just come here once..please...Just for once.."
Randhir considered for a while...There were 2 things he could do. He could go to the lab and see why Sanyukta was being so desparate. Or he could keep standing on the rooftop and wallow in self-pity! He chose option 1 and replied, "Fine I will be there.."
"Thank u...come quick, ok?" replied an elated Sanyukta .
Randhir hung up the phone, took one last glance at the hordes of students partying around the campus and made his way towards the lab.
~0~
Parth and Jiggy had taken it upon themselves to arrange food and drinks for the party. And once everything was set, all four of them awaited Randhir's arrival.
Randhir pushed open the lab door to be met with a chorus of 'Surprise' from the 4 people in the room. He paused at the entrance and looked around dumbfounded.
"A surprise party?" he thought.
And he gazed at the people present. Parth was giving him an apologetic look that clearly said "This is my way of making amends."
Kaustuki was staring at him almost expecting him to lash out at them.
Jiggy was fidgety and mumbled, "Randhir bhai, humne machines se room sajaye...aapko balloons pasand nhi na...toh..."
And he fell silent, afraid of getting ridiculed.
But Randhir's eyes found the girl standing near the food table. Her eyes were expectant and at the same time fearful. It almost seemed like she was holding her breathe, waiting for his reaction.
Randhir's voice failed him. He was touched deeply. No one had ever done anything for him. All his life he was made to believe that he was an inborn genius. Naturally, no one ever bothered to celebrate his achievements. They took him for granted. He spent the greater part of his life aiding his 'so-called' friends, while all he ever wanted was to get accepted not because he was 'needed', but because he was 'wanted'.
"All this for me?" he asked to the room at large.
"Yes. For u...Sanyukta planned it." It was Parth who replied.
Sanyukta felt uneasy suddenly.
"We all planned it", she quickly rectified. It wasn't missed by Randhir, her awkwardness. And he felt a gush of warmth towards her.
For the first time that evening randhir felt happy. He smiled - a smile that someone in the room was desparate to see. Sanyukta's heart melted and she fell for him all over again!
~0~
"So guys, let the party begin! Here's to FITE & RCE - the winners" Parth exclaimed. Sanyukta and Kaustuki had alreading started munching on the food.
"Aaah...I l-ove bu-r-ger-s" Sanyukta said to Kaustuki, her mouth full of their canteen's famous 'cheese burger'.
"My god Sanyu, yeh tumhara 3rd burger hain...Thoda sa rehem karo apne pe", replied Kaustuki, laughing at her friend's enormously large appetite.
"Kausy baby', Jiggy called out, "Yeh brownie try karo. I ordered it specially for u."
Kaustuki was overjoyed, but Sanyukta rolled her eyes & said, "Yahan toh apna romance bandh karo guys!"
The music was on in full swing. Parth had just played 'I live for the night - By Krewella' and Sanyukta wanted to dance. She spotted randhir mixing different flavoured drinks and trying to produce a mocktail. Sanyukta was in heavenly bliss. Her plan worked. Randhir was happy because of her.
She dragged Kaustuki away from Jiggy and started swaying to the music.
"U are really enjoying this aren't u Sanyu? Winning this fest really meant a lot to u...I can see that" Kaustuki exclaimed and joined her bestie in the dance.
Little did she know that for once it wasn't the trophy that caused Sanyukta's happiness.
Meanwhile, Randhir stood at one corner watching her intently. It was as if he was witnessing a different Sanyukta altogether. She had shed her hesitance and was now dancing her heart out with Kaustuki, unaware of her surroundings. He remembered their dance at the opening night. The feel of her hands in his, the proximity, the way they moved in perfect sync...he shivered involuntarily.
"U like her" came a voice and Randhir snapped to look at its owner.
Parth stood beside him, watching the two girls, a smile adorning his lips.
"U are crazy", randhir replied, a bit shocked at being caught staring at Sanyukta.
"Am I? Come on Randhir, look me in the eye and tell me u don't like her...Go on..." Parth challenged.
Randhir sighed.
"I am too complex to like anyone...I don't know how I feel about myself, let alone how I feel about her.."
"That's not true and u know it. She makes u better. Randhir, from what little i have known u, I have realized that u shut people away. U don't want anyone to see the darkness in u...But may be u are being too harsh on urself. We need people around us, people we can trust, people we can lean on..." Parth spoke calmly.
"Yeah? Well what happens if i tell u that trust hasn't taken me anywhere?" Randhir countered.
"What do u mean?" Parth asked.
"What I mean is, this 'trust' thing is way overrated. U never know who is going to stab u and when!"
Parth fell silent. He realized that Randhir was hiding something but didn't press on. Instead he diverted the topic and said, "So, this is it then. Last night in ur college and tomorrow we go our own ways! Don't u think it's time we call it a truce? U & me?"
Randhir didn't reply, but merely looked at him with a somewhat amused expression.
Parth shook his head in frustration and said, "U know ur ego surpasses even the 'everest' right? Do something about that, will u?"
And he turned to leave. But Randhir called out from behind,"Hey, 'm curious. U have lectured me on how I should reveal my 'inner' feelings and crap...What about u? I have seen how u look at Sanyukta. And guess what? I think u like her too. What do u have to say about that?"
Parth was shocked at what Randhir just said. For a guy who denied having any feelings towards the girl, he sure did sound protective of her.
Giving a rueful smile, parth replied, "I wish that was the case Randhir."
"What do u mean?" Randhir asked, his eyes narrowed.
"Randhir, she reminds me of someone, that's all. She is a living reminder of Parineeta."
"Who's Parineeta?"
"My sister. She was just like Sanyukta - ambitious, strong-willed and fiercely feminist. She passed away last year...brain tumour."
Randhir saw Parth's eyes fill up with tears, threatening to fall any moment. He felt pained to see someone suffering. He knew what it was like to have a traumatised past, as he had first-hand experience.
"I didn't know that. I am sorry...really" he said.
Parth smiled and wiped his eyes, "It's ok randhir. U didn't know."
"May be we should call it a truce afterall", Randhir told smiling.
"See, i told u. U just mask ur true nature with this 'apparently detached' exterior", Parth continued, now smiling broadly.
And just like that they exchanged an understanding look and a new friendship was built.
At that moment Parth was called by Jiggy and Randhir turned to look for Sanyukta. He wanted to thank her for making his evening special. He found her trying to sneak yet another burger past Kaustuki.
"This is the 5th, isn't it? he asked her, smirking.
Sanyukta yelped. She hadn't noticed him and was caught off gaurd.
"O-oh, Randhir", she said trying to hide the burger behind her, "Hey! I thought u were talking to Parth."
"Yeah i was. I just wanted to thank u...for today...and well, umm...for everything..."
Sanyukta's face showed her happiness. She replied smiling, "It's the least I could..i mean...we could do...U made that project which made us win...so.."
"So this was about the project was it?" Randhir enquired, watching her intently.
"No No...I mean..Yes...It was."
Sanyukta mentally cursed herself for the awkwardness she was feeling.
"Come on Sanyu, tell him u did it for him", spoke a voice inside her.
It was brawl between her heart and mind. Heart told her to reveal her feelings, while mind told her otherwise.
Randhir, on the hand, was smiling softly at her.
"Thanks farzi...I was having a rough day...I'm feeling much better now, all thanks to u. U know I never thought u would do something like this for me...I know it was ur idea, don't deny it...One thing though, what made u do this?" he asked, wanting to get some answers.
"Woh...I just...I saw u..."
But Sanyukta couldn't finish talking when Randhir's phone rang.
"Give me a sec", he told her and reached for his cell.
His face turned grim on seeing the caller ID.
"Excuse me Sanyukta", he said and moved away.
Sanyukta was confused. She wondered who had called him that made his face fall. She watched as he muttered something onto the speaker and then left the room.
Sanyukta decided to follow him. She didn't want his perfect evening to get spoilt. And judging by the look on his face, it looked like whoever called Randhir definately wasn't on his good books.
~0~
Randhir walked past scores of students as he made his way to towards his 'caller'. It was none other than Karan. Apparently the latter wanted to chat and had sounded 'urgent'.
He spotted Karan waiting for him.
"Talk", said Randhir, as soon as he reached his former best friend.
"Randhir, it was a mistake...Everything I did, it was wrong and I admit it. I let my anger get in the way. U are right, I am nothing without ur help."
Randhir was watching him intently. Was he apologising for real?? This was his chance to win his friend back. And he desparately wanted it. He knew his ego wouldn't allow him to bow down. But if Karan apologised and admitted his mistake, then things could surely go back to being how they were!
"So u admit u were wrong?" he asked.
"I do...I had no intention of hurting u...But Randhir I lost the seat in FITE because..."
Randhir cut him short and said, "Karan i know. May be i should have tried harder to keep u here. Do u honestly think that I was happy that u didn't get admission?.."
As Randhir was talking, Karan looked past him and saw Sanyukta lurking in the shadows, probably listening to their conversation. He smiled mentally and thought, "This is it...my chance...Go ahead Randhir...Say it..."
And Randhir continued, " Do u honestly think that I was happy that u didn't get admission? It left me devastated to realize that i couldn't do anything for u...I tried Karan. U know I wanted Sanyukta out of the college...But the girl was so persistant...and the rest is history...I don't need to repeat it..."
Karan interrupted, "Randhir I know u tried...But what angered me is u now hang out with her like she is our best friend or something..."
Randhir was exasperated. "She's not my best friend. U are. What the hell is ur problem yaar? U know she's a nobody and yet u went behind my back and compromised our friendship for something so silly as a girl. Stop bothering..."
And Randhir paused. He had a feeling he heard footsteps behind him. He turned to check, but no one was there.
So he continued, "Stop bothering about her Karan. Besides, she has proved everyone wrong, including me. She is a kickass engineer and deserves to stay here. And to be honest, she is someone i trust...So.."
Karan smiled. "I am sorry Randhir. If need be, i will apologize to her as well...But i can't lose my best friend. U are a family..."
Those words sounded like music to randhir's ears. Finally Karan said something that made sense. And so, the two best friends renewed their friendship and shared a hug!
All is well. Or so Randhir thought!
~0~
As soon as she saw Randhir walk out of the room, Sanyukta decided to follow him. The cursed phone had to ring at the prime moment, she thought. She was just about to tell him why she had organised the party.
She searched for him everywhere until she saw him with Karan.
Sanyukta facepalmed.
"So that's who called him. No wonder he looked irked. This bloody Karan will bitter his mood again. Shit yaar.."
Sanyukta decided that this time if things go bad, then she would intervene. But she wouldn't let Randhir suffer.
She approached them carefully and found that they were talking.
"Strange. Atleast they aren't strangling each other like before. Wonder what they are saying?" she thought and edged closer.
That's when she heard Randhir saying, " Karan i know. May be i should have tried harder to keep u here. Do u honestly think that I was happy that u didn't get admission? ? It left me devastated to realize that i couldn't do anything for u...I tried Karan. U know I wanted Sanyukta out of the college...But the girl was so persistant...and the rest is history...I don't need to repeat it..."
Sanyukta strained her ears to hear what exactly was going on. They were talking about her. Again.
She hoped randhir wouldn't be too harsh on Karan because of her.
Randhir continued saying, " She's not my best friend. U are. What the hell is ur problem yaar? U know she's a nobody and yet u went behind my back and compromised our friendship for something so silly as a girl. Stop bothering.."
Sanyukta felt numb. He just called her a 'nobody'...a silly girl...So that's all she was to him. A silly girl who fell for his charm...
She couldn't hear anymore of this. She wouldn't stand there and let her heart be shattered. So she ran. She didn't even try to stop the tears that fell.
Love. It is beautiful when returned, but painful when not! Sanyukta Agarwal learnt this the hard way.
~0~
As Karan retired for the night, he thought of how brilliantly his plan worked. He had heard Parth & Jiggy talking in the canteen about the party that Sanyukta had thrown for Randhir. That's when it struck him. He would hit Randhir where it hurt the most. Sanyukta. He would take the bitch out of the equation. She would pay for all that she had done! And he had succeeded.
~0~
Randhir hurried abck to the party. He had left abruptly, leaving Sanyukta without an explanation. Heck, he didn't even get to say a proper thank you. Besides, she was telling him something...Goddd, he had to talk to her.
He was in jovial mood. He wanted to tell Sanyukta that he & Karan had made up. He wanted to share...Wait! He wanted to share the news with her?
"Parth was right. She has entered my life and made her presence felt. Come to think of it, she has been there with me through all odds. True, we had been at loggerheads god knows how many times. But now things have changed. I have changed and so has she."
The thought just elevated his happiness. He rushed into the lab to find it empty. He looked around but no one was there.
He realized they must have all left. He felt a pang of guilt in heart. The party was for him and he bailed.
He tried Sanyukta's cell.
Switched off.
Now that was odd. Why would she switch off her cell?
He went back to his hostel hoping Jiggy would be there. But he wasn't.
"He must be out with Kaustuki..." Randhir hoped.
He tried Sanyukta's phone again. Same result.
Something was definately not right.
And Randhir Shekhawat would soon find out what!

A/N: All of ur lovely feedbacks may have made me paranoid, but I am somehow now satisfied with this update. I keep worrying that u guys will get bored at one point!! I hope I have managed to keep ur interest intact!
