Chapter-11

Khushi lay sprawled in her bed looking at the ceiling.

"I shouldn't have left you" Lavanya repeated once again to an oblivious Khushi.

"I'm so sorry Khush" Khushi to whom the apology was addressed said nothing. Her stare fixed at a point on ceiling.

"I'm talking to you Khush. And you stop thinking about him" Lavanya had enough. From the time she returned Khushi was lost in her own thoughts.

"I'm not thinking about Arnav Sir" Khushi replied too fast.

Lavanya opened her mouth to say something but closed completely surprised.

"I was talking about Shyam" Lavanya and NK had returned to the party after midnight to spend some time with Khushi and Arnav. But unfortunately Khushi had left with Arnav. They decided to catch up as they saw some of their friends and it was during those few minutes that Lavanya had come to know about Shyam's presence in the party. She felt guilty for leaving her friend behind without thinking about the moron who was hell bent to talk with her.

She had come home soon to check with Khushi if he had again tried to approach her. Khushi had told in a nutshell about him not wanting to dwell much on him. But the guilt didn't leave Lavanya, so she kept apologizing and strangely she later found that her friend had tuned her out.

Khushi was now in a fix. La was talking about Shyam, not Sir. Ugghhh!!! But how could she be blamed for her state after everything that happened. Was it abnormal if she was thinking about Arnav instead of Shyam? She thought it was better to come clean with her friend.

"La we both decided two days ago to leave that chapter behind. Shyam is where he belongs, in my past. Neither he nor his thoughts have any place in my present or future. He can try all he wants he will get nothing but a no from me. And strangely I don't think about him until and unless he comes in front of me" she kept quiet for a moment.

"I met his wife today and before you jump out with your gun, I'm fine. I was shocked initially. But she is a nice woman. It has been Shyam's loss completely."

Lavanya gave a small smile to her friend. "Khush I should have been there with you. I'm such a bad friend" she started only to be stopped by Khushi.

Khushi took her hand in hers and squeezed it gently.

"You had no idea that he will be there and as I said he is past. Oh and we can change that bit about you being a bad friend if you promise to take me out on lunch tomorrow before you catch your flight" she winked.

Lavanya laughed seeing the light side of Khushi come through.

"It's a deal but I still wish I was there. I feel like kicking that man"

"If it makes you feel better I slapped him hard once and later Arnav Sir punched him straight on his face"

"What? Arnav punched him? Oh I missed the action scene! Khushi you should have recorded it" Lavanya said her arms wide in excitement.

Khushi thought about the incident. She was facing Arnav's back but she had still been able to feel his body quiver in pure rage. Somehow she had a suspicion if it was not for her trembling touch on his arm; Arnav won't have stopped with one punch. She had seen his angry eyes as he turned but he had masked it soon before being replaced by a different emotion something similar to concern as he checked her hands for any signs of harm.

"Khush you're getting lost again" Lavanya smiled naughtily.

Khushi made a face in response and both friends lied down next to each other closing their eyes; Khushi thinking about the source of the teasing and Lavanya smiling thinking that leaving Khushi behind was actually a good mistake.

Khushi hesitantly stepped in the office. The first day of the year was an off making her relax. The last day was fun as she spent the whole day with Lavanya. NK had joined them in the evening. They spend hours sitting in the cafeteria with NK sharing their stories of college making Khushi laugh till her stomach hurt. The farewell had been teary with both Khushi and Lavanya crying. NK had joked that they were behaving as if it was Lavanya's bidaayi going on earning a look from both the girls. Her home had felt empty to her after living with Lavanya for two weeks. But she had told herself that she will hardly get time off from work to think about anything else. And as she stepped in AR, memories from New Year's night came rushing to her.

Khushi kept fidgeting as she sat down on her seat. She was confused thinking about the kiss. Did it mean anything or was it just a way to wish for new year? Khushi decided it was better if she let go of such wayward thoughts; there was no point thinking about it, so she rubbished it as one of the mannerisms of elite people but was determined to tell Arnav off if he tries to repeat it. She was mumbling to herself when Arnav entered the office.

"Khushi in my cabin"

Khushi took a deep breath getting up as Sim came to stop next to her, her mouth slightly open.

"What?" Khushi nudged her.

"He is in a different mood today. He called you by your name then his usual Ms. Gupta"

"Different means good or bad?" her voice almost a whisper.

"You never know with ASR" Sim replied adding an All the Best as an afterthought making Khushi squirm.

She thought about it but for her it was not for the first time. Arnav has called her by first name on various occasions - Chandigarh, La's engagement, New Year and the moment before he kissed her last night. A deep shade of pink tinged her cheeks at her last thought. Facing him after last night would be difficult for her and she felt the nervousness now.

"Close the door" Arnav said as soon as she entered his cabin.

Khushi gulped in hesitation. Arnav was looking at her with an unfathomable expression. Her perplexed mind was of being no help either. It was not the first time that they were behind closed doors but still it felt new. Khushi silently closed the door taking the time to calm down.

Khushi tried to think of reasons which would erase the effect he was having on her. Arnav got up from his seat and moved towards her. He resembled the predator coming to hunt down his prey. You are Khushi not some poor prey. Act and act fast!

"Did you see the presentation?" It was good if she kept things professional. No discussion about the last night.

This one sentence halted Arnav in his tracks but only momentarily.

He gave a shrug to his shoulders "No. Why don't you tell me about it?" he asked encircling her like a tiger.

Khushi started talking avoiding looking at him; her attention on pulling her dupatta nervously around her neck. As she stopped at the end she realized that though Arnav was still looking at her, he had not ignored any of her words as he asked few questions related to the presentation. How does he multitasks so efficiently?

Khushi put his schedule for the day on his table and moved away. She had just turned when his words halted her forcing her to turn and face him again.

"I want to talk to you"

"For what?" she feigned ignorance thinking Ignorance is bliss. But unfortunately for her, Arnav was in no such mood. He knew what she was trying to do but he was done running away from her and his own feelings.

"About last night and before you again go on asking your whats & whys, let me assure you that I remember each and every detail. I won't even mind reminding you in case you've forgotten" he said calmly taking a step towards her making her take one back being taken by surprise.

"I remember" she said taking a deep breath.

"Although I never asked for your help and was completely capable of taking care of myself, thanks for doing what you did" Ignorance is bliss. Ignorance is bliss.

Arnav was amused with her. She truly thinks she can do anything. She actually can. Look at yourself.

"You think too highly of yourself. But that's not the point here. I was talking about the part of the night after I wished you in front of your house. You know when I..."

Khushi schooled her expressions in a scowl but the lightest tinge of rose coloring her cheeks gave away the blush and nervousness.

"That meant nothing"

"Tumhari naak laal ho gayi hai" he said flicking her nose.

"That's because... because.. because of cold" she completed considering it a fitting reply.

"I like you"

"Whh..hat" Khushi looked up at him. His expressions were serious; it was no joke. She couldn't pretend anymore. Time to run away was lost.

"I don't reciprocate your feelings" she told him in a flat tone. This was what she had decided to tell him but she didn't understand that why in some corner of her heart she felt bad telling him these words.

"You do" he told flatly. It was a statement and not mere words to convince her.

"You know nothing. You perceive that I like you as you perceive that you like me. But the truth is it's not more than a passing attraction"

"Let me decide for myself"

"Fine if you want to fool yourself, go ahead. But let there be no doubt about my thoughts on the same. I don't.." Before she could complete her words, she heard his confident voice.

"Maanogi, tum bhi maanogi"

"In your dreams" she scoffed.

"You really don't want to know about my dreams now, do you?" a mischievous glint was present in his eyes and his mouth curved in a smirk.

Khushi looked surprised for a moment thinking what he exactly meant.

"Rehne do, tum seh nahi paogi" he said with a naughty smile growing on his lips.

Khushi now completely understood what he was trying to do. He was trying to unsettle her with his insinuation.

Badtameez

"Badtameezi to maine abhi shuru bhi nahi ki hai" Arnav said in a teasing tone surprising Khushi making her realize that she has said her previous words aloud.

Khushi turned hastily taking long steps almost breaking in a run not wanting to hear more of his words. She didn't know how to handle him. She could handle his anger but not this flirtatious side. It was too much for her little brain.

Arnav smiled to himself. Khushi was the first girl he felt so strongly for. The possessiveness she evokes in him can only be compared to his family. This brought a smile on his face. She was always special for him otherwise nobody could have been alive after naming him Rakshas. Even after getting a handful from him she still didn't change his name. And then the way she chews on her lower lip when tensed and nervous - has she ever thought what it did to him? Thodi pagal hai but cute hai!

Khushi bolted to sitting position now wide awake. She was dreaming of Arnav. This is all because of him - Rakshas. Now I'm dreaming about that night again and again. If this dream was not enough for last three days, it has gone a step forward! Hey Devi Maiyya! Please forgive me.

For last three consecutive nights Khushi was awaking midnight dreaming about Arnav kissing her. The same kiss he had bestowed upon him on New Year but there were few changes happening each time. If in her first dream, she saw her own self blushing hard as his lips had touched her cheek before running away, next night she had not ran away and in fact has hugged him, and next night she had kissed him too making her heart go wild even in her sleep.

If the last dreams were not enough, tonight she saw him kissing her - placing his sinful lips on hers making her breathless.

This is all because of him. If he had not said those words I would have been at peace. Does he dreams like this about me? Is this what he meant that day? Khushi shook her head in an attempt to clear her mind of his thoughts. He is doing this on purpose. If he thinks I'll say yes to him by such cheap tricks, he is mistaken. I don't like him. Laad Governor!

Khushi's behavior was no deterrent for Arnav because he was sure that his feelings were reciprocated. It was just Khushi who was not ready to accept it. Even when negative thoughts used to clamp his mind he shooed them away. Khushi not being his was an option he never considered. He had led all his life on his own without any emotional attachment to any person who was not a part of his family and today when he knew the pull was strong he would not let anyone spoil it, not even Khushi - his happiness in every sense. Khushi was in a denial mode, not him. He would do whatever it takes to keep her with him. And till the time comes when she accepts it on her own, her dreams would have to do. He would simply help her to realize her feelings with his words. Arnav knew the effect of them on Khushi. Her angry retort comes but only after her face gets adorned with his favorite color, red.

As they had little dissimilarities they had few similarities too - like they were both stubborn-headed and right now they both were thinking that the other will come around agreeing to their thoughts.
