Chapter 39B - Assent

A surge of passion flew through Arnav as Khushi started her innocent assault on him, her body fit perfectly against his as he ground her core into him with the hand at the small of her back. The soft moan that rose from the back of her throat only increased his desire for her at the moment, making him groan himself as her fingers pulled him closer. She wrenched her lips away from his, only to move them to his jaw and further down as she nipped at his skin. It was then that some sane - or was it insane? - voice at the back of his head made him still the hands that were roaming her body as he stopped his ministrations. He pushed her away gently, sighing as he did and managing to step away from her.

He took a few steady breaths, wanting to laugh out loud at the state she could put him in. "Khushi, we have to stop now before I get carried away."

He turned around to see her angelic face pouting at him, her soft smile making a reappearance as she approached him again, winding her hands around his waist while her eyes were locked with his the entire time.

"Khushi..." He warned. He was sure she would kill him. Had he known that his gestures of wanting to make her happy would awaken this brazen side of her, he would have done it at a much more convenient time.

She rested her head against his chest, her face fitting perfectly against the crook of his neck as she placed a kiss on the base of his throat. "I love you Arnav."

"You know I wish we could carry on with this...but Khushi, the show is on really soon. We both still have to get ready, check on things and..."

She had raised her head at this point, a small smile playing on her lips as she waited for him to continue.

He lifted his fingers to her chin, making their gazes meet evenly as he proceeded.

"I don't want anything rushed between us; I want our first time to be perfect. That is the least that you deserve. So if you continue this..." He smirked, "I can't promise I'll be able to control myself."

She sighed, and gave him a shy smile before nodding. He was right of course; she wanted everything between them to be as perfect as could be. She was caught up in the desire he had awakened in her, she wanted him more than anything. However, not like this. There was no rush for anything, they had time and that sensation made her feel as though she was the luckiest girl in the world. Because he understood her, and he was willing restrain him for her happiness. And the thought brought waves of gratefulness to her being. She wanted everything when it came to Arnav, whatever he had to give and she wanted him to take whatever she could grant. They were each other's, and that was all that mattered to her.

She pecked him on the cheek once before moving away from him, removing her fingers from his, feeling his skin until the tips met and then drifted away. "I'll get ready, and see you later."

As soon as she turned around, the smile still lingering on her face, she stopped in her tracks as she heard his voice.

"Wait." His husky voice called out to her.

When she turned back, staring at him in slight confusion, but more than that wanting to run back into his arms, she waited for him. She would always.

"I love you too." His molten caramel eyes seared through her, and she knew if she stayed for another moment she would ruin all the decisions they had made only moments ago. And so she ran away, the feeling of elation never leaving her even as she closed the door to her dressing room where Arnav was no longer in sight. The wide mirror in front of her presented her reflection, a glowing Khushi. A sight she had not seen so clearly. The smile not wanting to leave her face, even though her mind told it to. Would she ever get sick of the feeling? She was purely in love, she had fallen hard. She looked at her reflection once more, touching her face, the skin of her cheeks, before another smile broke out and she covered her face with both hands.

----

Lavanya stared out at the view from the terrace, watching the flashing cars, the blurring lights, the people roaming about. The youngsters going out for a party, dressing to perfection and not having a care in the world. Her somber eyes moved to her baby, the bulge of her stomach. She rubbed a hand lovingly over her child, not willing any tears to fall that threatened to spill. She loved her baby, more than her own life. Not only her baby, she loved the father. She loved the idea of their family, her own. She no longer wanted what she saw below, the party life. She had her share, she wanted this. What she currently had. No more, no less.

It was in this state that NK found her, sitting alone on the terrace, watching the horizon as evening dawned upon them. He took a seat beside her quietly, no sign of her acknowledging his presence. He had often come to find her as such, crying or upset. And he found it his duty to make her feel better, to make that smile reappear on her face. He shook his head, taking his words back. It was more than a duty; it was what he wanted to see, needed to see.

"Lav, what's wrong?" He questioned softly, taking her hand in his, and then stared at her blankly when she didn't hold his hand back.

"How is she?" Lavanya asked, her voice deadpan.

"Who?" NK frowned, his heart rate picking up at her tone.

"Khushi. You were on the phone with her." Lavanya managed to rasp out.

"K...Khushi?" NK asked. "She's...she's fine. We were just catching up on things...life in general. I was just about to tell you we had a chat. I haven't talked to her in so long, who knows how many months." NK said. "She's my closest friend Lav." NK smiled.

Lavanya felt the sob rack her body, and saw from her peripheral vision how NK's eyes widened in alarm. "Lavanya? Please, tell me what this is about. Is it Khushi? I can explain, it's not what you think!" NK tried. "I don't feel that way about her anymore, we're both happy in our lives. I promise, I wouldn't have it any other way...she loves Arnav. She always has, and god Lavanya, I'm so happy for them. And I..." He started, and watched as her coal black eyes looked up at him, her pain piercing his very being.

"Tell me what's wrong. Please." NK urged.

"It's my fault." Lavanya said softly, it was almost inaudible. How would he understand the guilt that spread through her?

"Fault? What's your fault?" NK asked, his eyebrows furrowing further.

"This. Everything that you have gone through...it's my fault. I did it." She looked at her lap, not being able to meet his gaze.

"I have no clue what you're talking about, but you're scaring me Lav." NK said.

She stood up abruptly, no longer bearing to be so close to him. "You had it all. It was perfect...you loved Khushi and you could have had everything you dreamed of. If not for me." Lavanya admitted.

NK stared, not knowing what to think, what to utter, merely waiting for her to continue.

"I ruined it...that night. I just can't keep it in anymore NK! I've gone sick with the guilt; it's eating away at me." Lavanya turned to him with her tear stained face. "And after hearing you talk to her...listening to you tell her you're happy...with me!" She shook her head, "I can't."

Here, NK had assumed she was upset over him talking to Khushi. Perhaps she had heard him tell her that he missed her, and had misunderstood him. However, she was upset over hearing that he had told Khushi that he was happy with her?

"I knew what was going on with Arnav and Khushi...that there was something between them. That night...when we went out for dinner...I knew you were going to propose, I also knew that if I left them alone, something was bound to happen. All those pent up feelings of theirs, the past...it would lead to something that night. And so...I left them at the restaurant. But I stuck around, knowing what was to come." She whispered, watching as NK's face paled.

"And it was true, you heard everything that night. The truth ruined you, as I knew it would. And there I was...waiting for you. It wasn't just perfect timing NK" she cried, "I had a feeling of how it would play out. And I was the shoulder you leant on...just as I wanted to be."

He let out a breath he did not know he had been holding in, feeling the air whoosh out of his lungs. He stared at her for some time, his gaze unwavering as he searched for the answers in her eyes. However, he already knew. What was the point of further searching when the truth had been laid bare in front of him?

"You..." NK began and was not sure where to end.

"I'm sorry...so sorry." She sobbed, shaking her head.

"Why?" He asked simply.

"Why? NK I've always had feelings for you. Seeing you after so many years only reminded me so much of what I had been trying so hard to forget. You had always made me feel special...you were different than all those other guys. You actually cared, and I had never felt that way before. The day you broke it off...gosh, I was broken. And I heard the name Khushi when you were on the phone with her; I learned to hate the faceless name. Then later, I started working with Arnav, and I of course tried to my chance with him. As I tried with so many before, hoping someone would make me forget. But he was taken...it was in his eyes. He kept his distance, not just from me, but from all the women. And then...at that party...I saw this Khushi. I saw the longing Arnav's eyes held for her. I saw the way you looked at her, and when I was told that you were a changed man...no longer the flirting type whose life had once consisted of nothing but flings...my hatred grew. For Khushi. She had managed to get everyone, wrapped around her finger...that was how I saw it at least. And so I wanted..." She let more tears fall as she looked away from him. "I wanted to see her suffer, I wanted my friend Arnav to somehow get what he wished for...and I wanted you back."

"So you...planned all of this?" He asked.

"Not the pregnancy NK! That was the last thing I had thought of...I just wanted you. I wanted to see her face when she found out. And I successfully managed to break you both apart. But this," she pointed to her stomach, and shook her head. "I didn't think..."

"I can't believe this..." NK whispered.

"I know...you have every right to hate me." Lavanya wiped away her tears, watching him carefully.

He shook his head slowly, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. "And despite all of this, I can't even hate you Lavanya."

"NK, I..." She searched for the words, everything she could say, anything she could say. Yet nothing came, and she merely watched in silence.

"I just need to be alone for some time. Please." He muttered, before turning and walking away.

----

Khushi paced back and forth, chewing on her lower lip and glancing at the clock from time to time. "It's going to be okay, right?"

Siddharth turned to her, as if caught out of a trance and raised his eyebrows. "Huh?"

"You're not even paying attention to me. Who were you staring at?" Khushi narrowed her eyes and craned her neck to view passed the models backstage.

"What! No one Khushi Di. I'm sorry, what were you saying?" He asked.

Khushi looked past the various models all dressed to perfection, as her eye caught another woman. Dressed in a simple anarkali suit, she spoke into her headset frantically and a smile formed on Khushi's lips as she gazed at Diya.

She quickly hid her smile and looked back to her cousin, figuring that she would do something about it later. "I'm just nervous...I don't know. What if something rips? On stage?!" She wondered aloud, as if suddenly the realization dawned upon her.

"Khushi Di, would you relax? Everything will be fine." Siddharth assured, giving her hand a squeeze. "Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?"

"Nope." Khushi grinned.

She had worn a lehenga choli today, bright red and gold with zari work highlighting the border. There were gold jhumkas in her ears, and a beautiful golden necklace set adorning her neck. Her Buaji had taken her time finding all the jewellery she had saved up for her, ranging from her own to her Amma's. She had decided to go with a more traditional look, as the AR line was such, therefore set in Lucknow in the first place.

"Well I must say, I'm lucky to be related to such good looking people." He smiled warmly.

"By people' I assume you are talking about your sister as well? That must be a first if you are complimenting her!"

"Are you kidding? I was talking about you and Ma." Siddharth said, tongue in cheek as Khushi laughed and shook her head.

"Speaking of the showstopper, I wonder how she is holding up!" Khushi wondered aloud, knowing very well that her cousin would be freaking out at this point. "I will go check on her quickly."

----

On the other hand, Payal was hyperventilating in her dressing room, knowing very well that tonight was a big night for her. There would be people watching, from all over the world. This was her chance to shine...for people to notice her. She knew Akaash had not chosen her for any other reason, other than the fact that he had faith in her...he knew she was capable enough and a surge of pride soared through her at the thought. She watched the women around her, in charge of getting her ready...pinning the deep maroon dupatta over her head and pinning it to her side. The other woman fixing her curls, and the smell of hairspray filling Payal's senses momentarily. The third woman was up in her face, curling the tip of the mascara brush one last time against Payal's eyelashes. When they had completed, she turned in her chair and glanced at herself in the mirror, unable to believe it was truly her! Was it really her, looking as stunning as she did? Her heart rate sped up, the nervousness spreading through her veins in the process.

"Payal?" Khushi called out softly, her eyes scanning the room before falling on her. "Gosh you look gorgeous!" Khushi gasped, walking over to her.

"Thanks Khushi Di." Payal said hesitantly, trying to take deep breaths in and out.

"Nervous?"

"Very." Payal admitted, watching her fumbling fingers in her lap.

"Don't be. You'll be amazing. Once it's over, I bet it will be nothing but a feeling of elation Payal. Think about it, this is like your dream come true!" Khushi said excitedly.

A smile formed on Payal's lips, her nervousness momentarily forgotten as she thought about the possible aftermath - that was, if matters went smoothly. "You're right. It's still nerve-wracking."

"I can imagine. I'd be ten times worse if I were in your position." Khushi chuckled, fixing up her outfit to perfection before smiling at her younger cousin. "Let's get you outside and ready." She reached for Payal's hand to pull her up from the chair she was seated in, only to have her squeeze Khushi's hand tightly in attempt to stop her.

"Wait. I need to say something."

Khushi frowned, suddenly worried at the wary look on Payal's face. "What's wrong?"

"I want to apologize. Just hear me out." She said at the look Khushi gave her, about to interrupt her midway. "I'm sorry for being such a horrible cousin. I've never been nice to you, have I?" Payal said, disappointed with herself.

"I always felt Ma favoured you over me...despite being her actual daughter. And I always had to hear Why can't you be more like Khushi?', and it sucked because it was true. Why couldn't I? Anyways, you have been nothing but caring towards me. Always. Despite everything you have been through, I am sure an extra shoulder would have been nice to lean on, other than Sid and Ma. But I was always out, doing my own thing. And so...I just wanted to say sorry for that. I can't promise anything, but I will try my best to be a better cousin." Payal finished by breathing out and raising her eyes to her cousin's with a sheepish smile on her face.

"Payal, I'm sorry you felt that way. I am sorry you felt as if you were not good enough, because ultimately it is not true at all. You are you, and I am myself. Why try to be like someone else, that you are not? You are perfect like you are. And well...I guess because I had no one else...Buaji always gave me more attention than necessary. I am sorry you felt side lined Payal. But...I do wish you had come to talk to me about it. We could have avoided all this..." Khushi gestured between themselves with a tender smile.

"I promise, next time there is an issue, I will come to you and tell you about it Khushi Di." Payal said solemnly.

"Good." Khushi grinned. "Now enough of this, we have somewhere important to be, don't you think?"

Payal's breathing sped up again as she realized it was truly time to go.

"Relax." Khushi squeezed Payal's hand as they walked out.

----

"Ladies and gentlemen," the chattering amongst one another came to a halt, the critical gazes moving to be fixed upon the man on stage. The aura, the presence, one could not move their eyes away from Arnav Singh Raizada in all his glory. The husky voice sending shivers down backs, women desiring, men loathing, and all eyes were suddenly trained on him.

"Welcome to the annual AR fashion event. We are honoured to be presenting to you, our very latest collection. It is an evening to enjoy, a night of elegance and glamour. We hope you all enjoy your evening, thank you." Arnav gave his charming smile to the audience and the roaring applause made its way forward.

He walked with poise backstage, hearing the shuffling of feet, watching the dimming of lights, the models walking about and fixing their outfits one last time. But what truly caught his attention among all the ruckus was Khushi who seemed to have come out of a room. A loving smile formed on his lips, and he somehow managed to look away and not walk over to her and carry her off somewhere.

A sigh escaped his lips, not one of impatience or disregardance. One of feeling at ease, at peace with one self. As he watched from backstage, he realized just how far everyone had come.

Months ago, he had no idea where him and Khushi would end up, how they would end up. There was a point where he had lost a tiny bit of faith; there were also moments in which he had felt weak enough to forfeit from it all. However, life had different plans, a different way in leading him somewhere where happiness truly resided, where there was Khushi. And as he watched the show play out flawlessly in front of his very eyes, the audience glued to the designs, the fascination...he took a moment to thank whoever, or whatever was responsible for making it all possible. For all the hard work him and Khushi and everyone else who was involved, had paid off brilliantly. It was nothing new, his shows had been successful whenever presented, however this was special in the sense that Khushi had been with him throughout.

Gratefulness had never come to him easily prior to Khushi's presence in his life. Sometimes, life threw matters your way with hurdles placed in the midst. And other times, life could seem as if it was a bed of roses. It could be simple to get carried away with the latter, and not appreciate what was in front of you. You expect whatever it is that you have, to stay. Because it came so easily? He had learned the hard way, to hold on to whatever was dear to him, Khushi being the prime example.

She had always loved him, however categorized. It was unconditional as kids, teenagers, and now it had turned into a stronger sensation as they became adults. He had taken her for granted, not expecting that one day she would disappear from his life. That he would have to wish to catch just a glimpse of her for years. That one day he would have to see her with someone else. However, there was none of that anymore. Even now, with all the barriers broken and nothing in the way of stopping them from being with one another, he would make sure she knew just how special she was to him, everyday.

He suddenly found his hand being enclosed by a softer one as he felt the silk like sensation of her skin. She stood beside him, already at his side by just the mere thought of her, smiling as she peeked outside as well to get a good look at the show. Think of the angel, and the angel shall appear, he mused. Arnav refrained from looking at her, only tightening his hand because he knew he would be lost otherwise, get carried away. She looked utterly stunning tonight. And it did not help that he had other matters at hand at the moment.

The end seemed to have arrived as swiftly as the beginning. Khushi's hand tightened in Arnav's when Payal walked down the ramp, showing no traces of nervousness in her stance, and the roaring applause erupted from the audience. What neither Arnav nor Khushi caught, was the wide grin that had formed on Akaash's face, almost shining with pride. He could feel the happiness emanating from Khushi for Payal.

As customary, Arnav was expected to make an appearance at the end as Payal walked towards the backstage area. Khushi removed her hand from his, letting him go, however Arnav only entwined their fingers together and started his stride forward. Khushi's eyes widened dramatically, trying to pry her fingers away, but to no avail.

"Arnav, what are you doing?" She asked fearfully under her breath. And suddenly, the spotlight was on them, another round of applause made way to Khushi's ears and she felt as if her legs had turned into jelly at this point. Arnav made way to remove his hand and place it around her waist instead, as if he had read her mind. Still holding her close, and Khushi's thoughts running wild with confusion, they somehow made their way to the end of the ramp where the only thing she could do was stare at Arnav in awe. What was he doing!

"Before I leave you all to enjoy the rest of your evening, I would like to take a moment to thank the woman beside me."

Khushi froze in his arms, not expecting to hear the words she had just heard. She stared at his face, waiting for him to continue as her heart fluttered on. Her mouth was slightly agape as she moved her eyes to stare forward.

"Not only is she one of the most important people in my life right now, and not only is she one of the sole reasons for the success of tonight's event, she is also the inspiration for our next fashion line named after her. A big round of applause for Miss Khushi Kumari Gupta."

An applause broke out once more around her, as she scanned the people around her from left to right. A blush made way to her cheeks, staining her skin in a shade of pink. She looked to her side, only to find Arnav smiling at her so charmingly, she could have sworn her heart skipped a beat. She managed to give a nervous smile to the people around her, wishing they would stop the applause lest her face get even warmer than it was.

The rest was a blur; she heard reporters from the audience calling out to him. Perhaps asking about them, making assumptions about their relationship? It did not matter to her what people made of it, and she sure as hell knew it meant nothing to Arnav who expeditiously led her off the ramp, backstage.

-------

NK sat alone on the sofa in his room, typing away on his laptop. However it was all nonsensical. His mind was elsewhere, he was terribly upset. He could not remember when he had last felt this way...it had been that long. His mind was at war with itself, not understanding what he should think. What was he supposed to do after whatever Lavanya had just told him?

He set his laptop aside and let his head fall into his hands, massaging his temples to relieve some of the tension. Everything in his vision seemed bleary, and he felt mentally exhausted at the moment. Despite all the commotion in his head, he managed to hear the door behind him creaking open. Not bothering to turn, he stayed in his current position and tried to remain calm.

"NK...?" Lavanya called out softly, her voice almost sounded choked.

Not wanting to see anyone, or talk with anyone, he stood his ground and did not relent to the voice in his head that told him to turn around and gather her in his arms because he knew she was hurting just as well.

"I want to be alone right now Lavanya." He stated plainly.

"Please...NK, listen..." Her voice broke in the midst, and something caused NK to turn around and look at her.

Her face was tear stained, one hand clutching the sofa while the other was placed on her stomach. "NK...the baby..." She cried.

"Lavanya?!" He immediately got out of his seat and reached out to her, as she held on to him for support. She cried out in pain again as her breathing became more laboured.

He heard his own voice, screaming for the rest of the family members. He saw his own hand reach out for the phone as he called for an ambulance. But mostly he felt Lavanya writhe in pain and he perceived that he had never been so scared in his life.

---

It was as if she had entered an entirely new place, as if she had not been here for the entire day. Perhaps because all the chaos had been extinguished, leaving the place with an afterglow. The seats now empty, the ramp no longer being shone on with the spot light, and the voices of various people around her could no longer be heard.

She sat by herself at the edge of the ramp, her feet dangling below her as she smiled to herself. Night had fallen, as she waited for Arnav to come get her. He had said to wait for him, while he looked at some last minute matters before they left. She had concluded that it had been one of the best days she had experienced so far. The success of the show, talking with NK, and of course...just Arnav. He could make any day special with his mere presence.

She sighed, deciding to get up and look for him as she pushed up on her palms and swung her feet around. As she stood properly, she came face to face with him and a grin broke out.

"Hi." He said huskily, his eyes smiling at her as he reached for her body.

Pulling her flush against his body, her hands automatically made their way up his biceps, to rest on his shoulders. "Everything okay?" She asked.

"Perfect." He placed a kiss on her nape, gently swaying their bodies to some unknown tune in his head.

"So, when did you plan this?" She asked casually.

"Plan what?" He frowned, before dipping his head to kiss her jaw.

"Your next fashion line being named Khushi."

He shrugged nonchalantly, his smile growing until his eyes crinkled around the corners. "I did not plan anything, it is called inspiration."

She giggled, shaking her head as she placed her chin on his shoulder, while he made sure there was no space between their bodies.

"We're all alone here, aren't we?" Khushi asked softly, breathing into his neck, and she felt him nod slowly against her.

"Who knew, Arnav Singh Raizada could be so romantic." She laughed.

"On second thought...who knows there may be some media around...especially after what I said about you. I bet they're all dying to know what's truly going on." He rolled his eyes.

"I bet...does that mean we'll be questioned a lot?"

"I don't think so. It will all be out in the open soon enough, they will have all their answers and then get bored because there will be nothing left to ask." Arnav said evenly, making Khushi's eyebrows furrow.

"What do you mean..."

Her question was interrupted by a shrill ringing of Arnav's phone, cutting through their conversation. "Don't mind that." He made way to pull her back, however she shook her head.

"At least check who it is. It could be important!"

He sighed realizing she was right, and saw his sister's name flashing on his caller ID.

"Yes Di?" He answered, and his eyes widened slightly soon after as shock appeared clearly on his face. "What!? Is she okay? Ok...Ok...we'll be there."

As he hung up, Khushi stared on in question, waiting for him to tell her what was wrong. "Arnav?"

"Lavanya's in the hospital. There were some complications and it's not looking too good at the moment."

----

"Your baby presents to be in a difficult position...the umbilical cord has become tangled so we need to take your wife to get a C-section. However, it could prove to be both dangerous for the baby and the mother. We need to get oxygen to the baby immediately. If by any chance, we are left to choose..." The doctor in front of NK asked in a gentle but urgent tone, causing NK's worst fears to come true.

Choose? Between his baby and Lavanya?

How could he do something as such? He looked around at his family members surrounding him, all masks of worry etched onto their faces. What was he supposed to do? He should not have stressed her out at this stage...he should have let go whatever he had told her. Then this would not have been happening today...

A kaleidoscope of memories flashed through his mind, of all the moments he had held so dearly to him for the past months.

"That's our baby. A girl..." She stared at the screen in front of her, presenting the ultrasound.

"I'm not a baby NK, I can get up!" Her coal black eyes glaring at him.

"I'm craving ice-cream...I don't know, I've just been eating so much..." She smiled sheepishly.

"Anya? I like it." She admitted.

"I think the baby just kicked." Her expression full of wonder, her lips curving upwards in awe.

"I'm serious NK! What if I'm a horrible mother?" She had sobbed.

"Well, I thought you've been really stressed lately and you needed a nice dinner to relax."

"Look, NK...I just wanted to do this to thank you. For everything really..."

"The mother." He took a deep breath before speaking, his whole body shivering. "If you need to choose...save the mother please."

Previous : Chapter 39A Next : Chapter 40

Hi everyone! I'm so so sorry for the delay. I was away for a couple of weeks, then returned to tons of work and then a bit of writers block...not fun. But hope you guys enjoyed the chapter! One more to go, followed by an epilogue and then we are done 😊

Do leave any thoughts or comments, I always love reading them!

Speaking of comments, I hate to say this and I'm sure the majority of you guys already know this. So writing "update soon" and "congratulations" on threads is considered spamming. It's the owner of the threads job to let the readers know of this and ensure it does not happen excessively. So readers, myself included, must refrain from doing this now that we know!

Happy reading😃
